Seriously.

Vinny is a retarded basketball mind. The problem wasn’t so much Gordon, it was that there was no help defense in the lane.

If the Mavericks were to have no interior defense, Gordon would score about 80% of the time on Wright. A lot of that scoring was on Tyrus/Noah for being nowhere close to the paint.

Um... you don't need help defense if you keep the guy in front of you.

Help defense is often there to cover one’s mistakes.

don't mind Andrew, he's just here to make excuses for Ben at every turn

and find fault with everything Kirk does. Which isn’t always a bad thing because Ben > Kirk, but the bias he shows is ridiculous.

as much as bg needed to play defense there

he does make a point about there being no help defense. i made the same comment while watching.

If Rose's jumper is going, he won't drive to the rim AT ALL. And that sucks.

for every jumper Derrick Rose makes, I die a little inside because

he’s been relying more and more on that jumper and he’s got to be more aggressive to truly dominate.

He can’t drive every time. He needs a jumper that will make him more of a threat in the paint.

by NittanyCub on Feb 7, 2009 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

He has been taking that jumper just about every time. He has almost completely stopped driving

this is my concern. I realize he can’t drive every time, but he doesn’t drive at all anymore.

Selective vision?

He drives almost as much as a bus driver. Anyways, he’s a 20 year old rook, give him time. His slashing to the lane is practically his bread and butter, I doubt he’ll stop using it.

by NittanyCub on Feb 7, 2009 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

Not selective vision, the guy has been shooting those floaters and mid-range Js

a lot more frequently as the season has gone on. He’s been cutting out his slashing. He’s a 20 year old rook…so is Russell Westbrook and that motherfucker gets to the line like no one’s business.

Westbrook gets to the line twice as frequently as Rose

I’m not saying Westbrook is better (although he might be when you factor in defense, because Rose is a miserable defender so far), but I’m saying he is a lot better at driving and getting contact and that’s something I really want Derrick to bring to his game. It’s what superstars do.

You're just not watching the games.

It’s clearly happening. You can see it just by the contrast of when Rose is in there. When Rose is in there, and Gordon is the guy who the play should be going to with a pass, Rose makes the pass.

When Hinrich is in there, he has such a difficult time passing it to Gordon. Larry Hughes? He would make the pass to Gordon if he should have.

There’s a reason why Gordon’s been having a harder time getting the ball since Hinrich’s come back.

I watch every game. I bought LP Broadband just so I could watch them all.

You are a huge Gordon homer and it’s no secret. Just try to be a little more objective, sheesh. Kirk had an open jumper on the fast break, Ben takes that shot all the time. You can argue that he’s not as good a shooter and so it’s not as good a shot which is true, but when you have that open a look you take it.

That play was so bad.

Gordon saw Dampier on him and was like, “Yes, Yes, Yes!”…drives left and the Mavericks were like “No, No, No”.

Gordon needs to realize that the Mavericks remember him kicking their asses for 35 points earlier this year. A lot of that coming from driving. When Ben drives this game, they’re probably going to meet him with some help defense.

Ben really doesn't turn it over all that much for a guy that handles the ball as much as he does

it’s just that the way he loses the ball is so embarassing. I think at least 75% of his turnovers come from being stripped going to the lane or from just dribbling the ball off of his foot.

Well, he's a good combo guard.

He came as a SG, but has been playing PG and doing well. The problem is that he turns it over a little too much to think he’ll be a great PG and doesn’t shoot well enough to be a great SG. He plays really good defense, though. If he can show that he can handle the ball better before the draft, he might be a legit PG prospect and drafted high.

Gonzaga could have been a true title contender if a couple of their players were more aggressive.

They’re still really good, but Heytvelt and Downs have the athletic ability and skills to pound inside and drive aggressively, respectively, and their both seniors. But they never developed those parts of their games. And if Daye would go inside, he’d be way better, too.

Alas, they’ll be another Elite 8 team.

Why are Bulls

switching on every screen? Noah and Thomas truly do bother Dirk, I think that’s the key to beating DAL. You want to switch sometimes, but Dirk will feast if he knows he’ll get Ben and Derrick to shoot over. I think if they switch a guard, then they need to double him right away. (Isn’t that the book on him since GSW/playoffs?)

at least you're objective.

Noce goes for 13pts in 4-9 shooting (just under 50%), with 3-4 from 3pt land(!), 6 rebounds and a steal in 22mins of PT and he sucks.

Luol “72M” Deng goes for 10 points in 3-15 (that’s 20%), 5 rebounds, 4 assist, 2 steals and 1 block in 45mins and you have not said a word about him.

Andrew, go on being a Gordon fan. Your blind-love of him is a perfect balance for this guy’s blind-hate.

