Van Gundy, Abbott call it a Flagrant
[From the FanShots. This is an embarrassing admission by Van Gundy, saying that flagrants should be called differently in close and late games. He's off my coach search list. Or maybe not, since that strategy works for the C's. -ed.]
Van Gundy can be heard via on link on the espn homepage. JVG think it should have been called in the first 3 quarters, but not the 4th. Regardless, he agrees it fits the definition of a flagrant

i hate the
“it shouldn’t be called at the end of the game” bullshit.
it is what it is. if it would have been a flagrant in the first minute of the game, it’s still a flagrant in the last minute of the game.

i hate that shit as well. Players shouldnt be allowed to just take down players to prevent 2 points.
Rondo was affecting the game by hitting him in the mouth, so why cant a ref affect the game by calling a flagrant?

VDN should sub in Aaron Gray at the beginning of the 4th next game...
And then punch Rondo straight in the mouth the first time he drives to the hole.

It's not just when it's called,
it’s who it’s called on, and who was hit. All these exceptions: it’s the NBA’s little way of manufacturing drama. AkA, revenue.

I watched that play
I wasn’t sure if it was a push. At least not with rondo’s left arm. It was close. The outside official had the best angle and called nothing.
The play where Rose caught the Gordon passed that was tipped and laid it in, Glen Davis came across the lane and creamed Rose with his body. Rose isn’t Dwayne Wade in the acting department, but a little drama would have sold this easy foul call.

Yeah, I guess that play
Seemed kinda obvious to me that Rondo kept his hand close to his body and nudged Rose with it. Actually, a little more than a nudge…. but did a good job of concealing the hand between their two bodies. Rose tipped over and ball rolled out of bounds.
Usually in this case the ref will blow the whistle and call it for the Bulls to inbound the ball (and ignore the foul)… but in this case it was waaay to obvious that the ball came off of Rose — so the ref couldn’t award the Bulls the ball.

Frankly,
it’s not just the Miller play. It’s Rondo pushing Rose on drives – low, but obviously. It’s Pierce slapping his hand on a fast break – blatant foul, it’s on the front page of SI right now for everybody to see – to no call.
They’re going to be “watching them,” are they? Doesn’t matter. Don’t care, NBA. You gave the Celtics game 5, just like you gave Lebron a third pivot foot, and gave the Celtics the ability to foul the heck out of Kobe and “win” their championship. What a great story! Hollinger called it an obvious flagrant
though pointing out that the bad call is not the only thing that cost the Bulls the game and that calling it correctly would not have guaranteed a Bulls win.
And everybody’s favorite (or one of ‘em anyway) idiot, Skip Bayless, and guest (I believe Jalen Rose this morning) also said a definite flagrant on 1st and 10 this morning. (You’d be amazed at what you’ll watch to avoid working on a dissertation!)
And BS himself goes to all sorts of lengths to avoid calling it a flagrant:
He had no chance of blocking the shot, and he had to hit Miller as hard as he could to prevent the and-one, so screw it … SMACK! (He even admitted this after the game.) Since the motion technically looked like Rondo was swiping at the ball — even though his hand wasn’t within two feet of it — the officials couldn’t call a flagrant and that was that.

But NOT calling it a flagrant basically guaranteed a loss.

I thought Hollinger had a great line about the series
“Through four games and 52 minutes, 58 seconds of a fifth, all anyone could talk about was how entertaining the Celtics-Bulls series was and the theatrical battles between Gordon and Allen, or between Rose and Rondo, or between Del Negro and logic.”
Del Negro is taking a beating from people who have finally started to pay attention to his coaching in the post season. I wonder what, if any, effect it will have on his job prospects with the bulls.

