David Thorpe is a hater!!!!

Star-divide

Like me you probably wait for the rookie's ranking every week on ESPN to see where Derrick ranks in the weeks leading up to his certain Rookie of the year award. With his recent eratic play and getting benched in the 4th I would agree maybe the race is closer but he's still the clear cut winner in my eyes. So I posed a question to David thrope and this was his response.

Dyami, Los Angeles: After watching D Rose lead my Bulls to a 4th quarter come back and a win, what is Del Negro thinking when he benches him in the 4th. Do you think that will also hurt him in the R.O.Y voting?

SportsNation David Thorpe: (12:38 PM ET ) That comeback was mostly due to a total Artest meltdown. But no, he's still a strong ROY candidate.

Artest melt down? What at the end of the game, give the kid some credit and respect the fact he hit some big tough shots and showed a glimpse of why he is the future. I think his benching does hurt his shot at ROY and more inportantly his development as our superstar.

i didn't want to say it at the time

but I agree. If they’d kept getting Yao the ball theres no way they would have come back.

by JSlakov on Mar 4, 2009 12:23 PM CST reply actions

I think they still would have beat us

if Rose didn’t come on strong in the 4th. They were up by double digits. We’d still have to out score them in that quarter by a lot to win and the shots that Rose and Gordon took to do that were no walk in the park. The Rockets didn’t let up defensively. They went a little brain dead offensively but they still had it in hand.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Mar 4, 2009 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

What? I'd say "pot calling the kettle black", but Thorpe's never expressed the kind of blind love for Thomas and Deng

that you do for BG. Yao stopped getting the ball, Houston stopped scoring, Rose and BG getting hot doesn’t mean anything without that first part.

My point was that

I didn’t see the Rockets let up defensively on us. We got our points the hard way. They could still have slowed down offensively and won since we were so far behind in the points and offensively stagnant until Rose and Gordon started hitting hard shots.

It seems like everyone is afraid to say Vinny is a bad coach though

Even Stephen A was beating around the bush the finally said he wasn’t going to say he was. But given all our talent he’d pick against us in the playoff picture.

by Camry on Mar 4, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

The scary thing is, he is in a position where he probably won't get fired.

First year coach with no coaching experience making the playoffs? Sounds like a success story that Vinny can tout to not get fired.

In reality, I think going for a guy like Avery Johnson, maybe Thibodeaux, is the route to go.

not avery

he would drive rose crazy. Thibodeau was and still is the perfect choice. He would help correct Derrick’s defensive flaws and with our personnel we could have one of the best defenses in the nba with thibedeau. Also, he knows a thing or two about developing a young athletic pg.

by rosefromconcrete on Mar 5, 2009 8:41 AM CST up reply actions

I'm coming to that conclusion, too.

I thought D’Antoni would be great because his teams aren’t that bad defensively (they were actually "average") considering that Nash and Stoudemire were his biggest pieces. And I thought he could make the offense respectable; he’s got the Knicks 13th(!!!!) in offensive efficiency, I’d think this team could do better. Add in the players’ natural defensive talents, and ….

But then this season came. And I don’t think the players’ defensive talents could come out without a lockdown, set-in-stone, know-your-role defensive scheme. I think I’m now to the point where I’d like to see a great defensive mind make this one of, if not THE, best defensive team in the league. Of course, you’d like said person to have a clue on offense, too. But I think they need to find their defensive identity first, then go offensive.

In the next two years, I’d love to see Top-5 in Defense, Top-5 in pace and Top-10 Offense. If they can do that by the end of 2011 w/ Rose, Deng, Thomas and Noah starting, I’d be excited.

He will always be loathed

Because he is ugly, and doesn’t have a post move. The average Bulls fan will say Chris Kaman is a better player.

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 4, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it's the uglieness.

After all, the girls (and guys) in Gainesville love them some Noah (though that may say more about them than him; Relatively, he qualifies as "attractive").

I really think it’s the terrible form on his “shot” and the simple fact that it took him 3-4 months to get into shape. I don’t even think the weed/cognac arrest had much to do with it. Just the busted lungs/motor.

I’m very surprised Thorpe listed him as THE MOST underrated though. Maybe he’s just trying to add another Bull to his summer roster.

by smash! on Mar 4, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

Thorpe lives in Florida and has been a big fan of Noah's intangibles since he was in college.

Plus, I think he’s well aware of Noah’s dominance in plus/minus type stats, and that many casual fans (even Bulls fans) hate the kid and think he’s worthless. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s at least one of the most underrated guys in the league, since Thorpe is the only one I’ve ever heard say it.

by arjoseph on Mar 4, 2009 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

The reason most Bulls fans are anti Noah is because they got frutrated and

stopped watching this team around December. Right when Noah was getting inconsistant minutes and was still out of shape. Around then the media was really hammering to. Most haven’t tuned in for his rebound in January and beyond.

