Should the Bulls look further into trading

Luol Deng for Shaquille O’Neal, or should they let Luol Deng be a Bull for at least another season?

I say don’t trade Deng just yet to the Suns until the Bulls know for sure that Toronto is definately not interested in Deng. Can you imagine the if the Bulls were to pull the trigger and when the Feb trade deadline the Suns trade Deng for Bosh.

Would that mean suns would have amare and bosh

….?

can you imagine

the suns training staff working with deng? none of his many injuries has been career threatening in the traditional sense, save for the achilles tendon.

can you imagine them massaging him through 78-80 games per season for the remainder of his career?

but we'd have a giant expiring

shed tons of capspace, have an actual decent post player who at least could help balance our offense somewhat, and it would only be for a year. We could land 2 free agents in ’10. I wouldnt be completely against it actually….

McGrady

You can do the same kind of deal for Tracy McGrady, one year, 20-million expiring contract, McGrady will even miss half the season (surprise!) with injury, but might be an interesting chip to have if he came back healthy and motivated.

Houston apparently wants a guard, so BG sign-and-trade (I know, I know) and other cap pieces…..

by RichKarp on Jun 16, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

But McGrady doesn’t really fill a need. If healthy he could improve a current good spot, but who knows if that’s the case given how unhealthy he’s been…..I know he’s younger though and do find it a bit intriguing, but not for Luol….

Shaq though is huge and totally fills a need and is going to be more motivated because he wants to play 2 more years after this one (and he did play a lot better last year, even though his team didnt).

He fits a glaring need…..

THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

McGrady had microfracture, he's goig to miss at least half the season

Even when he returns, most guys coming off microfracture have needed a season to get back to remotely close to what they were before. Any trade for McGrady should only be seen as acquiring a massive expiring contract.

What's the point of "balancing the offense" when it's "only for one year?"

The Bulls already have their 1-year rentals in Salmons and Miller. Let’s not get another just to win one more game.

Salmons ,Miller, Shaq, (no Deng) plus trade Kirk all coming off the books by 2010! Wow!

Plus the possible of a 2009 playoff appearance with Shaq aboard!

jerome james also

unless he’d be included for shaq…
and salmons could very well be on through ‘11, though he’ll probably opt out.

I hate, hate, hate this idea. Shaq is washed up and overpaid and we have a better (fit wise) one-year remaining big man

in Brad Miller on the roster. Why send a 23 year old good wing player for a washed up one year rental of the formerly baddest man in the game? Makes no sense.

this may be our only opportunity to get out of the Deng contract

He gives us 2 giant expiring contracts. I don’t believe that Miller is a better fit either. The Bulls need someone they give the ball to in the post in the half court and someone to defensive rebound. Shaq may be washed up, but his washed up was good enough to be a reserve all-star in the Western Conference last season. Add in the fact that he may be actually motivated in a contract season – I think its not a bad idea.

Especially, especially if the Bulls have lost confidence in Deng. The Bulls may believe because of his injury history he is not worth the risk. And since he seems more motivated to play in the Olympics in 2012 than for the Bulls, I don’t know if it is such a horrible idea.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 15, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's a question for you, if we have room for two max contract players in the 2010 summer, what are the odds that we land them both

(small), and what are the odds that we are able to sign a player as good and as young as Deng with that capspace? Not great. Call me risk averse or a Deng apologist, I still think he is a good player and dumping him for nothing seems stupid.

by fundamentallysound on Jun 15, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

i think the chances of signing 2 max players is small

and I hedged my bets by saying I don’t think its a bad idea, but I don’t think its necessarily a good idea either… I’m just not sure. But its not hard to believe the Bulls could land Bosh and Joe Johnson, a top tier guy and a second tier guy.

I think the chances of signing someone as good as Deng with that money are fairly high. Some people would argue that Ariza and Turk are both better than Deng. Others would say Artest is better. (2009 free agents, not guys we sign, but examples). I don’t know if you will find a player as young as Deng for that money, but you certainly can find a player as good as Deng for that money.

I’m not a Deng hater. I think he can still be a good small forward, an NBA championship level small forward. But I’m not married to him either. I don’t think he has proven to be any better than a lot of of other mid level small forwards. If a team came along and they were willing to take his contract off our hands, allowing the Bulls to resign Gordon and/or make a run at a 2010 free agent, than I think I would have to seriously listen to the offer. It all depends on how much faith Bulls management has in Deng to play at the level he played for a 2 week stretch this season. If you think he can be a 18pt 8 reb guy, than you keep him. But if not, than you make a trade.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 15, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I am going to opt for keeping the faith in him for at least another year. I think trading him off for an expiring would

be a case of selling when his value is probably at its absolute nadir.

