Game Preview #73 - Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat

[Note by your friendly BullsBlogger, 03/26/09 3:07 PM CDT: Thanks to Bullieving in Miami (of course) for today's game preview. Derrick Rose is expected to play but not start. Likely just for injury reasons...but it's Vinny, so who knows. I'm Lovin it Live tonight! ]

Here we are, the home stretch, the final ten games of the season. The Bulls will be reaping the benefits of having that circus trip at the beginning of the season as there are only 3 road dates left (TOR, IND, DET) and they are all winnable games. In fact, the only true tests left on the schedule, in my opinion, are tonight versus the Heat and a home game versus Philadelphia. This is actually a bit unsettling. I’m sure we all just want wins to solidify a playoff berth, and I’m pretty sure they can lock up the 7thspot and assure a match-up against Orlando or Boston, but the "light" schedule is a concern to me. First off, I just hate the possibility of this team blowing it with the easy schedule and actually losing some of these games and playing their way out of the playoffs. Secondly, assuming they do finish with many wins, it won’t be against playoff-caliber teams, so it could easily give the players a false sense of security, thinking they’re better than they are because of a win streak, and then receive a rude awakening in Round 1. Either way, this team probably gets ousted in the opening round, because I believe Boston’s D is overwhelming and Orlando has the perimeter game to exploit the Bulls lack of perimeter D and they have the best center in the league in Dwight Howard, who is just an unstoppable force. I don’t even want to imagine this kid in another 3 or 4 years. (sidenote: went to a Bulls-Magic game last year, and Dwight Howard is totally worth the price of admission.) I’m hoping the Bulls get the 8th spot and perpetuate the curse that the Bulls have over the Cavs.

On to tonight’s game. Derrick Rose is listed as a game-time decision as the training staff has seen improvement in the injured right wrist. I truly hope he can give it a run as I’d like this game to be a playoff warm-up against a playoff team with a complete and healthy roster (minus Deng, obviously). It would also be nice to see Rose finally get the best of Chalmers as it seems Super Mario (as they call him down here in Miami) has hit the proverbial rookie wall. He is 17-45 FG in his last 6 games, only breaking double digits twice (and one of those was just a modest 10 points). I believe the Bulls should just clog the lane tonight, not allow Wade any easy scores in the paint, and try to force guys like Chalmers, Haslem, and Moon to win the game. It should be an entertaining game as the last two games between these teams have been very close, both games being won at the buzzer. So, excluding the possibility of a Matrix dunk to win the game (since, obviously, Shawn Marion is no longer with the team) and hoping Erik Spoelstra doesn’t draw up another "Wade steal the ball and drill a runner from mid-court" play, I’m hoping the Bulls can avoid the season sweep at the hands of the Heat (I’ll never hear the end of it). It can happen. The Heat is just as bad as the Bulls on the road, and Miami lost a heartbreaker last night in Indy, where they have now lost 17 in a row. That feeling of demoralization will carry over. It’s a fact.

Enjoy the game, Chi-Town! Send those Heat back to South Beach. (I make that sound like it’s a bad thing.)

VDN can't be serious about not starting Rose

That would just be comical

mhm

I was considering making a Fanpost saying we’d be better off staying in the 8th seed. We’ve had decent success against the Cavs in the past, but the Magic and Celtics own us up front routinely.

by JSlakov on Mar 26, 2009 3:27 PM CDT reply actions

I can kinda of see both a little bit

I think we’re deeper than the Magic (for what its worth)
I just wonder about the Celtics sometimes but I don’t hate our matchups with them either.

the one major thing with the cavs

is they’ve only lost 1 game at home all season. not that i could see us winning a 7 game series against them even if all our games were played in the united center… :P but still.

i’d rather have the magic than the other two.

I'd rather play Boston

than Cleveland or Orlando personally…

If history repeats

itself, I’d rather play Boston and hopefully the Bulls can take them out like they did Miami the year after their Championship.

We beat the Magic by 20

I’d rather play a banged up Celtics or Magic team than the healthy 65-win Cavs with the world’s best player on their team. I just can’t see LeBron losing in the first round, ever.

by YaoPau on Mar 26, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think the Bulls can take advantage of the 3-point happy Magic in a 7 game series.

