Mario Austin to play for the Bulls' summer league team
Apparently Mario Austin is back on the Bulls radar. He was drafted in 03' and has been decent in Europe. The Bulls still own his rights so he's a minor asset that could be included in trades or used to fill in the bench after a big trade. Maybe he just wants out of Europe or maybe the Bulls are actually interested in getting some value out of their long lost 2nd round pick.

even 'no value' is technically value
since you can not acquire anything in the NBA for literally nothing (and I believe also it can’t be just cash). It has to be the rights to something, rights to a future pick, trade exception, etc.

Really?
Well I say it’s worth a shot, bring him in and maybe he makes the regular season roster. All I could find were these few links from you tube. After taking a look at the Austin mix he looks like he could be the scoring punch we need off the bench, He had some very good post moves and a nice touch from the euro three point line.

I'm impressed by the mixtape
Not bad for a 6’8" guy with some bulk, he shows some craftiness in the post, a nice touch around the rim, and a fluid 3pt stroke. That said, he was on our 2007 summer league team and we didn’t sign him, so maybe that’s just a well-spliced video.

meh, if Thomas and/or Noah were to play in that league for the next 3-4 years, they'd be 10 x better

I don't doubt that they would dominate
But I doubt either has the polished back to the basket moves that we’re shown in the clip, if he’s that type of player then we could use him coming off the bench.

the mix is pretty gay.

Adults say "gay" these days? I thought that ended in grade school.
I know we are on a sports blog, but we can do better than that, right?
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

I didn't mean gay like as in gay.
But anyways I meant the music was rather, whats the word hmmmmmm silly? Thanks crane and I apologize to any Homosexuals or gay people and the gay community.
So the mix was pretty nonsensical.

probably better to just not reply to that one since you just did this:
gay = silly
gay = nonsensical
Just saying:)

They have them basically forever until he signs an NBA contract under the current system.
Sabonis was drafted in 1986, and Portland still had his rights when he finally showed up in 1995.

Then what was the deal w/ Scola?
Obviously he wanted to come over to the NBA, but if the Spurs didn’t want him or couldn’t afford him, why trade him to Houston? I remember reading something about them “needing” to make a move, but I don’t remember why.

luxury tax
they used Scola’s rights in a package to deal away some dead guaranteed money (PER superstar Jackie Butler) for a non-guaranteed contract (Vassilis Spanoulis, who was desperate to return to Europe) they could waive immediately.
Granted, they could’ve freed up that money any time during that season to stay under the tax. I don’t think anyone could say it was a ‘good’ move considering how solid Scola has been. It’s also possible they didn’t think Scola would come over for the MLE like he did for the Rockets.
