2009 NBA Lottery Thread [Updated with KC already fanning the flames]
[From the FanPosts. I actually just missed it live this year, thanks to my little sister deciding today was a good day to go into labor. (What was she thinking?) But it actually worked out well, since there's only a couple of minutes worth watching anyway. And now draft/trade chatter can begin in absolute seriousness. Clips have an awful lot of big men all of a sudden - too bad I'm not thrilled about any of them being a Bull. -wjb.]
The NBA draft lottery on Tuesday evening produced the following results:
1. Los Angeles Clippers
2. Memphis Grizzlies
3. Oklahoma City Thunder
4. Sacramento Kings
5. Washington Wizards
6. Minnesota Timberwolves
7. Golden State Warriors
8. New York Knicks
9. Toronto Raptors
10. Milwaukee Bucks
11. New Jersey Nets
12. Charlotte Bobcats
13. Indiana Pacers
14. Phoenix Suns
Camby has only one year remaining on a contract that will pay him 7.65 million next season. The Clippers' reportedly have shown interest in Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich in the past. That straight-up trade works under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

It's really
gotta be depressing being a Kings fan right now.
Really happy the Wiz and Knicks aren’t top 2.

The previous envelopes, I was actually hoping not to see the team in that slot,
just for the drama of someone moving way up – then the Knicks’ slot came up and I was suddenly crossing my fingers to see the Knicks’ logo come out of that envelope.
And when Washington came up out of order, I actually did a ridiculous little dance. Good thing no one was here to see me. ;)

I'll start the list.
1. Not just me-first offense, but me-only offense, including times when he just decides he’s going to shoot a 3. He’s an efficient scorer, but he’s a black hole for any type of team flow. He makes Salmons look like John Stockton in comparison.
2. Absolutely, positively no defense. None. It’s a combination of not knowing what to do and not even thinking to try. Utter lack of focus on that end.
3. Ginormous contract.
Those are the big ones (at least for me). Honestly, if you can, watch him in an entire Clips game from last year and count the number of times you want to throttle him. You’ll run out of fingers.
Sort of like BG if we signed him to the contract he wants
That would make two black holes on the same team.
Score: opponents-143, Bulls-125. Bulls score but lose.
Unfair to Ben.
Gordon might do it for some possessions, but Randolph does it on nearly every possession.
Also
Ben ain’t a distraction off the court or in the locker room.
Also correct me if I’m wrong, but Ben’s lead his team past the first round as their best player
4/30/2009 GAME 6: Joakim Noah is God.
Ben Gordon has redeeming qualities other than offense.
Work ethic, for one.
Conditioning.
Coachability.
Good locker room presence.
He tries on defense. No one will accuse him of actually being a good defender, but the effort is there.
All of these are traits that translate into wins. Whereas other than offense and offensive efficiency, the overall trend of Randolph’s traits translate into morale-strangling losses.

Spot on.
We should target Camby for Hinrich and maybe try to swing Camby’s deal (soon to be expiring) to the Suns for Amare.
That, to me, would be the ideal way to get things done. The only question is whether the Clips would bite on such a deal. I think they’d be crazy not to, because they need defense desperately. Eric Gordon is a fantastic young scorer, but he’s not a defender yet and in those moments when Baron’s disinterested on D or EG’s shot isn’t falling or just anytime the Clips need to protect a lead (don’t laugh!), throwing Hinrich out there would be a huge boon for them. Plus, Hinrich would potentially make BDiddy expendable if he starts to have another year like he did last year, in which he was really bad. Someone would be interested in Baron and probably believe that they could rehabilitate him someone like the Mike D’Antoni Knicks, perhaps?
Anyway, the point is they have a frontcourt glut now and they could use depth in the backcourt. Hinrich would provide that, and his contract de-escalates and is pretty reasonable.

I'll take the liberty of continuing arjoseph's littany of bad traits of Mr. Randolph:
4. Overweight
5. Off-court issues with the law. Not like dead-beat dad / paternity stuff. More like altercations at night clubs type stuff. When he’s injured and supposedly on bereavement leave. And also DUI-type stuff.
5a. This includes a posse that never fails to make its presence known, according to various reports.
6. His recent fight record indicates he can be a surly fellow.
7. All of which adds up to cancer in the locker room
8. And horrible influence on rookies who are brimming with potential, and who should be given the benefit of the doubt in terms of their own character, and the opportunity to be in a good situation.
9. Really, it’s almost as if you said, “give me the poster boy for the Jailblazer era in Portland”, and by that I mean, talented player who can score efficiently but who represents trouble in almost every way other than his scoring". And I would give you Zach Randolph.

As a Blazer fan in that era, I disagree with this. The Jailblazer teams of 2000-2001 were excellent defensively.
Fearthesword.com: "There is no doubt that the long layoff, combined with the ease of the first two rounds had the Cavaliers a bit tired in the 4th quarter."
Seriously, I had no idea...
What with the likes of Sabonis and Zach Randolph, I am surprised to hear this. But if the statistics bear this out, then I wouldn’t dispute statistics. (Um… do they?)
Pip was an all-world defender, but on the tail end of his career, Steve Smith’s knees were not the best, Sabonis and Randolph were on the larger / immobile side, D. Stoudamire is on the short side.
By my recollection that leaves the likes of Bonzi, Rasheed, Ryder (and perhaps Jim Jackson? For a couple of years, anyway). All of them were athletic, but altogether not enough for a defensive juggernaut. Who knows, maybe they all tried really hard, and employed really good defensive schemes…
"It’d be ridiculous to hate someone for simply what they say in a sports blog. But I greatly dislike every syllable of your angst-filled, smarmy, nondescript, half-assed, elitist-garbage responses." –Rogerspark Kris
it is also important to remember that Randolph didn't come in to the league
until 2001. And didn’t play all that much his rookie season.
So yes, the 2000-01 Blazers were a good defensive team. Pippen, Jim Jackson (who had become a defensive player by then) and Rasheed were all very good defensively. Bonzi was pretty good too. JR Ryder was a non issue. But they didn’t actually have Zach Randolph, so the argument is moot.

In my mind they were the Jailblazers
until they got rid of Randolph. He’s lived his life in basketball as though carrying the torch for those great Jailblazer teams, no matter where he ends up.

