Classic Hinrich Story pt. 1-The Next Stockton
I enjoyed reading this (obviously) and i think many people will too, especially if you have been following the bulls since the begining of the decade (as opposed to when we got the number 1 pick) although because most of you are unlike me, you may get more peeved at hinrich for not retaining this ability or praise. Still I hope people do give the article a chance...

Good read.
Makes me long for the days of old. Overperforming is so much more fun to watch than underperforming.

My favorite Hollinger quote
Tony (Chicago): Do you see Kirk Hinrich in the mold of Stockton?
John Hollinger: Well, they’re both white. Struggling to come up with other similarities… Hinrich is much more a scorer than a passer and plays the 2 as much as the 1. Also, Stockton was about 800 times better.

its funny
cuz its true….man i wish i watched more basketball in the days of stockton, never had a chance to understand the game then (cuz i was like a kid who played video games, and with action figures, and thought the bulls were like a superhero basketball team that never lost EVER) I think if i was born 15 years earlier i would have been able to make stockton my favorite player, everything i read and see of him makes me like him….
On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!

Even being as dirty as any of the "Bad Boy" Pistons?
I think if i was born 15 years earlier i would have been able to make stockton my favorite player, everything i read and see of him makes me like him….
Maybe we can (but probably not)?

I never read he was dirty
I heard he was a way better defender than hinrich, who never backed down from anyone. He didnt waver, ever. Not in big game shot situation, not guarding the best player of the best team. He was a terrific passer and ultimately a quiet person, who still learned how to communicate to his team and be a leader without words…..thats what ive always heard about stockton, i never remember hearing anything about him being dirty though….

I think he took full advantage of the looser rules of yesteryear.
He was one I hated (along with MJ and Detroit) with all my heart, because they always seemed to be in the Blazers’ way. But that was a spectacular time to be an NBA fan. I can still remember having to listen to games on the radio (pre-internet), because my idiot family aren’t basketball fans and those were the days of 1 TV in the household – and how tense that would get in tight games because you had to wait for and rely on the play by play without seeing the action. League Pass and internet access are way better, but I still get a little nostalgic for those days…

I recall that Stockton's elbows were as hated as Bill Cartwright's.

Yeah Stockton was considered a dirty player
Great player though!!!

I truely believe that Kirks decline is totally due that game 2 or 3 years ago where he
was playing the heat. He was playing his active defense and grabbed Wade’s wrist and tweaked it. It was a no call and Wade had to leave the game. After the game Riley called him out to the media during the press conference, and ever since then Kirk has been getting called for every little ticky tack foul. He has had to totally change the way he plays defense. He still is way more active then most, but now he is just slightly above average (which, sadly, still makes him the best defender on this team).
I think a lot of his confidence on offense came from success on defense and now that he isn’t having as much success on defense, he isn’t nearly as assertive on the offensive end.
Riley is a scumbag.

I'd like to think that Hinrich isn't that mentally weak.

Anyone else think Kirk hasn't declined?
Kirk’s +/- this year is +12.1! The Bulls have been 7.3 points better than their opponents when he’s on the floor this year.
His TS% is .571, a career high. His steal and block rates are also at career highs, and just last year he had the 3rd best defensive APM among NBA point guards.
I’d argue Kirk is still a top-15 point guard in this league, and maybe (probably?) better than Rose is right now. Imagine if Hinrich was on the Bucks, and Rose went up against Hinrich. Wouldn’t you expect Hinrich to win that battle for now? That said, I’d rather have his 9 million next year going to Gordon, but Kirk can still play.
by YaoPau on Mar 14, 2009 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've been really happy with how he's played this year.
There are so many comments made about him being a poor shooter, I can only assume people aren’t looking at the stats and are going by last year’s reputation. People talk about wanting someone to hit 3s to space things for Derrick – Kirk’s the top 3-point shooter on the team right now and 13th in the NBA (qualified players). His /40 stats aren’t down much, and that all comes down to playing a decreased offensive role on the team. And I’ve been extremely impressed at how he’s handled the change in roles while still helping Derrick out a lot and being more vocal with the team.
I get the whole issue with his contract and salary distribution given what is basically a hard cap with JR. I don’t quite get the anti-Kirk vibe that shows up so often. Even with an entire season of having him on court proving beneficial, and with an entire season of Vinny showing that Derrick and Ben are going to get their minutes, people still start griping the second Kirk comes in the game.

heh whats funnier is this
hinrich comes in, and hits a 3pter, game thread is quiet……hinrich plays solid d, doesnt get the steal but helps create a turnover….game thread is quiet. Hinrich throws a lob for d. rose….game thread: “HELL YEA ROSE!!!”…..hinrich passes the ball to gordon for a three “Hell YEA GORDON>>>PAY THE MAN”……Hinrich hits a mid range, game thread quiet…..hinrich takes a shot and misses it, game thread “WHAT THE FUCK IS HINRICH STILL DOING IN THERE, WHY ISNT ROSE IN!!??? GORDON WAS WIDE OPEN, HINRICH FROZE GORDON OUT!!!!! GOD DAMN TAKE HIM OUT OF THERE VDN YOU STOOGE!!!!”
and i cant help but laugh…..

