I'm sure many of you have seen this. It's a new pre-game ritual LeBron and his teammates have before games where they are pretending to take a group photo. I was just curious what everyone thinks of it: funny or too much?

Personally, it bugs the shit out of me
LeBron already does the thing with the rosin that he ripped off MJ which is obnoxious as hell. Plus he spends half of the games prancing and skipping around the court celebrating after every shot to make sure people are watching his every move.
It’s a shame because you wanna like him because he’s such a great player and he seems like a decent guy off the court, but all of his nonsense makes it extremely difficult. I don’t remember ever seeing a great player act like this. Also, it’s one reason why the playoffs are gonna suck, we gotta deal with 4-7 games of this shit. Everyone knows you’re great cut out all of this extra crap please

I don't care for it, either.
But I don’t like a lot of the camera mugging in any sport, so it was pretty guaranteed I’d be annoyed. Celebrating after a big win I can get on-board with, given the adrenaline and excitement of the moment. During the game is OK – I’m not big on the baseball players who pose after a home run or the WRs who act like they’ve never scored a TD before, but I also don’t expect the players to be robots after doing something pretty great. But before the game even starts?
But then I liked sports better (generally speaking – the HD is nice) back when the coverage was low special effect and fans didn’t expect to be entertained during timeouts and all.

when we played the cavs on ESPN and lebron rolled his ankle, they started showing him stretching it out instead of the actual game.
this is why i hate lebron. part of it’s not even his fault.

Doug Collins is talking about how much energy LeBron has
while all of this is going on, and I think that’s appropriate—the guy’s a leader, and he doesn’t care whether his good natured preening pisses off fans of the other team.
The downside is the people rooting against him are pissed off. The upside is good chemistry and feel-good vibes with his teammates and fans.

I agree
The rest of the league and its fans will hate him, but it will just unify the team bond as “us against the world.” As long as he gets along with his teammates, it doesn’t matter what people think of him. He’s LeBron James, people will be sucking up to him and trying to get on his good side for years to come.

It has nothing to do with pissing me off as an oppossing fan
That’s not what I meant. I think it’s an embarrassment to the game. When is it gonna be too much? Is he gonna start bungee jumping into the game? It’s professional basketball, it’s not the and-1 mixtape tour. Play the game and have some class

couldn't agree more
i don’t like his “good natured preening” as a fan of the sport, not an opposing fan. even when i’m watching the cavs play other teams other than the bulls, i almost always find myself rooting against him because i can’t stand his attitude. i don’t get feel good vibes at all even if i’m trying to “root” for the cavs to win the game for whatever reason (whether it be they’re playing another team i dislike more, of which there aren’t many at this point, or whether i want the other team to lose due to playoff implications). it’s just obnoxious.

I find myself rooting against him too. Which is strange for me because I normally just enjoy watching great players do their thing. It’s really just the total package, he needs to tone it down a little bit.

Yeah
and other great players don’t do that and still are respected in the league and are able to lead their team. The extra stuff is just theatrics and annoying. It is one thing to get excited after a big win in the playoffs, but constantly prancing around during a regular season game… it really takes away from it for me.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

When did professional basketball stop being entertainment?
When did the average American stop wanting more, more, MORE!!!! (well, maybe that’s happening now…)

Yes it's entertainment
but most importantly it’s a sport and a competition. And just like everything else there are certain principles and guidelines that are followed to maintain the integrity of the enterprise. Once people start to operate outside of those guidelines the game will begin to lose what made it so special in the first place. I don’t want to see the NBA turn into the WWE in 20 years.

It's sport and competition for the players and coaches involved, but not for you it isn't.
For you, it’s the entertainment value of watching sport and competition. It’s entertainment to the “fan”. If you don’t like the product, there’s always others to watch.
I mean, I don’t really like that stuff either, but quite honestly, I don’t even notice it. It just goes right by me. I recognize it’s part of the product I purchase (mostly metaphorically-speaking), but it’s not something I complain about because for the post part I don’t see it.
I’m not arguing with your right to complain about it, of course, just arguing to give a different perspective.

Maybe that didn't come out right on my end
I am entertained by the sport and competition aspect and can do without much of the ancillary stuff. I pretty much am the same way though, most of this stuff doesn’t bug me, but for whatever reason Lebron’s antics have bothered me. Maybe it’s just the fact that he is turning into a Jordan like figure and I’ve been a little more aware of his behavior, not sure, but I’m not much of a fan.

I guess for me it's that the game is the entertainment I want
I don’t like the sideshows that come along with the game these days.
I realize that a lot of people do – although most of the people I know who personally like all that stuff aren’t so much fans of the game. They’re the ones who talk through the game action and have no idea what’s going on, then go nuts for the mascot dunking during a timeout, and who couldn’t even name all the guys on the team. (Yes, I know I’m stereotyping here.)

That's cool, but then that's the same as saying, "I didn't like that movie."
I don’t always listen to music with the biggest budgets behind it, or that are the most popular or with the “best” song-writers or musicians because I like the purity and art of independent music more.
There’s always college basketball or European basketball, right?
Similar thing, no?