I commented on his bad game, jesus christ. It was further down. Noc had better numbers

but had his usual terrible defense. Deng did a good job of limiting Josh Howard’s effectiveness, whereas Noc made stupid fouls, including his idiotic technical which ruined our early game momentum and sparked Dallas. Dallas is a team with a history of folding when they get down, but Noc let them back in it when we were up 9 and looked to be pulling away. The dude sucks. He had a solid game statistically, but he was his usual terrible self on D. You clearly didn’t watch the game and just looked at the box score. Stop trolling you frickin’ douche.

Hes not a locker room cancer. I explained that

Marion was a bitch. Sarver is a bitch. Kerr is a bitch. ALso he DOES REBOUND! 8 a game is good! He scores 20 ppg in a bad offensive system where shaq is screwing with his natural talent! We have Noah/TT to block shots depending on who we trade. Have you ever watched PHX play ball in the last 3 years????

ALso, right now Stat has reason to be pissed. They got rid of D’Antoni. Screwed with his game by adding shaq and completely changed the offensive system and he IS STILL avg 20 8 and 2 with a +22 eff rate. WTF else do you want?!?!

I've been wondering about that, too

Vinny does all these offensive and defensive subs at the end of tight games – well, if he’s looking for the best defensive 5 he can put out there, Derrick needs to be on the bench. I don’t think it would kill his confidence – just be a challenge to get up to speed defensively.

i thought that rose did alright on defense

although a lineup of kirk, thabo, deng, tyrus, and joakim on the defensive end would’ve been nice…….again i think rose should get these opportunities….were a losing team that will be happy making it to the playoffs, this is a rebuilding kind of season…so rose should get more opportunity than anyone else and should be allowed more leeway so long as its for his betterment in the future.

I'll bitch about whomever I feel like bitching about, thank you.

Derrick Rose has a lot invested in him and if we’re going to be a good basketball team, he has to improve two areas of his game. They are the ones I’ve mentioned over and over and over again. He’s gotta get to the line, but more importantly, he’s got to play some frickin’ defense. He’s a very bad defender. He doesn’t even get into a defensive stance and for the most part doesn’t look like he knows where he is supposed to be on that end of the court. That is an aspect that I partially blame on the coaches for not holding him accountable and telling him where to be. But some of this is also on Derrick; just watch him on defense some time, he never even gets into a defensive stance, he stands straight up and loosely follows his man around.

it was our guards overdibbling. Rose, hinrich and gordon were all guilty of it this game….hinrich did start it, but when he stopped then rose started and at times gordon did it too…..uh ball movement isnt a cliche….its a fundemental…im dissapointed…

I meant at the end of the 4th quarter when the Bulls were up 3. No way Rose or Noce or Ben

should have been in. Noah is 7’ tall. Thabo 6’ 7". Kirk is twice the defender that Ben is. Just for the last 17 seconds of the 4th. Derrick is one of the worst defenders in the NBA and his shot wasn’t falling in the 4th quarter. HE’S A FRIKKING ROOKIE. IT’S OK TO PUT A VETERAN IN AT CRUNCH TIME ONCE IN AWHILE. And when the Bulls needed a score, why the Hell not have Gordon, who had the hot hand take the shot or at least draw a foul? Vinny lost this game in the final 17 seconds.

Now we’re 2 games out of the 8th spot. We needed and had this game. Derrick is definitely the goat…if he just stays with Kidd, we win this game. He has to pick up his D, no excuses, I don’t care if he’s a rookie. Look at Westbrook and Mayo, they both D up. Hell at this point, Westbrook is the better player….not as explosive as Rose but at least he plays on both ends.

by C Smoove on Feb 7, 2009 10:18 PM CST reply actions

well, Rose did give up the three that sent it to OT by not being where he was supposed to be

on D. He was just floating. He’s the worst defensive player on the Bulls team which is a bad defensive outfit, so that is to say, he’s a horrid defender. Westbrook does play D and has a higher PER right now, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Westbrook is the better all around player right now.

the point is tyrus works on his perimeter game a lot (perhaps too much)

His shot is pretty good out to 18 ft. He has good form. I would be suprised if he isnt shooting 35/36% from downtown in a couple of years. Why is that unreasonable??? maybe not that one particular missed layup, but it's tough to beat a good team

when you’re third option on offense goes 3-15 from the field and only grabs 5 rebounds in 41 minutes. Luol has to play better for the Bulls to win games.

cause he had a stretch where he was routinely grabbing 8 or 9 boards in 35 or so minutes of PT, tonight he had just 5 in 41 minutes and the last game against NOH he only had 4. Bad shooting nights happen, bad rebounding nights are usually more about a lack of effort.

by fundamentallysound on Feb 7, 2009 10:45 PM CST up reply actions

ya

part of that was there was a stretch mid game when VDN put him on Dirk. He does a lot of things pretty well when he plays the 4, but his rebounding is generally a lot worse unless its a mismatch in his favor. But he has to get better at working his way into the flow of things and getting all aspects of his game going when he starts out slow.

and not a single free throw. He wants to be an elite player, he needs to draw contact. That’s it. One frakking thing. Draw contact. As big, strong and fast as he is, it shouldn’t be hard. He does that, he’s pretty much a star.

anyone watching these dirk highlights??

