Bulls 105, Rockets 102

Sorry about the lack of a game thread today. No excuses, just spaced on doing it before heading to the UC tonight.

Obviously a fantastic finish for the Bulls, it's amazing what a team can do when they have a competent lineup out there to close a game. That Derrick Rose kid, I think he can help us in 4th quarters!

d-rose playing like that is just amazing…
i really loved how he succeeded with the lack of some very obvious foul calls

with every game

it seems more and more evident that Ben Gordon and Derrick Rose can’t co-exist on the same court at the same time

by Evil Pax on Feb 28, 2009 10:38 PM CST reply actions

That is right. Gordon is not going to defer to Rose, Gordon does not intend to defer to Rose...

Gordon is jealous of Rose….so Gordon got to go. Notice in the games, whenever Derrick Rose makes a good play that Ben comes right behind him and tries to do the same thing ….as to say…I can do whatever you can do.

I don't think so really

I think its more about pulling his weight.

by Camry on Feb 28, 2009 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

Gordon jealous of Rose? Without Gordon's play, you don't win this game.

Contrary to popular belief, Rose didn’t win it by himself. Gordon scored double figures in the 4th too. If that’s jealousy then Rose needs to be more jealous himself and play like he did tonight more often.

You know whether you like Gordon or not and think Rose is the greatest player ever

The fact remains that you’re going to need someone that can score points in volume from long range to play alongside Rose. A guy scores 16 effective points and most of them when it counts, looks pretty darn good to me.

by Dils on Feb 28, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

I just think its a lot of speculation

Hes a scorer so hes going to be that way I think and we’ve seen a lot of times players on this team not stick with the hot hand. This time around Gordon was producing as well though. He sparked the run I had thought. If Gordon does nothing and says go Rose for 6 minutes I’m not sure if we win this game. I think he was just pulling his own weight.

well, someone has to play the backup 3 minutes

and i’d prefer it NOT to be a 3 guard lineup of rose, gordon, and hinrich. which means it has to be one of the thomases playing the 3.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Feb 28, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Why not give Tyrus some burn at the 3. They had him guarding Lebron, so why can’t he try and guard the rest of the Non-LeBron 3’s out there? I would guess that he would still be the same as he is now on offense.

by BNeL21 on Feb 28, 2009 11:17 PM CST up reply actions

i haven't liked it in the past

but i’d certainly do it in a pinch. it takes away from his natural weak side help if he’s too far out on the perimeter, and with noah and miller in the lane he’ll be brought out on offense also. however, if he’s able to hit a midrange shot with consistency, he’ll be ok. i hated him at the 3 last year but his shot continues to improve.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Feb 28, 2009 11:20 PM CST up reply actions

Forgot to mention...

I thought Tyrus did as good of a job on LeBron as anyone on our team, and a lot of other teams for that matter. So my point I guess was that if he can guard 3’s, he should be able to play some minutes there.

by BNeL21 on Feb 28, 2009 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

but yeah, it means salmons exclusively at the 3 prob

which does mean more hinrich… sucks…

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

And if he sucks, let’s just play Lindsay Hunter. [No, seriously.]

No one person’s opinion or analysis is perfect and espn has lot of contributors, so you can here many perspectives. Also, you learn who you agree with most and read them most frequently. That's because Beasley is crazy!

He’s an out there dude. He isn’t afraid to say crazy things. It’s like Arenas (not quite as crazy or funny) but you get my drift. Rose is soft spoken, defers all the time, humble to a fault and is generally only a few steps up from a Corbin Dallas interview with Chris Tucker from Fifth Element. We love him because he is awesome and a Bull. But fans of other teams don’t care about him saying that “Gooden is a great guy and he has really helped me a lot this year and I just try to listen to all the guys and learn all I can” in a aw shucks kind of manner. It’s not good television/entertainment, which is what sports is.

I say we move Deng this offseason.

In addition to being pretty inconsistent, this latest injury is only adding to the “injury prone” label for Deng. I feel like he is COMPLETELY replaceable. First of all, I hope Luol Deng recovers. As much as I harp on him, I do not want the man to not be able to play basketball. I wish him a speedy recovery. But I hope the Bulls look to deal Deng this offseason.

In order to move him, somebody would have to be willing to take that contract

which is no given in this NBA. Deng’s contract is rapidly becoming one of the worst in the league.

Well, I see what you're saying but he was NEVER as good as Manning...

…in college or in the pros. Lest we forget, Manning did average about 20 pts and 7 rbds for about 4 of the first 7 years of his pro career before the injury bug bit him.

Deng is our team's Shane Battier

As in an efficient, sneaky, non-stat good player. Unfortunately, he’s not as good as Shane at that, and he makes way more money. He’s not even 3rd scorer right now, which he needs to be. He really needs to actually work on his game over the summer and cutback on all the humanitarian goodness.

I will probably get a lot of heat for this comment.

