Ty Lawson is going to be the absolute steal of this draft. I fully anticipate that he will go to some team like the Pistons
who could really use him and completely light up the league as a rookie. He’ll be better than D.J. Augustin. Think T.J. Ford without the health issues and with a really great 3 point shot. Ty Lawson will be an All-Star. I personally think if Stephon Curry isn’t there, that the Knicks would be foolish not to select Lawson as their PG of the future.

I agee,
but I still don’t think the Bulls should take him with their first pick.

it seems like a lot of people on this site
dont think chicago can contend for 2-3 years, so why would you not pick a guy at 16 who you think will be an all-star, someone who lights up the league as a rookie. even if he plays the same position as rose, so what? take him and trade him later for proven players that fit your need rather than drafting unknowns who may or may not do the same.

Being a big Lawson supporter, I've thought a lot about this
and my conclusion is that there’s less reason to think Rose could play as well off the ball than I initially thought.
When I started out thinking about it, I really thought he was not a lot to lose, but after looking more in depth at Rose, I think he’d lose a fair amount of the physical advantages he enjoys if he’s routinely matched up against SGs.
I still can’t say that I’d be unhappy if they drafted Lawson, but I over the long run we’d be putting him in a more difficult position to develop.

if you're super high on Lawson, you might want to think about Doug Thonus's proposal re: Trading Rose
Rose has incredible value around the league right now and if you think Lawson is a better fit or is just going to be a better player overall (an unlikely, but not impossible scenario) then it might make sense to trade Derrick. Now, selling that to a fanbase that fell in love with the kid and who occupy the city that he was born and raised in is another story entirely. They’d never do it, but there are reasons to think that maybe they SHOULD do it. For the record, I don’t think they would or should. I do, however, think Lawson is going to be pretty awesome and more of a prototypical PG than Derrick (because he is more of a facilitator and a better shooter than Derrick).

I've thought about it and can't figure out a trade that pisses my "reality" check
I agree that it’d never happen, but beyond that, I can’t figure out a deal that would really make sense for both sides.
When you really start looking at the nuts and bolts of it, who do we trade him for?
Bosh would be the obvious choice, but outside of Bosh, the Raptor’s best player is also a PG. I guess they’d really like Rose, but that kind of trade would create a lot of problems for them as well.
I don’t think the really top notch guys… Wade, Lebron, Howard, Kobe are in any sort of reach even with Rose on the table.
So who’s left? Out of options where I can see the other team maybe saying yes, it would be:
- Chris Paul. Very hard to do because of his contract status, but I can at least imagine that the cash starved Hornets would be willing to trade the expensive Paul for the cheap Rose when coming off their disappointing season. I’d certainly do this were I the Bulls, but we ought to recognize that while Paul is clearly a lot better than Rose, it’s doesn’t solve our problems (weak frontcourt) and in fact makes them sort of harder to solve, by virtue of his making a huge amount more money.
- Amare. But I’m not sure I’d pull the trigger on that, given his variety of injuries over the last couple years, and various questions about his game.
So really, the only deal I can think of as being somewhat in the interest of both teams would be something like Rose for Chris Paul. But, of course, I think it’d be even more difficult to play a Lawson/Paul backcourt than a Lawson/Rose backcourt.
What about you? Can you think of a somewhat realistic Derrick Rose trade?
The only other thing that crossed my mind, and I think it’s pretty hard to fathom trading rose for other unestablished players, would be something like Rose to the Clippers for Eric Gordon and the #1 pick. I’d maybe do that as a Bulls fan, but I don’t know that the cheap ass clip show would. But still, if you end up with Lawson, Eric Gordon, Griffin and Noah all on cheap rookie deals, you’d have something sort of interesting.

I think he'll be solid, but not an all-star.
I watched him a lot in the ACC, and I like the guy, he’s just not all-star material.

I can't wait
to look back on this draft in 3-4 years. I think it may set an all-time record for teams getting it wrong with their picks.
