Rose was awful.

The worst game of his career. He’s just dreadful right now – turnovers, piss-poor defense, spotty shooting, passive taking the ball to the hoop.

horrible game

there is simply no order on the court. Guys aren’t helping each other on defense and all we do is pass the ball on the perimeter and go 1 on 1. I thought we were going to be a high pick and roll team? I don’t think Vinny calls enough plays for Derrick in the pick and roll, probably because he hasn’t taught him how to run it correctly. The only solace I will take from this is knowing this is probably the final nail in VDN’s coffin. The Bulls won’t fire him before the offseason, but come June, this “coach” is gone.

dengs problems are directly related to the coach and the offensive scheme

and its tough to win when you dont run an offense, have no set rotation and play tim thomas/luol deng at pf for 1/2 the game

What do you mean, "What does that have to do with anything"?

It has everything to do with it. How about showing some pride? Putting up a fight when you know this would be a great win for the organization with all of this stuff going on. How can you say it doesn’t matter?

"That's a spicy meatball-a!" - Vinny Del Negro

by Juiceboxjerry on Feb 27, 2009 8:38 PM CST up reply actions

They played basketball and lost,

delving into this in more layers is a little silly. I doubt this would be a “great win” for the organization. Most won’t remember if this game was won or lost two years from now.

On the flip side, don’t you think that’s what they were thinking as well? Your observation of putting up “pride” is completely subjective. They might have been playing as hard as they could “inside,” but couldn’t pull it off because they sucked ass on the court.

by NittanyCub on Feb 27, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

They played horrible defense

and since defense is essentially effort, I would say they weren’t playing hard. Also, I’m not saying this could have been the Miracle on ice or anything, just that it would have been nice to see the team show up for this game a day after everything happened. It would have been a nice tribute. I don’t understand how you can argue with that?

"That's a spicy meatball-a!" - Vinny Del Negro

by Juiceboxjerry on Feb 27, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

I see your point, and it's valid,

but what I took out of your original post is that this game will be held more valuable than the other 82 games this season. It won’t, it’s another game. And thinking that they have to win this game, more than any other game, because Kerr and Van Lier died seemed a little weird, at least to me.

I won’t argue that it wouldn’t have been a nice tribute, though, because it would have.

by NittanyCub on Feb 27, 2009 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

It does matter because outside of winning a championship....Players don't get

to see the President. It was an honor for them to be invited to the White House to meet the President personally. That doesn’t happen everyday. That is rare. That lends prestige to the organization and it gives the President bragging rights.

Obama could have stayed in the WH and watched the game on TV, but publicly came to support the BULLS!!!!! That is a big deal. If that cannot inspire you then you might as well not play another game. It has gotten to the point that they don’t care who is watching then that is an indictment on the players….yes, but if VINNY cannot motivate them to play then he needs to go.

by Bart71 on Feb 27, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Has nothing to do with coaching

VDN’s coaching deficiencies have nothing to do with Deng’s performance. Deng is an average player. He is mentally weak and has no heart. You will see as many bad games as good games from him. I never liked Deng and cannot fathom why he was paid so handsomely in the offseason. People like to say that the Noce and Hinrich contracts were awful, but Deng’s takes the cake. He should be shipped out this summer. Forget using Salmons as a BG replacement and start thinking about using him as a replacement for Deng.

flagged for backing! ;-)

;-)

but seriously, deng supporters are going to have a tough time defending his play. I know there are some that think making baskets in the first quarter is just as good as making them late in the 4th quarter. And there wont be an NBA GM on the planet that agrees with you save maybe Jerry REinsdorfPaxGar or whatever we are calling that 3 headed monster. And lately or in fact for a few seasons now…deng is doing much scoring especially efficiently for any particular corner. He is becoming a garbage man…cedric ceballos part deux. Antawn jamison without the 3 point shooting and without the rebounding and well…without 20-30% of the ability to score either.

22 or 32-No excuse! New coach? no excuse! he’s been in the league for 4 years…and on the same team and playing with almost the exact same players save the last 3 games.

