Whoa! Pre-draft Measurements are up!!
One of my favorite days of the year! I'll post more as I look into this, but a few things stand out height-wise:
- Blake Griffin is 6'8.25" without shoes, a bit undersized (same height as Hansbrough!)
- BJ Mullens is 6'11.75" without shoes, that's enormous and bigger than his college list.
- DaJuan Blair is 6'5.25" without shoes, which is about what I expected and possible cause for slipping to our first pick (!!)
- Terrence Williams is 6'5" without shoes, good news for those (me) wanting to take him if we don't get Blair.
Other notes:
Hansbrough I think checks out as most surprising overall, not only because he's taller than expected, but his 6'11.5" wingspan is fairly decent for a PF.
DaJuan Blair's 7'2" wingspan is scary. That's longer than BJ Mullens'.
Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, Eric Maynor, and Chase Budinger have no wingspans. I'd expect nothing from them defensively.
Hasheem Thabeet checks out. He's taller than Shaq by 0.25" with the same 9'5" standing reach. Soft as he may be, he's in line to be an absolute defensive stud.
Edit #1: Looks like they're adding names to the list throughout the day... other notable names...
Jodie Meeks is 6'3" without shoes, that's better than I expected and bigger than Marcus Thornton and Stephen Curry. His 6'4.5" wingspan won't help, though.
My main man Luke Harangody is just 6'6.25" without shoes with just a 6'9.75" wingspan. Oh well.
I always liked Taj Gibson, and he measured well. 6'8.5" without shoes, and his 7'4" wingspan rivals Thabeet's.
James Harden (6'10.75" wingspan), Gerald Henderson (6'10.25" wingspan), and Tyreke Evans (6'11.25" wingspan) are all freaks. If Evans could shoot at all I think he'd be a great fit with Rose.
Austin Daye is actually taller than his already huge 6'10" list. He's 6'9.75" without shoes, making him a nearly 6'11" SF who can launch 3s. If we're thinking of trading Deng, Daye deserves a look at #16, soft as he is.

Earl Clark's
stock just went up. 7’ 2" wingspan and 9’1" reach. And he’s 6’ 8 1/2" w/o shoes. Bulls can trade up for him in the 6th pick range, right?

Don't fall in love too much w/ measurements.
Especially w/ Clark. The guys has the athletic ability and skills to dominate, and now we know he’s effin’ huge. Why did he disappear so damn much against college players, then?
Considering we can already “eyeball measure” players, definitive measurements should have a mild effect on the evaluation of a player.

I was referreing to his
stock going up in the eyes of others. I like him even w/o the measurement info. What I don’t like is the coaching in place in Chicago because I don’t think the Bulls have developmental coaches. I think they should trade all of their picks for current NBA players, but if they can work a deal to get a talent like Clark, maybe the next coach will have something better to work with.

I am going to try and make a post
to put some of these measurements in perspective.
Like is a 9’ reach good for someone who is 7’ tall, etc.

It's disappointing
that they didn’t have any speed measurements. Length is only so important.

They haven't
done the agility testing yet. It will follow.

Why does anyone care how tall someone is without shoes on?
Since when do NBA players not wear shoes during games?

For standardization
With-shoe heights add as little as 0.75" (James Johnson, Tyler Smith) to 1.75" (Earl Clark). Shoes can change, actual height not as much.

Then just get players some bigger shoes
Maybe if you gave BG some stilts, he would no longer be considered undersized.

How do they usually list heights on NBA rosters?
With shoes on I would assume?
Plus, I highly doubt Blair is going to want his NBA team to list him as 6’5". Heh. Thank God for his wingspan.

You can't make as much money
if you list the players’ height without shoes.
Barkley is 6’8"!

From what I've noticed, they round up from the height w/ shoes.
Actually, I doubt the media information people (or whoever actually list this stuff) even look at these things. The Bulls org probably measures their own players in shoes, rounds up from there, either 1", 2", who cares?
I’ve seen Kobe listed anywhere from 6’6" to 6’8". That’s too much for someone who’s been in the league so long. (I’d guess he’s around 6’6".)

