CBA Question About Possible Offseason Trades for Bosh / Wade / Etc.
The Bulls' recent trades arguably set the team up to make power moves in the 2010 FA market. You would think that if someone like Chris Bosh tells his GM that he's not re-signing that the Raps would look to trade him ASAP. Question: Let's say a miracle happens and the Bulls trade for Bosh this summer. Can the Bulls lock him up to a longer deal or do they have to wait until after the season, risking that he could go elsewhere? I'm hazy on this part of the CBA and am hoping someone knows the answer.

Bulls can sign him to an extension
After the deal is completed as far as I know
But I think they would have until opening day? I might be wrong but I think that’s how it goes
It'd have to be before opening day
NBA CBA forbids contract negotiations between a team and player currently under contract during the course of the season.

don't make me look it up
I think it’s because Rip was under contract with the Pistons for over 3 years. (Jeff Foster also signed an extension this season)

Well, I guess that works for me.
(I hadn’t even thought it was possible)
Except for extensions of rookie scale contracts (which must be signed by October 31), extensions may be signed up to June 30, the day before the player would have become a free agent.
So it doesn’t look like the player has to be with the same team, but that the contract has to be originally four years in length and can’t be extended until after the third year (which is probably what was sticking in your head). Bosh’s contract is only four years if the option is picked up (which would obviously be great but won’t happen because he would get a big raise if he opted out) and they wouldn’t be able to extend him until after the 2010 season anyway.
Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!
By the way, this means, best to my knowledge...
…that they CAN’T re-sign him to an extension at all.

technically, no.

i would think
that any team that trades for him would want to believe they had a chance to sign him afterwards. Otherwise, what’s the point? If Bosh said there was zero chance he would sign with a particular team do you think they would still go after him?