Q: Should Rajon Rondo be suspending for Game 6 for raking Miller across the face?
A: Yes. Because he admitted afterward that it was kinda, sorta intentional. But here’s why the league WON’T suspend him: The NBA would be admitting the officials blew that call. So, they’ll fine Rondo and admonish him in a statement, and that will be that. Gotta keep the illusion going that NBA referees don’t suck!

i love how simmons went out of his way to say it shouldnt have been called
and then later says rondo should be suspended for it. so according to him and van gundy, the last few minutes of a game you can do everything but bring a mace onto the court and smack someone upside the head with it.
by Calogero on Apr 29, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I found that funny, too.
My opinions are the exact opposite: (a) it should definitely have been called a flagrant, especially at the end of the game; and (b) it’s not the type of foul for which Rondo should be suspended (unlike Howard’s elbow trick). If the league wants to suspend Rondo, yay for the Bulls I guess, but it’s going to set a weird precedent. Rondo wasn’t malicious, he was trying to make a smart basketball play and just ended up making a dumb and dangerous one. Howard, on the other hand, wasn’t making a basketball play AND was making a dangerous move.
Whatever.

That is a joke
An argument can be made (although not a good one IMO) that ticky-tack fouls shouldn’t be called at the end of a game, but flagrants are the exact kind of fouls that absolutely should be called at all times.
by JeffD on Apr 29, 2009 1:59 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
Definitely...
Refs don’t want to call ticky tack fouls I think because they don’t wan’t to decide the game (ie: fouls that really didn’t really alter the outcome of a play). Not calling a flagrant though is inexcusible, and basically a free pass to the team that commits it.
At the end of the day though it’s fine. The Bulls are not a very physically intimidating/bruising team, and maybe that’s a need they can address in the offseason. There were moments when Perkins was making Noah and TT his bitch that game, and there is no reason on Earth that Davis should be scoring as much as he does.

What really stings is that the NBA is reviewing the call
And could still call it a flagrant on Rondo. But it wouldn’t affect the outcome of the game.
Well if they replayed that Heat-Hawks game with 51 seconds to go, why can’t they replay the last 3 seconds of this past game?
In all reality, the stakes are much higher in this case than that other game.

Is there a source for this?
Miller shot, and missed, while blinking again and again, apparently impaired by the fumes of the compound used to close the wounds in his mouth.
What kind of compound would you use to close a wound inside your mouth? Don’t they use Vaseline in Boxing?
I was wondering if Tedeschi was using some chemicals, but knowing Miller had to go shoot free throws I figured they would avoid it.
12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

Now they say that Doc would have chosen who to shot if Miller couldn't
he would only have the option from the players who were on the court, right? I’m thinking that it might have been better to let one of the others shot that free throw considering what Miller had just gone through and especially if fumes were affecting him.

Here's the rub
Doug Collins said that because it was just a personal foul, if Miller could not come in to shoot the free throws then Doc Rivers could choose anyone on the Bulls roster.
If it was called a flagrant and Miller could not return then…
If it had been called a flagrant, Vinny Del Negro could have specified the shooter of his choice (in the playoffs, Ben Gordon, John Salmons, Derrick Rose and Tyrus Thomas are all over 80%), and the Bulls would have had the ball after the shots.

Miller says his tooth when hit into his mouth which caused the bleeding. You need stitches to close this. Vaseline won’t do. The rules say they the staff has to stop the bleeding so it cannot affect other players.

i’d research it, but even thinking about it any more makes me light headed, LOL!
no doubt they used it, because of miller’s reaction. it’s more than simple, basic pain on his face there.

I think they should have upgraded it to a flagrant 1 for a couple of reasons
1. It was a flagrant foul
2. It sets a bad precedent to officially review the foul and determine it isn’t a flagrant.
3. Practically speaking, the upgrade wouldn’t have mattered a hill of beans – it doesn’t change the outcome of game 5, it doesn’t impact game 6 any more than all the publicity already has, and it only affects Rondo if he racks up another 3 (I believe it’s 4 total?) flagrant points. And if the Cs are in the playoffs long enough for Rondo to have another 3 of those, he deserves the suspension.
I don’t want the Bulls to intentionally retaliate, but I’m hoping Rondo gets watched like a hawk and called for every little even close to a foul thing he does tomorrow.