Mmmmm!

The Magic are totally beatable. We’ve got legit defenders we can throw at Howard too. They’d have to shoot their way to victory and shooting comes and goes.

Great Preview

I understand the thought of security if we say go 7-3 against mostly the crud to finish .500, that we might think we’re better than we are….but then come to think of it we would have been what 12-4…and that’s a damn good stretch.

I think this team needs confidence and think that winning at that kind of a clip to close the year could give us the mojo we lost 2 years ago. We have talent, our guys might see that using that talent for the team might be the best for them the individual, and who knows we’d have a better shot.

I certainly don’t think given the drubbings we’ve had against all the East big 3 that any of them would take that competition too lightly even if we went 12-4 to end the year (going 7-3 from here on out mostly against the muck)….it would build confidence for next year, which is what I want most from this team at this point…..I don’t think there’s any way we win a 1st round series, but we may be able to build up our confidence and get our youngs a chance to see the light if we compete hard to close this out and work hard in the playoffs. Incidentally I think our best chance at getting to 6 playoff games is against the Cavs (I think the Cavs are the best comp in the East, but I also think they’re the guys who match up the best of us against the big 3). I think the Celtics with a healthy Garnett are a 4 game series waiting to happen (Though I do think Clevelan could beat them and who knows with Orlando), I think we could steal a game from the streaky shooting Orlando, but would see saw more with 3 of the 4 losses as blowouts against them…..not quite a confidence booster….

That said though I still would rather us secure a playoff spot, and if that has to be #7, so be it.

It wouldn't kill you to hit enter a few times

looks like you’ve been taking posting lessons from majoy! :) Nicely done from what I could stand…we owe the Heat a beating after that last game, but we’ll see what happens now that Vinny really is playing mad scientist w/ the lineup.

Miami/Chicago games have been fun to watch all year, I expect this to be a nice one too.

playing w/ 1 hand than Hinrich with his little thumb bra he’s got goin…

I'll be loving this one on tape delay, so I really hope they win

I don’t have the self control to watch the game without first looking at the score – and if it’s a loss, it’s really depressing to watch.

The games with the Heat have been so close this year, it’d be super-great to have a decent lead at the end and avoid the semi-inevitable DWade steal giving Miami a chance to tie or win.

IMO

This is a different team than the one we saw before the allstar game…granted the trades helped, but our team is gelling and I think they can smell the playoffs. Matter of fact, they are hungry to get back to the post season…and may be the most dangerous team to face in the 1st round. Anways..Go Bulls!

well im watching the games to

and if i had to choose between the 7th seed but rose has a chance to injure his hand worse and slows his progression or easily get the 8th seed and rest our future all star. I’m pickin # 2

We would be better off as the 7th seed.

i don’t want any part of LeCrab and his camera in the first round, cause we would be up against

the
world, the refs, TNT, ABC, ESPN.

I saw a girl walking with Chicago Bulalo printed on her tee shirt. The bulls logo on the background of a steaming bowl. yum yum

We might win this one.

We’ve run out of ways to lose to Miami. Winning is the only thing left to do. And seriously, after playing them so many times recently you’d think we’d go out there with a plan or something. I am hoping our guys watched a lot of tape.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Mar 26, 2009 6:15 PM CDT reply actions

Plan?

I wonder what’s on the dry erase board in the locker room

“Be professional. Let Kurt shoot 34 times. Small ball small ball small ball. Time outs are good for the soul. Ball movement is for assholes, Tim Thomas=Black Larry Bird?”

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 26, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Tyrus will play

tonight but Tim Thomas will not. Derrick is still in a lot of pain but will play. His high school will be there tonight and I think Vinny should have him start. He’s still in a lot of pain but Vinny could take him out after a few minutes.

by sue369 on Mar 26, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

If I remember correctly

Doesn’t Vinny have some policy dating back to summer league where if they miss practice for any reason they don’t start. Maybe that is what is up here. If the decision is based on his health it is flawed. Starting or not isn’t going to help the wrist.