I'm pretty sure that they don't even base it on actual managements.
Guys are just asked how tall they want to be.

If this allows Blair to slip to 16, I'm all for it.
6’5" PF for the win!

Blake Griffin isn't undersized at all.
The tallest PF’s are 7’0", a few are 6’11". Most are between 6’9" – 6’11". That’s listed height, which Griffin’s will likely be at 6’10".
I’m sure someone could do a study (Jamaincanpi???) to list height w/o shoes of the “Top 20” PF’s in the league (sure starters), and I’d bet Griffin is smack in the middle. Not being oversized doesn’t make him undersized.

I shouldn't say that so definitively in my subject.
I’m not 100% sure, but I’d bet on it.

According to DX the average height for PFs drafted in the top 15 in 6'8.5"
without shoes. His wingspan and standing reach are a little below average, but he certainly has the strength and likely the explosive jumping ability to compensate.
by Scotter on May 29, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, that's one way to look at it and probably pretty close, but it's little bit circular.
I mean, guys who don’t have “good” height, typically aren’t drafted in the Top 15 so it probably forces the height up.
The few players who I could think of that would bring down the height (even if only a tiny bit), weren’t drafted in the Top-15: Boozer and Millsap.
But the standing reach and wingspan definitely go back to the undersized comment. I’m so locked into discussing “height” as the only “size” issue.

He looks plenty fine to me
I’m interested to see that despite being called undersized since he was three years old, Tyler Hansbrough is similarly not undersized himself.
by Sports2 on May 29, 2009 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
my thinking on Hansborough
has completely changed over the last month. I always thought he was ridiculously over-hyped in college and wouldn’t do squat in the NBA. But now I think he could be a decent 3rd or 4th big man and would be a good pick at 26. I think he will be able to consistently hit an 18 to 20 footer in the NBA which is pretty essential for a power forward. Add in the fact that he is a hard worker who will run the floor, and I can see Tyler being a decent compliment to Tyrus (or Bosh/Amare).

I agree. At this point he's got value written all over him
As long as people don’t go ape-shit with expectations, he looks like a good pick. Of course, I don’t trust the Bulls not to go ape-shit over him, but…
Honestly, I’m not even sure I wouldn’t take him at 16. I look at this draft and just don’t see a whole lot to like. I haven’t really looked in tremendous depth, but I just don’t see a lot of guys I think are going to be obvious starter or better players.
Speaking of that, I also can’t believe Lawson gets no love. I know he’s small, but he very much seems like what we would have liked Jay Williams to be. He’s fast as shit, can shoot, can distribute, can get inside… what else does the kid have to do?
This just seems like one of those drafts that everyone knows is “down” so people are reacting by looking for the guys with prototype size and upside and heavily discounting the guys who’ve demonstrated a lot (both in terms of productivity and skill) already.
And oh yeah, I wouldn’t touch Thabeet in the top ten. What the hell.

I don't think I'd have a problem with Hansborough at 16 if Blair and a couple of other guys are gone.
All the winner stuff will be annoying, but there’s enough to like in terms of actual ability. Coming away with one front line player that can add some muscle and be effective in limited minutes would be one of my goals for this draft. He’ll at least be able to make an impact in limited minutes, and maybe he’ll turn out better. I have more confidence in Hansborough making an NBA impact than I do most of the wings and PGs available at 16.

He is actually on the very small side in terms of wingspan and standing reach. Givony, DraftExpress:
-Blake Griffin measured out well from a height perspective, but he doesn’t appear to have great length at all. His standing reach and wingspan are both far below average for a power forward, which likely helps explain why he is such an unimposing defender and shot-blocker. In fact, amongst the 42 power forwards in our database who were selected as top-15 picks, Griffin is just a quarter of an inch from ranking dead last in the wingspan category, and an inch from ranking dead last in standing reach. Yikes.

If DeJuan Blair

Mullens is
7’1.25’’ with shoes on. A 7’1 center with that kind of athletic ability is going to be hard to pass on.

Athletic ability fine….but you need skills and work ethic to get better too.
Olowokandi was a 7 footer with athletic ability too.
