I'm a huge Hollinger fan, but seriously? It should be unanimous.

Hollinger

Will pick Lopez because he is married to his PER. If he chose someone other the top rookie according to his PER, then it would mean that PER is not as accurate of a metric as he states or that other factors are more important.

Now maybe in his heart of hearts he believes Lopez is the ROY, but he also knows that if he were to choose Rose then a lot of people would say, “Why should we care about your PER if you don’t even rely on it for your ROY vote?”

by patagonia on Apr 14, 2009 10:40 AM CDT reply actions

meh.

he can use PER to say that Lopez was the better player this season. And maybe he was.

But it’s about who had the better season, and Rose playing 500 more minutes is significant, and PER doesn’t give Rose credit for that.

PER also is biased towards centers

since it works with efficiency and rebounds a lot. it doesn’t take into consideration the huge responsibility rose had running the team, while brook had the luxury of playing with vince carter and devin harris.

also

i am more concerned over the guy who voted for mayo than the 2 giving votes to lopez. sometimes i think these people stopped watching the games after november.

that wasn't a guy, that was Jemele Hill. She's a woman, and she is TERRIBLE.

Honestly, she might the worst writer on all of ESPN.com and that’s saying something.

Fire Vinny.

ahaha

i didn’t actually look at any of the names who voted, tbh, just scanned through the pics real quick.

He's not "married" to PER in the way you describe, I don't think.

He fully acknowledges that PER is only an offensive metric and uses his own qualitative judgments of defense and intangibles in all of his articles. To the extent that he’s basing all of his offensive analysis on PER, I guess I’d agree with you, but I think if you could ask Hollinger “why Lopez over Rose,” he wouldn’t just say “PER” — he’d also point to Lopez’s block rate and his defensive impact, plus the fact that centers usually take much longer to adjust to the size/speed of the game than guards.

Not that I agree with him in his conclusion (it should definitely be Rose, especially how well Rose has played this past month during the playoff push), but I give him a little more credit in his analytical skills. He’s only ever pimped PER as one among many tools the good basketball analyst should use, their own eyes being another one of the major ones.

by arjoseph on Apr 14, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

He certainly has an argument

Rose is a poor defender, doesn’t get steals or draw a lot of fouls, and his assist rate isn’t spectacular (though it’s probably gone up in this last month). However, I wonder if it was a good thing Lopez wasn’t used more often in New Jersey, as he was able to develop pretty quietly and surprised a lot of teams with his play. Rose was the man early on, and after his amazing November, teams really tried to clamp down on him. I think it’s impressive that Rose endured so many peaks and valleys, yet is still closing the season strongly.

hollinger does go a little overboard with PER

he was trying to argue in his article about his choice for ROY that marc gasol was getting his 2nd place vote because of PER.

he also argued that dwyane wade had the single best finals performance because of PER.

there’s more, but i can’t remember.

he was making cases like lopez is more efficient than rose, which only makes sense because he is a center! and plays with 2 stars. rose was the focus of other people’s defense pretty much from day 1, and he’s been pretty consistent.

I'm surprised

Wade only got 1 MVP vote. I think LBJ is the MVP, but I expected more than 1 vote for D Wade.

by M 80 on Apr 14, 2009 11:34 AM CDT reply actions

Well

It’s ESPN…..take that with a grain of salt. Lebron will win, but I don’t think it’ll be a 17-1 favor…

4-9-09: Ok, so Vinny's not great, but maybe he has a future as an assistant coach.

why? it should be unamious

I don’t get the ‘so and so should be in the conversation’ when talking about who won.

i'm not, honestly

his scoring is the only thing that’s made a jump, and he was already a near 20 ppg scorer last season. his rebounding has actually dropped by over a full rpg and his FG% and 3P% are almost identical.

i really like granger, but there’s a reason he was already rewarded with such a nice contract.

Granger was a beast last year and is a beast this year

since it's ESPN

I didn’t expect the unanimous choice…don’t they want to stir up debate, or at least pimp more guys? I guess I expect less from ESPN, since I’ve heard they usually just tell their analysts to take a side to fake a debate.

by M 80 on Apr 14, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

that's correct

and I get your point. So I guess the better question is who cares what ESPN has to say?

I think it's only one "vote", not points.

If it were points, sure, he’d have some, but if it’s just “Who’s the MVP?” I don’t really get someone should have voted for Wade cuz…

right

i’d assume wade would get the 2nd or 3rd place vote on these people’s ballots.

…and how those results didn’t add up w/ what you expected. So, I shouldn’t tell you what your expectations and such are. Sorry about that.

I was more surprised that nobody voted for Kobe.

Usually there’s at least one Lakers homer who will argue that Kobe is still better than ’Bron, the Lakers are equivalent to the Cavs in record (basically), Kobe has a better supporting cast (to explain the stat disparity), more of a leader, blah blah. I was pleasantly surprised to see him not mentioned, but still surprised.

The two ESPN numbers guys took Brook Lopez. I’m shocked to learn such predictable selections.

I swear

Jemele seems to pick things that she thinks are just contradictory to common belief sometimes. Sometimes shes right like with picking Yao Ming over Howard for a playoff team.
But Mayos main role with Memphis was to score. February his scoring dropped off big to me. I guess he deserves some recognition but does she honestly think hes RotY I wonder.

I wouldn't even be surprised

If I saw someone vote for Ben Gordon for sixth man

by Camry on Apr 14, 2009 4:25 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

i think it was earlier in the season

that someone was talking about him as an early candidate 6th man even though he had already moved into the starting lineup.
