Winning is Everything
So okay, the dilemma facing the bulls right now is the impending free agency of Benjamin Gordon. BG had another big game in a big win against the Bucks, to push the Bulls in the eight spot of the conference. Are we going to sign him or not? I have to admit, I am a fan of BG, since the first time i heard his name. First ever rookie sixth man, 15ppg of the bench, game winners, spectacular sniping from downtown, scoring machine, who would not love this guy? He was one of the catalysts that brought back Chicago into respectability.
The biggest consideration, I think John Paxson is going to to think of, is what is Ben going to contribute on winning. Here is a guy who is a proven scorer, although not gifted in height, and a bit liabilty on defense, he can just flat out score. The question is, are you going to win more games with him, or not? Small backcourt partnerships are generally accepted if you are winning. Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas of Detroit, Eric Snow and Allen Iverson in the hay days of Philly. A player is repected if his team is winning. Who was Jason Terry before Dallas? or have you ever noticed that Atlanta was in the League before last year? Nobody gives a damn if you are losing. Eddie Jordan, Sam Mitchell, Scott Skiles are respected coaches, but once they started losing, nobody gave a damn if they brought their respective teams into consecutive playoff appearances. WINNING IN THE NBA, IS IMMORTALITY.
The baby bulls of 05-07 gained the respect of the whole Nba, because they were winning, and in hope to getting back on track, Pax must face a decision, whether or not he will re-sign Ben. I have the confidence that whatever Pax chooses to do, it is for the best of this team, and whats best is WINNING.

Remember that Paxson and Gar Foreman only negotiate contracts.
JR has veto power, and Paxson (if he wants to bring back BG) has to convince JR to take the risk of paying luxury tax for one year if the Bulls can not dump enough salary (e.g. trading Hinrich and 2009 picks for non-guaranteed contracts or to a team with cap room).
Maybe we can (but probably not)?

We have been over this territory many times - but last night triggered a need to revisit
As has been pointed out we cannot sign BG unless we dump salary. The cap is likely to shrink. The good news is that It is very unlikely Gordon is going to get a offer anywhere near what the Bulls offered last year. Because of the economy and teams waiting for 2010 Gordon may only get the MLE. That said I believe Portland and Toronto love Deng. Portland will be under the salary cap next year. If we reach an agreement with Gordon, in July we trade Deng for Batam and Travis Outlaw. I believe that gets us under the cap enough to sign Gordon. Gordon has put himself into a bad position being a free agent in one of the worst economic years. Being confronted with shocking bad offers from other teams will make the Bulls offer, which I assume will be less than what was offered last year, very attractive.

With his history of non-injury,
BG might take the risk of signing a one year contract so he could partake in the 2010 free agent boom.

I am only guessing but I think after two years of not being able to sign a contract he is more motivated to sign a long-term deal.
In 2010 Gordon would have to hope the big names stay with their teams and he is able to catch a break and someone pays him big-time as the door prize for not getting a big name free agent.

In respects to Eric Snow and Joe D
They were very good defenders, in spite of being slightly undersized at the 2 guard. They are both listed as 6’3" just like BG, but if BG is really 6"3" then D Rose must be at least 6" 5".

B.G. is more like 6'1"
Remember these measurements are taken with shoes on.

The point was
that BG is smaller and not even close to being the defender that those two were.

BG is 6 ft. 1 without shoes, Rose 6 ft. 1.5
Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

Rose is on another level of athleticism than BG...
He plays much bigger than he is.

Gordon's gone
Have you seen Salmons? The guy can play
by YaoPau on Mar 7, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
BG is a better shooter and scorer
than Salmons, but I think Salmons is the better basketball player. Salmons is a much better defender, ball handler, and so far seems to be a better passer too. His 3 point shot is not what Gordon’s is but he can finish strong around the basket.
I ilke BG, but I think Salmons is a better fit in the backcourt with DRose.
He also isn’t trying to get 10+mil on his contract (yet)

THE BALL HANDLING!
This has been an area of real improvement for BG this year. Last year it seemed like he was dribbling off his leg three times every night. I am sure that someone will throw out TO numbers that show BG is not an outlier, but in years past it seemed like he had a lot of ball handling flubs in crunch time. Vast improvement this year. Still, this liability is just as bad as defense (which I will also concede is improved this year). I am not a hater. I would love to see BG stay with this team in his ideal role—-the microwave off the bench.

You must not have been watching....
He still has ballhandling issues. This hasn’t changed!

...I think he is working on it...
Like his D, Gordon’s ballhandling is disappointing, but give him credit. It has improved. Not where it needs to be for a guy who wants to be a starter… That’s my issue. I really like Ben—-he’s an incredible scorer and a reasonable guy who has never made waves for this team. But his deficiencies make him a 6th man.

They got the whole respect of the NBA because...........
they were winning??? Wow you must have low expectations. The team sucks this year. They were awful last year. The “Great Bulls” team (LOL) of ’05 lost in 6 games in the first round. Then went on to lose in the 1st round to Miami the next year. In ’07 – the Bulls get passed a banged up Heat team and then lose in the 2nd round. Why would anyone in the NBA care or repect those Bulls teams? They won one playoff series and topped off at 49 wins.

I really dont mind if we lose gordon...
i would much rather lose deng but either way, we would still have a very capable player in salmons to fill in for either one of them…..

BG
He seems to take it to the hole harder nowadays. His basket drives seem to have improved, and I like that element to his game. His height doesn’t help that he gets his layups swatted away alot… but I think the refs swallow the whistle with hime, also.
But lately he takes it hard — shows more grit than anyone else this time of the season.
His work ethic seems above average… and on a young team I think this is something really good to be around!
Hope they find a way to keep him.
