the new tyrus roll to the basket

I don't know if this has been talked about yet, but has anyone noticed the new tyrus roll to the basket bounce pass and dunk?

If you are as painfully aware of how slow his offensive skills have developed as I am, you might appreciate this new skill.  He literaly trusts his man to bounce pass the ball to him midway to the basket and is READY to pick up the ball in mid bounce and finish with a dunk.

this doesn't sound like big news for a professional NBA player but, again to witness some growth is just wonderfull to see.  kinda like a new dad watching his child pronounce a new word for the first time.

Tyrus now has FOUR offensive skills that I can count on:

1.  the put back attempt on the missed shot.

2.  the lob pass for a dunk

3. (suprisingly) the (wide open uncontested) 17 foot shot

and

4. the give up the ball, block the defender then drive straight to the basket and pick up the bounce pass for a dunk score that I saw tonight on a couple of drives.

is he really learning how to play both sides of the court or am I just dreaming?

Hey,

it’s something!

"You remember the first time you picked up a basketball video game and you had no idea how to run plays, so you just gave the ball to your shooter and you ran around the court aimlessly until a defender was far enough away and then you jacked up a shot? THAT IS LARRY HUGHES!"

I didn't see the game but

saw the highlights of last night’s game against the Wizards. Two of TT’s clips were cut, rolling to the basket ones. I really hope that our hopes for a DRose and TT play like these materialize finally. Perhaps Brad has been teaching TT some lessons on cutting.

in his

third year in the nba, he’s learning the basic moves taught in grade school gym class, albeit tyrus is learning them at a slower rate than grade schoolers.

yay for his improvement, boo for his self imposed ceiling – which lowers ever so slightly every game.

by leeac on Mar 24, 2009 12:55 PM CDT reply actions

If you think about

the number of years Tyrus has been playing he hasn’t been playing much longer than a grade schooler. He didn’t ever play until 8th grade or high school don’t remember which.

Derrick Rose-2009 ROTY Tyrus Thomas-2009 MIP...hope I'm at least half right

huh

im sure hes played basketball, i think he didnt play for an actual team or league until the middle of high school. Im sure he shot the ball around with his friends or dunked the ball a couple of times growing up, maybe played a few pickup games.

And he is a pro---practicing daily...

Whether he started late… Only played one year in college… Didn’t get playing time… Isn’t treated like a star… Whatever the litany of apologist arguments are out there… The fact remains, he’s been a professional basketball player for three years, assumedly playing basketball EVERY DAY and he is just picking up one of the most basic plays in the game now?

Come on…the complaints about coaching staff are legion here. Do people really think that Scott Skiles is unable to teach the pick and roll? Really?

by jmogs on Mar 24, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

They don't practice every day

I don’t know where you get that logic.

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

by Ozzie Montana on Mar 24, 2009 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

So, it's better he doesn't learn at all

So you can keep saying how dumb he is?

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

Not at all, I would like to see TT succeed

However, I do not share the insane level of Tyrus love that many BaB denizens do… He has improved from a disappointing rookie to and inconsistent and therefore oft disappointing 3rd year player who has some of the most amazing on court mental lapses of any player I have seen in recent years.

To be clear, I truly hope he pans out. But they have a decision to make on him and the direction of the frontcourt soon and I have not seen enough to warrant a big investment. From the mad love for TT displayed around these parts I am clearly in the minority. I don’t understand how that can be, but whatever…

As a rookie he was one of the best defensive players in the league.

There’s absolutely nothing disappointing about that.

Stats with contextual observations, good. Stats with no context, bad. Anecdotal observations unsupported by data, the worst.

Ummm...

Wow, I will no longer apologize for hyperbole. Did I miss him making first team all-defensive team in the NBA? Second team? Is there a rookie all defensive team? As I remember it, he blocked a lot of shots, but looked lost in most defensive schemes.

I will officially no longer comment on Tyrus. The insane devotion seems to know no bounds and certainly is beyond the scope of reality. You are right. He is already a star and should be treated like one. He is definitely better than Amare. No way should he be traded for Bosh or any other useful frontline piece… Y’all are crazy.

by jmogs on Mar 25, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he didn't regress from those lofty defensive levels.

He did lead the league in DRtg as a rookie, which has never been done before (the closest ever was Duncan). I’m not saying he hasn’t regressed on defense a bit. He was an amazing defensive presence, and continues to be. DSPM had him at +5 on defense (which is Ben Wallace level in his prime contribution on that end). There are a number of other metrics that showed him as one of the best per-minute defenders in the league.

His offense is what has held him back. It kept him on the bench as a rookie, and it’s usually what gets him sent there now. It’s the reason criticism of him is still valid. He’s out of control far too often on offense, and thinks he’s better than he is on that end. If he could get his offense to where his defense is, he’d be an elite player.

As it is, he’s an elite defensive presence, who sometimes can change the game on offense, and other times can kill the Bulls with poor decisions.

Stats with contextual observations, good. Stats with no context, bad. Anecdotal observations unsupported by data, the worst.

by fundamentallysound on Mar 25, 2009 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

If you go back to that season.

He was playing super aggressively, which caused problems for teams. And he was doing a lot better in terms of individual defense as well. Partly because guys weren’t ready for his level of athleticism. He did a great job on Duncan for example during that season, and really bothered teams those last two months of the season where he got playing time thanks to injuries.

by Scotter on Mar 26, 2009 1:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, because the awards are what we should use to validate opinions

Bruce Bowen has never made a 1st team All-Defense, nor has he won a DPOY. Shane Battier hasn’t made a single All-Defense team, either.

You’re like a child who can’t handle people using facts and resort to dumb arguments. Who is treating Tyrus like a star, or said they wouldn’t include him in a trade for Bosh or Amare? He was a good defender, and remains one to this day. That doesn’t make him a superstar, but it does make him a good player.

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

Wow, you are an angry person Ozzie Montana!

You lash out at the drop of a hat.

I was responded to an unsubstantiated and generalized assertion that TT was one of the best defensive players in the league his rookie year. Fundamentallysound responded with a reasonable fact-based response. Unlike you, Fresh, doing the same thing you are lashing out at…

As for the treating Tyrus like a star thing…look back at the other Tyrus thread. There was a generalized gotta play him like a star comment there. And, in fact, look back at the threads in February plenty of comments were posted about not wanting to trade TT in a package for Amare. Take a breath, lighten up on the unnecessary attacks, and I apologize if I insulted your beloved TT. Cripes.

In his defense,

you were making dumb arguments.

Yes, I concede hyperbole

They do not practice EVERY day. I get your point.

That said, I think you got my point, which is that he is putting in a ton of time on the court in practice and games. He should have advanced beyond the most basic plays in the game.

ah here it is

its wiki but i trust it… :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrus_thomas

In high school, Thomas was only 5-10 as a freshman. In high school, Thomas tried out for his varsity basketball team but was cut. He only played organized basketball in his junior and senior years at McKinley High School in Baton Rouge, but never really built up enough recruiting hype to be considered a top 100 prospect.

That last one is bigger because

of how much timing and team work is needed for it to run smoothly. It’s also a staple of high efficiency scoring for any good team, and even more important for this team which, up until now did not have it.

Remembering how much that move worked to keep stockton and malone in the playoffs for many season’s is what has me excited.
