Bulls have deal in place?
I'm linking Poopsworld again, I know, but this caught my attention due to the certainty in his tone. Here's the excerpt:
Argie Grigorakos in Toronto, Ontario, Canada:
Hey Bill, Have you heard any rumours about the Bulls in regards to BG, the Draft, or Free Agency. Thanks.
Bill Ingram:
They're set on bringing back BG, but expect to see a major move involving one of their front court guys. I can't say more than that, but there will be a deal . . .think about what they almost did at the trade deadline.
Does he mean back court? That would make sense in regards to the almost Hinrich to Minny trade. But front court? What deal almost went down at the trade deadline? Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe he's referring to
Deng + Tyrus for Stoudamire. Other than Hinrich to Minny or a Bosh deal that’s all I can think of. I also don’t remember hearing many substantive Bosh to Chicago rumors at the trade deadline — but I do remember hearing that Stoudamire to Chicago was seriously discussed.
This sounds promising. Personally, even with the lack of defense/rebounding and injury problems I still like Amar’e better than Bosh. As a matter of fact, his rebounding numbers aren’t really any worse than Bosh’s.

Deadline deal with frontcourt
players could mean Amare.
That’s the first thing that comes to mind.
Minny doesn’t want Kirk. Raef contract has expired. No other deal involving the front court was discussed as much.
Unfortunately, the source on this is Poopsworld, so, meh….

Not quite. But getting a pick back in such a deal would be nice if it lands you Amare and Phoenix 3 pieces (and expiring junk)

PHX has to get some picks in this
otherwise they do get hosed…
But they’d probably take cash in place of picks they’d otherwise sell.

PHX
Sergio to back up Ja Rich + Nash.
Tyrus to replace Amare & be active next to shaq
Outlaw 3 or 4 to replace Barnes or backup Tyrus & Hill
All 3 players are young with potential and on cheap deals. Plus, Jerome James salary savings. I don’t think Phoenix would want draft picks because they always sell there picks. Finally, Kerr pulls a McHale.

I just think if they're
giving up on Amare, it’s rebuilding time for them. Get picks. Also try to move Shaq. Use picks to fill out the bench or attain assets for other deals.

you have to sell it the fans at least. Showing an investment in the future is necessary. The fans aren’t gonna go for save money at the expense of a competitive team. (At least I wouldn’t)

I would think Jerome James is appealing as "cash" to PHX
And maybe dangle the #26 pick if necessary.
If this deal went through I would think the Bulls would be making a steal!
If BG money is one of the rumored golas for this trade, and if it is anywhere near true, then I would guess it would happen this week before the draft.

I would say
that KP is dealing from a position of strength. He doesn’t have to do a thing and the Blazers will probably win 55 games next year. It’s pretty easy for him to say no thanks to a marginal trade and wait for a favorable one.
So yes, some players are being overvalued if you analyze them in a vacuum, but KP playing hardball is a smart GM move.

Yeah, that's what WE said
about Paxson a few years back. We thought that after the Bulls were one win away from a two seed in the East and we didn’t pull the trigger on KG, Gasol or Kobe.
The one thing the Blazers have that the 2006 Bulls didn’t was a bonafide all star (Roy). You can’t be content to stand pat while all of the other teams in your conference are busy getting better. One of the biggest mistakes at the trade deadline was not making a move with Lafrentz’s expiring deal to get a big time player with playoff experience.
Then maybe you don’t lose to the Rockets in the first round.. with homecourt advantage…

The other teams are hardly getting better
Portland is in the top 4 in the West, but the gap between #1 and 2-4 is fairly large IMO. I’d say they are on par with Denver, Houston and a healthy San Antonio. Dallas, Phoenix, New Orleans, Utah all have some serious issues.

Morey acknowledged that Portland was Houston’s best matchup, statistically. it’s one of those odd things, like Orlando always beating Cleveland. Matchups suck.
Also, the LaFrentz chip was not a bad move by Pritchard, because we have cap space. Any deal we make, Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw can be cut. Bada bing. There’s your fifteen million in RLEC cap space, except the owner who deals with the Blazers doesn’t have to pay Raef any money.
It’s a mistake if he doesn’t use the cap space.

yes, I agree.
I think it’s important to go beyond talent in vs talent out in this Blazer off season. Shipping out both Outlaw and Blake in this 3 way trade for Hinrich saves some of our cap space which gives us room to make another deal. It also slims down the fuzzy rotation at the 3 spot assuming Martell Webster comes back healthy. The move to make after this one is to pick up a back up PF to replace Outlaw/Frye. Brandon Bass maybe?