I wouldn't.
That’s just exchanging contracts and one logjam for another. He’s not better than Miller nor Noah nor Hinrich, and his contracts way worse. That’s a bad trade.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
And his health scares me
Big men plus bad feet usually isn’t a good thing. Didn’t he miss way more time than he was supposed to last year?
At this point, I prefer Noah for his defense and solid rebounding.
This is the big one.
I’d rather have a glut of big men than a glut of guards, but there’s absolutely no guarantee he’ll play, which makes his contract an even worse deal.
Someone who we hopefully won't be paying for after a year or two.
Which is why Miller is tolerable.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
A solidly efficent scorer that's average at best on defense,
and whose passing ability usually makes his team better. Kaman’s career high PER is lower than Miller’s career average.
...the most attractive expiring contract in the league next year...
Miller’s contract is extremely valuable in trades going into next year. I believe the biggest expiring contract going into 2010—-therefore a hot commodity come February; or something the Bulls treasure if they are making a big FA play.
I'd rather have a logjam in the middle than in the back court.
If it’s a trade for just Hinrich I would do it in a heartbeat. People can stop dreaming that we could do better for Hinrich.
This wouldn’t hurt us from making another move because we still would have expiring contracts, young prospects, and draft picks.
"I guess I can’t do anything if you’re just irrational, but to point it out and move on."
- fundamentallysound
Hinrich for Kaman is a crap move.
He’s an average player w/ a contract as big as Deng’s. W/ Noah’s performance this past playoffs as a second year player, and with a young PG, I’d think Noah would have earned himself at least a year or two of “development starting.” Paying $12 million for a good backup C for a year and a half is one thing. Paying two of them for a year and one for another two years on top of that is stupid.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
I don't agree that Noah has earned anything.
But it doesn’t make sense to trade for another high priced big man who is not an upgrade to play alongside/behind Noah.
Am I missing something? Where is this logjam in the backcourt? Rose, Hinrich, Salmons…that is a rotation, not a logjam.
" I've looked at these numbers and decided the #1 problem
is that Ben Gordon is selfish..." -your friendly bulls blogger
a possible re-signing of BG completes the logjam
you can’t have all of those guys playing heavy minutes.
http://awsomepeoplesearch.com/
You're right. I assumed Gordon coming back. My mistake.
On the other hand, you’re wrong about Noah. He’s an above-average C and arguably the most consistent starter for the Bulls in the entire playoffs, upping his positive stats while lowering his negative ones. He’s just turned 24 and just finished his second season.
Sure, you can say he needs to come back in shape for next year and the cliched “no spots are safe”, blah blah blah, but that’s true for any player.
So you can certainly disagree, but you would be wrong.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
I agree with your assessment of Noah.
I just don’t agree that he has earned a starting spot because of it…I don’t consider him to be untouchable, untradeable or in any way guaranteed to be on the team next season. I don’t think Chris Kaman is an upgrade, but if there were one availble, I would make the move.
" I've looked at these numbers and decided the #1 problem
is that Ben Gordon is selfish..." -your friendly bulls blogger
Um... sure. I don't think he's untouchable either.
He is second on my list, though, behind Rose behind players I want to keep. If your definition of “earned a starting spot” = “untradeable”, then LeBron James is the only player that’s earned that. I’d trade any single player in the NBA for him.
Just, barring the acquisition of a Top-10 C, Noah should be the Bulls’ starter next year. To me, if you can say that, that’s “earning a starter spot”.
No worries. We just think of it differently.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
Kaman's not even average. Honestly, he's bad. I don't know who was able to weave
the tale that Chris Kaman is an effective basketball player, but more NBA players should hire that guy. Kaman stinks.

Yeah you would think like that
Big men have different pay rates in the NBA. So having a contract like Deng’s is not bad for a 7 footer who can play when healthy. We can stay medicore trying to develop a player for 2 years or get a player who is developed.
I don’t get it you’d rather pay 10 mil a year for a backup PG and not pay 12 mil a year for a starting Center?
"I guess I can’t do anything if you’re just irrational, but to point it out and move on."
- fundamentallysound
He's not a starting C.

I'm with you Tyger.
I start Noah over Kaman any day. And we don’t need Kaman when we already have Miller. Let’s get Blair in the draft and we’re good.
Kamans not a starting C
lol. He’s a starter just as much as Noah is . And I’d rather have Noah but getting Kaman for Hinrich is not a bad move. Kaman is a 7 footer and you can move him again in a bigger trade by the trading deadline and we get to keep Tryus if we trade for let’s say Bosh or Amare.

The league is not filled with
Hakeems and Ewings or Dwight’s and Shaqs. So who are you compairing Kaman to that he sucks next to any other center?
That’s what you can always say that when we talk “that’s your opinion but it doesn’t make you right”, that’s fine but read what I’m actually saying then give yours.
In the stats above Kaman had better PPG and DRB so how does he “suck”? Not the best player in the world but if you read Sam Smiths article placing him with Noah for the future while only trading Hinrich which is a backup for us wouldn’t be a bad thing. I understand if it was a trade for draft picks, Tyrus, or even Noah but it’s for a player which duplicates a position.

You've been here long enough...
…one would think you’d know that PPG and RPG hardly make a player great.
And still, he averaged 12.2 PPG and 9.5 RPG while playing
#He shoots an okay percentage, but it’s hardly anything great and it’s maddeningly inconsistent from year to year.
#He passes less than Zach Randolf yet turns the ball over far more.
#He can’t shoot a jump shot (so he doesn’t offer something Noah doesn’t).
#He’s averaged 60 games per year over the past four years.
#He has a horrible contract. Shedding Hinrich is about getting better talent and/or creating financial flexibility, not re-arranging the deck chairs.
#And finally, to his numbers that you misuse, over the past four years (giving him, and you, the benefit of the doubt) he averaged 12.2 PPG and 9.5 RPG while playing > 32 mpg. At the same playing time, Noah would get 9.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG. So he gets 2.7 PPG more? He needs 3 more shots a game to do it (9.84 per 32 compared to 6.86 for Noah per 32).
Centers that are better than Kaman:
Dwight Howard
Yao
Shaq
Al Jefferson
Noah
Marcus Camby
Nene
Gasol/Bynum
Ilgauskas
Tim Duncan
Kendrick Perkins
Brad Miller
Mehmet Okur
Andris Biedrins
Emeko Okafor
Brook Lopez
Al Horford
Marc Gasol
Greg Oden?
Joel Przybilla
Meh, I’m done. That’s 21, give or take or your probable gripes with this player or that. A year ago, Kaman had a little above-average year (but still not as good as the career averages of half the guys above), and he was 25. There was some mild reason to think that he could be a productive player. However, this year,he reverted back to his career norms while being hurt yet again. If all you want are PPG, and you don’t care that it takes away shots from those that are better at scoring than him, fine. You can have him. But that’s a poor understanding of what makes a successful basketball team.
Kaman sucks.

