Bulls 112, Pacers 106

woo woo woo Tyrus Thomas. Only 3 blocks away (um...and 2 rebounds) from the Reggie Miller triple double.

I was worried that this would be one of those games where everyone's hungover and the Bulls blow it. But no!

I suppose that can still happen tomorrow, plus it's a road game. But the Raps have likely given up on their season, so the Bulls have a distinct advantage in the motivation department.

Reposting my thoughts from the end of the previous thread:

I know Comcast gave player of the game to Salmons, and Gordon scored the most points

but, to me, Tyrus was the clear player of the game.

18 points on 10 shots, 8 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, and 7 blocked shots and ZERO turnovers in 32 minutes.

His defense was incredible and he put points on the board efficiently. That’s very impressive. Plus, zero turnovers might be the most impressive stat of all.

The whole Bulls team did a good job of hanging onto the ball tonight, just a 10.0% TO-rate tonight (save for Salmons who had 5 turnovers, but it was a fast paced game, and he played 40 mins, so meh).

Stats with contextual observations, good. Stats with no context, bad. Anecdotal observations unsupported by data, the worst.

I agree.

Agreed

Tyrus’s block at the end reminded me a bit of what Chandler used to do time and again for us in BG’s breakout rookie season, and Tyson never got that acknowledgement….but Tyson never had a game like Tyrus had for us today…he was spectacular, and his D on Granger when he was on Granger was great….

I keep seeing that play in the first half where Granger was ahead of our defense, could have driven in for an easy two, but for some reason stayed at the 3 pt line and took a needless shot that he missed, as really the time where that game was lost. I mean he’s a good player, but that was a really stupid play……we already were starting to take back this game, and I think that was their last real hurrah to get the momentum….granted there was still a half to play, but that’s one of those little plays that could have really changed the entire game.

I didn’t think we played well, sans Tyrus really…..but we played well enough to win (Brad Miller played well too). Other guys hit some shots, but BG and Salmons were awful on defense for much of the game….

We needed that win. Tyrus was a beast with 7 blocks and almost had a triple-double. I was at the game on Thursday, and Tyrus was interviewed after the game. The interviewer told him that he had just posted his 17th double-double of the season or something like that. Then he jokingly asked Tyrus if he could ever get ten blocks in a game.

Ten blocks in a game sounded ridiculous at the time, but after this game, I really think we’ll be able to see a triple-double from Tyrus within the next year.

by sweetneyisfat on Mar 28, 2009 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

rose and ty were both pretty close to having triple doubles

ty needed 2 reb and 3 blocks, rose needed 1 reb and 2 assists. tyrus would obviously have had the more difficult time, but he got 7 here and 8 a different night this season, he could do it.

Going back through the 86/87 season there

have only been 47 triple doubles including points, rebounds, and blocks. The only players under 6’11" to have one are Larry Nance, Kirilenko, and Ben Wallace (2x). Tyrus can do it, but it will be likely be a once or twice in a career type of thing.

Of those 47 there were 6 by Shawn Bradley, 9 by David Robinson, 9 by Olajuwon, and 10 by Mutombo. No one else had more than Camby’s 3.

I think its finally time to admit my mancrush was irrational. TT once again fell 3 short of Reggie's claim that he should be able to average 10 blocks per game.

But seriously folks, is it possible something significant is taking place before our eyes?

The NBA is always looking for a new angle to hype and Tyrus’s freakish athleticism was on display this week which likely didn’t go unoticed by the TNT viewers or the NBA brass.
If he suddenly becomes someone who will cause fans to tune in to watch him do his thing, maybe he will start receiving more star treatment from the officials and the possibility of getting 10 blocks in one game could actually become a reality. If D Wade can trip Kirk right in front of a referee and not get called because of his reputation, whats to stop Tyrus getting credited with blocks instead of goal tends on close calls once his creds are established?

Ir’s amazing that TT had 7 blocks today without drawing even one personal. Has it already started? From a PR stanpoint it would be easy to hype the young Bulls, led by the ROY Derrick Rose and the shotblocking sensation “the human highlight film”, Tyrusss Thomassss!

If the secret orders are passed on from the Commish, this can be the start of a whole new era and resurgance of past glory for the up and coming young Bulls. Or have I just got carried away and maybe it’s time to put away my fantasy bong?

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

My delusionary high was caused by fantasy second hand smoke I was exposed to while I was dreaming that the Bulls 1st round playtoff opponent was the Magic and they held Dwight Howard scoreless while the Bulls swept them aided by Tyrus’s 40 blocked shots and D Rose’s 50 assists which included 12 alley oops to you know who.

I have felt the same way since she came into the league,
but dissin’ her is risky business on the “politically correct”
train!

She is in the league for ONE reason, let’s be honest.

