Luol Deng, playing for Great Britain

Story originally found here, but that links to here if you don't want to click through.

Who's ready for more injuries next season? Yay!

...

Additionally, Doug Thonus ran a story much like this one a day and four hours ago on that site that's not live yet. chicagonow.com. I'd put a link but I don't know how ... great that would be.

Since this has only been reported on Thonus's website in a couple places [a forum post and blog post: and in Thonus's case he poo-poohs it a lot] and the website linked above, I'm not sure if it's entirely accurate, but the sources seem trustworthy.

Yeah, this was a long time ago.

This was before he had his “setbacks” and decided to sit out the rest of the season. Hopefully now he realizes his injury is more serious and he needs to rest this summer.

exactly.

someone linked on the comments in the first page to a more recent article that says he is on GB’s roster and that his rehab is going well, and while it does say that it looks like he’ll be available, it doesn’t make any guarantees.

AARRRRR.

I wonder why he is in the NBA at all. If he wants to pay back GB for all that it has done for him perhaps he should retire from the NBA and run basketball clinics and charities there while not playing for their basketball team. He could tour the empire with one of the princes and pay back England for the rest of his life. It doesn’t sound like he has the priorities to play for the NBA. He definitely doesn’t have the body to play basketball year round. I get why Yao Ming has to play for China despite injury. They own him. Chalk this up to another stupid move by Bulls management. They picked a homer but a homer for the wrong freak’n team. Deng is working himself into one of the most expensive backup SF jobs in the NBA.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Agreed--

There will be plenty of time to spread good will among Brits toward basketball, and to support charities, after he is retired.

As it is, his career doesn’t scream “iron man” to me, so it could be a relatively brief one in the NBA.

That is not true.

It would have appeared dishonorable for him to quit unless absolutely necessary, particularly during the culmination of the Chinese globalist project; but to threaten his family could spawn an international incident.

It is notable that the Chinese spun his being hurt in the first place as mistreatment by uncaring self-interested American handlers, just as the American media portrayed his playing through injury as a decision made at gunpoint.

by cranscape on May 25, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, in that case, "The Americans couldn't care less about him."

That’s just as true, if we’re being literal. Not only is the NBA not the country’s most popular sport, the Bulls aren’t the NBA’s most popular team and Deng is definitely NOT the most popular Bull. On the other hand, he probably IS the most popular British basketball player. In the general consciousness of Americans, Luol Deng is faaaaaaaarrrrrrr down the list of a god-awful amount of Americans’ interests.

So if one were to assume SlamDunk meant “[Those] Brits [who care about British basketball] couldn’t care less about him,” just as one might assume “[Those Americans who care about Chicago Bulls basketball] couldn’t care less about him” if we’re on this site, then I am most certainly correct in saying it is “untrue”.

the I would assume he meant those

To think that trading Luol Deng and BG for Kobe Bryant was even a possibility...

Ludicrous if you ask me.

(Yeah, I know that kobe would have vetoed the trade had Luol been a part of it. That is even more nuts. Good for him that there was no trade, though…)

heh
Luol feels a sense of duty as far as GB is concerned but he also loves playing for the team and in the style that Coach Finch plays

How about, I don’t know, feeling a sense of duty to the team that’s paying you $72 mill?

This is the latest on Deng

click. Otherwise, what he said in March still stands and still pisses a lot of people off. Who cares if he said it in March. He hasn’t retracted it, and what Thorpe says about him needing to stay off it through the summer stays true. With such an invisible fracture like he has I don’t know why it should be up to Deng to say if it is healed or not. No one can see it. He can’t see it. He can only tell us if it hurts or not and it hurting or not also doesn’t indicate if it is actually 100% either.

It is like when you are kid and have a tummy ache and your parents let you stay home from school. By 11 AM you can’t suddenly decide you feel better and should be allowed to go play outside. You still have to go through the motions of being sick the rest of the day just to be sure you don’t set yourself off again. And the last thing you want is your parents wondering if you even had pains in the first place. He pretty much blew off the entire season. The consequences of that should be to take it easy during the off season and be 100% when the NBA starts up again.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

People are reacting like it's new news

The articles are in British papers, where the general reader’s concern is that he does play, so of course it’s going to be phrased in the way that is most irritating to people here who don’t want him to play. The writer used words like “defy” and “adamant” in building the story. Thorpe basically said Lu really wants to help in some capacity, and once he’s healthy he’ll figure out what he can do with the Bulls doctors and Great Britain.

