Hey Del Harris
you’re an assistant coach of the Chicago Bulls. You can see Brad Miller is fucking dead tired, how about mentioning something before tomorrow that Tyrus Thomas is sitting on your bench ready to jump around and block some fucking shots and rebound the motherfucking ball. For chrissakes please just for old times sake act like a coach!

momentum is overrated. If the Bulls lock down the defensive boards they will win this series.
by Basketball Smurf on Apr 20, 2009 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions
That's the game right there.
Yeah, it’s frustrating that Tyrus isn’t out there, but let’s be clear on this – T2 hasn’t been rebounding for shit. Six, then four rebounds in a playoff game is just awful out of your power forward. Noah too – he was manhandled tonight. They’re just weren’t strong enough, and we weren’t getting out in transition to use their speed and quickness to offset what they lack in bulk.
We lost the game because of second chance points. The good news is, it’s correctable. Everybody – Derrick, BG, John Salmons – has to crash the defensive glass like madmen. That’s the only way we can offset our lack of size down low.
You can’t run if you can’t rebound. And if we can’t run, we ain’t gonna win this series.

Vinny, you suck!!
Vinny, you don’t know how to manage timeouts and you didn’t play Tyrus Thomas at the end of the game despite the fact that he proved himself in game 1.
By the way, we better pay Ben Gordon whatever the hell he wants.
Hell, TT proved himself in THIS GAME

Yeah. Did the retard take out one of his best rebounders JUST BECAUSE the Bulls kept
not being able to rebound Tyrus’s blocks? WTF is the logic in that when you have a lead and Miller’s on life support.
And not just on any life support.
But on CRYOGENIC LIFE SUPPORT.

Well, I was screaming for TT over Brad too when Brad kept falling over and losing the ball.
But Brad had 9 rebounds and TT had 4. Brad was +19 in plus/minus and TT was -21. I’m not saying that TT shouldn’t have been in there, he should have. But he wasn’t exactly stopping the Celts from getting 2 or 3 extra shots on every possession.
The Bulls should get a physical day off tomorrow.

What about the Salmons 3 they waved off?

by Granny Waiters on Apr 20, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions
I was just being a smart-ass, obviously.
There were plenty of individual plays/calls that could have made a difference of a few points, but you get those in every close loss. While it’s highly irritating when refs screw things up and it hurts the team, the Bulls had ample opportunity to overcome them, which is easily seen in the fact that the Bulls were up late in the game in spite of that 3 and the continuation they gave PP at the end of the half.
I find those incredibly irritating at the moment, but overall the two things that stick coming out of the game are the fact that Vinny did not save a TO yet again and the team was horrible on the boards.
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
The only good news I can muster is that luck played a big role in their win today.
A lot of their second chance opportunities were just straight up lucky. Add to that Rose’s 2 early fouls that kept him from getting into rhythm.
Next game will be a good one. Those of you lucky enough to be there better let the Celts have it.
I agree with that.

Reality
We are still the team we have always been and VDN is still our coach. But on top of that the Celtics are not what they’ve always been. Both games at their home court being close and Rose with foul trouble in the first half we still have a good chance of moving on. Remember our home court has helped us this season.

by aznsensation on Apr 20, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Why is that?
We did get out-rebounded badly. That SHOULD be easily fixed. They don’t even have simple fundamentals for bocking out. Like Noah walking towards the basket insteasd of backing out to block out Porkins. The rebound flies over the arms of Noah and straight to Pork. No push even.
Seriously.
For our next two days off we should only work on boxing out and rebounding. Giving up 21 offensive rebounds is ridiculous!
i dont blame them all that much for the rebounding
they were getting fouled. a lot of that will (hopefully) get called in the UC

I don’t worry the stats so much, just watch the game. All Celts were able to push all Bulls under the basket. Like they were Duncan (or Garnett?).
My point is that, although I would’ve played TT too, I completely disagree that he would’ve helped with what “cost” the game.
Now I have to check the box, damn!

