There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

Rose won't get the calls.

Offensive foul,

traveling on Rose’s detached feet for skidding across the floor …
egh, I don’t even want to think about that

And get a few more buckets and hold the refs under too.

The tone has been set and Wade isn’t going to be shut down defensively with the refs on his side. We need to put a bunch of numbers on the board and at least cool some of their players down. One of the best ways of getting a guy off his game is to make him worry about both ends of the floor.

Rose is FAR better right now than Nash was as a rookie...

…and about as good as either Chris Paul or Jason Kidd were as a rooks. Those guys all became great pro PGs. Neither started off that way.

Steve Nash wasn’t as good as Rose is now until about his 5th year in the league. See for yourself.

Nice sample size, man.

I realize game threads are for knee-jerk reactions, but come on. Have you seen this “offense” we run? It’s all ISOs. Assists aren’t going to happen. We don’t even run plays.

The Bulls essentially play an offense like the Warriors

With better passing. Tons of early shots, no consistent ball movement, lots of screens for the guards to get into the paint. You don’t get a lot of assists in that type of environment, regardless of who plays.

Suggestion on how Bulls can catch on fire.

Why don’t the Bulls just fire Vinny and have an instant turnaround?

How can a professionally coached team go an entire quarter without a single assist?
I guess poor coaching could have something to do with it. But what do I know.
Vinny will blame it on a lack of energy and a lack of focus.

I don't think I've got OT in me.

Way too much stress in this game!

Oh, and the Bulls can’t force this to be Derrick’s team by insisting on calling the last shot for him every time – maybe if/when he starts getting the BS star calls, but not yet. Got to go to Ben tonight.

I don't mind if Rose fails

But it’s just dumb coaching. It’s a microcosm of what’s so wrong with this team. Gordon does everything in his power to bring a win, and he doesn’t get the last shot.

If you want to give Rose the last shot, you have to at least get Gordon involved in the play

Gordon was just standing in the corner, so everyone knew Rose was taking that last shot. How about trying to make Miami think?

you dont wanna iso bg on that last shot

but you do want him to try and get open. I like putting the ball in rose’s hands, but why does it have to be an iso with only 1 option??? Its a flawed strategy, yet every team does it. It drives me crazy

by rosefromconcrete on Mar 9, 2009 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

Correct.

You don’t ISO BG. You put Rose in a pick and pop situation with Brad Miller with Gordon spotting on the wing. Since Miller can shoot the high post shot, that keeps the big from following Rose and leaves only the wing to help. That defender has to make a decision. Help on Rose and leave Gordon open or just faceguard Gordon…which would have left Rose in one on one with his defender and I like those odds.

It’s possible (probable?) that Phil diagrams a better play, but I doubt this team executes it. By next year with Phil, yeah I can concede your point. But only well down the road. Phil’s the best.

A fight should break out...Tyrus should first punch the refs, than Vinny. and D Rose should grab a bat and nail the refs who failed to call a foul on his late drive

when he was hacked by O’Niel and than calling an offensive foul when Haslam was in the circle, either call would have given the Bulls the victory.

Did Vinny realize Ben Gordon had 43 points? And Tyrus was ready for bear after he was shafted by the officials, so he sits at the end of the bench.

Coach blew it

No need to call the TO, particularly when you have no ability to draw up successful plays. Bulls had the Heat on their heels. Just play through it. Also, when you have Brad Miller so obviously on empty and Joakim fouled out, you have to go to Tyrus. Why wait? You saw what he did as soon as he got in.

How much more does Reinsdorf need to see of this guy? As a fan, this is getting really demoralizing.

by Stay Chisel on Mar 9, 2009 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

To everyone asking how BG didn't get the ball...

How do you know he wasn’t GOING to? Salmons got stripped at the top of the key as the play was developing. It was a dirty strip that only Wade could get away with.

Did you want BG dribbling the ball at the top of the key? Last time he did that at the end of a game he was stripped by one Dwight Howard.

BG was amazing tonight, but his points came mostly on set-up 3s. You can harp on alot of things, but don’t harp on that.

by smash! on Mar 9, 2009 10:07 PM CDT reply actions

Because you're saying that BG couldve got stripped while Salmons did get stripped.

There’s no would’ve should’ve could’ves if the guy actually did get stripped. Gordon had 43 pts and matched Wade. He should’ve got the shot. Period

I can harp on that

Because Gordon is capable of creating his own shot in that situation, we’ve all seen it before. John Salmons had a nice game, but there’s no reason for him to be controlling the ball when Derrick Rose is in the game, hell even Hinrich was in the game. Horrible play call.

in an area where contact is supposed to be especially closely called...

there’s almost no way the offensive player can come out of that collision with the ball under control…and it would be a foul under almost any scenario except on the road with a few seconds left and with Dwayne Wade being the defender.

To win in that situation in the NBA on the road, you’ve got to set some good screens, and create an open shot….. like what the Heat did in UC last second win with Wade passing to Marion for layup.

Was i hearing things

or did Stacey King predict that the ball would go to Salmons before the final play? After he made the pull-up jumper on the last possession he seemed to imply that he had a mismatch to exploit, presumably on Haslem.

D Wade knows he can gamble just like MJ did and seldom ever get called for reaching in.

Rank has its priveleges, but the refs and Vinny stole this one. They for the second time in a row had a foul to give at the end of the 4th quarter and instead allowed Wade an open look for a 3. This after a timeout which gave Vinny, as I predicted, a chance to come up with a strategery to lose again.