If people want to be pissed now about something from March, fine – but they should recognize that it’s not something that just came out, and that the original article doesn’t even actually include a quote from Lu.

also, that latest article

says the games start sept 7th. as much as i am going to be annoyed if he ends up playing, that is like a month before training camp starts. it’s not playing the whole summer, it’s playing for a MONTH. as long as he pretty much takes off the rest of the summer, i don’t know if i can be THAT angry.

but more recent stuff had been toning down his “defying trainer” bullshit that this article talks about. iirc he was very much going to consider if the bulls asked him not to play.

I told you all about this guy 2 years ago.

I told anybody who would listen that to put trust in Deng is trust misplaced. And that offering him a lot of money would likely be a big mistake. But since he’s going to be a Bull at a high price for at least 4 more seasons, let’s hope he comes to his senses and decides against playing for GB this summer so that he can rest up and finally live up to some of his potential in a Bulls uniform.

by lexdiamonds0730 on May 26, 2009 3:27 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Because the truth is...

…as much as Luol Deng gets on my last nerve because he doesn’t always compete and he often underachieves, we need this guy to be at his best if the Bulls are to get to the next level. So he’s gotta get healthy and do his duty for the Chicago Bulls.

I wish the guy would lift some weights and get his body stronger.

Maybe then he could deal with the rigors of summer basketball and NBA Basketball. Apparently nobody challenges him over there. I remember reading somewhere how he scores 30 on a regular basis for the GB team. His game is too limited offensively to do that in the NBA at this point, but if he asks Ben Gordon where the weight room is and adds some bulk and a back to the basket game then I see no reason why Deng can’t average 22-24 ppg and grab 8-10 rpg real soon. I’ve never doubted his potential to do it…but I have always and still do question his drive to maximize his potential. The thing is…does he want to be that special player bad enough? The answer to this point has been a resounding no and it’s disappointing.

by lexdiamonds0730 on May 26, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would rather he play

some competitive games as long as his current injury is healed.
You risk injury any game you play (even the ghost that made ‘Melo twist his ankle last night shows that), but the most important thing he needs right now is some timing.
This season’s injury stints really disrupted his timing more than anything. As long as he’s not a minutes hog for the squad I’m all for it. Get some rhythm back without taking a pounding… That way adjusting to Rose’s speed will be an easier transition next year.

by kingj41 on May 26, 2009 9:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Am I the only one who would be somewhat encouraged

by seeing him healthy enough to play in the first place?

As long as it’s not games interfering with a rehab schedule, I can’t get too worked up. The NBA made a deal with FIBA to encourage this crap, that ship has sailed.

Also it’d be nice to see a reminder of good Luol Deng before I’m drowning into full preseason melancholy over the team.

True...

While I don’t want to see Luol injur himself again, I would love to see the guy dominate international competition. Luol playing well and being healthy is good for us in one of two ways. Either he looks like a much better trade piece than that guy who sat out last season or he is going to come back and help the Bulls be a better team next year.

Although I suppose him coming out and sucking majorly or getting hurt would be the potential downsides.

by DRose01 on May 26, 2009 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't we try that last year?

I remember saying multiple times last summer that I thought it would be good for Deng to be the top guy on a team, be the leader, etc etc but nothing materialized from it. He showed up as the same old Deng. The competition and teammates he has there are just not that good. Iron sharpens iron. Fooling around in a lesser league doesn’t seem to help him. With that philosophy you’d assume Tyrus would benefit from a stint with the d-league. Not really. We did this song and dance last year and Deng did not add any alpha player traits from playing summer ball. I’d prefer he spend time improving on some offensive skills in the gym, but that is likely too much to ask unless the Queen gives him leave or something.

I thought Jerry was grooming his guys for loyalty-points so when

contract time comes they’ll take one for the team. I am sure Rose will know that what matters is Jerry winning and he will give us a home town discount to observe the luxury tax and profit margin. If it doesn’t work out Jerry would have tried everything he could.

dominate international competition with GB a reminder or encouraging?

it’s like seeing Viktor Krappy playing with a team of high school players..

It only serves to help Deng image himself as a legend in his own mind and present as a resume to the Bulls organization to justify 72 million. Now, no one is fooled, so he plays now only for his own self-esteem to finally be the “man” on the team.

As far as timing and rhythm goes, as soon as the NBA season starts and physical ball with bumps resumes, can’t find his place in the offense ,skinny ankles turn, etc, etc and timing and rhythm goes out the door for Luol Deng.

Wing players

Have the ability to move, catch and shoot.

Deng showed he could catch, dribble a little and then shoot over a smaller non physical defender.

Are you overrating? Deng’s ability in a “real offense”?

If anything he’s shown he’s a spot up shooter within the 3pt line..
