Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Tip Of The Hat To Bulls & Their Fans

Just wanted to give some respect to the Bulls organization and you the fans.  Couldn't have asked for a more competitive series and I'm happy that it involved another storied franchise (Chicago).  Just a classic, classic series.

Clearly you guys would have preferred to move on, but you have a whole lot to be excited about in the years ahead.  You don't need me to tell you that Derrick Rose has no ceiling.  I have a feeling Ben Gordon will be back nailing impossible shots for you once again.  TT and Noah will be swatting shots for years to come.

I know there was a lot of controversy with the calls and especially surrounding Rondo and I know quite a few Celtics fans got under your skin for defending our guy.  Please take that for what it is: fans looking for the best in our guys.  I still don't understand all the nuances about what makes a flagrant call or what doesn't, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter anymore.  Agree or disagree with the league's decision, both teams had dozens of chances to win or lose the series.

The Bulls proved that they are already a very, very good team and I think they've proved that they have a great future as well.  I've enjoyed sharing thoughts with most you here on Blog-a-Bull and on CelticsBlog.  So hats off to you and best of luck this offseason and beyond.  Cheers.

Good luck in the second round.

That was one awesome series. And I enjoyed blogging with you and the other guys at CeltisBlog as well. It was a nice change to banter with “the enemy”. But just like a good fight in the ring, it’s time to hug and say “good fight, man, good fight. You deserved it.”

Celtics, thanks for all the fun and some valuable lessons

Celtics always were the better of the two teams, and they earned their win. Great job, and go get the Magic. Any real Chicago basketball fan knows that it is the teams that play defense and make adjustments from game to game that deserve to win in the playoffs.

What a blessing this series has been for the Bulls! If Rose is not motivated by what Rondo did to him, he is not the competitor we think he is. Noah played with surprising consistency and showed that he could be a guy who plays 30min a game on a good team. And we received further confirmation that Gordon, Thomas, Salmons, Miller, and Hinrich were more or less who we thought they were – for better and for worse. And, of course, we were treated to a seven-game festival of coaching ineptitude – sorry, Vinny, it’s not your fault that your were hired for this job.

Here’s hope that Bulls and Celtics meet in the playoffs again next year – with a healthy KG back to his Hall-of-Fame best, and an improved Bulls roster guided by a competent coach.

I'd put become a better playmaker on his to-do list right up there with defense.

His strength is pushing the pace and finishing, but he also has the ability to become a 10+ apg PG.

It was a fun series; good luck in the second round.

Thanks, Jeff.

I think the commentators who talked about parity in this series hit it right on the head. With Garnett, the Celtics are a great team, but without Garnett, the Celtics are an average team with great heart. The Bulls meantime were an above-average team talent-wise with below average coaching and, in the case of Tyrus Thomas, below-average focus. I believe that this series would have been won by the Bulls if we didn’t spot the Celtics a head coach. This ended up being a head start provided to the Celtics that the Bulls ultimately could not overcome. Can you imagine what a competent coach could have done with the shooters and athletes on the Bulls team?

The questions regarding Rondo are serious ones to Bulls fans. Let me be clear: I don’t buy conspiracy theories. And I don’t think Rondo is evil incarnate or anything; he’s just a good player who did whatever he felt it took to win, and whose emotions got the better of him. But I also genuinely felt the league was blatantly incorrect to let a lot of that stuff go, particularly the closed-fisted strike on Miller’s head. Tossing Hinrich into the scorer’s table was also excessive.

It seems like Boston fans say things like, “It wasn’t called a flagrant, so it wasn’t flagrant” or “He intended to make a play on the ball” or “It doesn’t matter what actually happened. Let’s all just move on.” And all of these are valid points.

As a Bulls fan, I’ll readily acknowledge that the Bulls lost this series with their piss-poor play in games 3 and 7, and NOT because the refs did them wrong. But at the same time, it’s very, very easy to look at Rondo’s actions and clearly assess the refs’ calls as just completely off.

That said, he’s a great, young PG and I hope that someday Rose can average a triple double through 5 crucial playoff games, and can rack up assists like Rondo did.

Also, since it seems I’m talking to a Celtics fan with a very reasonable temperament, I’ll just mention: I loved Kevin Garnett until he won his first championship. At that point, he became an unsufferable prick. I realize his trashmouth is how he keeps his team going, but he’s really annoying, and I can’t wait until he gets his nice, tall glass of shut-the-hell-up.

But then again, people used to say how annoying Rodman later with Nocioni were, and now say the same with Noah, although none of those guys came close to the skill level of Garnett.

