Theoretically Speaking 04-28-09

Here are some observations that I had watching tonights game:

  • While trying to decide what channel to watch, TNT or COMCAST Sportsnet, I was thinking what do other BlogaBull members watch? Do you watch the crew on comcast who have watched the Bulls all season or the TNT crew who give you an outside opinion. I usually watch TNT because I like having that outside view. What do you guys perfer?
  • Wasn't Miller supposed to be the player who brought us stability? Someone who we can rely on to make minimal mistakes in the playoffs. But man the last couple of games his turnovers have been horrible. Kudos for losing a tooth but the turnovers have been critical for this young team.
  • I almost forgot Derrick Rose is a rookie. He reminded me tonight.
  • Did everyone get bad flashbacks when Hinrich *dribbled, dribbled, dribbled, went back, dribbled, dribbled, dribbled, then went back further*, I'm so happy we got Rose now to run the point.
  • Gordon continued his "wtf is he doing!!!! ha YES he made IT!!!!!!!" moments.

So after this game I feel that we might go 7 games but Boston keeps showing us that experience matters in the playoffs. We are the most talented team but it seems everything we do the Celtics counter at the right moment. That comes with experience. Anything can happen in game 7 but I have a feeling that we fall short.

TNT crew

I’ve been watching the TNT crew because I enjoy Doug Collins. He is very knowledgeable about the game and in my opinion one of the best analyst’s.

he had an on-air love note to Kirk tonight

that was fun, maybe Vinny wasn’t the worst choice of coach?

Yeah, I was thinking that myself.

About being glad we didn’t get Collins. He didn’t seem to have a clue about our guys tonight. But I generally watch TNT, and then switch over to Comcast if something is called really badly to make sure they see it the same way as myself.

but if we would've got Collins...

we could fire him after a few years and then win 6 more rings!

I have generally watched TNT

because their HD feed is better. I get tired of all of the Celtics (see Garnett, Kevin) talk from Collins inc., but Neil Funk is a substandard play-by-play guy in my opinion and all things considered, I’ll take the crispest high def.

TNT is by far the best

of ESPN, TNT, and ABC. i was surprised at how poor the quality was on the sunday game.

i watch TNT cause i live in boston and if i had to watch the game on NESN i’d kill myself.

I like the broadcast crew on ABC.

I’m talking about Marc Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen. Breen is very under the radar, and my favorite NBA play-by-play guy of all. Van Gundy is both smart and hilarious and while Jackson is not great, his style meshes in well. Overall, that’s my favorite booth, although Collins and Harlen are real good too.
The worst guys are Dick Stockton, Reggie Miller, Mike Tirico and Hubie Brown. Only the latter two work together, but none do their jobs very well. Stockton is way too dry and senile, Miller is just bad, and Brown is too verbose. Tirico just doesn’t do it for me.

by dakoose on Apr 28, 2009 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

jackson kinda sucks

but i like jvg and breen is decent.

i wasn’t even talking about the play by play… i was just wondering how the hell ABC’s HD quality for the game was so bad.

Hubie Brown is fantastic.

Definitely the best booth.

And yes, Dick Stockton is senile. Ever since last year’s NLDS I have developed a simmering hatred for his voice and general incompetency. His days are long past. Time to hang it up. Hubie and Tirico aren’t too bad, bud yes, verbose is right on the money.

Yeah and that too

THe camera work on the other channels is far superior even not on HD than Comcast’s. I mean it’s really night and day at how much sharper and how much better their camera folk are on the ESPNs, ABC and TNT broadcast.

Ok so Vinny seems to have the X's down.....now he needs to learn the O's.

though...

part of that could be due to the fact that those stations have a budget about 753,459,231 times larger than CSN.

Kirk seems way more comfortable as a 6th man

playing off Rose.

my lil brother called kirk

a smaller version of shane battier….i laughed…but i think its true. He is a 4th (3rd at best) option on offense, and in terms of defense, put him on the best perimeter player (while keeping a shot blocker near the rim just in case).

by piccolomair on Apr 29, 2009 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

That last part is more than key...

The way Hinrich plays up in peoples’ bodies, they’ll get around him from time to time and his lack of foot speed won’t let him catch up. But a shot-blocker at the rim would help that.

And that's why we play Brad Miller

"Ben Gordon is a bundle of muscle and clutch. That's all he's made of. Drink BG7 energy drink, you'll grow a pair of balls on your balls."

by Prevenge on Apr 29, 2009 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

yea agreed on all points

its not even so much about foot speed, (there are times when the guy kirks guarding isnt actually faster than him) but kirks still not strong enough to body up guys when they pick up thier dribble and attack the rim. Everytime he guards someone taking him to the post, he uses alot of energy to stay in front of his defender, because if he ends up behind him, he knows hes gonna get pushed under the rim. Athletically kirk cant handle being in the post, he has to outwit his opponenets more than anything when in the post, and that can only take you so far.

