Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

[From the FanShots. Pretty fantastic, considering. Thabo was scheduled to make ~$2.75m next season. Not a bad situation for him to be in, either -ed.]

Chicago is dealing Thabo Sefolosha to Oklahoma City for a 2009 first-round pick, a league source said. The Thunder own the first-round picks of the Suns and Nuggets, and will send the least valuable pick to Chicago in exchange for Sefalosha.

Maybe we can package

This pick, our pick and Hinrich for something.

larry has that system down to a science. Especially with the way the economy is….big wigs like larry coming in dressed in their mink coats and 24k gold cigarrete holders with pockets lined with coke make for a large draw during shift changes.

can't hurt

considering the Bulls roster and tax space, selling or packaging the picks could certainly be on the table. Though late firsts are pretty decent value if the pick doesn’t bust.

I’m willing to wait for Bosh in free agency in 2010.

I'd say Pax's record with later picks is pretty good

Duhon was a great player for a second round pick, Aaron Gray – despite his misuse by coaches – is a damn fine player for second rounder. I’d imagine the Pax can find value in the late first round.

I think he'd be a lot happier if Kirk Hinrich was paid a little bit more than Steve Blake.

Hinrich at 5 million would be so much more palatable than Hinrich at 10 million. For the amount of minutes he SHOULD be playing though, 5 million is still too much. He should only get 12 minutes a game now at most and you just don’t pay a guy that kind of money for those minutes.

by fundamentallysound on Feb 19, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

No control over what Kirk's paid - done deal can't be undone

Even though the logical move for the team has been Kirk since at least the draft, maybe the draft lottery, the org has continually found a way to keep him and get him minutes.

On the other hand, Vinny has stuck with not starting him over Derrick or Ben, and has pretty consistently played the hot hand down the stretch – which, if you have any faith in Derrick and Ben, should be the two of them on most nights.

I’d prefer a trade for Kirk myself – I’m not in Chicago, I have LP, I’d rather watch him start and play big minutes elsewhere.

Meanwhile, life’s a lot more pleasant if you just assume Kirk remains a Bull and don’t get worked up over the fact he is – and when the trade finally does come you can be ecstatically thrilled with it, instead of being frustrated when it doesn’t.

I don't think they would start Hinrich now.

He’s a 6th man for as long as he’s in Chicago. And I don’t have a lot problems with Kirk in that role.

by Scotter on Feb 19, 2009 5:04 PM CST up reply actions

With his price tag

I’d have a problem next year

There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

by Ozzie Montana on Feb 19, 2009 5:25 PM EST

by Jbasic89 on Feb 19, 2009 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

But again, that's done

We might waste time arguing about how the org allocates the money, but ultimately have absolutely no control over it.

I’d just much prefer to save my frustrations for whether the guys currently on the team are being used in the role best for the org currently and in the future. Right now I’m pretty happy with that as a Bulls fan.

Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!

by wjb1492 on Feb 19, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

No, you're right

But there’s at least an immediate relevance to each game, such as “Why the hell is Derrick on the bench while Thabo throws away the inbounds pass?!?”

Trade deadline is done, Kirk stayed. I know it’s unrealistic, but I just can’t help wishing that people could get off the “Kirk sucks” bandwagon and onto the “Kirk is the 3rd best guard on the team, and is being used in a backup role and contributing to the team winning” bandwagon.

And you know, if Salmons comes in and blows up and deserves a ton of minutes, and that ends up cutting into Kirk’s, I’ll still be OK with it. I find it frustrating that people have so little regard for guys who have been on the team before he even gets here, though – one outlet was suggesting that Salmons would instantly start at SF even. If he comes in an earns that role, or starting SG, or first off the bench, fine. Great even, because it will mean an upgrade on the court. I don’t get handing someone of Salmons’ caliber and history of play that role, nor do I understand why people want to squeeze out minutes because he’s been more effective with more – as far as I’m concerned, that’s generally the sign of a selfish player who is more interested in their stats than the team welfare.

