Official SBNation Mock Draft: Bulls (me) take Tyler Hansbrough

Read about it here at the official HQ for draft talk at SBNation, Ridiculous Upside.

The reasoning is a condensed version of this post

Guys I would've taken over Hansbrough were off this particular board, namely DeJuan Blair and Gerald Henderson. Mullens was still out there, but I went for the surer thing (at mediocrity).

So check out RU all through the draft week, as well as our SBNation hub, which culls the posts from around the network focusing on Thursday's draft. No doubt you'll find other blogs who know a heck of a lot more about these guys than I do.

I'm interested (for once) as to what you guys think. I know, crazy....but here's a poll!

This draft sucks

Hopefully they can an immediate impact player like Blair, if not then go after White Whale #2 and draft a big guard with upside like Henderson or Williams.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

I think i would take Hansborough

but im debating over hansborough james johnson or gerald henderson
cuz were most likely gonna lose Ben Gordon (right?)
and even though i like salmons at SG i would love to have some instant offense off the bench… (SG)
but hansborough seems like he could be a pretty good backup PF

the guy from Memphis is doing some wishful thinking

Memphis is taking Thabeet or Harden. If we move up to #11, like rumored, Blair would be my pick.

I'd rather have a PF/C scoring type, and I think Hansbrough can do that.

But James Johnson is a SF/PF scorer, and I think he’ll be good, too. Getting Johnson and hoping he could guard 3’s adequately would allow the Bulls to draft a PG/SG combo guy with the later pick, meaning, Toney Douglas. If they all panned out (including Asik), and Deng and Thomas stuck, the Bulls would be one SG away from a complete team.

Rose/Douglas
???/Douglas
Deng/Ja.Johnson
Thomas/Ja.Jonson
Noah/Asik

Joe Johnson or Dwyane Wade would be a nice substitution for those question-marks.

**I think he'll be good at scoring from either SF or PF, is what I meant.

I don’t know how good he’ll be as a defensive player. And that lineup is for next off-season, assuming Miller and Salmons are gone.

And honestly, if they let Gordon go and keep Hinrich, putting him at SG for a year and substituting Miller for Asik… I don’t dislike that team. (I’m forgetting Salmons on purpose, but he’ll be the starter this year…) Actually, I’m… I could get behind Johnson and Douglas, letting Gordon go and shooting for the moon in 2010. They’ll be good this year and have a chance at being really good… ugh. I’m leaving.

James Johnson

Of what was left on the board, I take him. He can play either forward spot and is more skilled offensively than Hansbrough. Plus all the other mock drafts have him gone by the time the 16th pick comes up so we’d be getting a lottery talent just outside of the lottery.

by bigballa10 on Jun 20, 2009 4:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The more I think about it...

The potential move up has to be targeting Johnson or Henderson. I know a lot of people want Blair, but I think we pass. Think about this, Johnson is taller, more athletic, and a better scorer than Blair. We will miss out on the toughness and boards, but I don’t know enough about Johnson to say he’s not tough and I think the added offense makes up for the loss boards. If we pick him, I hope he ends up being a better Big Baby or a more consistent Marcus Fizer, which I can really see happening. It’s not like he’ll be starting so he should be able to work out against back up PF’s and SF’s.

Daye

I base that on Holinger’s draft rater system and the belief that the Bulls need to start a player development system (PROCESS!!!). In order to do that they need to hire a coach(s) responsible for that and also develop a culture that supports that. Of course that would fall on Pax to make happen

'07 you chose Hawes over Noah

sorry to bring it up man, but he still might pass Joakim up…. Nah!

And this year it’s Hansbrough over TWilliams. Really, why does your poll have a “Someone else” vote and lack an “Anyone else”? Harsh, perhaps, and I’m trying to be funny, ‘cause I don’t really follow the college game. Just think this guy’ll be a more annoying Songaila, at best.

Even though i hate BullsBloggers' guts i agree with his pick.

This draft is more so about role players than stars. Hansbrough will be for the Bulls what Leon Powe is for the Celtics: extra muscle coming off the bench. As we all know; part of what makes a champion-caliber team is a good bench.

By the way: I’m not against drafting James Johnson. He reminds me a little of Beasley minus the goofiness.

If DeJuan Blair is available, take him, cause i think he is the 2nd coming of the Chukster

if not, then what the heck, go with Byron James Mullens. The dude has a lot of upside. Shoots the ball on the perimeter, runs the floor, athletic, legit 7 footer. Plus he is fucking young and humble.

