Oh boy
I’ve used personal observation to inform most of these picks — I’ve seen every team play between eight and 12 times start to finish on the tube and have caught nearly all of them in person as well.

I don't doubt

that Hollinger watches way way more basketball than I do.

Oh, I agree with you

But after six months of hearing “other experts don’t know, PER knows” when discussing who’s the MVP, when it comes to the 50% of the game that’s defense, he supports his article with “personal observation”.

He also supported it with defensive adjusted plus-minus, but because of APM's

noisiness, he supplemented it with personal observation, which is really the best way to do it. It’s all opinion, really, as we still don’t have perfect data for this stuff (defense).

Fire Vinny.

I'm sure he watches alot more basketball then us

It is his job. But I don’t believe he’s really watched any Bulls game, based on his love for Kirk’s defensive talents. Maybe 2-3 years ago Hinrich was a shut down defender, but now-a-days he’s not much better then Rose/Gordon, IMO.

1. I don't see Hollinger labelling him a 'shut-down' defender

He calls him one of the league’s better perimeter defenders. Considering the fact that he guards 3 different positions on the court, I’m ok with that.

2. He’s a significantly better defender than Rose. That’s not meant to be a knock on Rose so much as it is just factual.