WHY Amare over Bosh? Bosh seems to me to be the better overall player (especially defensively).

He is the better player, but either of them is better than Tyrus and Amare might be the better fit because of his ability
to roll to the hoop and finish PHX style, which is ideally what we’d like for our offense to look like.

by fundamentallysound on Jun 22, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What have we seen
from Bosh to suggest he’s any good on defense? I’m not saying Amare IS, but I don’t think we should base our comparison of those two players on defense.
I definitely think Amare’s a better fit for us than Bosh, but some people around here seem to think Bosh is worth Deng, Tyrus and Noah (and most likely draft picks also). I’m not so sure.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 22, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
He is a better defender. Hedges out on pick and rolls a lot better, and is generally more interested in playing defense
than Amare.
Amare has the tools to be an elite defender, but he’s just not interested in doing it. Bosh gets pushed around by the Dwight Howards and Yaos of the world down low, but those guys are the exception. Bosh is a very good defender.
"Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy." --Newton
by fundamentallysound on Jun 22, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well put.
I will give you that Bosh is the better defender — but is he THAT much better that it’s going to make a difference? If Noah adds about 10 lbs of muscle this summer his defense should more than make up for the deficiency.
I realize there’s much more baggage with Stat than Bosh, I just think the cost is lower, Stat fits better and has more long-term upside (did I just use upside in referring to a 5 year veteran? Yep.)
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 22, 2009 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not that Amare is a bad defender. It’s that he doesn’t even care about defense, which is whole ’nother level of bad.
Bosh is a far better all-around player, as well as younger.

Amare on a bulls defensive frontcourt
i would imagine that amare would guard either the 4 or 5 depending who is less talented on offense. From the top of my mind, I can’t think of any team in the league save the magic and lakers that have serious offensive threats at both the 4 and the 5. Noah/Miller can guard the more talented offensive centers and deng can even play some defense at the 4 on perimeter oriented guys like nowitzki and rashard lewis types.
In the future it would be good to have a defensive minded center/power forward who is big and burly and blocks shots (lik the polish hammer) when after brad miller leaves.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 22, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope, it wasn't a commentary on Amare at all
More that I don’t think Rose’s game resembles Nash’s game much at all, and that I don’t see that Phoenix’s offense is a really great template for Rose or the rest of the Bulls’ likely key personnel.
by Sports2 on Jun 22, 2009 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only similarity
Is the speed and run and gun styles…..though I agree on the rest. Nash is a far superior passer and I actually think Derrick’s a good passer, but there are few as crafty as Steve Nash, and Nash is also a far better shooter….
Derrick of course is more explosive, etc…
I do think though the fact that Derrick seems best suited in a run and gun style offense, that Amar’e would be perfect, since that’s one of his best strengths.

his 2nd year, also had
10 blocks in a february game vs utah. just prior to his first injury (achilles?). nash was stolen from dallas the next year, amare’s first all-star season.
bosh’s career high is 6 in a game, tyrus had his this year with that 8 block game. just one game a long time ago for amare, true. but how about in november this year: 44 min 17-21 fga (0-2 were 3-pt!) 15-15 fta 1 orb 10 drb 6 ast 5 stl 2 blk 49 pts. and best overall game i’ve ever seen from him, about as good as i’ve seen from anybody, ftm. terry porter was coaching the team then, and nash couldn’t or wouldn’t play for him. amare dominated that night from the high post (but it was only against indiana). amare has nash, but bosh has calderon, don’t forget.
i think bosh is a better defender and rebounder, but it’s not tremendous difference. i really don’t think people understand amare’s potential to go to a competitive team and show more than he ever has before as their leader. i may be too close to the situation, but it seems to me that bosh is a more obvious 2 guy.

it could just be reputation
Ive heard some ugly things about amare when talking about anything but his offensive game. He actually may be the Ben Gordon of powerforwards…i mean undersized, questionable defense, questionable leadership ability, incredible offensive game, can do alot of damage in very little time, every stat pretty much shows that his offense more than makes up for his defense (and his defense isnt half bad either///at least statistically). This also explains matts choice of amare over bosh being practically hands down amare.