Hes always being guarded by our guards after a pick and roll. That may be the gameplan, but its obvious that our guards do a terrible job of fighting through screens, thus they HAVE to switch and that causes havoc. Thats why dirk had such a great night. If we really want to improve, then we should only practice fighting through screens for the next couple of weeks.

At the very least use Gordon as a decoy.

Vinny has to realize that any team with a half decent scouting report is not going to leave Gordon wide open at the end of games. He has hit something like the 2nd or 3rd most game winners since he’s been in the league. Other teams know that.

So leaving Gordon standing in the corner is going to do nothing. That just makes it easy on the other team because they just need to stand there and be ready to contest Gordon’s shot if they do pass him the ball…but they also can play some deny defense on Gordon.

If they want to use Gordon as a decoy, get Gordon running around like a mad man, so the other team thinks that the Bulls are trying to get Gordon the ball. Don’t just have him stand on the wing or corner.

Kevin Garnett, Shaquille O'neal, etc.

Trades happen in the NBA. Shaq got traded to Miami and helped them win a championship.

Kevin Garnett, same thing. Things fell apart in Minnesota, but that didn’t mean Garnett was a bad player.

Amare clearly doesn’t want to be there, and being on a team like the Bulls would be good for him. He would be the featured player on the block. He’d probably open up the game a ton for Gordon/Rose as well.

If we’re worried about defense, we can do a follow up trade for Tyson Chandler. It’s just a matter of JR being willing to commit to the money.

The NBA equivalent

It makes no sense to me either. And the refs HATE to blow whistle, so forget about getting to the line, unless your name is Manu (or Rudy!).

It's also helpful to play defense. They gave up

10 points in less than 4 minutes of overtime. Then Dirk got an easy fade jumper (his trademark- to the left) on Noc.

And they have been defending better, that’s why it’s been so much more fun to watch. But more is needed…

Very tough to get calls on the road. When Dirk was going bad, it seemed there was a scheme and it was being followed. Ty and Jo had him out of rhythm. But then Carlisle turned to his bench, which (typically for an NBA team at home) outplayed the Bulls. I normally don’t get all over the coach for missing matchups, But I would think going into the game VDN would want to have TT or Noah on the floor whenever Dirk was. And NOT switching with the guards, please.

I think people have to get off Rose and his D. He’s tryin’, and that means it’ll get better. He had Dallas’ crap defense completely broken down and at the Bulls mercy in the paint. But not enough player movement (court chemistry yet) to take advantage. It’ll come.

D Rose will be great someday but his D stinks. Why should we get off his case?

The fans are just as hard on Noce, Gooen and Gordon. and Derrick is by far our weakest link on defense. Sometimes trying isn’t good enough. It is the coach’s responsibility when the game is on the line, to play the lineup that gives them the best chance to win. VDN blew it in the 4th quarter when he failed to substitue properly at the end.

Fuck that

Derrick’s D is shit. He is an athletic freak, even a minimum of effort would have him as an ok defender. So get off that. He needs to get in a stance and go after guys. He has to step up his D to at least mediocre level.

He's lost on defense.

I don’t think it’s all effort. Like earlier in the game, he was chasing around Jason Terry with some good hustle, but he just had trouble chasing him around.

It's a combination of a lack of effort and lack of understanding about where to be on the floor

he doesn’t get into a good defensive stance and on top of that, he isn’t usually in the right spot on the floor (which is what happened on the big Kidd 3, he was just not anywhere close to where he should have been).

Deng 3 for 15 for the game. D Rose was 2 for 11 from the 4th quarter on.

It’s time to go back to old reliable Ben Gordon. With Rose on the floor, I don’t think he will be turning the ball over as much as in the past because teams will no longer be able to triple team him. VDN has to come up with more than one play at crunch time.

Hey come-on...this game was more good than bad

Thinking back a few weeks, we would have been ecstatic to see them play this well in Dallas….lost in OT with Dirk finally going off nothing to be ashamed of.

Gotta give it up for when the team actually shows improvement….as they have of late. As much as I wasn’t expecting it, there’s a lot of good news with this team…to the point where we are now thinking it’s a terrible result if they actually lose a game like this.

I’m calling for a moment of silence to appreciate that we’ve now got a team worth watching again. Much better than the crap team getting booed off the floor at UC. And T2 breaking out is more important than picking up a game on 8th place.