Yes, Salmons got stripped but why not let Kirk handle the ball. He is a better passer and knows how to shield the ball. I thought that was the reason Tyrus was pulled for Hinrich, to give the Bulls more ball control knowing Wade had already had 2 steals in OT.

A few observations now that I have caught my breath
  • This team is significantly better since the trades, despite the last play from Salmons.
  • BG can’t guard Wade. Either can Rose. Or Salmons. No diss on any of them—-nobody in the NBA can this year… It should be a three way MVP race with him or Kobe disappointed (not the two way race that I keep hearing).
  • And despite the strip (and foul) Salmons is going to start in place of either Deng or BG next year.
  • Tyrus sat for so long because he is dumb as a post. He was lucky not to be thrown out. And lucky VDN called a timeout at the end to save him from the travel that would have been called otherwise.
  • This is not a point in VDN’s favor—-despite the fast start, the team did not look prepared for this game.

Does anyone have the stomach to site the games where the Bulls had the last possession with a chance to win the game and blew it, after Vinny called a timeout?

What will it take to get Paxdorf to realize he is a cancer and must be removed to keep this franchise off life support?

If I hadn’t already lost my life savings in the stock market, I would start a collection myself. Maybe if every Bulls fan just contributed a buck or two, we could pay off his salary so Jerry can dump him without worrying about the bottom line impact.

Story of the game:

How Vinny Lost the Game.

1.) Not fouling Wade at the top of the key, iso’d on John Salmons, with NO FUCKING HELP, with, mind you a foul to give. Inexcusably, mind-bogglingly stupid. Just plain stupid.

2.) Continued tendency to run NOTHING but isolations on close and late situations out of timeouts. It is almost comical. Rather than clear everyone out and have Derrick run in the lane and chuck it, he had Salmons do it. Why? Because Salmons had just made a jumer. Hot hand. What sound logic. Once, JUST ONCE, I would LOVE to see some kind of drive and kick designed play (a la Popovich set-us for Roger Mason in San Antonio) or really anything other than the iso for that matter.

Oh yeah. Dwayne Wade is very, very, very good.

Ok, we all need this, some positives from tonight

BG: What more do you need to say about him? He doesn’t care who he plays, what time, what date, he will show up and play hard. The 4th quarter was ridiculous.

Rose: The box score makes it look like he had a bad shooting night, but he got jobbed on at least 5 fouls. He didn’t settle for the jumper that much, attacked the paint a ton. Unfortunately, he didn’t get some calls, and some misses just didn’t bounce his way.

Noah: Again with an underrated, steady performance. Kept the Heat big men off the boards most of the night, even scored in the post a couple of times. Even when Tyrus was loco, Noah played hard.

Salmons: Solid performance, hit some huge shots. Definitely was the anti-Deng when he kept attacking the hoop, getting those and-1 attempts. The last play was miserable, but that’s bad coaching.

They’re still in the 8th seed, and they played their hearts out when everything was going against them. You gotta appreciate their effort, they want the playoffs just as bad as we want it.

Let's look at it this way:

Miami actually has some pretensions of going somewhere the season – yet it took them 2 OTs against an undermanned, sub-.500 Bulls team on their own court to get the win.

They stuck together, kept their heads up – and we’ve seen this team fold on the road. If they keep this game in perspective, it could be a huge step forward to putting a nice run together down the stretch.

Ok....I've had a chance to cool down...

Turnovers and perimeter defense is this team’s achilles heel and will lead me to a heart attack before I’m 40. We traded Thabo, so there’s a major hole to fill unless DRose steps up next year and at least solidifies the D at the point. Kirk’s defense is solid, but we need a 6’5 to 6’7 body who can defend slashing/bigger SGs and SFs. I love how Salmons always seems to produce on offense, but I fear he’s just not the one defensively.

I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight b/c of the turnovers. I just can’t imagine not getting a shot off (even a bad one) when you have the ball with the shot clock turned off. To have it happen twice to the same team is simply unimaginable at this level of basketball. I can handle blow outs, losing at the buzzer, not getting the ball in the end to a guy in the middle of a 40pt night, but to turn the ball over at the end like that… oh F it, I’m otta here.

Rose was 9 for 25, Salmons 10 for 24

Gordon was 14-23 and 8 for 11 on 3’s, 7 of 8 on FT’s. Ironically his only miss from the charity stripe would have won the game if he had converted.
But the question has to be asked …..why wasn’t Ben shooting at the end of the game and OT?

The Thunder have said that their resurgance is primarily due to the LEADERSHIP and defensive intensity that Thabo has brought. They say he is their leader and these wins have been coming after Durant and Green have been injured. Of course, he wasn’t good enough for Vinny who wouldn’t recognize talent if it jumped up and bit him in the crotch. Don’t you think a little bit of Thabo might have gotten the Bulls over the hump tonight but instead we have Roberson and Hunter to fill his spot.

can't blame vinny anymore

His rotations have been pretty good lately, rose played 55 minutes tonight it speaks for itself. Tyrus stunk tonight but those two charges early sucked. Until we get a bosh like post player we’re never getting deep into the playoffs. Wade is good but we made him look better than he is, you need to play off of the guy more his first though is drive all the time. A PITTY WE COULDN’T WIN WHEN GORDON CATCHES FIRE, ALTHOUGH IF NOAH DOESN’T BLOW SEVERAL PUTBACKS WE WIN EASILY, IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

They need to practice end game plays because they had 4 guys around Rose and he had to force up a shot. Do they practice plays for last shots? Doesn’t seem like it.