Since everyone seems to be an inch or two
shorter than they really are it is all relative, isn’t it? Every time height is brought up someone thinks someone is shorter than they are. Besides, some players play big and some play small no matter their height.

well thats what i was saying
thats why i didnt post the without shoes measurement. However, i think amare is actually closer to 6’9 as opposed to 6’10 and that isnt relative, just like ben gordon being listed at 6’2 isnt completely accurate at all (closer to 6’1) thus more similarities between them.

I am in total agreement. Its funny how quickly people forget that nash and amare, both bad defenders, led the suns to 3 straight conference finals not so long ago. And Marion is not the defensive stopper he has used to be made out to b e. Just a good defender on a bad defensive team that had to take the harder assignments, but he was definitely no ron artest or tim duncan.

The Suns had a specific defensive gameplan and executed it well.
(a) Don’t foul. (b) Don’t give up layups. © Don’t give up offensive rebounds. Basically, anything to maximize transition opportunities. They weren’t looking to lock down; they were looking to outscore. And it worked for the most part.

Not neccesarily..
The Bulls with Amare and Noah could be the team that PHX should’ve been with Shaq: a run-n-gun team with solid defense.(Like the Showtime Lakers.) Looking at it this way; I think Amare would definitely be a better fit than Bosh for the Bulls. This team is young enough and fast enough to run-n-gun so LETS RUN!!!!

All this Amar’e can’t win is nonsense…..I think David Stern had a bit to do by suspending Amar’e….
Stoudemire’s the better athlete and offensive player…Bosh is the safer choice (health, better D, doesn’t have the “me” rep) both would be big improvements over what we have….A healthy and tuned in Stoudemire though I feel is better than Bosh….though I’d love both and the eyes and knees on Stat are a concern.

But in comparing the two, I think I just don’t have the amnesia….I mean coming into last year (Stat hurt and poorly coached year) 95% of the folks would clearly say Stoudemire over Bosh, though Bosh remained good….
Now Bosh played the full year while Stoudemire was hurt, and Bosh is the clearly better player????
I don’t know. Bosh is the much safer of the two and is a superstar in his own right, but Amare’s talent is clearly that of a #1 player franchise guy. Bosh might be like Gasol before him a GREAT #2….
If Stat had no injury risks, it would be Stoudemire in a landslide. The 1 yr age difference means absolutely nothing when you’re what 26 yrs old….
THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

i've done this before
but here i goes again: bosh 3/24/84 stoudemire 11/16/82.
that’s 1 year and 128 days, or 1.35 year.

ok, 1.35
it’s just another mark in the Bosh column, not saying it’s the ultimate factor.

The sum of "marks in the column" really seem to favor Bosh
In Bosh’s favor:
- No injury issues vs. major injury issue
- Slightly younger
- Seemingly better regarded defender
- Well regarded and seemingly solid off the court vs. somewhat questionable rep off the court
- No stretches of really awful play for Bosh, vs. a really ugly stretch for Amare last year
- Bosh has talked about wanted to play with other good players. Amare has chafed at playing with other good players.

He's also way better at self-promotion
Looks like a dinosaur (intimidation factor!), and has a nice Texas drawl so he and Rose can communicate exclusively via nonsensical ramblings.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

that's one of my favorite running hoops blog memes (as obscure as that could be)
was the YAYSports pictures of Bosh as a dinosaur, and then J.E. Skeets always saying how he did not get the resemblance at all…

• amare has major injury
issues, in the plural. microfracture knee, now the eyes, and a season-ender (leg or foot) way back in his second year.
yet it’s interesting to look at the other years. games missed:
amare: 0 – 27 – 2 – 79 – 0 – 3 – 29
……..bosh: 7 – 1 – 12 – 13 – 15 – 5
for a guy with no injury issues and stellar teammate character, bosh only came close to a complete season played once. amare’s record shows he has every year in which he hasn’t had something serious (admittedly, just 4 of 7 years!). your point is taken, but there’s more to it, as usual.
• off the court, amare spends much time in the summer in phoenix (it’s nearly torture!), even attending university classes. don’t know if bosh (were he a baseball player) would spend the winter in toronto.
• terry porter was a really ugly coach for the suns last year.
• amare was instrumental in lobbying for nash, and then was ecstatic at the arrival of shaq.

