Not to be a yfBB Debbie Downer, but Leon Powe only played 8 minutes last night, and they still out-rebounded the Bulls very easily.

I would still think

in a 7 game series this will play into effect with the rotation and the bench. Also if we can get their bigs into foul trouble a good coach would take advantage of it…… but we don’t have a good coach…… I can see the Celtics going small because of foul trouble and VDN making a counter move by also going small because of the “matchups” :(

Heh, remember last time they went to a 5 guarde lineup when we played in the regular season?

They had 5 guards out with Pierce at center. Vinny kept Brad Miller in and we killed them on the boards. Maybe we can do it again.

Kelly Dwyer

On yahoo made a good point about the rebounding thing. Rondo is the one killing the Bulls (not just his rebounds) due to his penetration. He breaks down the Bulls defense, they get out of position (TT goes for the block, and Noah occasionally) and all of a sudden the Celts are there for numerous off rebounds. I think the rebounding issue all starts with stopping Rondo. On the defensive rebounding side, someone needs to box that guy out (or at least twist his other ankle and slow him down). But the Bulls are bad of def boards anyway, so I don’t expect much to change there.

Not sure how Powe being out will hurt them, but I know it will at east hurt their depth. 4th quarters will hopefully be easier to win now. Or maybe KG will be forced to pull the Willis Reed moment and suit up…. uh oh

I was going to comment on Rondo's 7 rebounds last night

But that was more Rose’s problem, and he gets free passes since he’s awesome

by NittanyCub on Apr 21, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

All you have to do is put a body on Rondo

Most of his boards come from the fact that his opponent never puts a body on him. He’s 6’1 for crissakes. Just box him out wherever he is. He’ll get no rebounds.

We had problems like this all year long. Noah has to be more focused on opponents free throw attempts. He misses way too many assignments from half assing it to get the missed free throw.

by NBA Observer on Apr 21, 2009 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

His arms are extremely long. Wingspan and leaping ability and lower body strength matter a lot more than

his 6’1" height, man. Come on. How many more times do we have to have these same discussions?

Not to be harsh...

But the Bulls have failed to take advantage of the C’s injuries.
If Rondo is on one gimpy leg we should have the foresight to drive at him. And if their frontcourt is thin, we should have the good sense to go at them physically. That means more Tyrus in the game to force Baby to move around the court and high pick and rolls.
I hope Vinny finally turns to his vaunted corps of assistant coaches and game-plans for this one. I’m not taking bets, though.

Exactly

After Rondo got hurt the obvious thing to do was for Rose to go at him, didnt happen. Even Doug Collins made a comment how he thought they’d have Rose go right at Rondo. But no, no coaching over here!

"Go at them physically"

Until Gordon started playing on-fire NBA Jam in the fourth quarter, we were consistently taking it to the hoop. Just look at the free throw differential through three quarters to see how physically we were playing. We were taking it to them, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing we’re not doing is posting people up, but that’s not really our strength (and probably wouldn’t get more foul calls anyway). I think we’ve been doing everything possible to take advantage of KG’s absence in the middle.

Celtics can't add a player to their roster, right?

I don’t want to be haunted by PJ Brown.

The big wtf of this series to me is Tyrus losing the battle with Big Baby. Tyrus is supposed to be defensive stud. And yeah, he’s been a great help defender, but Big Baby’s averaging 22ppg on 50% shooting. He’s made up for Garnett completely on the offensive end.

We're getting killed at the 4

Thomas has been a non-factor in doing what he’s shown he can do all year. GET TO THE FREAKING LINE.

Attack the rim. Roll off screens. Where the hell is the coaching? Give orders. This isn’t a democracy. Go to the rim or go home.

you do...

i mean, if it’s between double teaming bb or pierce, i’d toss a body at pierce. let bb shoot all not long. i think that yesterday is the best we’re going to see out of him. we need to worry more about getting boards, especially on the helping side. we lost more goddamn rebounds off of blocks than i have ever seen in my life.

I agree. Let big baby keep shooting.

That can’t happen every game.

But the Bulls need to attack the Celtic bigs early on in game three and four. Get them in foul trouble or just plain wear them out. Rose and BG need to drive the rim, catch the bigs on screen switches and make them chase our little guys one-on-one (since that is the offensive ‘plan’ anyway).

"Remember, I'm Italian".

by BCs71 on Apr 21, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Davis hasn't been that great of a jumpshooter though

His last 10 games of the regular season, Davis shot 21/60 from 2pt jumpshots. In the playoffs:

Gm1: 3/7
Gm2: 5/13

That’s 8/20, or 40%. That’s better than he normally does, but barely (7/20 would’ve been the exact same). The bigger problem is his inside shots, he’s 10/16 overall.

by YaoPau on Apr 21, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's his shooting percentage

on his wide open attempts where he’s been set up to take the shot?