I agree

Why is it bad to have three guards that can play? Kirk can back up at both spots, and be a more than adequate short-term replacement if Rose or BG are unavailable. So what if he is overpaid. We weren’t getting anything of value for him this season, anyway, after he hurt his hand. I thought our guards won the game last night. With Noc & Thabo gone, Salmons will get plenty of traction at the three, so Kirk will get 20-25 mins a night, Where is this 12 minute limit coming from?

by Cannoli on Feb 19, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Salmons needs minutes to be effective. Some of them will come from the 2. If Salmons is getting minutes

at the 2, and BG is playing the lion’s share (as he should) at the 2, then that leaves only PG minutes for Kirk and Rose needs to be playing 33-36 minutes a night.

He's played a greater portion of minutes at SF for Sacramento this season,

with a slightly better PER and a definitely better PER differential, and we have no one else to back up Lu now.

And you started with the premise that Salmons needs minutes to be effective, which I generally find to be a load of crap. Where he is the best option for the team to perform well, great – he should definitely get those minutes. I assume that will work itself out once he gets here and gets into the system, such as it is. I don’t think Vinny needs to hand him 30 minutes based on the premise that he just can’t be effective in 20.

Hughes stunk and was inefficient, Salmons is pretty good and is efficient.

That’s the difference. Also, Larry sucked regardless of how many minutes he played. With Salmons there’s actual evidence (by his statistical splits) that he plays a lot worse coming off the bench than when he starts.

It would have been nice to trade Kirk to Minny, but it’s also a good thing to have a player in case of an injury who knows the team. Imagine having Cardinal, Collins, Jerome James, Tim thomas and Gray all riding the pine and then no help if someone is hurt. That would suck. I’m real happy about it tho.

A bench that can actually contribute to the score board.

when they are out there. Tyrus cutting to the bucket to get Miller passes should be really nice and Noah can hit the boards on any jumpers Miller might miss off the pick and pop with Rose.

I agree

Noah’s a decent passer but he can’t do it bc he is never doubled. Miller forces guys to play his jumper which will open stuff up for TT and Deng cutting to the hoop.

A combo of Noah/Tyrus/Miller/Gray should leave the frontcourt set, right?

Maybe a little Tim Thomas, maybe some Luol Deng if Vinny can’t help himself.

Funny,

but I actually like the bottom of this draft better than the top in terms of value. Guys like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, and (brace yourself!) Tyler Hansborough have value as the kind of high energy muscle guys the Bulls could use for a couple mintues a night. Kind of like Nocioni used to be, before he got old, trigger happy, and defense-averse.

by smash! on Feb 19, 2009 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

Oh Lord-

now that would be a disaster – he’s a very good pickup for a late draft pick, but the lottery is a little nuts. I think we all know pax’s tendencies, though, so if he’s there when the Bulls come along…let’s say it will be hard for John to pass on him. And I don’t think that’s a bad think. Folks need to recall that TH has been seeing double teams since he was a sophomore. He’s been the focus of defenses, but because of the theatrics, but because his a strong, nasty post player with excellent touch. We coudl do worse.

But he seems to be in the Devin Harris/Parker/Rose type mold of an uber-quick, scoring-first PG. I don’t think he’s even close to the level of any of these guys, but I can definitely see him being a decent starter and above average scorer from the PG position. I like his game.

Patrick Patterson's are decent

DaJuan Blair’s is still a little raw but can use either hand. And I think Harangody is as polished as they come inside – I think he’ll be a player at the next level.

by YaoPau on Feb 19, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

Harangody is like the poor person's Hansbrough

I watched him get absolutely dominated by Thabeet. He struggles whenever you put an athlete on him and force him out of his comfort zones, and he’s not super athletic. I don’t think he translates well. DeJuan Blair is an absolute monster, but I don’t know that he’s still around that late in the draft, but if he is I’d love to have him. Same goes for Patrick Patterson, but to a slightly lesser degree because Blair is a bit better.