At the exit interviews Pax told everyone that defense would be stressed this coming year
Except that, regretably, he didn’t say how that would be accomplished with the current coaching staff. And with Amare it would be even more difficult. I guess.

maybe that's why BG didn't get an exit interview?

I don't think Mr. Poopsworld was referring to Amare
In the same chat he said:
Bill Ingram:
You can’t get Amar’e or Bosh now, so you’d wait a year. Amar’e might be ready to play before summer’s end, but he can’t pass a physical now.
Of course, they have been known to contradict themselves before (you know, to cover themselves) but I’d say his “inside info” is about someone other than Amare. Hello Chris Kaman?
by L. Toro on Jun 22, 2009 6:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
wasn't Kaman injured at the deadline?
I’m pretty sure he’s talking Amare. Man, that was a crazy week :)

as crazy as the offseason where we almost got kobe
or the season we almost got gasol
i fear this week might be just as crazy…and i fear the same result as all those other crazy weeks….

I'm starting to get legitimately excited.
I actually think the Bulls could pull this off, as much as I slag their indecisiveness. Mostly (mostly) that’s hyperbole. Though whenever I feel bad about it I remember the coaching search (and result).

uh...the coaching thing
I remember the bulls changed the personell, took away a coach who seemed to have lost his desire to help the team, put in vinny del negro, he talked a good talk….we had anticipations….and it turned out that the new guy really was worse than skiles was
fast forward now
again we have a head personel who seems to have lost his desire to help the team, again we are putting in some no name to replace him, again the new guy seems to talk a good talk….ehhh
To be honest i hope we trade the picks, i see no hope in anything we could possibly draft anything worthwhile GOING into the next season.
I mean throw blake griffen in the 2003 draft and i’d say he is a late lottery to mid first rounder….
Nothing but a blockbuster trade in the upcoming week will satisfy me with this organization.

I actually emailed this Ingram quote to Sam Smith...
and he said he thinks this guy’s just blowing smoke out of his…butt. I’m a pretty big Sam Smith fan, and I usually believe that what he says is the truth to the best of his knowledge.
That being said, this guy sounded damn sure and I really hope Sam’s wrong. I would LOVE to see Stat in a Bulls uniform next year. In goggles. Rose throwing alley-oops to the newest Bull to sport the gogs? AWESOME.

The relevant graph:
“But I found Kaman here and he thought he could be with the Bulls—or some other team—within a few days, even if he says he probably won’t play for a few weeks as he recovers from a torn plantar fascia.”

Isn't this
the same guy who said Tyrus was “looking for houses in Phoenix” near the trade deadline this year?
"Vinny continues to act like a crazed arsonist pouring gasoline on our season while running around carrying a torch yelling 'I’m in charge. Don’t any of you foolish knaves try to second guess me. I know gasoline is a liquid but I’m pretty sure it isn’t flammable and the odor gives me a natural high.'" - Tyrusmancrush

I read through this fast
So maybe I missed a mention of this, but someone pointed out to me — could this be about the proposed Deng for Shaq deal that had been floated out there?
If so, a lot less exciting than possibly getting Amare.
by dogra on Jun 23, 2009 10:52 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
WOW.
I totally didn’t even think about that. Damn. That would really put a damper on my excitement. I love me some Shaq, but it’s kind of like watching that movie The Hangover — I have no desire to be THAT close to the hilarity.
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jun 23, 2009 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that wasn't discussed at the deadline, though.
I wonder if they did discuss Shaq earlier in this offseason, and then it shifted back towards Amare ?

Sure, Deng hasn’t come anywhere near justifying the contract awarded other than having a notable profession outside of basketball.
I think they can do better

on their website around the deadline that mentioned Shaq for Deng. At least I think so. I don’t know when else I would have seen that… was it earlier in the season?
