Shaq to Cleveland, Big Ben and Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix. I assume Ben will get bought out and retire.

You know, Steve Kerr might not be good at his job
The trade is a pretty strong admission by the Suns that they screwed up when they traded Shawn Marion for Shaq in February of 2007. Marion was a free agent this summer and, had they let him walk, their savings would’ve been $21 million not the $5.5 million they’re saving in this deal.

Hindsight blah blah blah…..but damn they messed up big time.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

oh god

Now the League can finally get their Lakers/ cavs nba finals and squeeze every little bit out of the Kobe / Shaq thing. Can’t wait for the Christmas match up either.

so...

does this mean no more amare?

by Faizamaze on Jun 25, 2009 12:16 AM CDT reply actions

According to KC the Bulls were in on the Shaq talks.

Brad Miller and Tim Thomas were discussed. Im too lazy to link it.

by SoulEater7 on Jun 25, 2009 12:22 AM CDT reply actions

O’Neal makes $21 million next season and there were reports late Wednesday he’s getting traded to Cleveland. O’Neal wouldn’t seem to make much sense for a Bulls team intent on improving defensively and playing up-tempo with Derrick Rose. But the Republic reported discussions surrounding swapping expiring contracts — likely those of Brad Miller and Tim Thomas — were discussed.

Does this really matter?

You’re talking about Shaq. He’s going to be 38 years old. Remember Kareem playing in the Showtime Laker lineups?

The only other useless information I'll add to this is...

Shaq is going to look pretty fat in wine and gold. They totally ripped that off from the 80’s Bulls with Chicago in cursive. My life sucks.

Oh is this a move so they can sign

2010 free agents? I guess so. Rent a Shaq. When was the last time he played in a cold city? Hmmm never?

by Juan dela Cruz on Jun 25, 2009 12:50 AM CDT reply actions

The Cavs can have Shaq.

This move doesn’t necessarily mean instant chammpionship for Cleveland. Cleveland grabbed the wrong big man. If they had grabbed Bosh they would have a young dynasty on their hands. With Shaq its “now or never.” Wherever Shaq goes he has to be the center of attention and he HAS to have his touches. He also can’t defend the pick-and-roll and is still a liability at the free throw line. Oh and btw he’s 37 years old! Hes not the Shaq from 2001 or even 2006. And don’t forget about the beasts of the east Celtics and Magic standing in their way. If the Cavs don’t get it done next season (and ultimately i don’t think they will), and if we have grabbed Bosh by then; Lebron would have to consider the Bulls as thee best option for championship glory!!

Well, they grabbed who was availble.

I can guarantee you that unless the Cavs’ GM has turned into either Chris Wallace of a zombie that he wouldn’t trade Bosh for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic.

It does give Cleveland more money to keep James and grab another 2010 free agent

Making our chances even less when it comes to getting Bosh or Amare. I would say if Wade and James stay with there teams which will have cap room they can easily attract Bosh or Amare to come play with them.

So he signed a 4 year deal with the Bulls

And will likely be out of the league after year 3. I think we all knew the last year or two of that contract would be rough, but no one could have imagined that.

according to espn and broussard

theres still a very highly likely chance that amare will be dealt in the coming days
esp since he can bolt within a year

The worst part of this is,

now we have to resign Ben Wallace to guard Shaq.

I think this makes it less of a chance that they move Amare

Now that they do not have to pay the luxury tax. They still have Nash, Richardson, and Amare to keep ticket sales coming in.

by J Theory on Jun 25, 2009 8:09 AM CDT reply actions

I tend to think that too, but I've been wrong before

The other thing I imagine is that if Amare doesn’t command that high a price (say, Kirk, either to Phoenix or to Portland for NG contracts and Tyrus), just for example, then you have to say yes.