Okay, so what can OKC give up to get to No. 1?
If I’m the Clippers, I’ll listen, but it’s going to cost.
Does everyone realize how ridiculously athletic a team that has Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan is? And that Gordon and Jordan did pretty admirably for 20-year-old rookies? Holy crap.
Anywhooo…
OKC: Jeff Green and this year’s pick for #1. Clippers could put an improving Jeff Green at SF or PF and draft Rubio, Jennings or Jordan Hill.
Nah, OKC should just take James Harden and hope they get Cole Aldrich next year.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
For Blake Griffin? Sorry, dude, I don't buy that you have inside info.
Green has two years and is still a very mediocre player. Griffin’s potential is way higher.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
Not for Blake
I’m just saying I don’t see the Thunder trading Green and the number 1 pick for Blake when they already have the 3rd pick
The Thunder would rather have the combination of Thabeet (or whoever) and Green than Griffin?
That seems unlikely.
I totally disagree.
I think Thabeet is going to be a bust and servicable at best. And Green has shown a few flashes, but he’s overrated IMO. Now Blake is the real deal and him and KD would be NICE.
I believe Griffin will be solid but no all star
I never believed the hype surrounding him this past year. He just dominated a really weak college class if you ask me.
No basis for this...
Look at Tim Duncan’s college stats his senior year. His stats are comparable to Griffin’s…Griffin’s are arguably better and Griffin is only a sophomore! Duncan’s draft class was pretty weak too…Billups, Keith Van Horn, T-Mac and that’s all!
While they are different types of players certainly…Tim Duncan dominated a weak class and he turned out pretty well I’d say.
Good points
I can’t argue with you stats wise, it’s just a feeling I have had based on what I’ve seen throughout the year.
But I will say this though, if you wanna bring in college stats, there are a lot of people who have come out of college with better number than Duncan.
Bogut was one of them as well.
True
If Griffin turned out to be Bogut, that would be disappointing, but even if he only ends up half way in between, that would be great for any team
Meh, Bogut played in the Mountain West Conference
Duncan played in the ACC and Griffin played in the Big 12.
Griffin doesn’t have the post skills, neither high nor low, to compare to Tim Duncan. He’s more power and explosive in his moves though. His real factor is rebounding and incredible athleticism around the rim.
Griffin can be better than Tim Duncan if he ever gets to play with a cast of characters that Tim has played with.

Wow Tyger
I’m agreeing with you 110% again, I seem to always get killed elsewhere for saying Jeff Green was a horrible pick in the Ray Allen trade……I mean 3 years from now maybe he’s something, but I see mediocrity in his future, kind of a younger Marvin Williams, and he’s got a ways to go to get to Marvin Williams spot.
Why they traded Ray Allen for pennies is beyond me. I mean I agree with the cap clearing rebuild idea, but they could have had so much more than what they got.
4/30/2009 GAME 6: Joakim Noah is God.
I didn't like the pick either, but I think they envisioned him as the ultimate role player....
…next to Durant. And looking back, really, the only pick that would have been better close to him is Joakim Noah (w/ Yi, Brewer, Wright being the 3 in between), and I’m glad they didn’t take him.

Oh I agree there
But I still wouldn’t trade Ray Allen for just Joakim Noah……..
4/30/2009 GAME 6: Joakim Noah is God.
I would in a heartbeat.
He’s cheaper and younger than Allen on an extremely young team. 3 years from now, he’ll be a better C than Allen will be a SG.
If I were the Thunder and still had Ray Allen, I would most definitely try to offer the Bulls Ray Allen for Joakim Noah. No if’s, and’s or but’s about that for me.

They play better that way
And you can also make an argument that KD could easily play the 4 with his height. I mean you can pretty much play KD anywhere, it seems.
you actually can't play KD anywhere. Playing him at the 2 guard is what got P.J. Carlesimo fired.
It was a big reason why the Thunder started out 1-12 under Peej. KD is not a SG, you can play him at the SF or PF, but ideally you want him at SF because that’s where he fits best.

Three things you must know:
-"Ben Gordon is a bundle of muscle and clutch. That's all he's made of. Drink BG7 energy drink, you'll grow a pair of balls on your balls."
-Pau Gasol: The defense of a seven foot ladder paired with the post presence of Manute Bol.
-Joakim Noah is better than you.
Other way around
No way LAC trades Griffin for just Green and a pick. It would have to take more than that.

The #1 overall pick has only been traded once in the lottery era.
That was Orlando trading with GSW for three first round picks…I doubt the Clips trade the pick…But Jeff Green, this year’s pick and their 2011 pick would be a pretty good offer…If Blake Griffin worth that much?

I was thinking that too.
Make next year’s Top-5 protected or something.
But then that’s when I thought that OKC could just take another lanky, underdeveloped C (or James Harden), give Green another year to develop (because, you know, players only get three years otherwise they’re busts) and hope they luck into Cole Aldrich (who’d be awesome in-between Durant and Thabeet), Derrick Favors or improved Brackins, Monroe, Patterson, etc.
A lineup of Westbrook, _(not Thabo)_, Durant, Aldrich and Thabeet would be quite intriguing in 3 or 4 years.

Analysis: I think the Bulls will do backflips if Blair falls this far. They have the athleticism of Tyrus Thomas, the energy of Joakim Noah and the skills and size of Brad Miller on their front line. If they could add Blair’s toughness and offensive rebounding, the Bulls would have an answer to every front line in the league.

Griffin should hold out and refuse to play for the clips
honestly, the worst sports organization the past 20 years outside of maybe the Raiders. They already have Kaman (overpaid), Camby (old), and Randolph (the worst person griffin should learn from/be around) in a crowded frontcourt. i feel bad for him

Loved his post lotto interview
Something about trying to make the best out of whatever situation he’s in. I don’t remember exactly how he phrased it, but I definitely got the impression that he’s less than thrilled. Or maybe he was just trying to be humble and not assume he’s going #1…
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
Umm no on the Raiders
While its trendy to pick on the Raiders they have made numerous playoff appearances and appeared in a Super Bowl in the last 20 years. They aren’t even the worst franchise in their own sport (hello Detroit Lions). What about the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball. 16 straight years with a losing record!!!
Its trendy to hate Raiders but they are far from the worst franchise in sports.

Ahh ok
Most everyone felt he was the number one pick in that draft. Of all the moves you could have criticized that was the worst. One full season under his belt and finished strong. Give the kid some time to grow. If you are looking for ammo to hate on look at this years draft. Still not the worst franchise in their own sport much less all of sports. Al wants to win… can the same be said about Sterling, Ford, or Pohlard. He has 3 trophys to prove it.