With Gordon seemingly on his way out

Doesn’t it make sense to draft the high-floor SG (Williams) over the high-floor PF (Hansbrough), especially when Williams has higher upside as well?

Most important player on the #1 overall seed team

Main distributor, #2 scorer, #2 rebounder for Louisville. 8.6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2.3 steals, 0.8 blocks per game is filling up the stat sheet. The scouts say he’s a good defender. Made 38.5% of his threes. At 6’6", a guy who can play defense and pass this well has a spot in an NBA rotation.

And he put up those numbers in the Big East. He had a good supporting cast, but Louisville had to have a couple studs to be the #1 overall seed, and he’s one of them. I think he’s one of the most NBA ready players in this draft – because he doesn’t have to score to contribute, I think his game translates so well to Quality NBA Role Player, and he’s got the body/athleticism to be a bit more.

by YaoPau on Jun 21, 2009 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

People seem all over the map on him

The biggest knocks are that he can’t shoot and can’t dribble. And his advanced stats tend to show this. But on the other hand, he’s undeniably improved his outside shot, and I’m sort of re-thinking how he’d fit with Rose.

If we look at TWill as a guy who might develop in to a good catch and shoot player, then the comparison with the guy we most commonly compare him with, Thabo, sort of goes out the window. He’s similar in other respects, but let’s face it, if Thabo could just hit that jumper, he’d be a much more impressive player.

So at the end of the day, I don’t think I’ll be ticked if we take him. At 16, the none of the guys on the board look obviously great. I think my mental draft board go something like
Lawson
Hansbrough
Mullins
TWill / James Johnson
Blair

by Sports2 on Jun 22, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's where I am, too. I have the guys I like and what I'd like to see the Bulls do.

However, there are a number of guys they could take that I wouldn’t be bothered by.

I do not like Mullens, though.

Didn't think this was worthy of a fan shot

but according to Chad Ford, the Bulls are targeting Blair, Hansborough, Johnson and TWill. Basically the people on this draft board, minus Mullens (yes!). I would prefer Johnson or Blair. I think both guys have low ceilings but much higher upsides than Hansborough.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2009/insider/news/story?page=09DraftBuzz2&action=upsell&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba%2fdraft2009%2finsider%2fnews%2fstory%3fpage%3d09DraftBuzz2

The Bulls appear to be targeting a big as well, looking at Blair, Hansbrough and Johnson. They also are fans of Williams.
Behind the scenes, there has been a lot of talk and maneuvering, as these teams try to figure out who will be available. The Pacers, Suns and Bulls have all talked with teams about moving up and down in the draft. The Bulls seem to be trying to leapfrog the others by acquiring the Nets’ No. 11 pick, and are dangling No. 16 and No. 26. The Suns have tried to get up higher in the lottery, as have the Pacers.
Of course, all of these trade discussions depend on who’s going to be available, something that’s a real mystery right now. And in some cases, at this time of the year, teams are engaging in draft talk with prospects just to try to get more information about what other teams are going to do in the draft.
While sources say it’s likely that the Bulls move up in the draft, the Nets aren’t their only suitors.

Tyler Hansbrough or T-Williams would be great additions

But we should draft the guy who could be more interesting to Toronto, so we could include him in a deal to get Bosh. And since they need wing players, maybe T-Williams is the best choice

For the record, I think that is what they should do, but I don’t know if that is what they will do… if we draft Ja. Johnson or Williams, Gordon is gone IMHO.

I think James Johnson will be a bust

I don’t get why everyone’s so high on him. I’m predicting that Gordon leaves and Hinrich gets traded as well, but we don’t make a Bosh trade. This is what I think we should do.

PG: Rose/Blake
SG: Salmons/Danny Green at 26
SF: Deng/Outlaw
PF: Thomas/Dejuan Blair at 16
C: Noah/Miller

I hate the fact that Salmons would be starting at SG, but this is VDN we’re talking about here. If Blair is off the board (which is realistically a 75-25 chance), then take Hansborough.

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

by stupidgenius on Jun 22, 2009 4:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take DeJuan Blair

He’s a rebounding machne who can score down low. I don’t care if he’s 6’ 6". He abused Thabeet who has an 8 foot wingspan. Blair also has a nasty streak and will outwork guys. Mullens couldn’t even crack the starting lineup of a medicore Big Ten team mostly because of a bad attitude and horrible work ethic.

Gibson, Brockman, Pendergraph. All were good rebounders in college and all would fit nicely behind Tyrus.