I don’t know the exact figure, but I’ll guess it’s 60% in this series. He’s making the shots where he’s setting the screen and leaking out when two defenders follow the ball.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Apr 21, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Davis is a career .456 % shooter

Last year, in the playoffs, he shot .412% I highly, highly doubt he can maintain the .500 FG% shooting he has. Glen Davis freakin’ sucks, he’s Michael Sweetney if Michael Sweetney only ate 5 double quarter pounders a day.

Let him take those jumpers. Honestly, let him take it.

by NittanyCub on Apr 21, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sad about Leon Powe though

He screwed up that knee back in high school and needed reconstructive surgery on it. He then needed a second major surgery after his freshman season at Cal, and I remember scouts wondering about how it would hold up pre-draft. His injuring it again could be devastating for a player I found easy to root for.

No Leon Powe, hmmm… you know what this means, the return of Tim Thomas!

by YaoPau on Apr 21, 2009 12:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I could see a case for timmy playing

Unfortunately.
Tim plays away from the basket — and if he draws the Celtic bigs from the hoop then hopefully the Bulls can catch a few more offensive rebounds.
But he is such a defensive liability, I hate to see him eneter the game every damn time

I wanted to punch Powe in the face after game one.

He is the biggest fakey faker ever. Celtics fans probably love all the “offensive fouls” he draws . . . and they have to be the only ones. I feel bad for the guy, and I wasn’t wishing injury on him, but he was a potential x-factor with his athleticism and heads-up defensive positioning (with well-timed flops only one aspect of it), and I’m glad he won’t be playing anymore in this series.

The Celtics were dog shit ONE YEAR before they won a title

You can’t just break down a team by saying “they suck” or “they’re mediocre, which sucks” it all depends on the outlook of the team. Although I do know that you are not very positive on the outlook because of management (right?).

It would REALLY suck if we had a mediocre team like the Bucks or Sixers or something. At least this team has tons of upside. Every great team/player had to take their lumps at some point, hopefully that’s what we’re going through right now.

Different players, different coaches, etc. It’s also likely that the Bulls WANTED him to take those shots and he just made them, much like Big Baby last night. You want Fat Boy taking those jumpers. If he makes them, you tip your cap, but that’s one of the worst possible looks the C’s can get.

Fire Vinny.

seriously

especially when kidd had a personal vendetta against our coach. :) i was going to make a very similar point.

We do make Mikki look great

I don’t know how but he always does seem to have good games against us.

Can you believe it

The Bulls are actually the favorite to win this series. ESPN had a poll question who you think will win the series. All of the nation except New England picked the Bulls convincingly.

That could be a bad thing for the Bulls, but it still is amazing.

it's kinda funny

right now the poll is which point guard has been the most impressive, with the choices being billups, parker, rondo, rose, and williams.

the whole country says derrick, other than all of new england and kentucky (random) that says rajon, colorado, wyoming, new orleans, and michigan say billups (funny that the EX piston gets votes from michigan), and utah says dwill (who only got 3% of the total vote, even less than tony parker who didn’t get a majority anywhere). everywhere derrick wasn’t voted first he was 2nd except in vermont where he was a close 3rd.

interesting esp since derrick wasn’t that impressive in game 2.

he still made some great plays

don’t get me wrong, i got to see ‘em in person. ;) but he wasn’t 36 pts and 11 assists impressive. :D

that

and rondo had a triple double in last nights game – i wouldn’t blame people for voting for the guy in this poll.

Powe out is

huge. Has to be the biggest problem “big” Boston has (after KG, OK), when he’s right/healthy.

Not at all comfortable with front runner/favorite status with this team! While it would be so very sweet to get the next two, I have a funny feeling it won’t go that way….

I don't wish injuries on anyone

Except for that fat jackass Kendrick Perkins. Fuck him.

agreed.

what pisses me off about him, is that w/o the ‘big three’ and rondo, this guy is a useless mug. and he grimaces and snarls and acts like a big dog because he has that safety net. i’ve always had a strong distaste for guys like that…

Yeah, without the big three and Rondo he's useless.

That’s because the big three and Rondo are the other 4 starters.

You can’t say someone is useless when FOUR others are not there :‘) that’s just ridiculous :D Who’d you play? Starbury at point, House beside him, BBD and Scal?

Of course he’s useless without the big 4 _ lmao!

honestly...

i don’t care if i have to hear about the celt’s losing half of their players to injuries for the rest of the year if it means we get to the second round. i am confident that the bulls can beat either the magic or the sixers…maybe i’m crazy, and i know matt’s gonna disagree with me, but they’re playing some solid ball right now.

They're playing

hella good defense by their standards now. Best all year and at just the right time. If it continues, they could win the next two, and they might not be so close.

They’re making me think “crazy” too!

After that, we'd just have to beat the Cavs and the Lakers.

The trophy is so close!

(Honestly, though, I agree with you, and I think the farther we go this year the more Derrick and Tyrus and Noah will be motivated next year, from the get-go.)