A few thoughts...
I was pretty pissed when they took DHB. If he was the better receiver they surely could have moved down and got additional picks. It was a crappy pick as was their second round selection they could have gotten in the 3rd round or later. Even if this turns out to be a simulation of Bowie/Jordan no one ever accused Portland of being the worst franchise in professional sports. Also Jordan and Bowie did not play the same position.
The Raider franchise is no doubt in a slump and have been a bottom feeder for the last 5 years. Honestly compare the win losses vrs league average with the Bulls since 99 and you will be shocked which franchise has performed better. The Raiders have been to the big show in that time. The Bulls have gotten out of the first round once. The Raiders have had a league MVP in that time… the Bulls no all stars.
I am a fan of both franchises. Both have had their slumps. The Raiders are trendy to hate on as they were between the AFC championship game in 91 (also within the 20 year period the poster indicated) until Gruden arrived. The stubbornness of Al can cause some problems.
Again I suggest you check out the Pittsburgh Pirates(16 straight soon to be 17 straight seasons with a losing record), the Detroit Lions (0-16 last year) and they KC Royals.

They both have the same problem.
Owners that don’t know what there are doing trying to be WAY too involved in every decision.
Yeah they are bad now
But they weren’t in the early 2000s, or the late 80s and early 90s.
The Lions weren’t terrible in the 90s either, but they never sniffed the Superbowl.
Yeah, I think it's more of the fall from grace. It was so sudden and pronounced.

Random thoughts
1) The obvious : Clippers already with a loaded front court. Perhaps Camby can be had for cheap?
2) Top 4 picks are all Western Conference teams : Great stuff . No real threat to Chicago
3) I don’t buy Rubio as a good fit for the Thunder : Westbrook was great as a rookie PG.
4) The Kings really are screwed.
5) Washington could still hit the jackpot : In my opinion, draft Jennings.
6) The Wolves are always picking 5, 6 or 7
7) I like Golden State picking Curry and fucking NY’s draft completely
8) Toronto and Phoenix both have average picks if you ask me : Wanna trade?!
For the Bulls, Camby = continuing a crappy trend
Camby is too similar to Noah—defense and rebounding are his strengths, offense is not.
There’s seriously a trend here, and it’s not good:
We trade for Tyson Chandler, a defender/rebounder/shotblocker who fails to develop on offense.
We trade him away because we lure Ben Wallace, another defender/rebounder/shotblocker who brings no offensive skill.
He craps out on us, so we trade him away, eventually giving his minutes to Noah, a defender/rebounder/shotblocker with almost no offensive skill other than dunks and putbacks.
And now we’re looking at renting Marcus Camby for one year, an older version of Chandler/Noah?? How does that make sense?
"It’d be ridiculous to hate someone for simply what they say in a sports blog. But I greatly dislike every syllable of your angst-filled, smarmy, nondescript, half-assed, elitist-garbage responses." –Rogerspark Kris
For one:
Camby’s enormous expiring contract. If the Bulls can clear considerable future money in the trade (like ahem Kirk), that’s a pretty good reason. I’m not saying it justifies it completely (I happen to think Camby is much better than any of the other guys we’ve paraded through, and he actually has a pretty good spot-up jumper akin to Tyrus’). But it is a factor.
Yeah, that's kind of the only reason that I could find as well
But I guess the question is, what other potential deals are the Bulls leaving on the table if they trade Hinrich for one year’s worth of Camby plus salary cap relief? Wouldn’t the Bulls be using that cap space to go after the same bigs they’d be pursuing in a trade with Hinrich right now?
It’s hard to say. It’s also a matter of how hopeful willing other teams (Raptors, Suns, etc.) are…

Would the Clips want Kirk, though?
They have Baron Davis already on a huge contact. I don’t think they could afford another PG at starter’s salary…. and with Gordon there is no need to have a PG slide over to SG minutes.
"Remember, I'm Italian".
Yeah, I'm not sure Kirk is the best deal for them.
Although beyond Baron and Gordon, they really don’t have much quality depth at all.
2 reasons
1) Like arjoseph stated, If the Bulls can get rid of Hinrich’s large contract for another huge expiring in 2010, that should be enough incentive right there.
2) Unlike Noah, if you trap Rose on a Camby/Rose screen and roll, Camby can make you pay. He’s got a good jump shot. high arching as fuck but pretty consistent.
Yeah but you know what?
We were a Marcus Camby or Antonio McDyess from making it to the second round this year. Once VDN sat Tyrus and brought in Miller, you saw teams exploit us in the paint the rest of the season. Imaginge if we could’ve went to Camby/Tyrus or Camby/Noah down the stretch with the lead in game 2 or 5. Different story.
We were one Antonio McDyess away, I agree.
I just think it’s a very different thing to say we were one Marcus Camby away. They don’t seem like the same thing to me.
McDyess is well-rounded scorer who does everything pretty well.
Marcus Camby has hung his hat and established his reputation on defense, rebounding and blocks—not scoring.

Initial reaction:
Wolves are in a spot to be a good trade partner for Kirk, especially if it’s true that they were after him at the trade deadline. So would a package of Kirk and the #16 for, say, Mike Miller and the #6 work?
If so, I think Blair would be a perfect compliment to our bigs, so I think he’s worth the #6 and might not be around at #16. Bulls draft Blair there and then, say, Collison at #26 to be the backup point, which he seems to be a perfect fit for. Resign BG at around 9 mil/year, and than we have a great lineup and are also geared to pull of a midseason trade for Bosh if the Raps still suck next year and/or he’s poised to bolt. We could offer TT and BG and a take-your-pick of expirings from Tim Thomas, Jerome James, or either of the Millers.
rose/collison/nelson
bg/m miller/roberson
deng/salmons
TT/blair/tim thomas
noah/b miller/james
And if TT does real well next year and the Bulls are clicking, well, than no need for a trade and we have all of those expirings after the year to either re-up TT and/or go after a free agent out right.
Just my initial reaction…
Isn't Miller their only viable wing option?
I don’t see why they’d create another hole while filling another for 3 years. The prize is the No. 6 pick. Take a bad contract/worthless player (like Brian Cardinal and change) and run w/ that jump of ten spots in the draft.
I’d consider Cardinal + Gomes* + #6 for Hinrich + #16 a damn good trade.
*or Craig Smith or Mark Madsen or Rodney Carney. Whatever.