Backlash from the excessive Hinrich love combined with unreasonable
Gordon hate.
Maybe we can (but probably not)?
by Granny Waiters on Mar 15, 2009 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So its okay to do this?
It reminds me of a streotypical jock mentality, if someone pushes you, you push them back harder….cuz that will solve everything.
Besides lately, the hinrich love has been scarce, if me sue and wjb didnt post at this site, you probably wouldnt see any hinrich love at all. The gordon hate doesnt come from hinrich fans usually, it comes from people who are just put off by gordons play, sort of like how when kobe rumors were flying about many were put off by saying the guy who maybe the best player in the nba is still an ass. Especially in the game threads, it would be hard to find someone other than me sue or wjb posting anything hinrich pro….and also, when gordon hits a big shot, i usually get happy….i wonder if you gordon fans get happy when kirk does something good or you just shrug it off and say “he will screw it up on the next play” or something along those lines…

It is kind of funny that pro-Kirk seems automatically associated with anti-Ben
I like Ben a lot. I hope he decides to sign here, but I’ll understand if he wants to go elsewhere with how things have gone in past negotiations (viewed from his end of things). I think he’s had a great fit with this team needing his offense – and actually I think he and Kirk have benefited hugely from playing with each other, as each compensates somewhat for the others’ weaknesses. I’ve really disliked the Kirk vs. Ben thing that seems to have been around forever, and I’ll be sad if/when either leaves the team and will cheer them on wherever they end up.
So does that mean I’m not really a Kirk fan, if I can’t figure out how to hate Ben at the same time?

The problem is there is no good way to divide up 96 minutes
between Rose, Hinrich and Gordon, and all are paid too highly to be less than 36-min/game players.
Rose is going nowhere, and Gordon is the best 2 guard of the bunch, leaving Hinrich being a negative to the team’s future due to his starter’s salary.
(I am sure all the regulars can repeat the above in their sleep.)
Maybe we can (but probably not)?
by Granny Waiters on Mar 15, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The solution to the problem
isnt insulting kirk everytime he misses a shot? Also rose doesnt make alot at all, and by the time his time comes to make alot kirks contract would be gone (dont get me wrong though, kirk will be gone well before that, if he somehow stays here next season ill be surprised but im thinking the chance is slim)
Also theres a difference of being the odd man out, and just being associated with negative vibe. I will agree that hinrich is the odd man out on this team, eventually. But thats not my beef, my beef is simply what i stated above….hinrich getting hammered for the eventual missed shot….not just by anyone, but by bg fans….

Kirk's 3-point shooting
indeed, I was surprised but you’re correct he’s leading the team in 3p%. It’s his highest mark ever, so I’m not that enthused it’ll sustain…but at least it helps his value.

I think his play
has gotten better, just not in terms of stats though. Look at how he played before, it was dribble dribble, pass or shoot. the best basketball i saw from hinrich was when he returned from injury, and i want to call that hinrich cieling, if he can do that for even 50 games a year, i think he makes it within the top 15 pgs in the league.
Though he hasnt been able to keep that high level up, he still has shown abilities from that short period. For instance, his lead passing has been incredible, as have his bounce passes. His mentality has seemed more pgish, and i think he came into this season thinking he would be more of a pg. I think after rose displayed his abilities and hinrich was injured, it became obvious rose was the pg of the future so hinrich, when his thumb healed, began to work on his shot, which has gradually been getting better at least from 3pt range as the season has gone on.
His defense still isnt where it was awhile ago, and i think thats more because of last year and being called for ticky tack fouls, which is fine….he has began to talk more to refs and be more “captain” like, i think eventually he will be able to get away with a bit more.
The only question is will his improvement mean anything to this team. I still want hinrich to remain a bull, but honestly everyday i look at what he does within 20 min of game time, and wonder what would happen if he was a starter….and he wont be a starter on the bulls anytime soon….so for that reason i wouldnt mind seeing hinrich play for portland where i think he would be in a position to play alot, play to his strengths, and actually help a team out that has the star power to go all the way.

I read just
after the trade deadline that he wants to stay with the Bulls. From reading different articles he has been a huge help to Derrick and Derrick has thanked him in at least two articles (one being his letter to the fans on bulls.com). I’m hoping the organization realizes this and they do keep him. Of course none of us know what will happen.

Hinrich's been fine offensively this year.
His defensive problems are more problems with the interior defense than anything he’s doing.

Hinrich should/can play a meaningful role for the Bulls
And, considering how Luol Deng has fallen from grace with the organization that used to love him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kirk again go through another summer of rumors unscathed, while Deng is shipped to the Bucks or something for expirings.
Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

Salmons seems to be a viable starting 3 for the next few years,
so trading Deng for a better player (e.g. Deng, Tyrus and draft picks for Bosh) would be a move I am in favor of.
Maybe we can (but probably not)?

I am eagerly awaiting the installment where "Kurt" (sic) is traded to the Mavs
for Stackhouse and his non-guaranteed contract followed by the Bulls re-signing Ben Gordon.
