The NCAA “amateur athlete” is a joke and I am under no illusions that Rose went to Memphis for academics. That said, I would care if the player was Rose. Rose is a nice story for the city and the team and a SAT cheating episode tarnishes it. It sounds corny, but his history of relying on his family to overcome a lousy neighborhood, stay out of trouble and accomplish some positive things is good for kids to hear. Cheating is not really compatible with that. Selfishly, I do not want to hear about this “scandal” from the media and opposing fans for the rest of Rose’s career. It will be a perpetual annoyance.

People will forget about this pretty quickly

Lebron James got a Hummer in high school, and was temporarily declared ineligible. That was a huge story at the time, but people hardly mention it anymore. If Rose ends up being as good as we all think he can be, this will be only a footnote in his career.

I agree Big D

But, here’s the thing: This is an opportunity to actually fix the whole thing. No Bulls fan cares. Nobody was under the illusion this guy was going to Memphis to become a Rhodes Scholar, unless becoming one of the most dominant PG’s, if not the most dominant, for over a decade qualifies.

Yeah, like the time when everyone in Chicago shunned Jordan for his gambling addiction

Or Pippen for his domestic abuse case, or Rodman with his rampant alcoholism? Yep, their reputations are sullied forever because of their character flaws.

But this isn't solely about off the court

It is strictly about eligibility to stay on the court.

What you reference are infractions that many people make, certainly adults. But they do suffer real consequences.

Derrick may not have known about what was going on which is even more troubling. It’s more than possible that he took the test, took the classes, and had OTHER people change his grades and submit other people’s results to pass as his own. The ends are to maintain his eligibility to play the game of basketball, but this is clearly cheating the standards by which enable him to play at the level he allegedly needs to create the best chances for himself. The other roads are far less traveled and littered with guys that didn’t make it.

Now, Michael Jordan never cheated when he gambled. At least not with houses with penalties that have real world consequences. But suppose Michael was trying to change his bets at the roulette table.

They are starting to talk out of both sides of their mouths now.

These guys are majoring in basketball. We all know that. They don’t even make them finish out more than a year of school. College basketball is a business, not school. And the colleges make a ton of money from that business side of things. Seems like every few years this flairs up but it happens all the time. So why is is popping up this time?

Ever listen to Rose talk?

As several people here have pointed out before, he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if he had to cheat on his SAT’s to become eligible. Fortunately you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to be a great basketball player. It’s sad that the NBA age limit has forced kids who can’t academically qualify to take these kinds of measures, instead of letting them go pro and earn an honest living.

This is of course of total myth

Basketball players can play pro ball without a high school diploma. You’re are talking about the big leagues and suggesting that is some sort of unfair barrier to entry. The NBA is a cartel. It can make any rules it wants. Memphis has to abide by NCAA rules to participate in their cartel.

Of course not

So the perpetrators of the deception must suffer the equitable consequences. Blaming the cartel when they put their rules in writing is low brow comedy at best.

If you want to sing on the biggest stage the academics are the easiest hurdle.

I commend guys like Brandon Jennings. He did sell himself short on the academics, but he expressed no interest at all in trying to improve in this area. His parents were on board. He fled to Italy for a sabbatical.

The good news is that just getting Brandon Jennings out of his American habitat has probably taught him so much he may end up wanting to finish college some day.

By "perpetrators," do you mean Memphis?

Because Rose sure isn’t going to suffer many consequences. I guess it’s possible he might lose out on some endorsements, but he has so little charisma that he wasn’t going to be a big endorsement guy anytime soon anyways. Considering he parlayed his one year at Memphis into being the #1 pick and becoming a millionaire, it’s hard to argue he didn’t make the right choice, unfortunately.

Look at the other side

Derrick stays at Memphis. He now is under pressure from the NCAA who can lean on him for information to determine the actual events that led to his surprise, last minute decision to attend Memphis.

Going pro gives Derrick the individual a clean slate. It’s done the same for Reggie Bush. Marcus Camby never paid a price.

LBJ went to the NBA right out of high school.

Now that it isn’t an option you are likely going to see more talented guys “squeak” through. (Not saying James couldn’t have gotten in to college. He just got to avoid the year of free labor guys down the line are doing for these college$.)

That being said, I just checked out the ACT/SAT for entering Memphis…looks like they enroll houseplants there. You don’t even have to hardly crack 20 on your ACTs to be an average student there. Cheating to get into there shows you are extremely desperate. Probably hadn’t paid attention to school since 6th grade. Which why would you if you have your vocation figured out. I know I haven’t used algebra since school.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on May 27, 2009 10:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And 20 is not a high ACT score either

I think you get 15 points just for putting your name on the exam, so if you can’t break a 20, you have no business being anywhere near college. It says a lot about how corrupt big-time college sports is that they actually want these kids and try to pass them off as real students. I love the shit about “Oh, the kids need an education” . . . yeah, they needed one in grammar school and high school! If they haven’t gotten one by that point (and you obviously haven’t if you get that low a ACT score), college isn’t going to do much good.