And maybe it’s just because I’m so on Bosh’s jock, but if we get Amare for relatively cheap, why not still go after Bosh? Say Noah, Salmons, Pick for Bosh, and Kirk, Tyrus (+#26?) for Amare

We come out of it with
1- Rose
2- Gordon
3- Deng
4- Bosh
5- Amare, Miller

Find two free agents and you’ve got yourself something pretty interesting.

by Sports2 on Jun 25, 2009 8:18 AM CDT up reply actions

that lineup would be ridiculous. The other problem with it is that Rose sucks on D, so does Gordon, and so does STAT.

It sure would be fun to watch on offense, though.

I'm telling you; The Cavs will not win the title.

The Cavs will have a dominating regular season. Shaq will give good quotes for the media (as always). At some point in the season Shaq and Lebron will have a little rift only to make up a few games later. And in the end the Cavs will die a slow and horrible death in the eastern conference finals. Lebron, once again shutout from a title, will become so frustrated that he leaves the Cavs no what their plans are for 2010. The Bulls, with Bosh included, will be waiting for him.

I don't think Stoudemire SUCKS on defense, does he?

And I still have hope that Rose won’t suck.

Amare sucking is a bit of an overstatement. He's just not interested, which is annoying. . .

especially given the tools he has to be an elite defender (length, quick leaper, great agility, etc.)

1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your Kirk in that box
3. Make some team open that box

by fundamentallysound on Jun 25, 2009 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

No,really he SUCKS on defense.

by The Red Menace on Jun 25, 2009 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Eh, I'm with fundamentallysound on this...

Amare’s not a great defender but he doesn’t suck. He’s kind of like a Tyrus Thomas on D (although Tyrus gives much better effort). Amare has potential to be one of the best help defenders in the league, he just doesn’t care to. But he should average about 2-3 bpg if he really cared.

On the Shaq to Cleveland note, I think this is pretty desperate by the Cavs. Think about it. What killed Cleveland in the East Finals? Two things:

A.) Had no athletic wing to guard Lewis/Turkoglu on the wing.

B.) Had no answer for the Turkoglu/Howard pick and roll.

Does Shaq solve either of these problems? Exactly what problems DOES he solve for the Cavs? Last time I checked Shaq isn’t guarding ANYONE on the wing and he’s most likely the worst pick and roll defender in the last 10 years (maybe besides Steve Nash, funny they missed the playoffs together last year huh?).

Unless this is a one-year tryout with the plan of signing Bosh, Amare or Joe Johnson next year I think this was a bad basketball decision by both teams, but mainly the Cavs.

by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 25, 2009 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Desperate, I agree

They give Lebron what he wants, and that may make strides this offseason at pacifying him after the loss to the Magic. I think the desperation comes in from management trying to keep Lebron in Cleveland.
I bet the CAVS aren’t done yet for trades — they so far made Lebron happy. But they will need to fill gaps still with other players. Ferry is pretty smart (I think) and probably sees the issues you listed above — and the Magic are the main team they need to overcome…

Yeah, but if Rose still sucks in 2-3 years, then we suck (not really, but you know what I mean)

He will probably become at least average, and if he’s never going to fight through screens, at least play some kind of Iverson-level D and use the quickness to play the passing lanes.

This will be fun

The difference between those three is the Godfather trilogy. One is Fredo, who was never ready for me to hand it over to him. One is Sonny, who will do whatever it takes to be the man, and one is Michael, who if you watch the trilogy, the Godfather hands it over to Michael. So I have no problem handing it over to Dwyane.
          - On his relationship with Penny, Kobe, and Dwyane respectively

So i wonder what he will think about playing with the king. Will he call him sell the Duke Shaq? I wonder what kobe feels, i mean he just got out of shaqs shadow and now the media is gonna hype this up even more. I mean if Kobe vs Lebron was hyped to no end during the post season, can anyone imagine how hyped up Kobe vs Shaq and Lebron is gonna be…Kobe has gotta be bashing his head on the wall, not because of the fact that the cavs are so much better, but because he knows the media is gonna give him hell for this…
