All it is

is dunking. Ha!

I think someone needs to tell him to try being on the other side of the guy dunking if he wants to “improve”

Gotta love those young legs

Six straight alley-oops without breaking a sweat? From a 6’3 point guard?

If he comes back in the fall with some better footwork on defense and some extra effort, I’ll be impressed.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

Did it look to anyone else like he was releasing his shot on the way down?

his shot aint pretty. thats for sure.

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

no, because it's not consistent

let’s think, people!

Ok let me rephrase

As long as it “consistently” went in

;)

by Option27 on Jun 24, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

It's practice.

We’re talking about unguarded, uncontested (on shooting) practice. Far less likely to work when there’s someone defending him.

Yeah

He does that during games too which made me think he was doing it in reaction to the defense the times I noticed it, but he seems to be doing it during unguarded shots like in this video. It really is only a fraction of a second after the peak of his shot, but you have to think that means he isn’t getting 100% of the strength of his shot if his jump and release are not perfect sync. That is extra energy wasted with each shot.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Its a split second I wouldn’t pay attention to it. Because hes had his jumper going for the season and taking it at the height. Hes just not hanging here he looks like hes been practicing for a while there.
But sometimes it just seems like that to me his jumper still has the right flow.

by Camry on Jun 24, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

No, that's what he SHOULD pay attention to

If you really watch Derrick’s shooting motion there are two things wrong with it. They’re small things, and definitely fixable as his form is good for the most part. But think about it — Derrick’s somewhat consistent with the mid-range jumper, it’s the three that is his main weakness.

Here’s what’s wrong with his shot:

His shooting arm should form a right angle when he is set to release the shot – his is more like a 75 degree angle (he’s dropping his hand to close to his shoulder). This decreases accuracy and doesn’t allow him to utilize the full amount of momentum from his jump (which is where the majority of the strength of the shot should come from).

Like Tyger said, he’s releasing the ball a split second after he reaches the peak of his jump — further decreasing the distance of the shot. When the strength to push the ball comes less from the legs/jump he has to compensate by using his arm more. This is what hurts his accuracy on threes — the shooting hand should only provide about 20% of the strength (it’s mainly there to guide the ball).

If Derrick can work out these two little kinks in his shot this summer we’re going to see drastically improved shooting from him next year. If that happens, watch out NBA.

Certainly could not have said that better.

He almost brings the ball down to his right ear. I don’t like that at all. As with w/ Bruce Bowen who can shoot 3’s but not FT’s, there are exceptions to the “ugly shot” but still really good rule, like Reggie Miller. But Derrick is not great at shooting. If he already were, I’d say let him stay the same.

I can understand the slight delay in releasing the ball not being caught in practice, but I don’t like that, after two months of practicing (or however long it’s been), he’s bringing the ball to the side of his head.

I don't think everything has to be text book

We’ll see next season that his shot is going to be better. Because its been steadily improving. I think its nitpicking. If Rose wasn’t training well his shot from mid range would of stunk this year.

In the season it was at the apex and now hes really not hanging in the air there hes tired after practicing for so long. Most people have a different release all at the height though.
Since his shot isn’t his best means to score already I wouldn’t be worried because everyone has their quirks. I just wonder where at do we expect this to come into play if hes already shooting mid range well. Also its kind of like how some guys play point one year or how tall big men never learn post moves because they are so much taller than everyone at first.
Not easy for him to get a jumper but hes made some great strides if his form needs improvement I’m confident it’ll come.
He barely drops his hand like that definitively from fatigue.

Most players lose their shot with their legs though. If you’re tired its just about fighting through it and conditioning. We won’t even be talking about it once the season gets going though I’m pretty confident it’ll be fine.

any idea who he's working out with?

one of them looks like Russel Westbrook who he worked out with last summer