Now lets bring up his contract?!?!

I’m all for a pure salary dump. (and if we get back a pick or decent project-great) I’d salary dump deng way before I salary dump Kirk or let Gordon walk for free and frankly-I’m not a huge fan of either…but they bring something. Kirk still makes key stops and can run an offense. Gordon is one of the best scorers in the NBA and also one of the most efficient. These 2 have way more value than deng.

Thabo just put up 12 and 8 on 5-9 shooting. 2-3 from beyond the arc in an over time loss to the mav and without Durant. He was due to earn 2.9 million next year and when the time came to resign him he might have been able to get him for 4-5 million per season. Within a year or 2 thabo will be a 12 ppg and 7 rpg and 4 spg type player. We somehow moved Noc for salmons and Miller. Tyrus is becoming a better shooter and better finisher. salmons is a 40% 3 point shooter. Gordon can shoot. Tim thomas can shoot. brad Miller can shoot. So thabo’s inability to shoot on some night could have been easily masked on this team. The smart trade at the deadline would have been to salary dump deng and keep Thabo…Start salmons who clearly has been a better player as a starter even thought he is doing great off the bench here. And when you bring in thabo, bring him in with Brad miller, Tim Thomas and Kirk at PG while keeping either salmons or Gordon out there.

By dumping deng we would have been able to be Gordon’s highest bidder…or be able to take back salary in a sign and trade

by SD20 on Feb 28, 2009 12:23 PM CST up reply actions

I am not a defender of Deng...I think he is an overpaid role player....

I don’t expect Deng to be more than what he is. He is not a star in this league, but he can play role on a good team WITH a star. The contract is outragious and Deng should have been let go this past summer and let another fool pay him more than he is worth.

However, Dengs game depends on opportunities being MADE for him and this is a colossal failure of Vinny. Derrick Rose shoud be averaging close to 10 assists a game with all of the shooters we have on this team.

That is on the Coach to deliver. If the players are still wondering what their roles on the team are then that is a coaching failure.

The team is not centered around Rose and some of the players have not bought into the idea of deferring to him, so that leaves us in chaos.

I have hope for the Houston game because we do play better at home, but in the back of my mind, I see a very painful game to watch again tonight.

The overall team still needs an overhaul. The old “core” has failed so it is time to build a new core.

I disagree. This team has no direction, nobody knows their role, because their roles have never

been defined. How can their be any consistency when the numbskull calling the shots has no idea what his plan is? Does anyone remember how solid they looked during that brief interim when Vinny’s options were taken away with the diminished roster? A performance like this is on the Coach. That is why he has the title of COACH.

Players ain’t shit without good coaching. Talent on the level of the NBA can take you only so far. Look at all of the Champions and I guarantee you will see a good ass Coach on it.

The Lakers had Kobe and Shaq on their team when and Del Harris could not take them to a championship. It was not until PHIL JACKSON came along that the Lakers begun to win again and now even WITHOUT Shaq the Lakers are poised to possibly will a championship because of Kobe…yes, but without PHIL JACKSON, kobe would be good, but he would not be a god. PHIL JACKSON makes basketball gods.

by juicewolta on Feb 27, 2009 8:39 PM CST reply actions

Deng has to feed off of a creator. Deng cuts.... Deng spots up..... You don't throw the ball to

Deng and ask him to do something with it because he can’t. That is not his strength. That’s why you have Derrick Rose. Derrick Rose is supposed to create opportunities for Deng, but Rose cannot create if after one pass the ball is chucked by someone who thinks he is better than the point guard. Rose will bring the ball up and pass it and that is it.

That is the new offense now. Rose bring up the ball and pass it and hope you will get the ball back, even on the fastbreak, which is supposed to be his strength, Tyrus Thomas is leading the damn break or Ben Gordon.

