This is what worries me about Rose

He’s entirely too willing to stand on the outskirts and watch his team play. It’s one thing to be unselfish, it’s another entirely to just stand around for the whole game

There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

hahahah i saw somebody say a little further up, that Rose is a point guard on any team but since the bulls don't run set plays he's a 2

i’d reply to it but i’m gettin dizzy with all the jumpin around of the OGT… anyways, you couldn’t be more right…

it’s like they always say, the point guard is the extension of the coach on the court…

just thinking about applying that situation to the Del Negro/Rose partnership makes me want to puke blood

QFT.

John Salmons is a major player, and fits in great with this team. He uses Ben Gordon as a decoy better than any player I’ve seen on the Bulls. He is such a smart player.

PG-Derrick Rose
SG-Ben Gordon
SF-John Salmons

I already have my starting 1-3 penciled in for the Bulls next year. I don’t see any scenario where Deng should be starting over Salmons, and that means the Bulls have to aggressively try to trade Deng, because you don’t pay $80 million (okay, down to like $71 million next year) for a backup.

Vinny's been making coaching decisions for awhile now, really since Reinsdorf knocked the coaching staff.

Some have been good, quite a few bad, but he is coming around.

I think that’s the difference between Boylan and Del Negro now. Boylan was mindless. Vinny clearly is making decisions, and in a game like tonight, they’ve been smart. Even in the Miami game, while he made some bad decisions (like not putting the ball in Gordon’s hands at the end), he made a lot of good strategic decisions in that game.

Kirk who never gets love was a +16. He kept the Bulls under control and deserves kudos.

Thabo is not your guy that will score 38 pts, even with little defense on him. But he will bother your team’s best player all night. Salmons. Gordon. Rose. Whoever he needs to be put on.

Great game to watch tomorow!

This game was huge. It could be the catalyst for a late season run.

Loosing would have been devastating, especially after keeping it so close. But winning to the defending champs, holding our own, not giving up. This was great. Let’s hope this is the start of something good.

He played a Point Guards game tonight. He did not force....which was good. With Salmons and

There was a note in the OKC paper - I'll put it in tomorrow's game thread

But IIRC, they’ve only lost 6 home games since the New Year, and all were to extremely good teams, several on last second shots. And their defense has been much better lately.

Plus, OKC actually has a crowd that gets really into the games. It will likely be a very tough game.

But I can’t hold it against the team on the floor, and people here are thrilled to have a major league sports team of our own to root for. Salmons can figure out in a few days how to play with Rose and Gordon. Salmons comes right in and kills from day one. Imagine if we had salmons for the whole season. We would have a better record. Who knows, maybe Salmons’ presence will finally light a fire under Deng. He hasn’t had any competition at the 3 since he was a rookie IIRC Luol has essentially started every game at the 3 for which he was deemed healthy/healed.

Either way, we should end up with better play at the 3, regardless of whether it’s Salmons or Deng.

Hell naw...Deng wilted because of all the attention Rose was getting...so now he has REAL

competition. It would be a miscarraige if Deng starts over Salmons. Deng has to earn it. He has to take it from Salmons and I don’t think he has the balls to do it.

The only way Deng starts is if Gordon is on another team next year and even then if we still have Kirk..he may start at SG.

I didn't state a preference for Salmons or Deng,

Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!

by wjb1492 on Mar 17, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Where's Kirk been getting this all season long?

I think Kirk is an interesting case study.

I think at the beginning of the season, the notion was “Kirk will be our shooting guard and make Gordon expendable”.

Then it became, “Gordon is a good shooting guard fit with Rose. They make an elite backcourt. Hinrich will never be the longterm shooting guard next to Derrick Rose”

Then Hinrich came back, playing great. Momentum swung on his side for keeping him.

Then he started playing like crap again, really playing crappy leading up to the trade deadline if my memory serves correct. He deserved to get ripped on for his play during that 2 week stretch or so.

I think a lot of the notion though, was that Ben Gordon is better than Kirk Hinrich, and if we have to choose between Gordon and Hinrich, we want Ben.

But since the trades, with Brad Miller and Kirk having a bit of chemistry, Kirk has been playing good. He’s had solid defense, and his TS% for the season is great. He’s accepted his limited role. I don’t know how anyone couldn’t be happy with Kirk right now.

That's not the way I remember it, but I'm no more objective about Kirk than you are about Ben. ;)

Lately, yes, the sentiment has been more positive, but with Lu sitting and John needed at the 3 there are plenty of minutes for most people to be happy. I rarely mind when he’s being fairly criticizes for sucking in game threads or post game analysis – but I do tend to remember things like people writing essays about him being a team cancer.

I think it’s likely that I, and the other Kirk fans notice every bit of criticism about Kirk and you likely skim over them because you either agree or don’t care, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

But the point stands – I do feel the pain of Lu’s fans, because it sucks to high heaven to come to BaB (which, for me at least, forms a far larger part of my life than I really care to admit to) for a little Bulls conversation and find that a huge portion of the posting is directed at crapping on or looking for any trade for a player you like. Kind of ruins the fun of the whole thing.

I’ve been saying that people are going to talk about Deng’s contract like Noce’s deal and maybe even Ben Wallace’s. It is for a long time and a lot of money, so it kind of hangs like an albatross around the neck of the team. When a legit player goes down for an extended period of time, the team usually feels some kind of hardship. Here, Deng was instantly and completely replaced by a cheaper and better player. He is not missed at all. It’s like he has been totally forgotten. You have a problem if your team is no worse off (or maybe even better) with a $70MM player on the DL.

but if one player dominates the other, that could be enough to push one of the two over the top. Westbrook scares me because he plays like his ass is on fire. Let's compare Salmons and Deng in the fourth quarter

Salmons: Drives from the three point line takes contact and finishes with a soft touch and goes to the line to shoot a free throw.

Deng: Gets ball at elbow. Look of fear suddenly appears on his face. Pump fakes 6 times straight. The defender is confused, but holds his ground. Deng tries to drive down the lane, dribbles the ball off his shoe and the other team steals the ball, takes it the length of the court for a highlight reel dunk.

Lots of talk about Luol in this thread

It seems like most have completely soured on Luol especially given that Salmons is playing so well. Instead of replacing Deng, what if the Bulls don’t (or are unable to) re-sign Gordon and start Salmons at the two with Luol slotting back into the three spot after he returns from injury? Any thoughts on how that line-up would do?

A roster next season of Rose/Salmons/Deng/Tyrus/Noah with Miller/Hinrich/Someone else seems pretty good to me.

by paxson43 on Mar 17, 2009 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

It's not the same as having Gordon at shooting guard and Salmons at the small forward.

That team is probably at least 8 wins worse, at the very least, than if you plugged Gordon in, and lopped off Deng.

Ben Gordon (roughly the Bulls best player, there is a case for Salmons now I think too) does not equal Luol Deng.

Yup

Deng would still be a SF who can’t shoot the three or create his own shot or be LOUD on the court in any sense of it, especially in the 4th. With Salmons at SF it has been nice to have those things. And those are things most teams can get out of their starting SF on some level. We’ve just been used to having a SF who can’t do those things for a number of years now. Shifting Salmons to SG and living with Deng as our SF doesn’t mean Deng inherits what Salmons has brought to the SF. He will still be the same Deng and our SF position will still have those weaknesses.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

play deng at the 4?

one of deng’s strengths is rebounding well for his position. move him to the four and he’ll rebound adequately. and at the four, he’ll actually STRETCH the floor, as opposed to at the three where he fails to do those things. just a though. paired with noah or miller it could work.