Luol Deng is the new Andres Nocioni. He’s one of the beloved Bulls players who everyone thinks is delightful. However, eventually everyone will realize that he’s just okay, and that we should trade him.

by sweetneyisfat on Mar 1, 2009 12:36 AM CST up reply actions

The difference:

Luol Deng is OK as a starter/defender. As those things, Nocioni is flat-out garbage.

by sweetneyisfat on Mar 1, 2009 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

Two big problems with Deng

1. He seems to be a dreadful fit for Vinnie’s “system”. This can be fixed by replacing him with a coach that understands better how to use him.

2. I once got shit for comparing him to the “injury prone” Gerald Wallace. Well, now Deng’s playing on a contract that couldn’t get fully inusured, and has yet another long-term injury. Maybe we can trade him for Greg Oden? :D

by Sports2 on Mar 1, 2009 10:31 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I'd like to see Deng work again in a real offense under a real coach.

He’s a third option and if he plays like he did when he was 21 (which, being 23 shouldn’t be unattainable), and you know, the last non-turmoil season, I’ll take it.

Give me 22+ from Rose, 17-18 each from Deng and Thomas, with Thomas being more of a facilitator and Deng getting his off of cuts and catch-and-shoots, 12 from Noah and another 10-15 from a SG and I’m happy with it.

I mean, if they want to start over with Rose, Thomas and Noah, sure, whatever. But I still think a 24-year-old healthy Deng (allowing that he’s probably never going to play more than 60 games anymore) is a top 7 or 8 2-way small forward in the league. You want him to be a leader and a franchise player, you’ll keep wanting. You want him to be the third option, scrappy guy who does all the little things like a Joakim Noah type, and you’ll be more than satisfied.

23-3 run to close the game.

If this right (cbssports game flow says so), not only was it a 34-14 4th quarter, but it was 99-82 with 5:58 left in the game. That’s a hell of finishing a run. Great win, but now it feels like a lot of random things must have gone our way.

Bulls

In my humble basketball opinon the Bulls can make the playoffs if they bench Ben Gordon if you notice the ball flows much better when he is out of the game. The big guys (Noah, Thomas) play a lot better when there not trying to run and chase down his 1 on 4 shot attempts I know Gordon is playing for a contract but it’s a team and yes there is no I in team and ain’t no we either….Go Bulls

I Completely Agree

Winning one game doesn’t make him a quality starter. He is a black hole on offense. I think part of the reason Deng’s game has suffered is that he gets his shots within the flow of the offense, plays a lot of minutes with Ben, and once the ball goes to Ben it doesn’t come out.

by MrPants on Mar 1, 2009 1:37 AM CST up reply actions

Two Things

(1) I can’t find the stats on how many touches he had last night, but Gordon played under 30 minutes so 13 is not an amazingly low number of shots. (2) His shooting percentage is in no way relevant to my point that his shots come outside of the bulls offensive flow and negatively effect Deng’s game (unless you are attempting to make the point that over the course of the season that Gordon’s 1-on-1 play is a more efficient mode of scoring than Dengs shots within the offense, but that still doesn’t really oppose my statement and is terribly supported by the shooting statistics from a single game).

Just 4 games in, mind you, but Salmons PER is 23.0 as a Bull.

Amazing, that the Bulls have upgraded their SF slot with a guy pushing 30 that was looking like a journeyman.

This is probably unwarranted, but with Deng’s injury I’ve noticed how much of nothing he’s done so far. His TSperc, eFGperc, ASTperc, TRBperc, USGperc, and Drtg are all at their worst of his career this season. It doesn’t make sense that his worth isn’t increasing as he hits his prime, which makes me hope that he’s been severely nagged by this injury throughout this whole year; because if this is the consistent type of output the Bulls are going to get from Deng until his contract is up, it’s going to suck ass being a fan.

by NittanyCub on Mar 1, 2009 1:01 AM CST up reply actions

Sorry no link for this.

But I read tonight a comment from Deng saying that he went up for a ball and he felt something. He knew it was there before, but he thought it was just a strain. So who knows, maybe it was a hair-line fracture that was causing him to be tentative and suck these last couple games and it just got bad enough tonight to warrant x-rays. I hope he gets all the way healed and can play like the old Luol.

by Unrealcity on Mar 1, 2009 2:51 AM CST up reply actions

This team is dumb as hell

Dumbest team in the league, right up there with the Knicks. We have to be down 17 to REALIZE that we have to give the ball to Derrick Rose. We NEED injuries so that our players can play better. We have a GM that needs to INSTRUCT our coach to put the best player in the game in the fourth quarter…….all this stuff is common sense.

I mean, how can you not even have common sense??? That’s what I don’t get.

And from the looks of this game, we definitely could have won the NJ and Wizards games if Rose was just a bit more AGGRESSIVE

salmons

at the 3 opens up the floor a little more offensively than deng. if he can do an adequate job of defending the opposing 3, he could arguably be a net improvement over deng. i’m a deng fan, but one of my biggest concerns with him (other than his lack of lateral quickness) was his inability to shoot from the behind the three point line. if salmons can provide that threat while keeping up with his defensive assignment, and shooting his normal high percentage close to the basket, i wouldn’t be suprised to see him meet or exceed his sacramento averages while deng is out.