Just out of curiosity, who would you chose with the #6 pick?
I love Blair, but I think #6 is too high. Maybe we could use the 6 pick in a package for Bosh or A’mare. I don’t know, I think everybody in the 3-12 spots on the ESPN draft board are all question marks, very hit or miss.
Yeah, actually, I don't know.
I’d do what you said, use it in a package (Toronto with #6 and #9 would be pretty excited, I’d think), or maybe trade the #6 with next year’s pick to move up another couple of spots. And try to get harden? Or trade #4 and what-not for… I don’t know. I didn’t think about the actual player available when I said that.
If I couldn’t use it to trade, I’d probably just take Henderson, assuming he measures out at a “legit” 6’4"+ and good athletic attributes and be assured that I get the guy I wanted. Just as the players are all hit-or-miss, where they go probably is, too.

i disagree about Harden
I watched him play a ton. He has some similarities to Roy, but Roy can play the point, and did so at times in college – Harden cannot. Harden was at his best when he got the ball in an attack position and could score or make a play. The only reason he handled the ball so much was because he was playing with very little talent at ASU. I think Harden would be a good fit next to Rose, if he improved his 3pt shooting.

How many times will the Grizzlies get screwed?
Griffin would be perfect for them. A lineup of Conley, Mayo, Gay, Griffin, and Gasol probably gives up 120 points a game, but damn it’d be so much fun to watch.
Clippers will draft Griffin, play him 10 minutes a game, and he will be a Laker by 2015.
Oh, and this is a horrible time to be a Kings fan, terrible luck (though kind of fitting when you have Chris Webber as your representative).

im not so sure theyre screwed
you have now a pg that can be a star in rubio to go alongside mayo whos a pure scorer
i think they could have a killer backcourt. now all they have to do is undo the trade with the lakers from last year….
They're drafting Thabeet
I’m pretty sure
Chad Ford confirmed it but I heard stories the past two days about them loving being either 1 or two cause they get a big man
An NBA source told me today that Memphis was the one team that might take Thabeet instead of Griffin if it were to get the No. 1 pick — that’s how much the Grizzlies need size. So it seems likely they would take Thabeet ahead of Rubio. Marc Gasol was good last year, but he’s more of an offensive player than a defensive player.
But Rubio remains an option here, and he might be a better long-term fit than Thabeet.
MEW.
Still a lottery team. And I don’t really see that team developing into anything great down the line either.
I could see Chris Wallace doing that
Haven’t seen enough of Thabeet to call him the bust so many others are, but Rubio impressed me so much in Beijing, I don’t know if it’s possible to pass him up, even with Conley on the team.

i never believe those insiders
half the time theyre right half the time theyre js tryign to make a story. thabeet looks like a bust to me. he looks like oden but even worse. read the last line. rubio imo is the better long time fit. its easier to find big men than it is to find pure pgs in the league today. and memphis has one of hte biggest budgets in the league to spend on big men
Cause Deron Williams and Chris Paul have already won something?
I can’t agree with you.
I don’t think Rubio is a sure superstar. I think he’ll be very good but when you already have someone like Conley and NO ONE to help Gasol out, I think it’s a no brainer.
im sold on oj mayo being the star and future of that team
all he needs is a solid pg. he doesnt need superstar pg. i think they can find a big man much easier in FA market than they can find a decent pg
So you're saying you don't think Conley could become a solid PG?
And with free agency, comes the idea of the player wanting to play in your city.
Not only does Memphis have to sell the idea of not wanting to spend much for a competitive team, they have to sell the idea of wanting to actually play in Memphis.
They’re better off drafting the player they want and forcing them into playing there . .
FOR CHEAP
Agreed.
No one is going to Memphis as a FA without them ridiculously over paying, and they just can’t even if they wanted to, which they don’t. Plus, they had three PG that lots of people liked, Lowry, Crittendon, and Conley and they thought Conley was their guy. I don’t see them giving up on him so soon when there is a big there to take.
Insiders are just reporting what they know right now.
It’s very possible that sources out of Memphis are saying they want Thabeet, but they haven’t even begun workouts yet. It’s possible they confirm their impression now and go with him or see something (that everyone else does) and change their minds. It doesn’t mean the reporting is “wrong,” just that the underlying stuff is subject to change.
And he's expiring...
so you turn Kirk into a one year player and salary cap relief? I’d rather just trade him to Portland for Blake and a #1, use the $$$ to resign Gordon, and package the picks for D. Blair.
Not big on acquiring Camby.

…but how is Stephen Curry not the best-possible replica for Steve Nash?
Not that athletic, good dribbler, (not as good of a passer but still good), can get his shot off anywhere…
As much praise as Nash gets as a passer and play-maker (and deservedly so), his shooting from 3-pt and ability to hit the open J on the pick-and-rolls are just as huge.

fair enough. Nash did take a long time to become the player he was at his apex
but, I’d say that Nash is the exception more than the rule. The guy worked unbelievably hard at his dribbling to get to where he is as a ball handler. I’m not saying Curry won’t work hard, but it took a combination of extremely hard work by Nash combined with unique creativity with the ball to make him as good as he is. I just wouldn’t bank on Curry ever getting to that level. I can’t speak to Nash’s ball-handling ability coming out of college, but I do know that when I saw Curry in college he was relatively easily trapped by longish defenders and did not have nearly the handles needed to cope with double teams. I think a lot of people are going to be really disappointed with Curry as a pro player. He can shoot, that’s about all he can do.

Nash dribbled tennis balls all around campus at Santa Clara.
SI told me so way back then.
I don’t think I ever said he’ll be some perfect replacement, merely that he’s the “best possible replica for Steve Nash.” I didn’t say “in the draft”, but I would have thought that would have been implied since that’s what I was writing about. I then went on to list some of the things Curry does well and some superficial type reasons why they could be comparable.
Nowhere did I say, “He’s the next Steve Nash.” I just think it will be easier for D’Antoni to work with Stephen Curry than it would be to teach Ricky Rubio how to shoot or Tyreke Evans how to shoot and pass. And the Knicks are right in the area that most people put Curry based on talent so I don’t think it’s all doom-and-gloom for NYK and let’s all laugh hilariously at them because we got Del Negro and D’Antoni got a whole bunch of horrible, horrible players. That is all.