Blair and Patterson would both be nice additions to this team

Patterson is smoother, but Blair is a bigger body and is even more tenacious. I just worry about his weight getting to him, though. Both are basically in the Millsap mode, and I’d expect at least 1 of the 2 to become a major contributor within 2-3 years of going pro for whatever team they land on.

Dominated by Thabeet?

Harangody put up 24 points and 15 boards against UConn… Thabeet had 9 and 11.

Hansbrough sucks – he doesn’t have a post game, just that crazy jerk-straight-up-and-throw-it-off-the-backboard move which isn’t actually a move.

I expected more from you. Go back and look at

how many shots (23) it took Harangody to get to 24 points against Thabeet. His rebounding numbers were also inflated from that game because of the tip, miss, tip, miss thing that Noah always does. He looked all kinds of ugly in that game, and I just don’t think he’s athletic enough to play in the NBA, he’s got Aaron Gray level doughiness.

Learn to expect very little from me :)

But you’re wrong about this. First you say “24 points on 23 shots!”, then you say “so many rebounds because he kept tipping and missing!” See the flaw in that logic? If Harangody goes 1/4 on the possession with three tips, that doesn’t mean he’s inefficient, that means he scored, and that also means he’s a good rebounder to tip tip tip over a 7’3" guy. So he’s both. Only I can have it both ways.

If Harangody looks “all kinds of ugly” against the top defender in college basketball and still puts up 24 and 15, I can live with that. (Who else besides Blair has had a game like that vs Thabeet?) Besides, since when is 24 points on 23 shots getting dominated?

by YaoPau on Feb 20, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

i have to disagree slightly

Harangody is a little more athletic than Gray…better foot-work, a little quicker…that’s the only thing I’ll disagree with you on. You’re spot on with his inflated numbers.

Holy shit Paxson has been on fire

Thabo was……..I dunno, alright. They’ll be able to draft an uber-cheap replacement for him, or package the pick with Hinrich for a trade on draft day. The Bulls front office have really done a good job over the past few days of at least giving themselves options for the future.

This is also a vote of confidence for John Salmons, maybe he won’t bitch as much as he’s the clear-cut backup SF.

Minutes breakdown for the rest of the year?

I’ll guess…

PG: Rose 35, Hinrich 13
SG: Gordon 30, Salmons 18
SF: Deng 35, Salmons 10, Thomas 3
PF: Tyrus 30, Joakim 15, Thomas 3
C: Miller 30, Joakim 10, Gray 8

I swear I’m missing somebody.

by YaoPau on Feb 19, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

That's the problem with not dealing Hinrich. The guard glut persists and he's paid too much

to not play him. Especially if the Bulls think they can “raise his value” for this summer. Damn it all.

exactly.

I honestly do not get how they think his value will increase. Maybe by mythology. But I do think it’s important that he is only the backup PG. Honestly Rose could use a bit more rest as well. If someone gets hurt it’ll be nice to have Hinrich around.

I'm with you on that

and I think “will increase” just means “we’re pretty sure he’s worth more than Brian Cardinal”, which I might be the best offer we got for him. But yeah, it doesn’t hurt to have him on the team this year, especially if we go up against a scoring PG in the playoffs.

I would have loved to have seen him dealt to POR for Blake, Sergio, and Frye

and I honestly have no idea why the Blazers wouldn’t do that. Blake makes more sense because he expires in 2010, Frye and Sergio expire this year, and Blake wouldn’t command the minutes or money of Hinrich. Plus, it’d keep the Kirk fanbase around here happy cause POR would be a perfect situation for Kirk to go to. That’s a winner all the way around.

Guards do a straight-up Derrick/Ben/Kirk rotation
SF – Lu and Salmons, with occasional time at PF when Vinny can’t resist small ball
Inside – leave Gray totally out of it. Miller and Joakim split C time, Tyrus gets most PF minutes.

