Deng's leg still bothering forward
[I know a lot of people suggest 'shutting it down' and/or getting surgery. Or that he can't be allowed to play international ball in the summer. But supposedly it's not an injury that usually needs surgery, and I see the likelihood that it’s just something that takes several weeks of rest to recover, and it just sucks that it happens to be the last several weeks of the season. -ed.]

just shut it completely down
Dude hasn’t played in over a month…it’s not getting any better. Even if he COULD come back and play 5-10 minutes, what will that do besides mess up what little cohesion they have? Deng or no Deng, they aren’t getting out of the first round anyway. Just shut him down and we’ll look for him in GB next summer

"but the Bulls need another body in the frontcourt."
Anyone has a wish list of players the Bulls should talk to?

They just signed Linton Johnson
for the rest of the year.
TOP NBA FREE AGENT SMALL FORWARDS:
Mickael Gelabale, Jawad Williams, DerrMarr Johnson, Ruben Patterson, Ronald Dupree, Linton Johnson, Ira Newble, Patrick Ewing Jr, Bobby Jones, Darius Rice, Kasib Powell
That was as of 3/13 so some, like Johnson, might have signed w/ teams by now…

It would be nice to bring in
Patterson, Dupree, or Ewing Jr if they were still available.

Williams Will Rejoin Cavs
The Cavaliers will sign forward Jawad Williams this morning to fill their vacant roster spot.
Williams, 26, will take Eric Snow’s spot on the roster. He walked past the media during Coach Mike Brown’s pregame availability.
“He’s got tickets, a back-stage pass and locker-room access,” Brown said. “But he is not on our roster tonight.” — The News-Herald

does the organization have any say on whether he can play for GB this summer?

i dont see how it
can be good for him to play for them. huge possibility of getting hurt again. and in my eyes he hasnt deserved the chance to play either, with what he gave us this season.

it all seems to much of a hassle anyway… its not like he playing in the olympics this summer. its just too much of a chance for a guy who has not reached any close to his value for the team

I bet he's still above value to the Bulls.
He certainly outplayed his paycheck the first three years he was in the league. I’m sure he hasn’t lived up to it this year. Last year? Not sure. I bet it’s even or slightly above.

Bulls' doctor: "The best treatment for a stress fracture...is more stress."
“If stress caused it, stress can cure it !” according to Bulls doctor Nick Riviera, expert in reverse sports psychology & surgery.
/ Did it really take a team of doctors until the end of February to realize that something was wrong with Deng? Couldn’t they just watch him play?

in response to yfBB's editor's notes on this story...
he shouldn’t play for Great Britain this year, but it has nothing to do with whether or not he needs surgery.
He’s being paid a lot of money to play for the Bulls, and he’s being paid nothing to play for Britain, and yet he’s going to risk re-injuring himself and not improving his game to play for the country team – that’s not even where he’s really from, he’s from the Sudan – rather than getting himself healthy for the Bulls and next year. Not very encouraging from the Bulls fan’s perspective. It makes me sort of embarassed to have his jersey hanging in my closet. I need to get a Rose jersey, damn it.
Fire Vinny.

I hate using NBA players for international competition in general
but it’s a too accepted already. So in that culture I don’t see why the Bulls should go piss Deng off by telling him he can’t play. That’s if he’s ready for basketball in general, I wouldn’t want him playing instead of rehabbing. I’m assuming whatever rehab would be done by then.

"Piss Deng off"
Who is Luol Deng?
Him and his agent rushed the idiots into completeing the contract without enough forethought (more time wouldn’t have made a difference anyway.. Bulls decision makers are idiots continuelly)
What does he “deng” bring to the Bulls game that isn’t easily replaceable. Roll the dice, get him health and trade him for something like LaFrenz contract?
man up!

