Should we save cap for 2010 or 2011?

I haven't heard many people talk about this, so I am bring it up.  Could the summer of 2011 be more important for the Bulls than 2010?  2010 marks the potential free agency of a number of superstars looking to receive ridiculously long expensive contracts.  The summer of 2011 marks the end of those kinds of deals and probably a whole new cap system.

I just wonder if all of the posters (and sports writers) playing the role of GM and trying to reduce the team's salary cap enough to sign a max player in 2010, haven't thought everything through. Wade vs. Bosh and  BG vs Hinrich have ignored the fact that in one year the strategies GMs employ for building teams will change completely.  The new CBA in 2011 is likely going to reduce the average salary of players (greatly reducing the salaries of elite players).  If the Bulls are not careful, they could destroy their future by spending too much now and finding out that they have no more money to spend in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Various posts, guessing how the new CBA wil be different, generally assume that we will see smaller salaries for elite level players and slightly higher salaries for the lowest caliber players.  There is also talk about a hard cap.  Could you imagine filling out a team with a hard cap, when you've committed $50 million to two players; obviously we don't know what the hard cap will be, but it sounds like it would not be higher than what the luxury tax is now.

I just wonder if the Bulls could position themselves to have money for 2011 to sign quality free agents at a fraction of the cost of 2010.  There aren't any Boshs or Wades, but I wouldn't mind a team with a bargain  Kirilenko, Carmelo, and Rose.

This is the reason 2010 has so many elite free agents, every player wants to get paid before the rules are restructured and they can no longer make as much money per contract.  Could the Bulls take advantage?

The most significant CBA rule change could be the switch to

nonguarenteed contracts. Eddy Curry would be gone, for example. The Bulls have Jerome James. Just this change alone would significantly ease a team’s ability to make trades, fit under the LT, and renegotiate contracts. The players that deserve large salaries would actually be getting them.

Right, but what you're saying is...

By signing a player, after the new CBA, you run a lot less risk. Isn’t that worth waiting for?

Yes...for second tier players. Maybe even first tier players

Wouldn’t it have been nice to have Ben Wallace on that kind of a contract.

kirk hinrich back in chicago?

Hinrich goes to portland, plays a bit, and then in 2011 hinrich comes back as a reserve guard for the bulls!?! For a contract fitting a reserve? Man i would so love that

Well, if he's starting, then he warrants about 8 million.

If he’s coming off the bench, then 5 or 6 million, so, while 12-15 million would be a lowball offer, it wouldn’t be completely absurd, and with the economy, that might be about right for Kirk.

Things could be worse. We could have kept Boylan.

well, I don't think he would want to be a reserve, either.

He will look for a place that will give him a starting job and I believe he will be able to find one

Great post, Jamaicanpi. Some good food for thought...