Hm... I have read and seen only great things from Henderson (except for when he destroyed

Hansbrough’s nose, I’m a UNC fan and that was bush league). If we can get him with the better of our two picks, I might not be as upset about losing BG as I otherwise would be. Though, I will still be pretty pissed that Pax’s Hinrich love cost us BG.

Yeah, I didn't like him at the beginning of the year...

…because he had shot so poorly the previous two years. If he stays around 38% 3pt shooting for the rest of year, he’d be the way to go.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

by tyger1147 on Feb 19, 2009 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

I'm still a little leery of players who stink at shooting for two full years

and then all of a sudden start dropping 38% 3pt shooting. However, on the positive side, his FT% has gone up every year, as has his TS%, so maybe he’s just refined his shot over time. I guess I could live with a Salmons, Henderson, Hinrich platoon at SG next year if I had to, but I would prefer BG to stick around. I also like that he rebounds the ball decently for a SG.

Henderson

played with a wrist injury last season.

by Scotter on Feb 19, 2009 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

He had a wrist injury all last year...

…that he finally had operated on at the end of the year. Apparently, he was shooting different all last year. Taking that into consideration, a progression of 32, 35, 38% isn’t that improbable.

Will it stick? Who knows? It will be a lot of film study o see if he’s really nailed his new form and is consistent with it.

Agreed I just wonder what Salmons role is gonna be on the team now

I don’t think he’ll be happy basically replacing Thabo, playing spot minutes backing up Lu and BG. So that’s really my only concern. Albeit a minor one

My best guess

is that Salmons would get rather significant minutes behind Lu and BG
Kirk gets his minutes cut down to mostly just backup PG duties
Salmons takes the majority of the backup SG and SF minutes.

1. I don't know about the luxury tax. 2. The pick from OKC is going to be an asset and given

that Thabo wasn’t being used at all, it’s a welcome asset and we don’t have to pay him next year (just the $1 mil for the draft pick’s guaranteed salary). 3. No, Larry Hughes would have whined about PT pretty soon, and atleast Tim Thomas can shoot and play in the front court if someone is hurt.

Depends on who you ask

I think it’s damn good on SG’s and pretty good on SF’s. He doesn’t defend many PG’s, but he could defend a few of them too. He’s a really multi positional backcourt player who can play the SF some under the right circumstance.

He’s at the same level of defense that Kirk Hinrich was several years ago.

We need a wing stopper, and preferably one who is bigger than Kirk Hinrich (who shouldn’t be on the team at this point).

Do you want the downside?

He’s a below average rebounder. And he pouts when coming off the bench (which he most likely will). He also has issue’s with how many shots he takes. And with Chicago being the media market it is, he has terrible media skills. You guys are gonna have fun deciphering him.

He’s also very private, and as such, won’t even let his family be interviewed. So keep in mind, this is a guy who is his own man. He isn’t Larry Hughes, but he isn’t Buddha either.

I've been trying to not think about this too much and ruin my day

but the mindset of the organization leads me to believe we won’t have to worry about this

And he pouts when coming off the bench (which he most likely will).

VDN was looking for every excuse before the season to start someone over BG at SG. Thankfully, injuries to Hinrich and Hughes and ineffectiveness by Thabo led him to finally putting BG in the starting spot and leaving him there. The temptation of an 18ppg scorer with a good defensive reputation will likely be too much to overcome. Ben Gordon will quietly return to the bench before this season is over.

The Hughes deal put them slightly over right?

If they make a good choice with the pick it matters. No. It’s a lot easier to send 7 million home next season than it is 13 million.

I honestly haven't watched much of either since last tournament

According to Roy Williams, Lawson is the fastest guard he’s ever coached (and he has had a few, to say the least) which might fit well with an offense designed to cater to Derrick’s abilities. And I agree with LOTP about Collison being the better defender.

So I guess it all depends on whether you want your backup to excel in the same system or provide a change of pace?