And just like here, I’d probably go on to explain why I didn’t like the movie in excruciatingly boring detail. ;)
I am a little sad to realize that I’m rapidly becoming one of the old farts that reminisces fondly about “the good old days,” though. (I have freshmen in my classes now that were born after I graduated from high school! How the heck did this aging thing happen so fast?)

I don't really care what lebron does before the game.
But it is really getting annoying how he argues about every call/non-call and then showing off after every basket. Stuff like that makes me like players such as D.Rose even more when he wows everyone and then acts like its business as usual.
by bustingmybulls on Mar 20, 2009 11:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly... it makes Rose even more special. It's like that quote from Van Gundy about Rose:
“He had a beautiful play the other night and he had no reaction, just got back on defense. For a rookie guard, it’s how hard he plays, and he plays for the wins. He has a style of his own.”

Anyway I guess its kinda funny first time I saw it I thought it was a good one.
Then I saw it on ESPN or something like a week later and thought “they still do this???”
But hey if Cleveland and all them like it I suppose. But I do think that Lebron knows the line…and knows that people will let him cross it. But I anyway I just thought it was funny the first few times I still don’t mind it though.

That's why I don't like
And why I can’t see him as the best player of the NBA. He’s awesome, no question about that, but I hate his attitude. I think he’s not humble. I prefer Wade and Kobe a lot more… At least, I don’t remember seeing them acting like this
by bull83 on Mar 21, 2009 9:10 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If LeBron isn't humble, than Kobe is....what?
I think they’re all similar in terms of personality. LeBron is just more obvious with his desire to be the next (or better) Jordan. All 3, to me, are copying MJ’s attitude on and off the court.
Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.
by Ozzie Montana on Mar 21, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
MJ was never ever as consistently brash or blatant on the court like Lebron.
Every now and then, yes. But before the game, in the breaks, after a big play- he was serious, he was focused and he immediately got back on D. Sure, he had his moments where he hit 6 straight 3-pointers and he turned to the announcers and shrugged his shoulders, and every now and then he taunted people after a dunk or shot in their grill. But compared to Lebron’s antics, MJ was bashful.
The Kobe comparison, yes. It drives me nuts how he has even copied MJ’s facial expressions. He sounds like him, his shot looks like his, he walks like him. It’s extreme.
by smash! on Mar 22, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I liked when MJ did it (not to say I don't like Lebron)
because those were actually amazing plays.
Or he did so because something led up to it. Like when one of the Knicks I think had pushed…I forget who Pippen or someone on the ground and they were chirping at each other. Later in the game Jordan drives in and gets an And 1 on the guy and hes staring at the guy and yelling at him.
Or vs the Blazers I think it was because finally he was separating himself from Clyde but I could be reading into that too much. Anyway they just seem in the heat of the moment.
by Camry on Mar 22, 2009 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That knicks one
I think it was physical, but in that and 1 play, i think it was ewing and some other guy who jumped at jordan and one of em took a mad swipe at mj’s head….like no attempt to go for the ball, and while they were all in mid air. Mj finishes the shot and two just fall to the ground and he yells at them more out of anger as opposed to a taunt, something like “Dont you ever do that ever again or ill rip your freakin limbs off your bodies”….it was more like a lion roaring to show his dominance as opposed to what lebron does (a hyena laughing?)

No, you're definitely right about that
There just is something that’s different about Lebron from those other guys you mentioned. Great players are obviously gonna be a little arrogant or a little cocky, that plays a big role in making them great. But when you watch Lebron during games it’s like he thinks he’s in a movie or something. Every little thing he does is exaggerated. Just play basketball and let people decide how great you are instead of dramatizing everything

Just watch the basketball game if that's all your concerned with.
Why do you need to watch the pre-game? Why do you need to read the quotes? Why watch the half-time shows? Why, w/ DVR, do you need to watch the commercials?
I mean, if you literally knew nothing else about LeBron except what he did on the court and during games, sure you’d still be bothered, but how much less?
I mean, if you want to “tell” James not to do that stuff, isn’t it easier to tell yourself not to care?

You're kind of making a little too much out of it
Sure it bugs me, and I’m not the guys biggest fan, but it’s not like I’m sending him death threats or anything. And I sure as hell ain’t gonna alter my viewing habits to avoid seeing some of his stunts. Plus a lot of the things he does occur during the games, and since I love watching NBA basketball, particularly good NBA basketball and he just so happens to be on one of the best teams in the league… it’s kind of unavoidable. But in the meantime, I’m just gonna keep bitching about it:)

When it's team
oriented I don’t mind it because the fans enjoy it and it shows that the team is a close knit group. It’s like Boston’s 3 hanging out. It’s something the Bulls need to do with each other and communicate on and off the court to be able to gel on the court.
Now I can’t stand the way LeBron and Garnett taunt opposing players, it’s classless.
I remember when the Bulls made the consecutive playoff appearance with Skiles, Deng and Nocioni were neighbors and played Soccor together and the other guys hung out together.
It seems like VDN is trying to force this on the guys by inviting them to his house for the superbowl and taking them bowling, but I think it’s something they have to do on their own without VDN.

Shaq ran Kobe out of town. Jordan ran his whole team out of town. I don’t know about Duncan, but I’m sure he has Buford and Pop’s ear. Garnett didn’t have that in him for the most part, and he had to suffer through some horrible decisions from his management.
