I think this is the best, most objective evaluation of Thomas that I've ever read.

BlogABull included. I don’t have a Chicago MSM shit-list because I rarely read them, but McGraw would definitely be off of it now.

Overall, he's my favorite of the local media

Even when I don’t agree with him, it just seems like he at least put some thought into what he’s writing and isn’t spouting off the same cliches or sticking to the local media stereotypes of the players.

Thomas

should study McDyess and Kemp.

I've been saying the same thing for a while now

That once Tyrus starting to show that near perfect form and hit those jump shots, it became more and more clear that he envisions himself a SF, and for a tweener who coming in looked like a SF, it’s a shame we continue to play him out of position out of need as a pure PF.

I’d like to see some PF and SF time with Tyrus, move him more and more to the SF to see what we have there. With his athleticism and myriad of skills he seems like he can get comfortable there, and his ability to play lock down D at times and good help defense at others, will only bolster his effectiveness on D as he won’t be as caught out of position trying to guard the 4’s inside when he’s hanging around the wings covering his SF counterpart….

Thanks for the article, why this guy isn’t writing in place of KC is beyond me…

No I know that

But the Trib I would imagine pays more and is a “loftier” job….and KC sucks and is on TV, etc far too often….

That’s all..

Tyrus playing SF still makes no sense offensive or defensively.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Tyrus taking jumpers on offense. But, taking jumpers doesn’t make him SF. See Aldridge, West, McDyess, etc. Tyrus’s speed, ball handling, and passing ability are advantages that largely disappear if he moves to SF, and Tyrus doesn’t use his size well enough to gain an advantage by playing SF.

Putting one of the best shot blockers in the league, and a more than adequate rebounder at SF makes little sense even if he misses assignments.

What if we were able to get Bosh and still keep TT?

(I think I asked this question of you in another Fanpost)

by hlac on May 12, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It might be the "best fit available", but it still wouldn't maximize Thomas's abilities.

They’d be smarter to trade Thomas than use him at the SF position. Ideally, that’s why you’d use him to get Bosh. If, however, Toronto insisted on Noah instead of Thomas and wouldn’t budge, I’d rather play Bosh at C and Thomas at PF, or try to trade Thomas for a comparable player at center.

by tyger1147 on May 12, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see how that works.

Bosh is mostly an isolation player, which means 3-point shooters are necessary to space the floor so you don’t end up with Bosh just taking long jump shots. Thomas has no real experience guarding SFs. Putting Thomas on a SF like Pierce in isolation situation makes a lot of sense, but Thomas doesn’t have anywhere close to the technique he would need to consistently chase SFs through screens. By playing Thomas at SF you’re getting maybe 60% of what he is at PF.

by Scotter on May 12, 2009 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know that

But Tyrus’s athleticism, ball handling and his seemingly want to be in teh SF spot (which hurts his D and O) seems to make him more suited at the SF spot.

Plus, he probably would get more blocks at the SF spot than at the PF spot since he’d follow his man crashing into the lane, and get blocks similar to how Wade does it.

I think Tyrus is still a top 2 athletic 3 in the league, and certainly don’t think he loses any competitive advantage there at all….in fact he gains because he’s now on par with the rest in height and probably as strong as all not named Lebron…

Yeah, at SF he'll get killed in transition defense

If he can’t even keep up with Big Baby sprinting down the court, imagine him trying to guard SFs in transition.

by Rose MVP on May 12, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um...

Tyrus is probably the quickest and most agile next to Rose on the team. His head’s not always there…..problem at any position, and that’s what caused Big B….

But if he figures all it out and stays focused, I see no reason to think he can’t run the court…

Is Tyrus a good shooter?

I’m not saying either way (though I’d lean to “no” for the past season)….he certainly looks good, but he uses his legs and his shot is much “longer” than most post and pop players who typically have very simple shots that rarely if ever miss.

The question is: What is a good percentage for absolutely open 15 foot “set” shots? What percentage does Tyrus hit? I feel like with some players (and not always what you’d consider a good player) that shot is almost an 80% make. Now maybe that player can’t do anything else that Tyrus can do, but they make that open shot every time they get it.

Can we get “open shot” shooting percentages? ; >

Using one's legs is a bad thing in shooting?

I may have read it all now.

Antonio McDyess who may be the best mid-range jump shooting PF, and a guy

who almost only takes open shots made 47.3%. That’s about as good as it gets for PFs. Thomas made around 40% of his mid-range jumpers from December through the end of the season, He has a ways to go, but good enough that he deserves to take jumpers. How many of the top mid-range shooting PFs are 23? Players jump shots almost always improve over their NBA career. Big guys who couldn’t make a jumper at 22, end their career as jump shooting specialists.