At least Yao Ming has an excuse.
China pretty much owns him and he HAS to play for them over the summer despite his frequent injuries. You can see how all that basketball year round hurts his health. Other international players are relatively healthy so it isn’t a big deal. Gordon playing for BG isn’t a big deal because he is healthy. As for Deng, he does have choices to make for himself. It might be a hard choice, but in the end it will be up to him. If it blows up in his face it will be on him.
If he does use his summers for GB I just want to have the “Deng’s young, he has potential” crap to stop being said all the time as an excuse for him not getting better from this point on. If he doesn’t spend any time getting healthy and working on his skills then none of that potential will be realized. He isn’t talented enough to get all of that without working for it.

yfBB right on about rest w/o surgery
Stress fractures aren’t usually repaired surgically (I’ve never heard that anyway). It just needs to heal on it’s own.
And you definitely don’t want to push it, or you end up with a full fracture. Who knows how much extra damage was done when he was trying to “play through it” before it was properly diagnosed? A buddy of mine knew he had a stress fracture but continued distance running anyway (not the sharpest knife in the drawer). He ended up with a full break. His leg was casted or wrapped up for 2 – 3 months, and it’s always tougher to get back after a full immobiliztion like that.
Yeah, it looks like Deng’s being a wuss right now because he doesn’t have any slings, casts, or bandages, but the dude has a broken leg.

my problem isn't so much with him not playing now, it's with the idea that he's going to play for GB
this summer rather than resting his body and preparing for next year by working on his game and letting his bumps, bruises and stress fractures heal completely. Because through his first few years Deng has started to seem more and more like this guy:

To the point where, if he has another season like this, he’s officially Mr. Glass.

Haha I wasn't really serious but if BG were to have a "nemesis"
with the organization it would have to be Pax. But you never know, maybe the “health-reasons” causing his supposed retirement around the trade deadline was just Pax’s way of acting mortal…

actually, BG would be the perfect foil to Deng in the Bruce Willis role.
He’s been extremely durable throughout his time here – he’s missed a grand total of 12 games in his 5 years here. 10 of which happened last year. Deng on the other hand has missed 73 (so far, that number will go up as he misses the rest of the year) games in 5 years. But Deng got the money, and Ben got the shaft. If they weren’t seemingly friends, they would make perfect foils as enemies.

Agree on GB
But many (not necessarily you) have cited this as an example of a lack of toughness on Deng’s part, and I don’t agree with that. There’s a difference between being injury-prone (like Mr. Glass here), and not being tough. The first guy gets legitimately injured more often than other players, the second guy doesn’t play through the painful conditions that many players do. I think at this point Loul is still the first guy, not the second guy.
However, both result in missing games anyway.
Good movie by the way.. “You know why, David? Because of the kids. They called me Mr Glass”

Yes, stress fractures in the leg are very painful. I stress fractured my shin in high school during football
and played on it for a month because the trainer misdiagnosed it as shin splints. After that I had to go on crutches and wear a walking boot for a while. It was not very fun. So I’ve sympathy for Deng when it comes to that, it’s this business with GB that rankles me. He shouldn’t be playing for them, plain and simple. He’s demonstrated no ability to stay healthy and given that, he should take the summer off from playing games and just work on his shooting mechanics so that he can shoot from deep so he will fit better with Derrick.
Fire Vinny.

shut him down til playoffs start. if he up for it then play him 15 mins off the bench.
Bulls are better with salmons anyway. Deng is nothing but trade bait and i’ll take an expiring. but maybe the suns or Toronto will be stupid enough to trade amare or Bosh with deng as the outgoing centerpiece and Kirk/filler/pick(s)
by SD20 on Apr 8, 2009 3:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Shut him down completely, keep what little team chemistry there is right now.
If he plays with GB, he plays with GB, that isn’t the concern for us right now. If he can get up to full strength for GB, then maybe he won’t have it lingering next season. If he tries to play through it now, it will just be less rest he has total until next season, regardless of the GB decision.

Yeah
But if Luol plays well in the playoffs (and I do think he could be necessary for us to have the glimmer of hope backing up Salmons for 20-25 MPG) Luol could save this lost season….
I want him back. A stress fracture, especially one that is so small that only the most specialized specialist doctor can find it shouldn’t be career ending.