Kirk though

Is more skilled than Battier. Battier really only shoots 3’s. Both are great defenders. Kirk though can run the point, he just seems to not always have the confidence….even still.

Ok so Vinny seems to have the X's down.....now he needs to learn the O's.

by majoyenrac on Apr 29, 2009 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

i think his confidence

wavers after he makes mistakes. Missing wide open shots, not just one, but several cause him to pass over wide open looks, a few bad plays on his part or turnovers while running the point, and he slows the game down or gives up the ball to whoever else is with him, but its nowhere near the level of lack of confidence he was at last year….

I think kirk maybe more skilled in the areas of being a guard, but shane battier makes up for that for just being a 6’8 forward. That height advantage means more mass, means being stronger, means being able to contain even better players.

Kirk can run the point better if he was in an actual system (much like deng can be a better forward in a better system). He is an xs and os type of pg, meaning he knows where he is suppsoed to be, where everyone on his team is supposed to be. One of the reasons kirk is always sent in with brad miller (i suppose) is that brad miller is a better player in a s ystem, so the two always run a pick a pop scenerio, while joakim and tyrus are the kinds of bigs who need someone (rose and even to an extent gordon) to create that opportunity for them to get a dunk in. Tyrus still seems out of place at time on offense, or else he can be a great pick and pop option.

Last year and this year, if kirk is over dribbling its because there isnt a set offense, sometimes you can tell vinny actually drew up a play (when kirk has the ball i mean) because he wont be tenetive with the ball, hell start moving and youll see the play being run. Rose, gordon, and salmons are really good at one on one play, and noah is really good at choosing his spots on the court to get dunks and rebounds, i think thats why the offense constantly looks like nothing is being run, instead those players are basically told what they should look out for and are sent to battle. Kirk is the kind who needs a play drawn up so he can execute it. Thats probably why skiles liked him so much….

I agree with you about Kirk's confidence

He hasn’t been the same since we lost to the Detroit Pistons in the playoffs a few years ago.

I was watching the game with my mom in the room

and she heard King say “Pierce needs to open his mouth and take it”
……
laughter ensued
My mother, who knitted during my HS games, then started ripping Stacey like the shitty announcer he is.

While I place a pox on both the houses of King and Funk, I cannot stand the ball-licking that the national announcers give all Boston teams.

My observations

-Way to bitch about the officiating pre-game Doc. I normally hold my tongue when I watch a game, but tonight I nearly met Bea Arthur after the near-stroke I had.
-Fire Vinnie
-When BG is cold, please sit him for 5 minutes. Give it a shot. Maybe he’ll go back in and heat up.
-Fire Vinnie
-I want to fight Kevin Garnett. Is there a worse sport out there? Hey KG, remember when you went to the locker room in game 1? You sir are a jackass and have lost all the love I had for you when you were the man in Minnesota. I hope you get swine flu
-And finally, fire Vinnie

TNT Crew

They are just much more professional and call a better game. King and Funk though are light years ahead of Dore (I miss Redd a bit)…..but still not close to TNT, or ABC, or ESPN when the games are on those ones.

The best Bulls broadcast team (since the mid 1980's at least)

by far was Jim Durham and Red Kerr.

I can't wait till next year.

Let me explain.

Like J Theory said, you forget Rose is a rookie until he makes decisions like he did tonight. But such things are the growing pains that not only the players, but Bulls fans must endure. This series is maddening because if you’ve been a Bulls fan long enough then you went through the last cycle of learn, learn then WIN BIG in all these situations!!! It’s killing me to watch us make some of the boneheaded mistakes that we’re making. But I know that next year Derrick Rose will be better, will exert more control and leadership and will make better decisions. Decisions like attacking the basket every time until Boston challenges him and makes him give it up instead of settling for the jump shot. I have no doubt he will do these things in time and when he does, with the shooters we have, that will make us lethal.

Go ahead and rain on my parade fundamentallysound.

Although you are probably right on the money with the Gordon not coming back thing. I think we’ll still be pretty good. As Rose grows, this team can do nothing but get better. But let me tell you what will sting. If Gordon ends up going somewhere and becoming a major cog on a contender. That will sting. And what will sting even worse is if we get into a close game with the team he’s on……and Gordon kills the Bulls down the stretch (and then does the I got balls grab/dance…LOL)