But, I’m not completely blind to the possibility that he could end up being a millstone for the team, I just don’t think the odds are as great as others seem to think. We seem to be pretty much on the same page, I just have slightly more faith in Deng.

So even giving that Joe Johnson is a big upgrade to Gordon

Is Bosh/Johnson/? really an upgrade to Bosh/Deng/Gordon if the alternative is pulling that off?

by Sports2 on Jun 15, 2009 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

well i was stating that Johnson was an upgrade over Deng

I really was just throwing 2010 guys out there. Johnson was the first second tier guy that came to mind. Under my hypothetical the Bulls would keep Gordon and have Johnson play the 3.

But to answer your question Bosh/Johnson isn’t an upgrade over Bosh/Deng/Gordon. But Johnson is a definite upgrade over Deng, if only because of his ability to stay on the court.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 15, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Couldnt the answer be yes?

Because having one guy who can do the job of two guys means you have an upgrade right. Just hypothetically (so throw the means of getting to this point aside and just consider this for a moment) How would a lineup of Rose, Hinrich, Joe Johnson, Bosh and Noah play out? I’d Argue much better than Rose Gordon Deng Bosh and Noah

We don't need 2 max though

We could land 1 max player and possible 2 of the other players in that fa class, and that class does feature guys beyond the max contract levels who would be considered cream of the crop in other years…

I mean there might be 7-8 max players that year (Stoudemire; Bosh; Nowitzki; Ming; Wade; Roy; James…in a normal year mabe Joe Johnson);

and there’s at least 20 good quality could have a couple max players in a normal free agenty year such as (Pierce—age; Michael Redd; Richard Jefferson; Josh Howard; Carlos Boozer—if he doesn’t opt out this year; TJ Ford (very underrated but frail); Andrea Bargnani (saw some big imp last year); Ginobili….etc etc. etc.

I think given that kind of a class (some of which may be resigned, but there will be a LOT open, I think it’s great to prepare as best you can for that. Having SHAQ’s $20M to go with Miller and likely 1 of James and Tim Thomas to spend would be ridiculous….if we couldn’t spend all of it (I’d hope we didn’t) we could make the offer to keep whoever we keep of Tyrus and Noah (1 of ’em) and save wiggle room for Derrick down the line….

THE BULLS ARE GOING TO WIN IN 2010....maybe by stating this the positive vibes can make it happen.

plus both miller and shaq can only play limited minutes

Joakim gets more chances to play at pf which i think is his natural position, tyrus…ummm trade?

Hopefully the bulls learned from locker room cancers already

Shaq seems to diss a lot of his former teammates (even after lauding them while playing with them) after playing for a new team….

And Shaq being a rental to me would indicate that he could be a distraction to a young team, especially with some work ethic questions now in his later playing days.

Here's what I picture happening with Shaq on the Bulls

Shaq plays about 16 minutes, quits, gets bought out, and the Bulls pay him about $15M to go play for someone else, because they don’t want to end up being the “bad guys”.

In the meantime, they let Ben Gordon walk because he’s asking for too much money.

by Sports2 on Jun 15, 2009 11:21 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

well to pull off the trade, the Bulls would have to match salaries

Tim Thomas and Deng for Shaq, or something like that. It would really have no bearing on the Gordon contract negotiations at all.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 15, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

to clarify

if getting Shaq meant the Bulls would not resign BG, than I would be against a Shaq trade. Buf if getting Shaq only means losing Deng, than I would consider it.

by Basketball Smurf on Jun 15, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

you also have to consider that Shaq is in a contract year

and there would be no way the Bulls would buy Shaq out. He makes too much money.

How many teams does this guy have to submarine before people get a clue?

All he cares about is padding his stats to move up the points and rebounds lists. If he’s not the focal point, he bitches and moans until the coach does so. He has respected exactly 2 coaches in his pro career, Phil and Riley. Anyone want to take a wild guess as to how he will treat Vinny?

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

No Shaq in the CHI!

I mean come on. We don’t have one person on our roster he respects. He’ll demand the ball and destroy the chemistry we just built. I think we should draft two tar heels ( Ellington and Hansbourgh). If Gordon wants to leave, its not a big deal cause Salmons can move to SG. He plays better D anyway. Let’s just improve our young talent and gear up for next off season.