Overall, the Celts won it with more heart and better coaching, but as they said, they still had to hit the tough shots and make the tough plays, and they certainly did that. Thanks for reaching out in this extremely classy post, and thanks for listening to me drone on.

thanks

totally understand how other fans might a) hold Rondo’s actions against him, b) dislike Garnett’s antics, and c) dislike Perkins and his football mentality

hopefully you’ll understand how we still love these guys either in spite of or maybe even because of all that same stuff and because they are our guys

Yes, absolutely.

The Celtics are winners; no one can take this away from them.

By the way, something else I forgot to mention was that unlike how KG grates on me more and more, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen remained extremely likeable and my respect for them as competitors grew. So it’s not like I hated all Celtics or anything.

Anyway, thanks again for a very nice post.

Excellent series and I will be rooting for the Celts going forward

as for the flagrant controversies, I just wish the league could find some way to have consistency, that is all. There isn’t a clear cut way to dish out punishment, and I know there will always be some gray area, but the whole process just seems too complicated right now.

Rondo and Rose, just wow. I enjoyed watching that battle big time and will be happy to watch them go at it for years to come. Although, I do admit that it was disappointing seeing Rondo trying to win an oscar when Noah fouled him in game 7. In my opinion, if you are going to dish out the hard fouls he did in games 5 and 6, you should take it like a man when it comes back around. I would hold other Bulls players accountable for this as well. That’s just me though…I know others go by the win at all costs regardless of honor angle, so it depends I suppose.

In any event, good luck with the Magicians. And I’m glad we all have a series to remember for a long, long time.

Series for the ages - your post is appreciated.

This series had elation mixed with despair so many times it was the elixir to induce Manic-Depressive illness. I also posted on CelticsBlog and found the fans rapid, hospitable and extremely knowlegeable. This series will always unite Celtic and Bulls fans. Your comments are appreciated. My concern about the future is that two years ago I thought we were on the rise only to experience a precipitous fall. Good luck against Orlando!

Usually when my team gets booted from the playoffs I really dislike them. Sometimes for several years to come, sometimes forever.

But after this grueling series I can’t help but think I know the Celts a whole lot better now after watching them so much against my team that I may just root for them -
I’d rather see them contend in the Finals instead of the Cavs or Magic, that’s for sure.
Cheers…

I can't believe how fake some people are.

A week ago the majority of this site wanted Rondo’s head on a platter and now you all have your tails between your legs because we lost and this guy came on to say it was a nice series. I do NOT want the Celtics to move on to play the Cavs in the finals. I want them to get swept next round and Rondo get suspended for at least 2 games because that’s what he’s owed.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice gesture to come on here and leave a post like this because it was the best series I’ve ever seen…Bulls series at least but don’t be fake and act like you are rooting for the Celtics now. I’m not.

Some people truly respect the Celtics more after that epic series. That’s all. I still hope they get swept by the Cavs, but that’s just me. You’re not more of a fan because you want them to get swept next round and Rondo get’s suspended. To me, make up calls don’t give me any satisfaction. It wasn’t called when it should have been, so for them to lose against Orlando isn’t going to make me feel better about the NBA.

Funny, but I kind of hope the Celts go very far in these playoffs (the farthest possible),

because that would maybe be a positive indication of the potential of this Bulls team for the future. If the Celtics are swept by the Magic in the next round, what does it say about the Bulls (not much, but it can’t be as positive as the other scenario) ?

I think we all know who the Bulls are and who the Celtics are.

We don’t need the Celtics to worm their way up through the playoffs for us to know our team needs serious work or that our series had serious flaws. Did you feel good when Miami won it all after beating us? I sure didn’t. It would be one thing if the Celtics had been a stunning example of excellent basketball and good sportsmanship but they weren’t.

I am not sure if they are ready to put up the $$

to test that theory. At the beginning of the year they were more than willing to try anyone BUT Gordon at the starting two position. Even Thabo of all people. And that was with Gordon averaging 17-20pts per game his entire career. For whatever reason that wasn’t enough back then and I don’t think it is enough reason now despite yet another good year from him. Even less so now that they have Rose and Salmons (though I don’t think Salmons has the age/contract/proven consistency to warrant a comparison to Gordon…). They have been consistently trying to find ways to not need Gordon, even made up ones. I am thinking they are going to take the plunge next year and see what life without Gordon is like.