What is Rose supposed to do and I SEE Rose asking for the ball. Rose defers to them because he is new and don’t want to step on toes and I really thinks that he respects them, but after a season of the BS I think Rose will come out of his shell, because he is a winner. He has always been a winner and he did not make it this far for some overpaid role players and a douche for a coach to stop his growth.

Once he gets home for a while and have time to think and hear it from family and friends on the south side I guarantee he will return toughened up for season two.

by Bart71 on Feb 27, 2009 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

i hate how the bulls pass the ball to kirk or bg

or whoever on the break when Rose is asking for the ball. It is just a failure of coaching, of player communication, of everything. It is really symptomatic of a lot of problems with this team. People actually commented when TiT or Miller wouldn’t pass the ball to Hinrich/Gordon and instead insisted on giving the ball to Rose. That is what you are suppose to do! Its so frustrating.

At one point in the 3rd, Rose came up for a pick and roll, the Wiz trapped, he quickly through it over to Hinrich and asked for the ball back, and of course never got it. I starting to go agree with BastID that there are simply too many guys on this team who won’t defer to Rose.

by Basketball Smurf on Feb 27, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

It's a failure of leadership at pretty much every level

Rose needs to be more vocal.
The rest of the players need to be put in their place.
The coaches need to do some putting.
And the GM.
And not a fucking one of them does it.

by Sports2 on Feb 27, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

Deng is mentally "weak"....

Deng doesn’t play well under pressure most of the time, and he doesn’t play well when there’s turbulence around the team. And he doesn’t play well when he’s got competition for his minutes. And then he’s also been hurt for a lot of games in his career.

However, when he plays well, he plays well, and Pax thinks if Bulls played with more ball and player movement Deng is worth the money. Unfortunately, such movement is a rarity the last two seasons…

by Cholla on Feb 27, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Bulls are mentally weak as a team...not that it's news

It’s not just Deng I hasten to add. There’s mental toughness and physical toughness, and Bulls have suffered lack of both. Noc got the desperate contract bid by Pax because he was trying to add/keep at least some toughness.

I guess we are all hoping that Rose can grow into the kind of leadership and toughness both mentally and physically that will lead our otherwise mild mannered crew. (Miller used to be fairly nasty and I don’t know about Salmons).

by Cholla on Feb 27, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Bulls signed Wallace to help with "toughness" problem...

Come to think of it…I’d forgotten how much of a problem this has been for so long…that they threw money at not only Noc but Wallace to solve the toughness gap. Still isn’t solved…not to say I want VDN around any longer than yesterday, but perhaps we have to worry about more than coaching when it comes to team mentality…maybe it’s still about need for “leadership” on the roster, and if Rose doesn’t have enough, then team will have to find some players that do to bring in.

I already told you its partly the coach’s fault but mostly the players.. They lost by a lot to a crap team! This is mostly the players fault, you cant draw up a play that forces players to not defend. Stop making excuses for this team. Deng is horrible, he always gets injured and then people defend him by saying hes not playing at 100 percent. Like someone said, getting garnett changed boston even though everyone said doc was a crappy coach. So what can you say now that they are winning? Are they winning because of the coach?

Seriously, stop making excuses for this team. The only hope is Rose and hopefully tryus becomes better.

this season is meant to see who belong and who doesnt, now that we have someone to build around.

by aznlildelfin on Feb 27, 2009 8:48 PM CST reply actions

that wasnt my point (i made the comment about garnett)

When Garnett went to boston they gave up a lot of players to get him…thus, they didnt have all the bench players that they had and thus it was easy set a rotation…also, thibodeau coached the defense…finally, Garnett was the de facto coach of that team. Garnett saved rivers from himself…that and having possibly the best assistant coach in the nba

by rosefromconcrete on Feb 27, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

THIS IS NOT DERRICK ROSE'S TEAM!!!!

For the 948197th time…..bullshit rotations….and arrogant stubborn guys like Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich will never allow this team to be Derrick Rose’s team. WHY DO YOU THINK everyone looks LOST out there….no one knows whose team this is!!! No one to create, no clutch to fall back on!! This is why we lose!

pax sucks because he didnt get garnett, pau, or even kobe because those teams were never going to make the trade in the first place. or stuff like that.

