(UPDATE: X-rays negative) Deng out for season?

[Note by your friendly BullsBlogger, 03/01/09 10:26 PM CST: X-Rays were negative. Not sure how much more the MRI can tell, but I'm assuming Deng isn't out of the woods yet -ed. ]

[From the fanposts -ed.]

MRI scheduled for Monday:

When Bulls forward Luol Deng didn't start the third quarter on Saturday, the team called the problem a tibia bone contusion.

Following the game, a more serious possibility was raised. X-rays showed that Deng might have a stress fracture in his lower leg and could be lost for the season. He'll have an MRI exam Monday to further assess the damage.

"It's been bothering me maybe three or four weeks," Deng said. "I thought it was just a sprain. I had a play in the first half where I jumped up and I felt it. I'm not in pain. When I'm walking, when I get on my toes or I'm jumping, I feel it in there a little bit. But I thought it was just a bruise, but it stayed there."

"We've got to wait and get results, but it doesn't sound very good and that's a huge blow to us," he said. "Hopefully it's not and hopefully we can get him back as soon as possible."

That sucks...

But that makes me very glad we traded for Salmons….

I feel a lot more comfortable with him starting the rest of the season than I would have with Nocioni.

Trade for Amare. Keep Deng and Rose. Figure out the rest later.

by kidronmusic on Mar 1, 2009 5:53 AM CST reply actions

Salmons,

will have a huge impact on this team, he is always in the mix, is quick, and can shoot. I might not have made it through the season with noc starting and getting 35 a game. The only think i’m worried about now is who will play behind our starters, wish we had thabo still but we can hopefully find a cheap vet minimum that can maybe keep us under the tax (LT expert?)

by BooRad16 on Mar 1, 2009 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

We better hurry and sign someone to back up Salmons at the three.

Otherwise were going to see alot of Kirk at the three.

Rather than go small, now we can “go big”

Hinrich, Salmons, Tim Thomas, Noah, Miller FTW!

Thomas is hurt also,

and do you really want Thomas guarding LBJ or PP.

If we use him as a backup at SF

that will not happen as much. When LBJ or PP are out on the floor we could have Salmons out there and when their not then have TiT

I would rather play Tyrus Thomas at 3.

If we are going big…Tim Thomas still does not need additional minutes…though I suspect since he is Vinny’s buddy, he will get some time there…

Besides, was anyone questioning Deng’s toughness anyway? I’d like for him to be better at basketball, but I’ve never had a problem with his toughness.

at least there is a reason for his recent poor play.

Maybe we can expect him to return to the level he was playing in January. I would seriously consider banning him from international play if I was the Bulls.

at least the part about this being perhaps the reason for his poor play this season.

It’d be a real tough sell. But it was something I was thinking about even before we knew what this was. Even tho they arent directly related, until he proves that he can help carry the Bulls while carrying GB on his back, Im not sure he should be doing both.

I'm just at a loss for words ...

Still I believe Deng can be oft.. injuried much thru his career?

Because, he’s has fragile hands, wrist, legs and ankles.

He must take time out for target strength training

He needs to spend much time strengthing these parts of his body so
he will be able to endue the physical demands of NBA baseball.

I’m so tired of complaining about Paxson awarding contracts to guys
because he loves their nondescript personalities rather than to him who has produced
consistently (including staying healthy-conditioning) more during his years
on the team.

Vinny has a new excuse for losses

The absense of one of our captains. Thank god now we have Salmons. A lineup of rose, BG, Salmons, Tyrus and Noah, with Miller and – what the heck – Hinrich coming of the bench, is pretty good

I highly doubt Deng is going to leave

I bet Paxson and Del Negro are going to spin this in that he’s been injured this whole year, and that next year he’ll be 100% healthy.

Injury prone

It’s his body type. He’s African, Sudanese to be exact. Not exactly people of strong stock. Look at Manute Bol, same tribe as Deng. Very tall but stringy and not muscular.

Maybe if Deng was a workout animal like Ben Gordon, he wouldn’t get hurt so damn much

by bennythebull on Mar 2, 2009 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

He's being

Paid like a 2nd or 3rd option but playing more like a 4th option behind (Rose, Gordon, and right now Tyrus) and might move down further if John Salmons keeps this up.

That’s a concern that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Overall though I do think Lu-yawn’s tradable….presuming he is healthy and plays to his strengths down the stretch.

by majoyenrac on Mar 2, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

He is not being utilized

properly on this team. Coaching perhaps??? I suppose that would require coaching to make that argument…. We don’t really have any.
Lu is not playing at the level he was a couple years ago, but his numbers (imo) are a perfect example of a talented player not having their strengths put to use.
I guess it is all a process….

"I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying." -- Michael Jordan

by bennythebull on Mar 3, 2009 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

So what?

I am not saying I am a huge fan of Luol, but what you should not be complaining about is that he cannot create his own shot! Sure that would be nice, however we don’t want a bunch of one-on-one players. We want people that can work well with Rose. The biggest complaint about Deng is that his play has not improved with Rose running the show.

Of course as always, this could also be a coaching problem :)

by DRose01 on Mar 2, 2009 7:53 AM CST reply actions

haha.

well it clearly is a coaching issue. luol should have been more involved in the offense from the beginning, cause then he started like crap. then when coming back from injury, he showed he really can work with rose… and the presumably his leg started bothering him and he began playing like shit again.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Mar 2, 2009 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

Luol

Needs to be a more vocal leader on and off the court. I mean he was aggressive a bit at the start of the Houston game and it seemed that Joakim was the leader, padding him on the back for his great effort…..why is Lu-yawn a captain?

by majoyenrac on Mar 2, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

because the players vote the captains?

the whole “captain” thing is ridiculous. the other players are the ones voting! if they consider their leaders to be kirk and luol, that’s their business. it’s not some organizational ploy.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Mar 2, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Oh I know that

But I’m wanting to see him live up to that vote.

He’s a good player (Luol) I wish he was more aggressive and didn’t tend to dissappear like he does, but when he plays well we’re a much different team.

I just don’t like the fact that he’s still taking a back seat.

by majoyenrac on Mar 2, 2009 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

So we should expect little to none production from Loul for the rest of the season :(