no we played hard...but they played harder...they went after all the rebounds
by aznsensation on Apr 20, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
they pushed and shoved their way to the rebounds
usually called fouls. tonight they werent for some reason
They had a lot of uncalled fouls on the rebounding.
And got some lucky.
And a lot were blocks that went back to the Celtics.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
And the blocks thing, yeah, it'd be better if Thomas blocked it to his teammates...
…but it still means that no shot was taken, except Boston gets a rebound.
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
if Big Baby stops making jumpshots and the Bulls actually gather some of those blocked shots
they’d be in bidness.
But the counter is that Pierce is probably going to wake up at some point this series. Kudos to Fish for keeping him under wraps thus far. Non-kudos to Fish for some really selfish play on the offensive end.
Fire Vinny.
by fundamentallysound on Apr 20, 2009 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, a lot of their o-rebounds were just good positioning
Miller and Noah were getting shit on. If only the Bulls had someone who could jump high to grab these said defensive rebounds for them. Shit, if only there was someone like that on this team.
The Ray Allen over Brad Miller rebound/jump ball should have sort of been the sign?
People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett
the Bulls are just not a good defensive rebounding team
I think they could’ve had a better chance if the corpse of Brad Miller wasn’t out there for the final minutes, but still…
Also, Luol Deng would’ve helped in that area. ::ducks morons flinging poo::

ive actually been fine with VDN's hinrich usage
he’s been good on pierce in small chunks because he’s such a different type of defender than salmons, and VDN hasn’t played him too much. and i like the way hinrich has played in his limited minutes too. without deng we almost have to give hinrich a few minutes at the 3, and he’s been fine in those few mins there. the real problem, as been covered ad nauseam, is the brad miller experience
Celtics go small alot, so Hinrich at the 3 isn't that big of an issue

i didnt come on here throughout the game but wow...what a game.... as a fan of basketball, it was just straight up incredible...
as a fan of the bulls, it was a heartbreak. I understand the a lot of people here think it was vinny who fucked us over once again.i agree but not because he made so many mistakes throughout the game, cause i think he didnt. but one thing that obviously needs some help is the timeout management. two games in a role without a TO remaining at the end must be pinned on someone, and that someone is vinny. so i do blame vinny for that aspect of the game. but thats the only thing i blame on him, because, well, we are competing very good against the defending champs. and coaching has a lot to do with it. as a fan of the bulls, i hate seeing mistakes, especially from the coach, but maybe we should start giving some credit where credit is due……….now go ahead and crucify me if you’d like………
Actually,
one play I remember was one of the jump ball calls on a (Noah?) tie-up. The refs not only didn’t call a foul, they reset the 24 second clock, and still charged the time out the player called! Then they (he, really) threw the ball up towards the Celts’ big on the jump. :(

The only one of the four factors that they lost was the OReb%. Celtics gathered 42.9% of their misses, whereas the Bulls only grabbed 21.6% of their misses.
That’s the entire difference between winning and losing. The Bulls either dominated or slightly edged the C’s in every other category, and because they got hammered on the boards, they lost the game.

O Boards and 2nd chance points.
We had 2 7 footers out there and they had Perkins, but they still got all the boards.
You gotta know HOW to block out, though
That’s coaching
Rondo grabbed 7 offensive rebounds and 12 total boards.
Perkins grabbed 7 offensive rebounds as well.
Those were the big offensive rebounders for the Cs. Those are on Rose and Noah / Brad. It would have been nice if Vinny brought Tyrus back. Sigh.

He’s short for the position he’d play. He’s just strong and wide. Want another Mike Sweetney?
You realize the only reason Kendrick Perkins is a good rebounder
Is because he’s built like a Mack truck. He has no lift whatsoever, yet constantly gets better positioning against the more athletic and quicker Noah. Blair is exactly what the Bulls need off the bench.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

when in college, the idiot UKentucky coach didn't know how to use Rondo.
It’s why he fell to the later 1st round in the draft. But most scouts knew he had the tools and talent….but not to be THIS good anyway, but NBA starting caliber.

I think he's a good No. 2 and Perkins is a good No. 4.
If they can get someone better than Rondo after Garnett, Allen and Pierce go, they can still be really, really good.

I dunno
He’s been playing like this alot of times this season. Deferring to teammates and not understanding that he IS our offensive system.
It's part of why his season-long numbers aren't that great.