He's about halfway between Nash and Nate Robinson.
Same shooting touch as Robinson but not as explosive, better handling/passing than Robinson but not up to Nash’s level. He’s perfect if they plan to let Robinson walk (which they should).
Anyone else notice how much different most of these mocks are compared to each other?
I mean after the top 3, I’ve seen so many projecting certain players either very high or very low.
Just for example, I believe one had Jrue Holiday going as high as 6th and another having him go as low as 26.
So many players are are floating around the high end/deep end. Blair is one of them as well.
I really am starting to have no idea who is going to en up where
To the Bulls Staff
Please do not pick another PG, leave it the hell alone, we got a starter and backup who can play either guard spot its fine
Please do not pick another big, we have a several and lets concentrate on developing (it means teaching or showing another how to accomplish a task) the young under the basket players we have and defining rolls
Please Oh Please can we draft a couple of wings or at least some size….. maybe a SG over 6ft with maybe a hint of D? How about a SF with some athletic ability not just a 12ft jumper? If we must go for a PF then can he be over 6’9 or 6’10? maybe be able to jump? I just dont want a sean may marcus fizer type who has a ginormous azz and cant get the job done
Prediction of the draft………… Terrance Williams turns into a steal, guy can dribble, drive, rebound, play D, has a above avg jumper, above avg free throw shooter, what else does a team need? He plays D on multiple positions, to me the guy may be a ROY candidate since poor Blake is being flushed into the toilet…. sorry I mean being drafted by Clips

I don't think the east is still weak weak weak
The East beat the West overall on the one to one. I think the West had the most talented team, but I’m starting to wonder if they were the best. THe big 3 in the East certainly trump the big 2 out West overall, injuries down the stretch muted them a bit, but I’d be far more afraid of the Magic than the Nuggets. Yes Dwight Howard is that unstoppable and their shooters will cause matchup nightmares for everyone but LA….and LA probably has issues with Bynum at 50%….
Cleveland should win that series, but it won’t be a route….
The bottom 5 teams in the West were so terrible that it definitely brought the competition down and caused for several West teams to have a better record in numbers than the team was in reality.
THe East probably had 3 of the top 4 teams (definitely 3 of the top 5) and a pretty solid parity in terms of talent through 4-10…..
The West had a huge dropoff after really Utah, though Phx with a healthy Amare I guess would have been as talented, but they weren’t playing the right way for their guys early…and Amare was hurt.
4/30/2009 GAME 6: Joakim Noah is God.
can't deny
the thumping the east put on the west in the regular season. rather than address all points, i would suggest looking at the two team by team.
lebron and dwade can beat anyone by themselves, but not in a series (yet). look at utah (with health and without boozer distractions), dallas, san antonio (with manu healthy), houston (yao). i think all would beat orlando in a series. portland and phoenix (health, just once please?) could, and denver and la definitely would. lakers play like crap and beat teams anyway.
so when it comes to the top, you got mvp-led one-man-team and boston, who with garnett and powe would repeat over la, i think. (i only hope lebron will, and only ’cause i hate la, ’cause “the king” and his ascendancy certainly helps the bulls none).
if you think orlando is so good, you must think the bulls are pretty good themselves. in fact, this is really my point. the bulls, gar paxdorf, and the fans shouldn’t be fooled, even if they get to “magic level” in the east. they need to look long term, build around the kids, stop drawing up stupid contracts for nba-average talent, and pray to basketball gods for 2010 fortune.

I think yesterday's game
Should prove the point, Orlando with those shooters is TOUGH. Turkoglu is healthy again and can play some good, solid PG, at whcih point he’s what everyone hoped Livingston would be (pre injury) a tough cover for matchups. Lewis can be a jump shooting big, but can drive to the paint. And while Dwight Howard is DPOY and all NBA first team, i think he’s still UNDERRATED…..add in a bit of Skip to my Lou and the other shooters and Gortat….Orlando is hardly a bad team….and I wouldn’t think any of those you listed would find the Magic easy.
I mean a healthy Boston would blow away the competition too…..

Orlando's a puzzler
Because they can look bad, but then because they have the biggest matchup issues in the league, they can get really good. No team in the league could ever sweep them….if they play their games, they’re as tough as any. COnsistency’s their problem/issue, not talent.

As well as Orlando does, and have guys who can shoot threes but can also shoot inside and in case of Lewis, drive a bit, and have the most dominant big man in the game today who scarily enough could become even more dominant soon….they aren’t a team to sleep on.

Trading Hinrich would leave the Bulls ridiculously thin in the backcourt.
We would pretty much have Salmons and Rose…unless you believe Anthony Roberson or Demarcus Nelson can contribute…
So, in my opinion, not only does trading Hinrich for one of the Clips spare big men do very little in improving the frontcourt, it significantly hurts the backcourt…
I have if Gar Paxson is trading Hinrich, they are getting a replacement in return.

the idea of trading hinrich is conditioned on resigning Gordon

Okay.
Do you think the owner of the Bulls would be willing to pay luxury tax next season? He has not been willing in the past…Unless we can take about $4M less back in the Hinrich trade or get a non-guaranteed contract (Stackhouse anyone?), then I don’t think Ben Gordon will be re-signed.

I doubt the Chairman will break the luxury tax.

i didn't say Gordon would be resigned
i alluded to the fact that most of the trade proposals regarding Hinrich are conditioned on paying Gordon. That is to say, most of the people seeking to trade Hinrich want to do so to keep Ben Gordon.
And I do believe the team should go into the tax to sign Gordon. The Bulls are not the fucking Memphis Grizzlies. They play in the countries 3rd largest market, they sell out every year, they sell as much merchandise as any team in the league not named the Lakers and Reinsdorf got fat lining his pockets after Jordan retired putting out crummy team after crummy team to crummy team to a sold out United Center. A lot of owners can plead poverty due to the financial situation, Reinsdorf isn’t one of them.

it
does seem that 99% either want to keep kirk ’cause ben is leaving, or use it to re-sign ben. i agree.
what i strongly disagree with is the thinking of the 99%. ben’s and kirk’s merits and value must be considered in pure terms. unfortunately, there is the cap and players have been signed previous to ben (due in part to ben and his agent).
and reinsdorf is rather unlikable. fwiw, d’antoni (although flawed) would’ve had this team playing ungodly well in comparison. and i’m a vinny supporter.

both kirk and ben. go ahead, thin the back court. and yes, replacements are received in return in trade. there are collective bargaining agreement rules in place.
no worries, i promise it’ll be fine! those guys just aren’t all that.

don't care
they’re nba players that take up the minutes and don’t really have much negative effect in comparison. as long as they’re not bad contracts.
it’s true the team (minus ben/kirk) might not make the playoffs next year, but there’s no saying they will as presently constructed anyway. of course, if that should happen, all holy hell would break loose at b-a-b for 6 or 7 months!
the team’s in a great position long term. they just need to resist temptation, resist the dumb move(s).