BA players have stretches where they make 80% of their jumpers, but they can’t do over significant periods of time. We remember the good shooting nights by people we categorize as “good shooters” and forget the 3 for 12 nights. And those that have a negative view of Thomas’s shooting ability remember the 1 for 5, but not the 4 for 5 nights.

I still prefer Tyrus as a 4. He is a better mismatch at the 4. He has decent handles and is much quicker than most PFs and his strengths are being no further than 10 ft from the basket. I’d rather him get more alley-oops and putbacks than him clanking jumpers all game. He has decent form but shooting J’s shouldn’t be his game. If the Bulls insist on using him at the 3, then they should study how Thad Young made the transition. Young is a good example of a 3/4 tweener being effective.

Keeping Tyrus at the 3 encourages him to just shoot 18 footers all game and it will greatly reduce his rebounding. Keep him at the 4 and maybe use him at the 3 in certain situations…

by C Smoove on May 12, 2009 1:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tyrus making jump shots will open up alley-oops and driving lanes.

There’s a middle ground between don’t leave the paint and play like a SF that the majority of PFs operate in. A 55 jumper to 45 in the paint ratio like Thomas had this year is perfectly acceptable.

I especially liked the "non-creative" statement.

That’s the worst thing with Thomas on offense, in my opinion. Once he decides on something, he’s going to do it, no matter what. And it makes him look “stupid”. I still think more and more playing time is the best solution there. And better coaching. This seems like an individual skill, too, though, that he can work on at IMG.

That's why he was most encouraged by the patience he was starting to show in the paint.

Whenever he slowed himself down in the paint or driving to the basket, he showed that he can finish.

by Scotter on May 12, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather the Bulls run a real offense than the crap they've been playing.

Giving the ball to Thomas on a broken one-on-one play with 7 seconds left and saying (metaphorically-speaking) “Now make something happen RIGHT NOW!” does not seem the best use of his abilities. Yet.

Yeh I understand his ability to make jumpers will open up his ability to drive. Problem is he forgets to drive and falls in love with shooting jumpers. There is a difference….he rarely dives into the lane after a pass, he will float to the perimeter. NOT ACCEPTABLE. His blocks and rebounds will decrease if he was a SF. I simply don’t think his skillset serves him being a fulltime SF….maybe a few minutes a game but again he should be encouraged to stay around the basket. Good things happen for him there. His coaches at LSU only told him one thing:stay around the basket. And he shined in the tournament following that advice.

Him and Derrick should work on pick and roll alley-oops all summer long. Keep him at the 4 and run a real offense and he could average 14-16 pts/7-9 rebounds a game. He needs to work on his body control too so when he drives, it’s not like the usual bull in a china shop deal.

Well he

Did just learn the jump shot….maybe as he matures he can better mix the 2. He seemed this year to get much better at the jump shot and forgot how effective he was around the basket…..

Strange how some of the same excuses people had for J.R. Smith being shown...

…the door after spending about a day as a Chicago Bull are the same things we are hearing about Tyrus Thomas now….yet I’d be willing to bet that many Bulls fans wouldn’t mind having the ultra athletic J.R. Smith running around in a Bulls uniform now (considering how much complaining there is about Ben Gordon).

As said in an earlier post, Thomas simply hasn’t been coached very well. He has been GROSSLY mishandled in Chicago. No coaching staff since he’s been here has really put him in position to be successful. I always saw him as a Shawn Marion type. He can’t create his own offense and you don’t have to run a single play for him yet when you just let him run and jump he will be a force on both ends. Problem before was that the Bulls didn’t have the PG to push the pace in such a way that Thomas could be effective playing that way offensively. Well, now the Bulls have the best PG to do that.

As for defensively, is there any doubt the Bulls are a different on that end of the court when he’s in the game? Tyrus Thomas began to have a mini- Dwight Howard effect, meaning people started to “hear footsteps” when going to the basket. If the Bulls can get Thomas to understand (or if he understands) that there is no need for him to try to create offensively, then this kid can be special. He can shoot the ball and he’s a willing and capable defender. You don’t get rid of this guy….unless of course moving him gets you a front court all-star…preferrably named Stoudemire or Bosh but we’ll see how that works out.

Whoever the frontcourt allstar is if TT gets traded for him

Had better be a defensive allstar… aka not Stoudemire.
I think they would severly miss Tyrus’s defensive presence & blocks too much, even with VDN screwing up 4th quarters by benching him.
