That was not a good game.....
It was an exciting finish, but the game itself was painful to watch. The Bulls kept killing themselves. Missed Free Throws. Turning over the ball a ton in the 3rd quarter. Stupid fouls. It was frustrating to watch. The Celtics were playing awful and the Bulls still couldn’t close them out. This game never should have been close or gone to overtime.
That said. I feel better about their chances after this game. Paul Pierce has obviously checked out of the playoffs. Doc Rivers never should have said that KG was out for the playoffs because I think that crushed Paul Pierce’s spirit. He seems really uninterested. I never thought I would WANT the Celtics to give the ball to Pierce. So basically the Bulls are playing against Rondo and Allen.
The games in this series are going to be close more than they will be a blowout. And it’s great to see the Bulls come through in clutch situations (Free throws aside). That is an advantage I would’ve given the Celtics with their experience. And I actually saw a great coaching defensive strategy from Vinny D. Finally! Hey, let’s trap Rondo. Front the big man on the pick and roll and trap Rondo. Let Perkins get the ball out at 17 feet. Maybe it wasn’t a great move so much as a logical coaching strategy that Vinny finally figured out.
Some side notes from this game. Tyrus needs to balance confidence from cockiness. Confidence is shooting a set up jumper from 14-16 feet. Cockiness is doing a spin move fade away jumper. Confidence is going to the line when the team has fouled you and knocking down free throws. Cockiness is holding on to the ball at the end of the game because you want to be THE MAN who hits the clutch free throws. If that situation happens again and Thomas doesn’t look for Salmons or Rose to give the ball to. I’m going to break my TV.
Also, I only trust Salmons and Rose on the FT line with the game on the line. Unless Ben Gordon starts shooting his free throws from the three point line…..while fading away.

Hinrich's defense on Pierce
was phenomenal today. If not for the missed free throws, I’d think he’s the player of the game. Overall, the defensive adjustments today seemed far and away better than before. And Ben Gordon is a BAMF.

I am not a Kirk apologist or fanboy, but I am sometimes bothered by the criticism he gets round these parts. Not his fault Pax gave him a big contract… But he really showed his value today; great D on a taller star player and showed some poise throughout. He is a real luxury coming off the bench.

I’m just gonna that the Bulls offense is putrid and they can win some games in spite of it thanks to Rose and Gordon. I realize this isn’t news to anybody here, but every possession was a disaster. They managed to salvage enough to win, but man, this is hard to watch.

Brad was in a vortex of suck and still somehow had a good +/- when we checked right then. We predicted someone after the game would say he must have had a good game based on that. In actuality Miller has the unfortunate habit of doing three or four sucky things in a row that really hurt us. Fumble a rebound, miss a shot, stupid foul, flub a pass…and he just gets madder and madder. For him it usually happens all in a row which is why it hurts so much more than just the occasional bone-headed play.

So it’s not just one game. I’m not using this data to make any grand proclamations about how great Miller is. I’m just saying that it’s AWFULLY difficult to place any real blame on him (again, goonish and petulant behavior aside) in the face of the data.

because he’s racking that up at the end of 1st qtr/early 2nd when boston turns to their bench. when we have kirk and miller in with 3 starters, they have their bench guys— and every single one of them is terrible— in with 2 or 3 starters.

Then that’s a great response to the issue. But while it’s possible that a disproportionate number of his minutes come when Rondo/Allen/Pierce/Perkins are on the bench, I find it hard to believe that it would reconcile the entire difference between his on-court production and that of Noah and Thomas.

Miller's goonish toughness is needed
The Celtics would always intimidate the Bulls before Miller showed up. Granted KG being out has helped. But Miller has definitely toughened up Tyrus and Noah. With Miller it is about the intangibles that he brings to the team.