i dont really blame miller
i think he’s a good complement to tyrus and noah. but the key word is complement; he should play 24 mins and get out of the way. 36 mins and playing over tyrus down the stretch just shouldnt happen
Brad has playoff experience
He’d had championship experience if the Lakers didn’t screw job the Kings years ago.
He has the biggest expiring contract in the league next year...
…despite being valuable on the court, his contract is great for the 2010 run.
And he is a great fit for this team, he just needs to be spelled more quickly
his legs expired already ( a long time ago)
someone tell VDN this is the post season. Miller in slow motion doesn’t work when teams are fighting more to win..
man up!
If we only had Larry Hughes to shoot that ball with 3 seconds left in the game
You know, like how he did it against the Jazz earlier in the season.
LOADS OF SARCASM. DON"T FLAME. OKAY FLAME A LITTLE (because I secretly loved when he hit that shot… but nothing else he did)
Brad Miller has had some crappy finishes this series
But you all don’t seriously think Tyrus should always be in the game over Brad do you? Brad’s had some sucky moments, but TT & Noah weigh less than Big Baby’s left nut. And although i think athleticism is the way to beat the Celts, in the playoffs you also need half-court execution, and having Brad in w/ Rose has led to some good half-court execution these past few months.
It's the 4th quarter Brad minutes that are driving us all bananas. He's tired at the end and it shows.
Vinny keeps running him into the ground and Brad looks worse and worse as the game goes on. Play him his 25-30 minutes, but for chrissakes give Tyrus the last 8 minutes of the game.
Fire Vinny.

Brad Miller is more of a coach than a player for the Bulls
Like we need another one.
One thing, why do we keep paying Pete Myers year after year after year. This guy has obviously failed at his job which is to develop big men. It was not until Brad Miller arrived, that Noah and Thomas really started to flourish.
So let’s give VDN a going away present—-Pete Myers.
just got back from the game, i'll post some comments in the post game thread, this thread is too damn long lol.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
On Noah's technical
What did Joakim say? I am sure I missed this question on the other two game threads (I looked and didn’t see it), but it sure looked on TV that Noah said nothing; he just looked at Perkins, who kept yapping. (sidebar: Perkins is one of the biggest tools in the league). Am I right to say that the T was a joke?
it was a joke
shoulda been no T or a double on perk and noah
and there was a poll earlier this year among players and Perk was voted most hated player in the league
He yelled out after he blocked Perkins (or whoever it was)
He yelled out something I can’t remember, but it was audible on the TNT broadcast (something along the lines of “take that sh*t” or something. He simply taunted after a block. Garnett should’ve been tossed every time the camera showed him (he says motherf**ker enough to make sailors blush)
yea i think he said
“gimme that shit” always a classic i just stuffed your ass taunt
Garnett
is also known for, shall we say, “picking his fights”. It doesn’t surprise me at all that he is trash talking a couple of young bigs when he can’t even get in the game. That’s his style. (Now, if we had Duncan or Shaq… he would be quiet!)

Someone needs to think of naming a new position for Tyrus : "Power small" ?
Like Scottie was a point forward.

I know tyrus only had 4 rebounds
but brad miller, although a better rebounder, hurts us as a team if used for long stretches. Hes too slow and cant show hard on the pick and roll. Also, he cant really rotate fast enough defensively which result in him or someone else being out of position. Thus, despite tyrus’s lack of rebounds, players are in better position to rebound when hes on the floor with noah. I dont know if I presented that thought clearly enough, but I think I made the point.

Pierce gas grabbing and either ripping or shoving at Salmon's jersey each of the last 6 or so offensive posessions
Still Salmons is really doing a nice job checking him
Pierce looked tired. He’s not used to being pushed on both sides of the court since attention paid to Garnett usually helps him get open at times. Without KG, and with Salmons riding him, Pierce looks like nothing special.
the rebounding statistics are slightly misleading in this game, it was more even if you factor in
that the Bulls had FOURTEEN BLOCKS as a team.
Problem was, Boston was rebounding those blocks better. Bulls still had huge problems blocking out, but it wasn’t as horrible as just being outrebounded defensively.
(boston had 6 blocks)
by KentuckyBullsFan on Apr 20, 2009 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah, cause ty knocked a few of those out of bounds
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
The Bulls rarely gather the ball after blocks.
Tyrus either throws them out of bounds or slams them down back to the offense. Noah usually just tips them back to the shooter or short to a man under the hoop for an easy 2.
ty has been improving a lot in this aspect though
but noah def has to learn to work to get his blocks away from the opposing team. a bunch of them did more harm than good.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
Those were
incredible plays! Such a shame to waste stuff like that and BG’s great game…