Chicago, meanwhile, has a rookie coach who would contend in any NBA “least likely to diagram a killer game-winning play” contest. (When the Bulls had been needing big buckets in this series, mostly they had come from Ben Gordon or Derrick Rose creating on the fly.)

Well the NBA says it wasn’t a flagrant. Maybe it was, though. I’m not sure how the Bulls let themselves get in that position anyways. They were up 11 in the 4th… then they were up 3 with Ray Allen fouled out. They had the game and the series wrapped up.
by LarBrd33 on Apr 29, 2009 4:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
"Maybe"?
Watch the tape. And one of the multiple reasons they got in that position is because the Celtics can foul the shit out of Derrick Martell Rose with impunity, whereas Rajon Rondo apparently had body guards chasing him around in pinstripes.
“The Bulls put themselves into that position anyways.” That argument, cum Hollinger, is just so weak. You know what else the Bulls did? Put themselves in the position to win. But more to the point, the Celtics did just as many things to do lose the game. The only difference was the league handed them the game, and series, with a bow on top. Though probably they should have topped it with a receipt. This isn’t a gift, after all – it’s an exchange.
It’s intellectually facile, myopic crap to say “the Bulls should’ve won anyway.” Take it elsewhere. Like ESPN.com: apparently that weak shit is all the rage come from “top analysts” like John Hollinger.

Hey
I recognize that the Celtics are slightly better than us without KG. Two hall of famers and an all-star (I count Rondo) has us beat. No shame in that.
The Bulls losing isn’t what I’m angry about: the better team should win. It’s all this other stuff – posing, entitlement, “selling” calls. Whining in the papers, flopping on the court, and being rewarded. And now the NBA is lying to us, directly to our faces, telling us it wasn’t a flagrant 1. Well, it was. No doubt. None. The NBA simply doesn’t want to deal with the fallout of that mess, so they would prefer to lie, adding insult to (literal) injury.
So now it sucks. Because the Bulls will get mega calls next game. It’s in Chicago, and we just got screwed. And then the Celtics will complain, as is their wont, and the calls will seesaw back to you guys. And then we’ve just witnessed brilliant performances devolve into a contest to see who can better prey on officials. (You guys win – KG’s chin, remember.)
That’s the issue, LB. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a combination of laziness, ineptitude, and officials taking short cuts (Pierce would’ve never fouled that guy…Lebron never would traveled…) in the way they call games. Calling the player, and not the play, is the NBA official’s numero uno heuristic, and it falls apart just as readily. And yes, it’s suspicious that these borderline calls consistently fall in a manner pleasing to the NBA’s bottom line. Though, if you don’t know to follow the money by now…let’s just say I envy the world you live in.

Especially because I counted him hacking DRose two times in

Rose was underneath the hoop and got the rebound and Perkins fouled him over the back on the rebound by slapping at his arm, then Rose went up with the shot and Perkins hit him in exactly the same way – no call. Rose of course missed because he got slapped on the forearm – hard – and it lead to a Celtics run-out.

Hacking players is only a foul if you wear a non-green uniform
It should be St. Patrick’s day, every day.

Thanks AR.
Guess BaB really helps with the whole “venting of sports anger” thing. I needed it.

Van Gundy was a REAL coach
I would kill for Paxdorf traveling back in time and magically hiring him instead of VDN.
If Van Gundy had been coaching this team for a whole year, this series would be over by now.

No thanks, I want to see Rose push the ball up the court, not walk it up so JVG can call a play.

Was Definitely a flagrant. But ...
The refs have been pretty consistently bad in this series. For both teams. Fouls 5 & 6 on Ray Allen were a joke. Noah has been taking a beating. Rose continues to get NO calls in the lane (although the play discussed above where he tossed ball outside looked pretty clearly NOT a foul).
Honestly, I think it evens out. Even if that Rondo foul was bullshit. Bulls lost yesterday for a lot of reasons, the refs being just one of many.
