I never saw Russell play but deep down in my basketball heart

I just don’t see Russell being the ‘’ultimate player.’’ I know he has the most chips but dude everyone looked like mike dunleavy and free agency was not even invented yet.

But hey Ben Gordon turned down 50 million dollars so what do I know?

There is not s single Bull

who could have started on the Celtics Russell Championship teams, despite their lack of physique. And that includes DRose, who has a way to go before he surpasses Bob Cousy. Bill Russell was the single biggest intimidating force in the history of the game, and essentially introduced the modern era. He treated opponents with such disdain that they feared entering the lane. Even Wilt, who was a giant, was afraid of him, and never won a championship while Russell was his opponent. While it was a completely different style of play, I suspect that the champion Celtic teams would have dominated the current team.

I hated Russell with every fiber of my being.

If Ben Gordon had Russell’s ability to dominate opponents mentally and psychologically, he would be Kobe or DWade,

you're serious?

I hate to say this because I don’t wanna offend the old timers but I think Russell would just be a good defensive center today. Thats it. He wasn’t that good of a scorer.

You Obviously Never Saw Him Play

Or know that much about basketball. I don’t want to offend you youngsters, but most knowledgeable basketball experts consider Russell a Top Ten all-time performer. The game was not invented in 1995. The only center playing today who is in his league (and he still hasn’t won anything) is Dwight Howard.

In his career, Russell won five regular season MVP awards (1959, 1961–63, 1965)—tied with Michael Jordan for second all-time behind Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s six awards. He was selected three times to the All-NBA First Teams (1959, 1963, 1965) and eight Second Teams (1958, 1960–62, 1964, 1966–68), and was a twelve-time NBA All-Star (1958–1969). Russell was elected to one NBA All-Defensive First Team. This took place during his last season (1969), and was the first season the NBA All-Defensive Teams were selected. In 1970, The Sporting News named Russell the “Athlete of the Decade”. Russell is universally seen as one of the best NBA players ever, and was declared “Greatest Player in the History of the NBA” by the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America in 1980. For his achievements, Russell was named “Sportsman of the Year” by Sports Illustrated in 1968. He also made all three NBA Anniversary Teams: the NBA 25th Anniversary All-Time Team (1970), the NBA 35th Anniversary All-Time Team (1980) and the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team (1996). Russell ranked #18 on ESPN’s 50 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century in 1999. In 2003, SLAM Magazine named Russell the #4 player of all time behind Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson. On Saturday February 14, 2009, during the 2009 NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the NBA Finals MVP Award would be named after Bill Russell."

I rest my case.

If none of the Bulls could be on that team or start

Thats some kind of talent I think.
I dunno just to me the ultimate player has just about everything. Best player on both sides-Marketable-Able to play with less talent. I think some times the Bulls beat teams with more talent but Jordan was able to will them.

But I can still see how someone else sees it though. He just did what he felt he had to do to win and was maybe a better teammate I suppose. But of course on either way I look at it I can’t say much because I haven’t seen him really.

There were a lot of white players back then.

And not trying to go to racial, but i think most people will have noticed that there aren’t really any good white American players anymore.

I think if you put Rose/Gordon back in that era, we’re probably talking about them as NBA legends.

Gordon’s offensive game is so sophisticated that he would be embarassing the players of that era. And Derrick Rose’s athleticism…in a era with generally smaller and less athletic players? He would dominate.

Yeah I have no idea just going off Cannoli

Thats what I was thinking physically and I was still wondering if the eras got more competitive or talented as the years went on.

There were a lot of "below the rim" players back then.

Made Russell’s shot-blocking and rebounding a lot more effective.

There were a lot of white players back then.

Maybe we can?

This coming from Ben Gordon

the player on our team who scores the most and makes nobody else around him better.

"Today people always talk about the best players as the guys who score the most."

I do know somebody who talked about that!

Gordon’s agent, Raymond Brothers, has told the Bulls that Gordon should be the highest-paid player on the team because he has led the team in scoring each of the last three seasons.

That's contract negotiations.

And Gordon ended up taking a $54 million/6 year contract that is less than Deng, less than Wallace/Hughes, less than Hinrich per a year I believe.

So he didn’t make that a principled stand.

Um

it’s been documented. Here. And in case you still don’t believe, or are too lazy to click:

Sam: More Ben. This is what happened, as I’ve heard it. Ben rejected $50 million for five years from the Bulls in 2007. Then he rejected $54 million for six years last summer. The negotiations were ugly and accusatory. Still, the Bulls came back to Ben again and said they have to move on and he had 48 hours to accept the offer. After all, this has been going on for over a year. Ben’s agent waited the 48 hours, or whatever time period, and said no. OK, said the Bulls. Then just before the deadline, the agent came back and said Ben would accept. This gave the Bulls pause about what was going on and why and now right before the deadline. So they backed off and said they’d wait it out since they still could offer Ben the most. Ben was upset, though I don’t see how the Bulls treated him unfairly.

Not my point

I was only saying Ben did attempt to sign and was refused the right since it was past a “deadline”. I’m on the Bulls’ side with this one FYI…they might not have gone about it in the most professional way but Reinsdorf doesn’t put up with individual agendas, unless it’s his own.