The NCAA rewards cheaters with bigger jobs and paychecks, and they punish them with the stupidest policy ever, “OK folks, we’re going to pretend none of this ever happened, shame on all of you.”

I find it hard to lay any blame on Rose when Mayo, Beasley, and God knows how many other athletes have been used by universities as cash cows for their athletic programs. The only thing Rose is guilty of is being a bad student.

From the Sun-Times:
Luther Topps, who coached Rose’s club basketball team with Derrick’s brother Reggie, has been aware of the NCAA investigation for three weeks. According to Topps, the NCAA threatened to revoke former Simeon player Tim Flowers college eligibility if Flowers didn’t agree to an interview.

‘‘Tim told me the NCAA kept bothering him,’’ Topps said. ‘‘That if he didn’t talk they were going to take away his eligibility. [The NCAA] thinks that [former Simeon player Kevin Johnson] took [the SAT test] for him.’’

Dammit, how come I didn’t think of that for my law school exams?

Every top player like Rose, should he so choose, can turn to any number of hovering professional sports agents for anything he needs.

Even a high enough test score (Rose denies in the letter any wrongdoing).

It might have been Memphis, an obvious beneficiary of his eligibility, which did it. It also might have been someone who wanted to curry favor with him and his family so that after he did his six months at college, he might sign with them. Rose might not have even known about what the NCAA richly describes as "fraudulence and misconduct."

Rose probably didn’t do it himself, because if you’re capable of figuring out how to fix the SAT you probably don’t have to.

Apparently it took Rose three tries to get a score in the mid 700’s. Not 700 for the reading or math section – mid 700’s for both.

Technically,

Rose wouldn’t have to know if someone took the test for him after he tried himself. All he would know was that he had taken the test and that the college accepted him. He wouldn’t know which SAT score the college had on file. Someone around him could have set that up and given him the plausible denial angle which is why he is looking pretty silly denying all of that.

Couldn’t Memphis accept him even if he was stupid? They have control over who they accept, right? If they want to accept someone not very bright why couldn’t they? Looking at their admissions info they already do enroll not so smart people.

There's more . . .

http://www.suntimes.com/news/education/1596666,derrick-rose-simeon-grades-cheat-memphis.article

Someone with access to Derrick Rose’s academic records at Simeon High School changed a D to a C, boosting the future Bulls Rookie of the Year’s transcript for college, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times today.

Who falsified the records in the grade-changing scandal remains a mystery that the Chicago Public Schools has been unable to solve.

Rose, 20, was one of four Simeon athletes whose grades were boosted for a one-month period after their June 2007 graduation and then changed back after the bogus transcripts had been sent to colleges, according to sources and a report by the CPS inspector general.

"None of the grade changes were supported by any documentation," Inspector General James Sullivan wrote in the 2008 annual report.

The students were not named in the report, but sources told the Sun-Times Rose was one of the four.

Wow the NCAA is serious

This comes from the espn article

“The NCAA has asked Memphis to provide copies of the SAT and a Sept. 2, 2008, report by a forensic document examiner who studied the handwriting in the SAT.”

Really … just to see if he cheated. It’s funny how they are probing Mayo and Rose now. I think it’s clearly because they left early and the NCAA was issue with that. If these kids would of stayed in school the NCAA wouldn’t looking into this.

by Bullsfanla on May 28, 2009 6:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

huh
I think it’s clearly because they left early and the NCAA was issue with that. If these kids would of stayed in school the NCAA wouldn’t looking into this.

It’s the exact opposite. If Mayo and Rose were still in school they could be forced by the NCAA to cooperate with an investigation into their recruitment. The NCAA could suspend their eligibility if they refused to cooperate. It’s a sensitive subject that requires privacy, but the NCAA, the schools, their athletic departments, the coaches, and the player would all know about it. That’s a lot of potential sources for leaks.

Going pro was the best thing Mayo and Rose could do to protect themselves and leave the schools on the hook.

This is a good book that examines the commercial shoe industry’s role in securing their bottomline and how they navigate the rules of the NCAA and the NBA.

And had very successful rookie season’s? Yet another attempt to bemurch the kids who come out early. If they were white, it wouldn’t work. There wouldn’t be as much outrage guaranteed.

I’m a white guy from California. I don’t give a damn about NCAA academic standards since they’re a joke anyway. Any institution that allows players like Ruben Patterson to go to school for 4 years is a complete JOKE. And Patterson is just one of many. And for crying out loud, Patterson even had to go to a JUCO first.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