The starting lineup as a group is -24 in 42:39 through the first 3 games
And those 5 guys have the worst +/- numbers. That just tells me our starters aren’t as good as theirs overall, combined with the Bulls propensity to start halves slowly. And of course, the Game 3 blowout didn’t help.

that’s the true story of the +/- in this series. boston’s bench is fucking terrible, and in every game (game 3 shitshow excluded) when we brought in kirk and miller at the end of the 1st and in the 2nd, boston is countering by playing guys like marbury, house, mikki moore, scalabrine, tony allen, etc. we have a 7 man rotation, so our two bench guys (who are both pretty good) are playing with 3 starters, while on the other side they have 2-3 absolutely atrocious bench players in with 2-3 starters. that’s why you can’t just look at raw +/-; we’ve done well with miller on the court because he’s usually out there against boston’s awful bench.

Four games might be too small a sample to gain insight from. But since he’s been on the Bulls, Miller’s had a net plusminus of +241. Tyrus was -333 for the season. I think there’s a reason behind it.

Besides, you can’t knock Miller’s opponents without knocking Tyrus’ and Noah’s – it’s just those 3 at PF/C, so if Miller’s playing against an opponent bench, so are one of the other two.

was at the game...
it was the best crowds of the season. Almost everyone wore red… People were chanting Bull Shit when the calls sucked…. We were on our feat the whole overtime and at numerous points throughout the game… People around us all knew basketball and were talking about player rotations (or lack thereof), VDN, etc…. Overall the atmosphere was electric! My season tickets are in the 300’s,. but I didn’t buy the playoff tickets for my seats and instead we were sitting in the 100 level.

Thursday night crowd did the best they could...
I was there. Lots and lots of red. Deafening roars early on…but when the home team gets completely clobbered not much the fans can do.

they also did the bullshit chant in the garden in game 2 at one point, i was at that one, they also had a noah sucks chant which was pretty amusing.

He had his legs undercut during a layup
and landed head first without any body absorption. If he was Rondo they would have carried him out to the locker room. As it was he split the free throws and finished the game ok. Looked pretty bad though.

I didn’t watch that closely on the replays….
But I’m mostly worried abotu his back and hamstring. We need BG in this series, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce cannot consistently guard him, and contrary to public opinion, BG’s been doing a helluva job on Ray Allen (Allen’s had a lot of points when he’s been switched against Rose, and BG’s faught through a billion screens….it’s only when the screens involve a complete uncalled hold by Glen Davis, that Ray’s been hitting….but overall BG’s d is coming through.
Ok so Vinny seems to have the X's down.....now he needs to learn the O's.
There were a couple
of times yesterday when he fought through the screens and the ball was still in play that he just stood and watched instead of trying to help his teammates. The announcers mentioned it each time.
It has been mentioned elsewhere
that they were actually running switches so Gordon was no longer on that guy and he wouldn’t have to run through picks (which wasn’t working for us well anyway). Don’t pay attention to the announcers. They also said Miller punched Davis when he didn’t. He was running through picks earlier in the game but not so much in the second half. Watching the second half you saw BG guarding Allen less in those situations the picks were used. Of course the switching isn’t a great idea because Davis was bear hugging Noah and not allowing our guys to cover like Allen as they would have otherwise, but our guys were not pushing through picks very well either. What can you do?

That it’s Ray Frickin Allen, a guy who had been one of the least appreciated all stars/super stars in this league before last year, constantly getting voted into the all star games by the coaches, yet for a time being in the same league as the top premier SG’s (he’s still very good, and probably the most consistent shooter the league has seen at least in the last 25 years)….

You could tell it was bothering him
because he was brutal on defense. But if he can continue to score at a high rate, we should be in decent shape still.

If he heard something it could be this:

Didn't you see the
black wrap he had on his thigh after he said he heard it pop? They showed him on the bench during a time out pulling on the wrap. I think this is why he was riding the bike when he was out, trying to loosen it up.
I was mostly making snarky comments about his Tour de France hopes

What an unbullievablabe game!!
I was there and it was truly crazy! This was like a championship fight. I have never, ever seen BG as intense as he was in the overtimes. He was too fired up and had Salmons wide open once when he tried to win it all by himself. If he is hurt you never would have known it. Tyrus was taking crazy shots and was also too hyped up. Ray Allen was on fire. Salmons did a terrific job on Pierce. I thought Hinrich was going to shoot himself when he missed that free throw. Derrick was absolutely terrific. I am totally hoarse from screaming and exhausted from the tension of the game. Ladies and gentlemen – this was fun!!