If his strong play continues and the Bulls squeeze into the playoffs and have some success Noah will be seen in a different light. Or it might take a year and if he start next season in shape he’ll win the crowd.

by silentpete on Mar 4, 2009 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

if he's loathed for being ugly

i don’t see how the advantage goes to chris kaman, there.

by Jaina on Mar 4, 2009 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

That was a joke

But, he doesn’t have a legit post game, so the average fan will consider him a wasted draft pick. Some will admire his heart, and the more invested fans will realize how much he does contribute to the team.

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 4, 2009 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

Joakim Noah's been my favorite player since he came over from Florida.

I mean, Rose supplanted him, because he’s rose, but Joakim is awesome.
I concluded that the average fan was a retard a long time ago … egh.

I'm surprised no one posted this -

Tim (ChiTown): Will Luol Deng and Vinny be a part of the Bulls starting the season next year?

SportsNation David Thorpe: I wouldn’t be surprised if one or the other was not there.

The beef between Del Negro and Deng is heating up. I personally wouldn’t mind if both were gone. I tired of both their acts.

why cant people see the relationship between vdn's coaching and deng's poor play?

Deng will be fine with a competent coach. There is no offensive system and deng needs a system. His skills are not being utilized. Luol also contributes in other ways and what if he has really been playing with a stress factor in his shin. If we get Bosh, he could be an awesome 3rd option to bosh/rose.

Rose Number 2

Thrope has updated his rookie 50 and has Westbrook ahead of Rose even though Rose has a better PPG and APG. I think Russell is talented but not on the level of D Rose, I just hope Rose wakes up and goes wild to close out the season.

by Jaina on Mar 4, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

I still think it is like last week.

Since they are tied, he is putting the one with the higher PER first until there is further separation. But I don’t think there would really be any support for Westbrook to actually win the ROY. People who analyze the game look more at pure numbers, but people with votes look at the team first. It’s why Kobe didn’t win an MVP for so long and why Wade is 3-5 range this year and not really considered to supplant LBJ and KB. The Bulls are considered a team fighting for the playoffs with meaningful games. Rose is getting minutes over a player making 10 mil. a year who still has a lot of admirers around the league and helping the team win. Westbrook is playing for a lottery pick and nobodies cares about Earl Watson.

Rose would be mostly unanimous at this point among voters.

by Unrealcity on Mar 4, 2009 11:41 PM CST up reply actions

Westbrook has been better than Rose for the last two months and it hasn't been very close

Rose was the far superior player out of the gate, though.

not just out of the gate

but most likely in the long run also….russell can have that middle area if he wants

( on a side note, 2k has westbrook to win rookie of the year honors, but i think thats more dependant on the team. Westbrook gets more assists in 2ks simulated games, while rose gets more points. Westbrook basically averaged a double double 11pts 12 assists in 2ks simulated season, while rose had 15pts and 8 assists. The simulation was done by me by the way, i just started an association and simulated the entire season.)

they need a coach

rose is the next great thing. rose has shown he can make an impact when hes the focus of the offense in the few glimpses we seen this season
we just need a system that is built around rose and utilizes all his skills.

if you look at miami and how they play with wade (who rose was compared to alot) they simply just come out and set screens for him so he can blow into the lane and score easily.
a few plays like that could give us an extra 8-10pts every night and get the offense going real fast

by sin on Mar 5, 2009 2:28 AM CST up reply actions

it depends on how you define the next great thing

I dont think Rose will be one of the top 3 players in the nba. But top 10??? I think that is entirely possible. His flaws are all correctable and due to his work ethic I expect him to improve. As for Westbrook…hes gonna be a very good player, but hes not a pg. Also, of course Westbrook is gonna have better numbers. Someone (besides Durant) has to put up numbers on that team (and they play a style that is perfect for him). I dont think there will be any question in a couple of years that rose is more valuable. By the way, who really cares about ROY. If someone else gets it then maybe Derrick takes it as a slight and uses it for motivation.

by rosefromconcrete on Mar 5, 2009 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

What!!! You are trippin!!!

Rose is the next great thing!!! Right now the kid isn’t even a complete player and can get to the hoop at will, once his jumper improves and he realizes that this is his team it’s over. He will improve on defense and be this team’s star player by year 3. I agree with you that we will need another star to win because that’s what it takes to win in this league. I’m not saying he will ever be on the level of MJ because that is a level that no one will ever be on, well this Lebron kid is coming close.

Rose vs Westbrook....actually kinda close

Westbrook rebounds like a fiend, plays real solid D. No jumper though.
Rose is one of the fastest players, decent shot which places him above Westbrook

Rose is more explosive but in all honesty Westbrook is gonna be great too. Especially if he ever develops a shot. D-Rose is a gonna be a superstar but I really think Westbrook is great and he will develop as a 1 not a 2.
