The Chicago Bulls are reportedly heavily shopping Tyrus Thomas around the league, trying to see what kind of value they can get for him after the solid season he’s coming off of. It appears that they don’t see him fitting into their long-term plans as he’s too similar to Joakim Noah, and they aren’t interested in giving him a long-term deal that would put them over the luxury tax. It’s possible the Bulls look to package Thomas and Hinrich together and land a big time power forward.

If we package him for a “big time power forward.”

Bah, it was inevitable
It’ll be nice to see him get a change of scenery and flourish while the Bulls get a star in return, but I have serious doubts that will ever happen.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

I can't believe he didn't have a more impressive season
with Rose running the point. Every time Rose got the ball, TT should have been in an all-out sprint to the rim, and we just didn’t see that as much as anticipated. I hate to say Skiles was right, but there probably was something to what he was saying.

all-out sprint to the rim? You do realize they usually play against a defense?

Yes. Thank you for pointing out the obvious.
You get the N.S. Sherlock award of the day.
Now allow me to point out the obvious, since you’re picking nits today. The point still stands that he should have sprinted out on fast breaks and sharp cuts to the basket in the half-court more often. Yes, even when the Bulls are actually playing another team and not just doing drills.

in his defense too, i'd see them miss lobs to him
also, it would help if we had a real offense. stand around and watch one person make a play is exactly why luol is suffering also.
both these guys need more direction than our current scheme.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
It would help more
If Tyrus stayed around the rim more….last year Tyrus wanted to focus mostly on his jump shot. THat is a nice to have, but with his explosiveness, Tyrus should stay around the rim first and use the jump shot second.
I think in many ways while we see the strides in Tyrus, I think Tyrus ultimately wants to do what Tyrus wants to do….and that caused him staying away from the rim more than anything (hell Skiles used to always complain about Tyrus’s positioning).
And I’m sorry, but Luol just needs to step it up. We didn’t pay him big bucks so we can candy ass his game into Rose’s game…..Deng appeared to be the ultimate system player (can play any system) and yet was not playing well at all last year and surprising everyone because of it.
I liked the Luol we saw in early Jan in between the injuries. I think he’ll soon learn to play with Rose, because perhaps if he wasn’t hurt, he really would have been a vital piece for us in those playoffs.

luol definitely was finally finding a groove
before he broke his leg.
we still need a damn system. i thought ty had been getting himself under control more lately. at the beginning of the season we see him try to take it to big baby and getting totally out of control. toward the end of the season, we see him trying to skirt off avoiding the charge call. he’s learning.
but we need a real big man coach!!! i don’t understand why the bulls do not understand this.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
Agree on that point
I really don’t get why we draft perhaps the most athletic player of the last 3 years, a tweening 3 and 4 but put him in the 4 spot and then NOT COACH HIM to best use his talents in that spot.
Why no big man coach? It’s crazy.
4/30/2009 GAME 6: Joakim Noah is God.
Thomas inbounds the ball on made baskets and the Bulls run pick-and-pop, not pick-and-roll.
That’s why Brad Miller was so valuable to this team. Thomas was intentionally placed at the free throw line. And before you say, “Noah did it all the time” Noah took less than five FGA per game and I’d bet that a full one of those was on tip-ins off of ORB.
The Bulls offense was not designed to have the PF “sprint to the rim”. It’s designed to hit catch the ball on the free throw line and then shoot or create on their own.
Picking nits? Yes. Being accurate? Yes.

The lane was there though
It was there with Noah and Miller to come of the high screen and then move to catch at the fre throw line. They don’t have the athleticism of Tyrus so they mostly passed out or Miller would take the shot.
When Tyrus sets that screen he should roll to the rim on every screen. If he was instructed to always roll out for the pop shot then that’s awful coaching.
12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

And keep in mind...
…Tyrus Thomas had the 17th most dunks in the entire NBA.
This, despite:
Every SINGLE player ahead of him played more mpg than him.
Being in offense not designed to get him to the rim.
Being in a NEW offensive system.
Having a rookie PG.
Could Thomas have been better? In more ways than one. Is what you suggested, even recognizing the hyperbole, all that feasible or would it have made that huge of a difference? Probably not.

Yes, the offense should have been
designed to get him the ball for easy scores. Since this was one of the glaring defects of the pre-VDN era, and since VDN was a rookie coach with a rookie PG, you’d think he would have built into his new offense more easy buckets. By utilizing TT as I’ve suggested. And VDN should have also played him more.
TT also should not have taken so many jumpers.
Thus the conclusion that he would have had even more dunks/layups. Which gets back to my original point, I’m surprised he didn’t have a more impressive season.

In TT's defense (partially), he often inbounds the ball to Rose
while everyone else runs down court. So while Rose brings the ball upcourt, TT jogs beside him and then takes his place in the offense. Sort of like Rodman.
I'm on the fence with Tyrus more than any other Bull
He’s clearly not the ideal fit next to Noah offensively or defensively, and his zero conscience makes me skeptical of playing him late in games.
But considering his age, he was probably one of the 10 most valuable players in the NBA this year 22-years old or younger. I have him ranked 11th in statistical APM and 8th when weighing it by minutes played (Rondo, Bynum, Durant, Lopez, Sessions, Horford, Biedrins).
I’d love Bosh or Amare, but besides them I don’t think there’s an available player who gives us more value than Tyrus over the next 7-8 seasons.
Umm... how does signing Thomas to a long-term extension put them into the luxury tax?
false info! false info! dammit

That's the part that annoyed me most.
Tyrus’s contract situation makes it him necessary to shop. If Noah had been drafted a year before Tyrus, Noah would probably have to be the player getting traded. The cap hold next summer is a biggest issue in my mind.
I would love to give him one more year
I didn’t think he could have a break out year because of the fact he had a new coach with a new system. Next year the defense will not play off him as much and will challenge his jump shots from the corner, hopefully the lob will then come into place. He’s gotten better every year since we’ve drafted him so let’s hope he continues to do so.
me too, I'd love to see Tyrus in Bull's uniform for one more year
unless we can use him to get a really BIG time PF, which I don’t think will happen this summer.
He was coming along nicely about a week or two before the trade where he was consistently getting double-doubles, but then Brad come and suddenly his play time fluctuated. Besides, he was playing under a incompetent rookie coach with a rookie pg.
He deserves another year to prove his worth on the team
"...Lies, damned lies, and statistics."
I'll see this as positive as soon as I hear a rumor in Toronto about Bosh wanting a trade
"Remember, I'm Italian".

So Tyrus is not the kind of player the Bulls would go into the luxury tax for?
What kind of player is Paxdorf waiting for? Bosh?
Oh, and does that mean Aldridge can now safely be considered the better player since the Blazers most certainly will extend him long-term this fall or next summer at the latest and pay tax for that :)
The article is wrong.
The Bulls wouldn’t have to go into the luxury tax to sign him. Any extension would not start until the 2010-11 season.