Is anyone else worried about V D Numbskull reducing Rose and Tyrus's minutes, especially Thomas

who was just getting his groove on until the other Thomas showed up? It may be subconscious, but I think Rose’s burning desire to win is diminishing. The flame is being blown out by our head blowhard who looks good, talks well, but is in reality, an amiable dunce.
Deng had a reputation as a hustle player who consistently gave good effort. I think he realizes Vinny’s so called offensive sets do not play to his strengths and his effort and drive have suffered as a result. Gordon and Kirk are having difficulty not being the main cogs. Maybe instead of a new coach, the Bullies would be better off hiring Dr. Phil to give them a motivatonal pep talk.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive. The players and the coaching both sucked tonight, but it’s a lot easier to change one than the other.

It's the coach

I can’t remember the last time I saw a team that went so long without a transcendent point guard acquire one – with the first pick in the draft, no less – have him start the first few months of the season with the ball mostly in his hands, then inexplicably relegate him to being a spectator in the half court. The Hornets didn’t do this with Chris Paul, the Jazz didn’t do this with D-Will. Hell, Bernie Bickerstaff even gave the ball to Felton for the most part. Why can’t he tell Vinny to do the same here? Of course, Paul and Deron did have Byron Scott and Jerry Sloan, respectively. SMH

by TheCool1 on Feb 27, 2009 9:25 PM CST reply actions

Yes, yes, yes, yes. It's definitely the coach.

Rose has lost his edge thanks to Vinny. And he’s about to run a steamroller over Tyrus’s steady progress until the trades.

Tonight, Tyrus had just converted 2 free throws after driving aggressively to the rim for his 8th attempt in less than 16 minutes (granted he missed 3). This brought the Bulls within 2 at 57-55 with a little over 8 minutes left in the 3rd period. At this point our resident genius pulled him.

TYRUS DID NOT SEE THE FLOOR AGAIN UNTIL A LITTLE OVER 4 MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME AFTER IT WAS HOPELESSLY OUT OF REACH. Do you think his help defense may have slowed down the Wizard’s penetration? or maybe reduced their rebound advantage of 53 to 37?

The reason the Bulls suck so much is because Count DelNegro is sucking out the life from them with his inexplicable rotations.

Don't get me wrong, the players are at fault too

But not as much as Vinny. Let’s just say you can tell he’s never been a coach, ever. There are a bunch of bad teams in the league, but the majority of them lose because a lack of talent. The Bulls are a bad mix of players mixed with a coach with an inability to make a smart decision, minus playing Derrick a lot of minutes (which he’s botched since Kirk returned)

Fuck VDN

You play Rose, BG, Salmons, TT and Noah.

Sit Deng’s pathetic ass until he decides he’s ready to play basketball. DO NOT have nine guys playing 20 minutes; that’s a recipe for disaster and NO ONE WILL EVER get into the groove with that shit. Brad Miller is an expiring contract and nothing more; give him 15 minutes a game. Hinrich is worthless now that we have Salmons to defend the bigger two guards. He backs up Rose/BG for 15 minutes a night, MAX. Play Ty Thomas 35 minutes plus because he is TRYING to breakout, but fucking idiot Del Negro is doing his best to keep him from doing so.

I’m so sick of this bullshit. We do not deserve an effort like that; THE WIZARDS, MAN! THE WIZARDS! Quick, somebody name the Wiz’s starting five! GOD! When you have so much talent on your team, you should beat the shit out of the hapless WIZ. But not us. Not with Vinny. Play your best players you fucking numbnut. Tim Thomas is not what he was supposed to be 10 years ago. Brad Miller is old and slow. Hinrich SUCKS. Rose is the future. Ty Thomas is the future. Jo Noah is the future. Play them. No matter what. Play Salmons. Fuck everyone else on this team. Except for Big Sexy Aaron Gray. He’s just so bad it’s hilarious.