Agreed
Unless Gordon is re-signed, trading Hinrich is kind of a dumb thing to do. If they can somehow ship him to Portland and get Blake in return, then that’s not a bad idea.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

although
i just dissed kirk, i want more than $avings and cap relief for kirk. because kirk is good (or avg anyway) and blake is not, not really.
if portland is smart, they’ll actually give something up to get nash, who’s truly great at offense and does try hard (draws charges) on defense. i’m sure they’ll still have plenty of youth.

I concur.
I think they could draft Hinrich’s SG replacement as a backup, but adding the frontcourt guy does nothing.

This is what we need to do
The Bulls should simply let BG walk (or resign him if he actually agrees to being a 6th man and playing for around 6 to 7 mil a year) and keep Hinrich. Hinrich, while expensive, gives us a viable guard who can play the 1 or 2 and can defend three positions. Did you see him D up Paul Pierce in the playoffs? PP’s like 6’9"!!!
Then we trade both of our picks (16 and 26) to the Bucks and take Blair at 10. I don’t really believe he will fall much past there.
The only other option would be to package Hinrich, Thomas and the 16 pick to Phoenix for Amare. In that case we resign BG and draft Nick Calathes (a lot of scouts think he’s the sleeper of the draft) at 26 to back up D-Rose.
The first option would give us this line-up:
PG: Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich
SG: John Salmons, Demarcus Nelson
SF: Luol Deng, Tim Thomas
PF: Tyrus Thomas, Dejuan Blair
C: Joakim Noah, Brad Miller
The second option would give us this line-up:
PG: Derrick Rose, Nick Calathes
SG: John Salmons, Ben Gordon, Demarcus Nelson
SF: Luol Deng, John Salmons (splitting time between 2 and 3 to give BG the 25-30 min he needs)
PF: Amare Stoudamire, Tim Thomas
C: Joakim Noah, Brad Miller
Obviously, option #2 looks a little better (that team is top-4 in the East) albeit a team that will play absolutely NO defense. Either way, we’re set to make a run as SOMEONE in 2010 and we’ll be a top-tier team in the East next season.
Debate me.

Paul Pierce scored on Hinrich just about whenever he wanted
Hinrich guarding Pierce is a real challenge. He can hold position, but he’s no threat to disrupt Pierce when he gets into his 14-18 foot midrange game.
And Pierce is about 6’7" in shoes.
12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.
by NBA Observer on May 21, 2009 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions
Um Paul Pierce is like 6’5/6’6, just to be exact. I think Nelson should be fine backing up Rose for 10 minutes and he is the same size as Hinrich and is supposedly pretty strong defensively. I’d like Hinrich as a 6th man but not as a 10 mill/year 6th man. That’s just too much money.
Option 2 is wiill give up 110 pts a game, not a viable option for a true contender.
Sorry bro
Pierce is listed at 6’8" on nba.com. that measurement is supposed to be barefoot. But that’s beside the point. Hinrich made 10 million this year, his contract actually decreases per year. Next year he will make 9 mil, the year after 7.65, so on and so forth. Not bad for the best backup PG in the league.
Also, if Stoudamire and Diaw aren’t suspended in the playoffs 2 years ago the Suns probably win the title. While giving up about 105 ppg – and I referenced that team would play no D. The idea is to remain competitive in the short term while setting ourselves up for 2010. Washington (if healthy) will be MUCH better next year than this. Same said for Milwaukee (they had a better record than us until Bogut and Redd went out). New Jersey should only get better and the Pacers will be much better with Dunleavy healthy. You could say the same for Toronto with a healthy Caulderon.
All I’m saying is we need to do SOMETHING or we’re not making the playoffs next year.

most of the mock drafts has
henderson going to the bobcats.. i guess they really need a SG since j-rich left. i just dont know if MJ is capable of drafting a Blue DEvil
I remember Michael dribbling at the top of the key. Everybody knew to just get the hell out of his way. - Steve Kerr
You all sound like Paxson. You’re not always going to get exact value for your players. If we’re trying to win a championship not just be a perennial playoff team, then certain moves need to be made. Sure Hinrich is a good valuable player who is worth more than expiring contracts and spare parts. But if moving him can allow us to make moves to build a true championship contener, ship him out. Is Blake as good as Hinrich? No. However, he is close enough, a decent backup PG…pretty much a poor man’s version of Kirk. With a cheaper contract that will give us valuable cap room to get an actual star player. Keeping Kirk will help us make the playoffs but shouldn’t we be shooting for more than be the 4th-6th seed for the next 6 years?
that's fine
although blake will make quite a chunk of change for his time here. if they turn around and pay ben big time, it’s the same deal though, isn’t it? 50 wins at best. don’t act like portland, which is stocked with potential, does us a great favor by unloading a back up with an expiring deal.
the way you move beyond a perennial 4-6 seed isn’t by giveaways. just like ben should return some young player with potential. even if it’s somebody’s 2005 boris diaw, languishing on their bench. somebody in derrick’s age range.
but there’s worse moves: chris caveman, for instance.

Kirk is worth way more defensively to us and other teams
than Steve Blake is offensively to us or any other teams.
Kirk is a starting PG or SG in the NBA. He needs the right team to make that happen. I think that team is Minnesota. The last thing they need is to get younger. They need experience more than anything. They have great parts in Al Jefferson, Foye, Gomes, and Kevin Love. They need a PG that will defense desperately.
If we want to make an offer for Amare I think we need a top 7 pick that can deliver Brandon Jennings to Phoenix.

