Game Preview #51: Chicago Bulls at Dallas Mavericks
With wins in four of their last five games, the Bulls are playing as well as they have at any point this year. At the end of a seven-game road trip, they roll into Dallas to face the Mavs, who have been doing pretty well for themselves lately. They had a little hiccup on Thursday against the depleted Jazz, but won four in a row before that, including victories over the Magic and Blazers.
Here are some matchups to watch:
Derrick Rose vs. Jason Kidd
The Mavs’ win streak started when Rick Carlisle decided to give Kidd control of offensive play-calling. Kidd, of course, is a great passer and QB at the point guard spot, so it helps to have that Dallas team that’s so dependent on their plodding style comfortable with their pace. But at this point in his career, Kidd is a defensive liability—Deron Williams was a one-man wrecking crew against him. This will be a test of Derrick’s point guard senses: Will he be able to exploit Kidd’s defensive shortcomings, while stopping from making in impact on the boards (an area in which he’s killed this team in the past)? And will Rose have the awareness to keep pushing the ball against a team that isn’t comfortable running-and-gunning?
Bulls bigs vs. Dirk Nowitzki
This is a potentially dangerous matchup for the Bulls. Joakim Noah has the size and quickness to deal with Dirk’s variety of skills, but when he’s on Dirk, there’s no one else with the size to take their centers. If Tyrus is engaged defensively, he can do a decent job, but it’s when we start putting in the subs that we get trouble. Nocioni’s effort doesn’t make up for 5 inches, Gray has the agility of a cement truck, and if we try to play small, Deng doesn’t have the muscle to stop him in the post.
Luol Deng vs. Josh Howard
Deng and Howard are very similar players: Long, perimeter-oriented small forwards that do a little big of everything, a great complimentary player but probably not a go-to-guy. But look at the numbers—Deng is playing better. Howard’s scoring more, but Luol grabs more boards and gets his numbers without needing the ball in his hands anywhere near as much. And Luol’s season stats are dragged down by his terrible November—his excellent play since returning from injury has been discussed elsewhere. So while I expect this matchup to end up mostly in a wash, keep your eye on which of the two players seems to have the edge.
Thanks to the Mavericks’ improved play, AccuScore has them as a 70% favorite. But if there’s anything we’ve learned from this road trip, it’s that this Bulls team is full of surprises. If we have real aspirations of one of those last playoff spots, tonight is an opportune time to make a statement.

Other key matchup: Vinny Del Negro vs. Drew Gooden's playing time
Can he fight his urges to play the bulkier, veterany Gooden 35 mins tonight?!?!
Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!
Is he definitely playing?
Last I read that groin is causing so much pain he’s scared it might be a misdiagnosed sports hernia or something.
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
No clue. God, I hope not.
If he’s hurt and Bulls win, I might credit God with the victory.

ya saw this too
I think he is still out. Hopefully he is just healthy enough to be traded!
drew should get about 25 minutes backing up noah and TT...no big deal...
because noah and TT will still get their 34 min tonight…unless vinny decides to play the big slow motion
Ahhh, you're forgetting the 10-15 minutes Nocioni will get at the PF spot as well.
even 10 minutes from Nocioni and gooden splitting 10 at PF and the rest at C makes less than 28 minutes available for THomas. And I think that’s the bare minimum those guys get in a normal rotation. Thomas wasn’t get more than 25 mpg until Gooden was hurt. If both are healthy, I’m worried that Del Nego would keep a similar rotation.

yea ur right...im kinda hoping vinny doesnt use noch at the PF tonight...
wishful thinking , i know……but he’s been decent with his rotations lately…. ahh what am i saying…..our only hope is that rew gooen doesnt play
I'm irked
I just realized this is one of the few games I won’t get because of the stupid NBALP blackout rules. Yet, we aren’t really in the Dallas market so won’t get the free TV either.
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
It won't be on NBALP?

Apparently it's going to be the Mavs feed, and I'm in the Dallas blackout area
It’s the curse of living in Tulsa.
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
lol - our claim to fame, a punchline on Friends
Tulsa’s really not bad at all – I’ve been here over 10 years now and would be content to stay if my whole family wasn’t on the west coast.
It’s the perpetual bombardment with Dallas and Kansas City sports teams that drives me crazy!

Another storyline...
we need T2 and Thabo to keep playing well…if they start tanking, our chances of Amare tank as well…

Speaking of Amare
The Mavs kind of have “Amare Syndrome” I think. In that if theyre offense isnt working then they start quitting on D too(Hence a lot of them blowing teams out, or getting blown out themselves). Our defensive effort, especially early could be a huge factor.
This is the first Bulls game I've looked forward to in forever

Yeah, it's kind of nice to be actually excited beforehand
I always look forward to them because I’d rather watch basketball than anything else on TV, but there’s a big difference between hoping they don’t embarrass themselves and being excited to see them do well.
Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!
Yea, I can always watch basketball, but this is a good test to see if we're really playing well.

Weird things afoot in the basketball universe tonight, so far
Clips up 14 on the Hawks in Atlanta, New Jersey up 14 on Denver. Lots of time left in both games, obviously, but maybe it will be one of those nights for sub-.500 teams.