I think Noah should split the time with Salmons, otherwise I agree with your analysis.

It isn’t that complicated. Play your future core. Cut down the rotations. In other words, Vinny

Vinny would have pulled Jordan to give Craig Hodges more floor time in order to provide better spacing.

Hodges was lights out from 3 point range, Vinny would argue thus speading the court.

HUGHES' HUGE

PAID $6 million, sat on bench, never given the 30 minutes he asked for to get his game.
Smart coach plays him, first games in over a month, knicks lost, so no big one, but lets look at the stats boys and girls

34min, 25 pts, 3/6 3pt line 4/4 charity stripe 8 rebounds 4 steals, 2 assist, maybe Walt Frazier is right, we got this guy for free, give him two or three weeks for he sat the whole first half of the season and he will come around.
Just think maybe what we could have got in a trade if showcased three weeks and not having the puppet bulls press put out “send him home”. Basketball I.Q. I would guess around 64. $6 million done the drain, the Rose is wilted from extreme high mileage of driving down the center lane and starting every single game a year removed from High School. Guess Lindsey will come in and help get that last spot. Lets see what the Knicks do with a similar season versus the Bulls now to playoffs, then question how the highest paid player and investment within the franchise was handled.
Money going to get tight, blowing $6 million and getting nothing, NOT TO BRIGHT!!

This is the fucking NBA, where the best coaches and players are supposed to reside, yet we have a coach’s who’s head is fifty feet up his ass and a bunch of severely limited, yet entirely selfish players on this team. This shit just doesn’t make sense. A large chunk of this roster made up one of the league’s elite defenses just three or four year’s ago, and now they play like a bunch of scrubs and get mauled by the league’s shittiest unit. Some quick hits from section 121 last night

-Vinny’s hair is not as impressive in real life
-It sucks to watch a game sitting in front of a dozen 10 year old girls who are more interested in getting Barry to smile at them than watching what’s going on in the game
-Tim Thomas is a black hole
-John Salmons is almost there too
-VDN must have unearthed Skiles’ dog house and saw Tyrus’s name at the top of the register – I was shocked to look at the box score and see Tyrus played 20 minutes
-If Rose got calls like Mike James does, he would average 20 points a night
-There’s no point to keeping Rose in with the second team (Hinrich/Salmons/Thomas/Miller) because none of them can run
-When popcornmachine.net posts the gameflows, I’m pretty sure you’ll see a 13 minutes stretch by Miller and two long ones like that by Salmons
-Near the end of the 2nd quarter, I yelled at Vinny to put Tyrus in. 30 seconds later he did

by torch on Feb 28, 2009 10:34 AM CST reply actions

If Tyrus is once again in the doghouse

and you have observed that Tim Thomas is a black hole
than maybe he’s replacing Tyrus’s minutes, because of another black hole….which is a description of Vinny’s brain. Whatever coaching smarts that gets sucked in there immediately sinks into darkness, never to be resurrected

Your Larry Update, boys need to learn to listen, this is FUN

Going to wish we kept him, maybe played him just 2-3 games like he asked? “Coach, I need 30 plus minutes twice a week to get my shot”
Now tell me how bad he is after shaking off the Chicago rust:
You all ripped me every post, including the site moderator (free speech?), maybe in error?

Starter with NY Saturday vs. Miami and D-Wade (coming our town in 2010, ya RIGHT). Now Hughes gets 38 min, 7/15 FG, 4/7 3 pters (can Rose hit one?), 5 assist, 19 pts.
Sometimes you know a player, sometimes your jealous, hate that they earn a big contract and say send him home, “he’s a looser”, “cancer”. Look who your all hating on now.
Let’s stay tuned to another few months and see what we blew $6.2 Million on before Feb 19th, DNP and inactive? Do you maybe just think for a few minutes, that if allowed to put these numbers up, which he will continue, that maybe we could have got a player instead of what New York gave us? Have the stones to be honest, or give the grade school comments, which don’t phase me, I laugh my ass off.