NBA Draft Roundup, May 20
by: Jonathan Givony – President
May 20, 2009
Will the Clippers entertain offers for the #1 pick?…Rubio not interested in Memphis?…Jonny Flynn to Phoenix?…Jrue Holiday, DeJuan Blair, Austin Daye moving up draft boards…Tyrus Thomas on the trading block?…Which first round picks are available, and who is interested?
• Dunleavy: Clearly, we’re taking Blake Griffin
Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times does a phenomenal job of reporting by getting Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy to announce his intentions immediately after learning that his team will be drafting #1.
“Clearly, we’re taking Blake Griffin,” Clippers General Manager and Coach Mike Dunleavy said in a telephone interview from Barcelona, Spain.
“This guy is the No. 1 pick. We’re extremely excited. He’s the guy.”
While it may seem strange for the Clippers to so quickly anoint Griffin as their choice before really possessing a full picture of what’s on the table, many in the league think Dunleavy (also the Clippers GM in addition to their head coach) wants to leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that Griffin is going first, in an effort to get teams to make their best offers.
"The Clippers need a point guard more than anything. They can easily trade Baron Davis back to the Warriors if they want to. I think they are going to move down to 3 or 4 and try to get Rubio there."
While Oklahoma City would obviously be extremely interested in the prospect of acquiring the top pick and drafting local product Blake Griffin, there is one team standing in their way – the Memphis Grizzlies, who own the #2 pick. From what people around the league are saying, Rubio’s camp may already be sending out feelers indicating that he’s not interested in the least bit in playing in Memphis.
"Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio’s agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City. "
Unlike Griffin or Hasheem Thabeet, who don’t really have any choice where they will play next season if a team decides to play hardball, Rubio has a reasonably attractive alternative option at his disposal—returning to Spain.
"He’ll pull out if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing," the NBA source tells us. "Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff—would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That’s one way to get him to fall to three."
Fegan is already highly experienced in these matters, having unsuccessfully attempted to navigate fellow client Yi Jianlian towards the team of his choice in the 2007 draft, only to see Milwaukee foil his plans and pick him anyway. This time, though, he has a lot more leverage, as Rubio would likely have no problem staying in Badalona for another year or two or more if push came to shove. His buyout after all, is yet to be resolved, which in this case may actually be an advantage.
The Grizzlies are clearly aware of the politics surrounding their pick, but do not appear to be in any rush to make any decisions. "We’ll talk about all those things when they come up," their General Manager Chris Wallace told us. "Right now we’re still in evaluation mode. We haven’t had any conversations with him [Rubio] or anyone else in his camp."
Wallace shared that he will be headed out to Spain this weekend to watch Rubio compete in game three of the ACB playoffs, where Joventut will try to advance to the semifinals with a road win over Real Madrid. "I sent someone out there last week to watch him in the playoffs just in case we were able to move up," Wallace told us. "He’s hardly a sleeper and he hasn’t been very difficult to track. We feel very comfortable with what we know about him right now."
When asked whether Mike Conley’s status as Memphis’ tentative starter will deter the Grizzlies from selecting another point guard, Wallace indicated that that won’t be a factor. "We’re not in a position to be drafting for need. We’re going to go after the biggest talent available, whether that’s a big man or a point guard or whatever."
What might make the most sense on paper would be for the Clippers and Grizzlies to work out a trade in which Memphis could take Griffin and Los Angeles would get Rubio. For that to happen, Memphis would have to part with one of their core assets, likely Rudy Gay. Obviously we’ll have to stay tuned, because as John Hollinger correctly indicated in his latest column last night’s lottery left more questions than answers for the teams drafting in the top 5.
• Nash not in hurry to extend deal
Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic delivers news from Steve Nash’s camp that should give the Phoenix Suns organization some pause in how they assess this year’s NBA draft class.
Nash, 35, and his agent, Bill Duffy, have let the Suns know that they will wait to see how the Suns roster is altered before getting serious about negotiating a two-year contract extension. If and when that time comes, Duffy said Nash would ask for a raise from the current deal, which is slated to expire after paying him $13.125 million for the 2009-10 season.
“This is kind of a perplexing time because he (Nash) absolutely wants to win and he loves the (Phoenix) market but all the pieces have to line up properly,” Duffy said. “We just want to wait and see what their game plan is so we can sign off on it. We respect their willingness to extend his contract but we also are very cognizant of the team dynamic to make sure it will work in terms of Steve’s goals, which are to win a championship.”
According to sources, the Suns were already extremely high on Syracuse sophomore Jonny Flynn, and this report today may be enough to sway Phoenix into the notion of drafting a point guard in this draft, rather than the best player available. That was believed to be their philosophy going into June, to take the best talent they can find, rather than try to fill a specific need.
The problem for Phoenix is that Flynn is no lock by any stretch to be around with the 14th pick, as teams like Golden State, Milwaukee, New Jersey and Indiana also appear to be in the market at that position. If Flynn is off the board, look for the Suns to try and target the next best point guard available, possibly Ty Lawson or Eric Maynor.
• Draft Buzz
A poll of representatives from a good chunk of the league indicates some interesting trends.
-Jrue Holiday in the words of one executive, is "moving up more than anyone in this draft" right now, and could find himself in the 6-10 range when it’s all said and done. He even has an outside chance of being selected 4th by Sacramento, and he will indeed be working out there tomorrow from what we’re told. New York (8), Toronto (9) and Milwaukee (10) appear to be especially interested.
-The other "big riser" in this draft may be DeJuan Blair. Reports are swirling about Blair measuring a legit 6-7 in shoes (with a 7-2 wingspan) as well as losing as much as 15 pounds since arriving at IMG Academy. A slew of NBA teams have reportedly been out to evaluate him and some of the other top prospects training at the facility, and the buzz is growing around him every day seemingly. Milwaukee at 10, New Jersey at 11 and Indiana at 13 appear to be his sweet spots at the moment, and if he falls past there, he apparently will not get past Phoenix."
Short and sweet: NO DEJUAN BLAIR FOR US

That Hinrich + #16 for Minnesota's crap and #6 isn't looking too bad right now.
Do that before the draft, then during the draft, feel it out, and trade back down a couple of spots, maybe picking up an early second-rounder to nab someone like Toney Douglas or Danny Green.

If the Bulls could end up with Blair, Green and Toney Douglas, Jr.*, I'd be damned happy.
I don’t know if all three will stick, but I think there’s a chance that all three could be make up a darned-good bench. If they kept Gordon, Deng stayed healthy and Tyrus Thomas improved, a team of…
Rose/Douglas
Gordon/Douglas/Green
Deng/Green
Tyrus/Blair
Noah/Asik
would be quite the intriguing team. Hopefully, one superstar in Rose, a very, very good scorer in Gordon, three excellent role players in Deng, Thomas and Noah and specialist yet versatile sort of bench. And they’d be 28 and younger for another 3 years.
*depending on the mood, they’d draft one at 26, and the other in the early second round

Oh, and by this, I mean: the Warriors and Knicks won't take Blair.
If the Bulls land in the #6 spot (I think it’s unlikely, but it’s this hypothetical), they could either take Harden or ….. actually, they can’t trade back a spot or two to the Raptors to get a 2nd round. I really don’t see how the Bulls could get into the early 2nd round. The only thing is to convince Minnesota that the Hinrich and the 16th are worth the junk the of the T’Wolves, plus the 6th and the 28th. Or if they made a trade w/ the Wizards to No. 5, getting their 2nd round pick out of it, too.
