Trade Deadline Kirk Hinrich Thread

I'll update this post with hot Kirk Hinrich rumors. Please help by doing some legwork in the comments.

UPDATE: Wolves make a minor deal with 2 of their expirings, sending Booth and McCants to the Kings. Obviously this reduces their options in a Kirk swap.

Chad Ford: Sources close to both the Bulls and the Timberwolves told ESPN.com late Wednesday night that Kirk Hinrich trade talks had fallen apart.

Sources differ on what happened. One source insists that, with the Kings trade, Bulls GM John Paxson felt his team had made enough moves.

Chicago instead will look to move Hinrich this summer, when his trade value will be higher, the Bulls believe.

Another source says the Wolves’ unwillingness to include their first-round pick killed the deal. A third says the Wolves insisted on excluding Jason Collins from the deal and instead wanted the Bulls to take a combo of Brian Cardinal and Mark Madsen, two players with a full year left on their contracts. Finally, two of the three sources said there was still a small possibility that trade talks could be rekindled Thursday.

Sources say the Wolves are pursuing several other smaller deals with their two expiring contracts — Collins and Rashad McCants.

Kirk w/ Hughes to NY?
Guard Larry Hughes — who the Bulls have been trying to trade for a month — didn’t make the trip to Milwaukee and rumors circulating Wednesday night had them talking to the New York Knicks about a deal with the principles being Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich and Knicks power forward David Lee.

i dont buy this at all

hughes not travelling is to me a non-issue; he hasn’t played or even been active in weeks. and i dont see any way that a team desperately seeking 2010 cap room takes on hinrich

by Calogero on Feb 19, 2009 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

to add to your statement

if this was true then Hinrich wouldn’t have made the trip either.

by J Theory on Feb 19, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

Now that's a trade

I could live with….not this stupid Minnesota trade. Kirk’s too good for a pure salary dump, especially for a really crappy salary dump like what was proposed yesterday.

Kirk and something for a real player, sure, but not Kirk for complete crap just to rid us of his salary…..if that’s the offer now, we wait until after the year and make a much better trade.

Nice to see reports on ESPN that Bosh thinks Chicago is his favorite destination….

it's not about winning the trade

it’s about helping the team. If having ‘nothing’ helps more than ‘value’ (value still means some cost), then isn’t it worth doing?

What are the Bulls going to do w/ Lee, Noah, Tyrus, and Miller? Massive frontcourt glut

If they give up Hinrich to get Lee, they’ll be in a position to resign Lee but that puts them right back into a situation of watching BG go.

is there another reason?

This from realgm

The Suns and Grizzlies were still discussing an Amare Stoudemire trade on Wednesday.

Phoenix was trying to acquire Rudy Gay, Hakim Warrick, Mike Conley and a 2009 first-round pick for Stoudemire.

Memphis declined the Suns’ attempts again.

What are the odds we didn’t do the Hinrich trade because Stoudemire is still available and maybe we’re going to see if that’s still possible? Would the Bulls do Noah + Tyrus + Hinrich for Stoudemire or is that giving up too much?

For the first half of every year,

they could put out constant trade rumors with his name in them, offering to trade him for everything from a 2nd round draft pick to Malik Rose. That should motivate him.

In all seriousness, though, they were clearly motivated to trade for him before that game. Proving that he’s still got the talent and a decent ceiling can’t hurt. Probably won’t tip them into adding a 1st round pick unfortunately.

Cardinal and Collins won't work

Pushes the Bulls into Lux tax. They are $200,000 away right now. Which is also why they can’t do the Mike James/Etan Thomas trade for Hughes with the Wizards. Bulls needed Mccants b/c they would’ve shaved a million or so off this years salary with a Cardinal or Collins and Mccants trade.

by paxdorf on Feb 19, 2009 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

wouldn't it work if we gave them thabo too?

thabo seems even more useless now with salmons on board

by Calogero on Feb 19, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Nope.

According to the Trade Machine, we’d be taking on about $560K in that deal. If we are only about $200K from the tax line, we’re still over. Also, that’d be giving up two assets just for cap relief and a draft pick — we’re not that desperate.

by arjoseph on Feb 19, 2009 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

Good point.

We could throw in Gray, but we’re still way over. Personally, I think it might be worth it to pay the tax this year (and forgo the profit sharing, etc. — I mean, really, how big is that going to be this year anyway?) to get out from Kirk’s contract, provided that the Wolves acquiesced to our draft-pick demands. The pick plus the cap relief would mean not having to worry about the tax in the future.

by arjoseph on Feb 19, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

Its not profit sharing, its tax sharing

all of the tax that gets paid to the league gets split between the teams that don’t pay the tax.

Just doing some quick math, based on the payrolls in espn’s trade machine, the luxury tax payment will be about $4.8 mil per team, to 22 of the teams in the league.

Are you kidding?

We were in a 3-team, 5-player deal where we unloaded one of our worst contracts and all of our expirings, getting a post scorer and another contract that expires next year (another year where teams will be frantically trying to cut salary, maybe even moreso than this year).

Considering that lots of teams that have been discussing deals didn’t pull off anything to really improve themselves or use their big assets (as of this post, at least — it’s still a bit early I guess) — and I’m talking NYK, Portland, Dallas, and the Cavs, mostly — I’d say we did pretty well for ourselves.

this is a young team

did you really expect to contend this year? trying to contend this year wouldn’t have even been smart; we should build around rose and try to be a contender when he’s in his prime.

nice lazy espn analysis of the bulls trade too: “well we might get to 500.” not every trade should clearly be made to blow things up or to turn you into a title contender. takes more than one move to get into contention, and shedding nocioni’s contract for anything remotely usable was a helluva deal

by Calogero on Feb 19, 2009 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

Were you expecting this team to get to the fourth seed or something?

Even if we pulled off the Amare trade, we weren’t going to be contending for the championship any time soon. And even before the Miller/Salmons trade, we were looking good to make the playoffs this year (according to Hollinger’s Playoff Odds and Power Rankings). I’d say this trade makes those odds go up, and puts us in a better position for next year and moving forward. That’s really all anyone should have been expecting.

by arjoseph on Feb 19, 2009 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

After ten years of rebuilding with all sorts of high draft picks

you would expect a lot more than what we’re talking about with this group.

You need another All Star type (or two) in addition to Rose to seriously compete.

Otherwise, we’re the Clippers!

always a great contribution.

Question: If the Blazers are far enough under the salary cap this summer...

….to absorb Hinrich’s entire salary and still be under (even if by $1), and yet the Bulls are still over the cap, do they need to match salaries still?

I can’t remember if one team or both teams have to be under so that they don’t match salaries?

Basically, could something like Hinrich and 1st round pick for Rudy Fernandez even be possible if the Blazers only have $40 million committed to next season?

by kingj41 on Feb 19, 2009 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

$40 million is partly pulled out of my bum just to make sure they were under.

According to Shamsports.com, they’ll be at $44.5 w/o Webster’s money but with two nonguaranteed contracts, and that includes Steve Blake’s $4 million, which I’d think they’d surely wave if they were getting back Hinrich. They should still be under enough to take on Hinrich’s $9.5 million. I don’t know.