There’s something in the glass tonight…looks half full to me.

by Cholla on Feb 8, 2009 1:44 AM CST reply actions

It was a good game

but i was sure before the game even begun that we should have won. The bulls came into the game with the right mentality, but after we built up a lead, in the second quarter you could see that we relaxed a bit and the mavericks bench came at us with all they had. That’s disappointing, and though its easy (and fun?) to point fingers at individual players and their flaws the truth is the team in its entirety failed to come together and step it up. Losing is alright when you do everything you can, but when you lose a very winnable game, its disheartening. That’s why it became so negative in this thread.

Ben Gordon was awful last night

Kirk and Deng played poorly as well, but Ben Gordon killed us on both ends of the floor. Turnovers on offense and then sitting on the floor to complain about the non calls while your 4 guys run back to play defense and get forced to foul.

Despite Ben Gordon playing for the Mavs last night, we were still in this game. The early missed free throws hurt us at time when we were on pace to build a 15 point lead while resting our starters.

Jason Kidd one shot all game and it was huge. But his defense on Gordon was a key difference.

When the 3rd quarter rolled along you could tell we were not going to win this game. Where we had chances to put away the Mavs for good we failed. When we had to chances to turn key stops into free throw attempts we took jumpers. When we were getting some bad calls against us our guys sat around and complained about it. Noc’s technical foul for his early complaining? Yea, I’d like to have that 1 point giveaway back to avoid the OT.

Let me add

It sounds crazy, but Ben Gordon can score 28 points AND be biggest liability in our 5 man units. Way to make Barea post a career night Ben Gordon. You should have had 40, but I would have been happy with 20 and something resembling defense.

12/31: Fire Vinny Del Negro.

by NBA Observer on Feb 8, 2009 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

Hinrich was the one who really let Barea have a career night.

I chronicled this in my game recap.

Kirk Hinrich was the one who gave up those 5 points to Barea in the third. In the fourth, he gave up 4 more points to Barea, including an easy layup that brought the game o within 3 points. Barea also had that 1 point on a free throw after Hinrich came in for Gordon, in which Barea drew the foul.

So Barea scored his last 10 points on Hinrich. Then going back in the game log,…Barea had 4 straight points on Gordon, which prompted Vinny to pull gordon. So the score is 10 on Hirnich 4 on Gordon right now.

Looking back at the replay now….Noah switched onto Barea, and Barea drives past Noah and makes a running shot. So 2 points on Noah now. Nocioni switched onto Nocioni. Didn’t come out to the three point line some reason, dared him to shoot, and Barea hit a 3.

Then in the second quarter, Tyrus Thomas fouled Barea on a fastbreak, and Barea hit 1 free throw.

So:

Kirk Hinrich – 10 points
Ben Gordon – 4 points
Andres Nocioni – 3 points
Joakim Noah – 2 points
Tyrus Thomas – 1 point

That’s how Barea got his 20 point game. I’d blame Hinrich more so than Gordon. But that’s just me.

When the evidence says so, yes.

Ben Gordon is just getting picked apart for his bad defense on Barea because it was so demonstrative because Vinny pulled Gordon right after that.

Hinrich was by far the worst on Barea, and didn’t get a stop when it mattered most.

How about giving

Kirk credit for stopping Wright after he had scored 2 quick baskets on Gordon? In fact I don’t think Wright made another shot attempt while Kirk was on him. Spare me the no help defense theory you posted in here last night. If Ben had kept in front of Wright he wouldn’t have scored two quick baskets on him.

by sue369 on Feb 8, 2009 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

hes gets no credit

for TWO defensive stops. ummm…thats the only reason hes out there…and he let a midget kill him. If Hinrich isnt playing defense…then he doesnt need to be out there, because we all know he wouldnt be able to score 28 like Ben. Plus they had the same number of turnovers.

JR prefers Hinrich to the superior (basketball player) Ben Gordon.

Why, one can only speculate.

Maybe we can?

by Granny Waiters on Feb 8, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

What does this have to do with the discussion at all?

They both played poorly on defense, there’s not much blame to go around.

I hate this notion that if 1 player is bad on defense, but his sub plays worse, it’s somehow allowable. Rose is routinely awful on D, Gordon is hit or miss, and Kirk’s been either really good or really weak on that end since coming back.

do you account for how long each of them was matched up on Barea?

because say if Hinrich was on Barea for 20 minutes and Ben was on him for 5, then Ben’s 5 minute stint on him was much worse than Kirk’s 20 minutes. I don’t know if that was the case, but it’s something you have to factor in rather than just looking at how many points he scored on each.

Everytime Barea or any guard scores points "on" our big men

you have to consider it at least partially the responsibility of our guard who should have been on him. Its the guard who couldnt fight thru the screen or get around fast enough to recover and forced the switch. Its gonna happen, but BG and Derrick basically NEVER get thru the screen and Hinrich very rarely does.