Also, maybe my imagination, but she has no love for the Bulls, historically.
Not so evident in the Indiana game.

P.S. Not to piss on the parade here, but, Indiana should NOT have even been in this
game in the 4th quarter. Bulls still need to learn to put away the games they have leads
in. They still don’t defend the perimeter very well, and those easy buckets by T.J. Ford late,
they gotta be better at stopping dribble-penetration late too, Where was the help defense when
Ford was, and yes hold on here guys, blowing past Rose. Sorry, I love the kid, but his D, well,
I expect it to improve a lot over time. He should be getting more blocks too, we know he can, right Andre Miller? :-)

Vinny without options becomes a better coach

Has anyone noticed that the Bulls play much better when the team is down to maybe 8-9 players?.. He can’t substitute and mess up. So the team wins more. Maybe it is time to get excited about this team.

by Edicus2288i on Mar 28, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It's because

We have a more balanced roster, less guard heavy and now 3 solid big man rotation of Tyrus-Noah-Miller…..we have 3 starting qualtiy bigs playing their correct positions….

That has more to do with it than options. Aaron Gray was completely outmatched and would hurt us far more than his stats would show….

VDN postgame comments...

he spewed a “Kirk gave us a big boost” line. Uhh what?? Was he even watching the same game? Anyway, on to my rant…

I’m happy about the win, but becoming a bit disturbed with a few of trends that I’m noticing (other than the fact that they still stink and should not have struggled to beat this team):

1) Why does VDN feel the need to try to create a timed sub pattern now? In the last several games, he’s been inserting the first subs around the 5:00 min mark of the 1st and 3rd quarters. It’s not serving a purpose. It’s like he woke up one morning and thought to himself “hmmm, I know what…I’ll sub guys at timed intervals! Sloan used to do it with Stockton, and it worked there, they’re both hall of famers, it HAS to work!” He’s trying to coach again instead of just letting things happen. Which brings me to point 2…

2) Why does VDN feel the need to always sub in both Kirk and Miller at the same time? It’s the same thing every game now. Around the 4 or 5 min mark, both Kirk and Brad come in for Ben and Noah. Ben is a shooter/scorer, he needs to get into a rhythm…playing for the first 6 or 7 minutes and then getting yanked for no reason helps his game in no way, shape, or form. It also puts unneeded pressure on him to try to score or get shots up because he knows that he only has a few minutes before he’s coming out. Bad effects all the way around. Which brings me to point 3…

3) Does Salmons pass the ball to Ben? Ever? I’m not saying…but I’m just saying…

4) This is more of an “all season long” trend, rather than a “last few games” trend…but Stacey King and Neil Funk really suck big time. They needlessly picked on Ben for the entire 1st quarter/1st half. King kept saying that Ben was getting “torched” by Rush, but that was not the case. Of his first 6 shots, only 2 of those were with Ben guarding him. There were several switches that happened. Then as Rush continued to “torch” everyone else, abusing both Salmons and Kirk, nothing was said.

Gah…watching this team and everything that goes along with it can be so frustrating…even when they win…

http://awsomepeoplesearch.com/

by NormVanBeer on Mar 29, 2009 12:20 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah

And I seemed to see Salmons picking up Rush more often in the switches and getting demolished by him early…..while John’s been solid defensively since the trade, he was really at fault early in this game…..but he made up for it later on when we needed those 3’s.

Not a great Salmons game though, but still better than avg….what a player he’s been—even on a bad night, he does enough to look good.

About re-signing BG

They really have to. Think about it.
There just are not that many guys in the league
with as pure of a shot as BG. The three threat he gives
them, really good FT shooter, these things eclipse the
occasional turnover or forced shot. Yeah, I know, he can
make us crazy sometimes, but 20 a game is 20 game.

BG has been pretty much of a pro through it all too. Accepting and
thriving in a reserve role, and actually getting more assists than ever before too.

COACHING! If VDN used BG correctly, and with the right guard combo, he would be
even more effective. At times VDN seems completely oblivious to the “HOT HAND” and takes
out guys who are lighting it up. The trade really helped, and now imagine a REAL coach next year!

TT's last three games...

18-8-7(blocks)
15-12-3(blocks)
18-12-5(assists)

But I thought Tyrus’s improvement was merely a statistical anomaly? At least, that’s what many were arguing when the Amare(tina) trade was under discussion.

Or could it be that Tyrus simply plays well when he is consistently allowed to play a significant number of minutes?

"We're gonna hire a motherf*cking coach with NO experience? I agree TT + minutes = Impressive statistics

Thomas had 18 pts, 8 boards and 7 blocks in only 31 minutes against the Pacers. Projected over 39 minutes they show 22/10/9.
Do we really need TiT taking minutes from TT while his confidence level is sky high?