I’m not really unhappy with the trades, and I enjoyed the game last night. But what’s the plan? I know they want pieces to go with Rose. Are we going to become players in free agency in 2010? Is there anyone on the team now who’ll be there long term? We’re not going to get a superstar with the 25th pick or our own lower pick. I’m confused.

the bulls have a bigger logjam at guard now than they did when the season started. that being said, i like the players they have jammed back there better than the ones they started the season with. Obv, John Salmons has trade value as does Hinrich after this season to go along with the two first round draft picks they now have. Hughes expiring contract would have been moveable in the offseason too but having sent him home in December or January and having him sit out until the end of the season hurt his trade value for the future.

and Rose should be getting no less than 33-34 minutes a night there. So that leaves only 14-15 for Hinrich at the most, and preferably less, because more Rose is a good thing, generally speaking.

I gotta say, guys, this TIm Thomas thing has me worried.

I loved the idea of a three big rotation of Miller, T2, and Noah, and I don’t want that disturbed. Tim might have value, in terms of a situational big who can hit a three. But that’s exactly how Nocioni should have been used…and we all saw how that turned out.

Am I being paranoid? I guess I don’t yet trust VDN to stand up to a vet. Or pick his “matchups” wisely.

Sad to see Thabo go...

despite all the hate for him around here I actually thought he had lots of potential. He wouldn’t have received any playing time in our guard cluster so maybe he can play well and develop in OKC. Now i’m going to try and find a Thabo t-shirt on clearance.

more info on the Thabo deal

-It seems the Bulls also sent cash to the Thunder in exchange for the pick.

-OKC owns 3 first round picks in the ’09 draft. One is their own, one is from the Nuggets (Johan Petro trade), and one is from the Spurs (Kurt Thomas deal). The Bulls will get the least favorable of the Denver & SA picks.

-The Thunder waived BAB All Star Mouhamed Sene in order to make room for Thabo.

Malik Rose

was supposed to be traded to chicago instead of Tim Thomas. But since the chandler-wilcox trade, went down, the knicks was able to pry wilcox in exchange for Malik.

Malik would’ve been a better fit for chicago. Another vet that will act as mentor. Might play some quality minutes but will not steal minutes from Tyrus Noah too much

Hollinger on trade

Link

Emphasized is a a reading comprehension error due to him having been working for 48 straight hours right? One team could miss the playoffs, but not both(never in his simulations), so this seems to imply getting the preferred pick.

Chicago: I don’t like the idea of Chicago dumping Sefolosha, but in the big picture it made a lot of sense. Chicago’s deals left it with a five-man smalls rotation of Derrick Rose, Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, John Salmons and Luol Deng; Sefolosha was totally superfluous in that arrangement.

So the Bulls converted him into a first-round pick that they can be used to supplement the frontcourt. Chicago would have preferred to have offloaded Hinrich for expiring deals but couldn’t get that to work. Grade: B

Oklahoma City: I love this deal for the Thunder. They’ve needed a shooting guard all season, and especially one who will defend and doesn’t need the ball much. Sefolosha pretty much fits the description on all counts, and he should be a perfect fit as their starting 2 going forward. He doesn’t have great offensive gifts, but he could become an elite defensive stopper in time.

The Thunder trade one of their three first-rounders in what shapes up as a fairly lame draft, but there’s a chance that the pick (the lesser of Phoenix’s or Denver’s) ends up in the lottery.

In a related move, the Thunder waived Mouhamed Sene, one of their recent lottery picks to try to fill the center spot for the franchise. I’m guessing you don’t hear that name again unless you’re a big fan of FIBA qualifying tournaments. Grade: A-

by reprisal on Feb 19, 2009 9:56 PM CST reply actions

I think Hollinger's confusing 'lesser'

they’ll only get a lottery pick if all those teams miss the playoffs.

There yet another ref to the pick belonging to the Suns

Is it a Suns pick or a Spurs pick?

With the Nuggets playing better I guess it probably doesn’t matter in the end since one of those teams is getting out of the first round.

Im sad to see thabo go...

but if i believe the trend, he will probably be traded back in 3 years when he has reached his potential…

I know my opinion could be biased cause I know Thabo personally, but I was and am still convinced he could have added something crucial to the team..