yeah, i know, i was there
the rose save was awesome.
but i mean for instance ty’s block at the end of the 3rd quarter, it was at the buzzer so he could just shove it out of bounds. that block kicked ass.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
You are right though
I do appreciate when Tyrus says it is his fault for putting too much into a block (that shows maturity)
Two (I think unique points)
1) None of our bigs set good screens. Allen got textbook screens and freed himself from Gordon to get good looks)
2) Gordon couldn’t stay with Allen. He was getting screened the entire fourth and he changed nothing (could be a coaching lack of move, could be that Gordon couldn’t fight through them)
they also rotated out onto bg to force difficult shots
we made NO defensive adjustments…incredibly frustrated
by rosefromconcrete on Apr 20, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions
every screen boston sets is illegal
those little fucking hipchecks drive me crazy. and on the game winning shot ray got a couple of the most illegal screens ive ever seen set for him
BG
Stayed with Allen fine. He destroyed Ray All night long. I know Ray hit the last shot, but BG’s defense was solid. THe last call they purposely put Noah on Allen for Noah’s length, and Ray did what superstars do.
Vinny’s really opening my eyes so far. I know Doc mostly sucks and lucked into this team, but Vinny’s strategy (let Rondo shoot and let Glen Davis and Kendrick Perkins try to beat us, is a great strategy. Unfortunately both Davis and Perkins had a taste of home court tonight. I don’t think they’ll keep that up. e’ve stopped Pierce from being the superstar he is (how good is John Salmons? Continues to surprise….Glenn Davis won’t do that again. Tyrus was fantastic tonight, but suffered too much from the Tyson Chandler syndrome, getting fantastic blocks that he either blocked out of bounds or blocked to a Celtic…..
We’ll see….would have loved a win, we were the better team again, but you have to be encouraged with this one.
Kirk had a better O game tonight, but what was lost last game was how absolutely fantastic his D was…..
4-9-09: Ok, so Vinny's not great, but maybe he has a future as an assistant coach.
Unlike
most here, I’m impressed with what Salmons has done too. Makes Pierce run on D too.

His shot selection is again poor, but he at least attacked the hoop more
Pierce really looks gassed, he drove to the hoop easily 4-5 times in the final quarter and then just flopped for calls. The refs thankfully didn’t buy into his act.

defensive rebounding was the main problem
they got 21 offensive boards, and outrebounded us by 14. we get any of those rebounds at the end of the game, and it’s probably over.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
We should have pushed and hung onto shirts
as much as they did then. Because that is how they were getting rebounds. Somehow I don’t think we would have gotten away with it that much.

I don't agree with the overrated passer comment
I do agree he tries threading the needle too much. He does lose the ball a lot when he is looking for calls, but so does Gordon, Noah, and Tyrus.
part of being a good passer is knowing when to make a pass
Just because someone is capable of making great passes, but always turns it over trying to do so, does not mean they are a great passer.

Also, Vinny del Negro better start hamming it up with the refs
It’s clear Doc Rivers was all over the officials at halftime. The Celtics came out early and were able to commit some pretty tough fouls without any repercussions. Joakim Noah was called for the most unccessary technical foul ever. This loss wasn’t on the refs, but it’s pretty ridiculous how different both halves were in terms of playing style. Both teams should not have to bitch and moan to get to the foul line, it should just be a given…if you’re hit, go to the line.

Why didn't that 3 at the end of the second quarter count?
It went in, and was out of his hand with 1 second left on the shot clock. They blew it off, but it looked like it needed a second look to me.
These are the kind of mistakes that make me think the NBA is the WWE.
it didn't go in.
i was sitting right by the basket at the time. ;) it bricked off the front of the rim and fell straight down.
KC actually said:
Further review: TV replays showed a deceiving angle, leading some to believe John Salmons’ three-pointer swished through near the end of the third quarter. Instead, officials properly called an air ball and 24-second shot clock violation.
it didn’t look like an airball to me (and looked like he got it off in time), and i was on that side of the court, but i guess it didn’t actually draw iron.
"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"
The ball actually
hit the net making it look as though it went in. I think seeing the net move make people think it went in.
How is that even...
physically possible? I’ve never seen the net move like that in my basketball life without going in. That’s the weirdest thing.
It hit the net just
below the rim giving the net the look of a swooshed basket. I thought it went in too until they showed the replay.
How in the heck does Joakim Noah get called...
for a foul after being pushed in the back? Just let that go. The NBA is so rigged.
How about a box out?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?
Or anticipation of where the miss is going. I’d expect Miller to be able to do this since he’s experienced.
2 more defensive rebounds so that Boston didn’t get an offensive put back would have won them the game.