I am not rooting for them,

though I have nothing against Allen or Pierce for the most part. The rest of their team I have no respect for after this. Their game revolves around getting away with crap on a play by play basis and Rondo in particular got out of control and dirty on top of his already annoying habit of flopping and laying around on the floor like he is injured every time he falls down. Not really pretty basketball at all. Personally, I am more interested in the West right now or perhaps seeing a highlight of Rondo getting hard fouled or something.

Screw the Celtics

The players are dirty—a bunch of floppers and foulers. Rondo is learning that long-time Celtics tradition well, same with Big Baby. That fat ass fell down 15 times a game, sometimes without any contact. I’ve never seen a guy on the bench (KG) talk so much trash during a game before. Totally classless. Pierce was a whiny, underacheiving loser before last year, then he gets two HOFers and suddenly he cares about winning more than anything?

I have disliked this franchise forever. They think they are entitled to special treatment because of their history, but they were coming off of 20 years of irrelevance before stealing KG from a former Celtic. They have always had dirty players on the team. And Bulls fans should not forget we got David Greenwood instead of Larry Bird thanks to some shady Celtics maneuvering the year before.

I’d rather see the Cavs and Magic in the Finals, at least they will have earned it. Hopefully Boston’s drift back towards irrelevance starts with KG’s knees and the rest of the league won’t rescue them again.

by nateroth on May 5, 2009 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

Does Davis ever actually try to play interior defense?

Or does his bitch ass just collapse to the floor every time trying to draw a charge? I loathe that team; they truly might be the most eminently dislikable team I’ver ever seen. And why has Perkins permanently fixed his face into that ridiculous snarl? Does he think that makes him look tough? Because it makes him look like a total retard. Somebody should point out to him that he really is not that cool.

I wouldn’t feel better about the Bulls at all if the Celtics were to go deep into the playoffs, and I would have felt perfectly awesome if the Bulls would have beaten a Celtics fan that was shorthanded because of suspensions.

Posts like this seem ridicoulous…absurd and just plain ignorant….The celtics werent the only ones flopping trying to draw fouls or playing physical/dirty…the god damn bulls did the same thing…get a clue

by PaintItBlack on May 7, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

lmfao…nice overexageration ya fool…..Hinrich initiated that whole play, pushing and overly boxing out rondo at the 3 pt line…rondo swung him off of him, and then hinrich came after him and then nothing happened.

Brad millers entire role for your team was to be an instigator, a flopper, and a bullier…sorry bulls fans, just facts of life. all ben gordon did was flop. he got to the line more then any celtic in the series, Joakim Noah was giving hard fouls, dont act like he wasnt…the entire bulls team was playing just as physical as the celtics…sorry.

by PaintItBlack on May 8, 2009 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

overexaggeration?

that’s what happened, he flung him by the arm into the scorer’s table. and you can see what you wanted to see on the play, but hinrich had every reason to box the little fucker out since he had been averaging a triple double, and rondo had no reason to fling him, or hit brad miller in the face for that matter.

not saying the bulls didn’t play physical, but they didn’t play like douchebags.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on May 8, 2009 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Count the stitches for the series.

The Bulls were clearly on the losing end. We don’t even have guys (besides Miller who showed extreme restraint after being hit in the face multiple times that series) who can deal any real hard fouls. Noah doesn’t even have the body build to throw a hard, legal screen. Forget illegal screen. Our team doesn’t have the personal to play as dirty as the Celtics.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on May 8, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

At first I wondered what Hinrich did to Rondo

To get flung into the scorer’s table. I had a hard time believing that a guy could do something so obvious like whipping him aropund by the arm…. something had to happen.

Then I watched the tape and it sure seemed unprovoked by Hinrich. Rondo is a dirty player. Calculated dirty player, trying to get guys thrown out IMO by starting crap, or getting any advantage possible by flopping, exaggerating “falls” and fouls pretending to writhe in pain.
Funny thing is that he is a quality player and has no need to stoop to those levels.

What I am afraid of most

Is if D Rose becomes a poster boy for the league and the refs start giving him and the Bulls an added advantage…
Afterall, any storied franchise with a big following and hostory of multiple championships sells a lot of tickets, especially when they have a bankable star player (jersey sales are already there)….

God I hope the Bulls don’t get preferential treatment. I really like them being the engine that could, the underdog. It’s so much less sickening to watch.

It is too dangerous for a guy like Rose

not to get calls when they drive to lane and get hammered. There has to be some kind of payoff. I doubt if every Bull will get under that umbrella, but I’d be fine if Rose did. His style of game is the type that earns it at least. He does get hammered.