Anyway, i wish him the best of luck in OKC and hope to see him develop into the player he can be. And im looking forward to March 18th when OKC meets CHI… !!

Yay! two teams to root for now!

Beyond this, I’m really happy with the trades. And just the concept of having Hughes/Noc/Gooden – who i percieved as major reasons for the struggle of the bulls in the first half of the season – off the roster!

That will be an exciting bulls team to watch from friday!

I don’t think this trade was smart though, as Thabo is really appreciated in this leage by many GMs and could have been packed with Kirk for a sweet deal… A 3rd option 1st round pick is not exactly amazing.. Remember this trade in 2 years, and see where Thabo is..

by simonswiss on Feb 20, 2009 3:34 AM CST reply actions

Thabo's a defensive-"minded" wing on a defensive-minded team.

Had he developed a consistent 3-pt shot (even in inconsistent minutes), he could have been very valuable to this team. He probably shouldn’t have been expected to do that, but he was billed as an offensive-ready SG. He just wasn’t quite up to the task considering the players this team has ahead of him—both in their abilities and youth.

Now, on a team that should, eventually, have some pretty good offense, he’ll be a lot better. Most teams don’t have both a SG and SF that are dynamic on offense and Thabo could guard the better one, allowing Durant to be the offensive machine he is.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

See you guys...

As you may know, I came to BaB with Thabo (or something like that). But for some reason (really I don’t know why), I became part of the great BaB community, and a Bulls fan, in the process. So I am here to stay, unfortunately for you guys. I look forward to see how the Bulls will develop with the new plan (or so it finally seems).

Of course, I will also follow Thabo in OKC, I want him to do well.

But please, Matt, don’t trade me to “name of the OKC blog if it exists, I’m not sure there’s one and it most definitely is not up to BaB’s standard” !

Yeah, same here!

I grew up in the MJ era as a bulls fans, as fan as you can be from Switzerland with no TV transmission and no internet at the time.. Living through CNN World Sport 2 min recap of the games..

I also grew up playing in Thabo’s team in Vevey. At some stage he left Switzerland for a youth Formation Center with clear hopes to end up in the NBA one day. When he made it to the bulls, I began watching live games and eventually ended up on BlogABull to share the passion of the games and get entertained during timeout commercials..

In summer 2008, Bulls landed #1 Pick and I was amazingly excited at the prospect of having my mate thabo play with one of the most exciting player ever, Mr. D-Rose.. Too bad, toooooo bad he didn’t win his starting role at the start of the season, as i truely believe he could have with more self confidence..

Now he left the Bulls to OKC, and i wish him good luck and automatically become a Thunder Fan (I am yet to discover their roster!), but ther is NO WAY i can stop being a bulls fan and watch D-Rose, TT, Salmons, Miller and Co do their thing in the playoff run, and eventually become a big NBA threat after the 2010 free agent class…

Goes without saying, I am highly looking forward to watch the OKC-CHI game on March 18th, not in a spirit of revenge, but more as an opportunity for him to show VND and co his real skills and have a good time playing against his old CHI-town mates..

My apologizes for sometimes rooting too much for thabo in certain games this year, but it’s so unreal for us here to have a mate from our tiny swiss town make it to the NBA that I maybe wished too much he could succeed better and go further.

That said, I still am very pissed at VDN for keeping him on the bench that much, even after productive “5 first half minutes”…

As a kid, Thabo was often wearing a bulls cap or jersey and telling us “i wanna play for the bulls one day!”. He never mentionned OKC, surprizingly.

Best of luck to him, and to the Bulls! See you tonight!

by simonswiss on Feb 20, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

On the Oklahoma City Thunder, they have Kevin Durant.

He may end up being the most dynamic or versatile scorer in the league in three to four years. He’s only a month older than Rose (so essentially the same age NBA-wise) and he’s already got the 16th-highest PER in the league.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!
