[UPDATE: Chris Sheridan has Simmons included in a deal to Sacramento, as well as Ruffin being dumped on the Blazers -ed.]

[Bumped and edited from the FanShots. I likely can't give more coherent thoughts for a while, but as a quick take:

A decent deal, because I love me some Brad Miller and really think he can complement Tyrus and Noah extremely well. Obviously dealing Gooden's contract means an Amare deal is all but toast, but that looks to be as much on Phoenix's side as the Bulls.

And, as a prerequisite for all Bulls personnel moves: this screws Ben Gordon. Any mention of the Kings saving money next season means that's what the Bulls are taking on. Hopefully they're not done. -ed.]

Big props to Gar Paxdorf or whoever managed to send off Noc.

i love, love, love getting rid of nocioni and his contract.

i also love, love, love adding brad miller.

i love losing gooden too – just can’t stand watching his inconsistency.

my only major question – is this a good cost-cutting move for us ?

I haven’t checked the numbers. curious.

by swede2287 on Feb 18, 2009 3:49 PM CST reply actions

miller's contract ends next season

and salmon’s has an ETO at that time also – so depending on how he fares, he could also be gone in 2010. he’s also cheaper than nocioni anyways.

That's good news. i'm pleasantly shocked by such a good move.

actually i’m freaking thrilled.

miller will be a nice add…..he’s lost a couple steps and isn’t athletic for sure….but he can hit jumpers and is smart. (smarts that gooden definitely didn’t have). he could compliment our athletic bigs well.

I would also guess we see less (or none) of Aaron Gray

Which is typically good. Unless Yao Ming comes to town and we need to throw some big flabby guys at him.

This is Matt's dream trade.

(well, as much as can be hoped for)

it screws any room for next year w/o unloading hinrich.

So at this point, it really becomes: Gordon or Hinrich.

agreed

People really underestimate Salmons’ and Miller’s abilities. Very good, smart players, especially offensively. Our team actually has offensive talent now outside of Rose, Gordon, and Disappearing Deng. We are making the playoffs now, unless Vinny REALLY screws rotations up.

At least Larry Hughes isn't overrated

Wait let me get this straight

We got a legit center who expires in 2010, we got a wing in Salmons who can flat out play, (just isnt the best shooter, so I dont know how he pairs with Rose, but still huge upgrade in play making abilities) We got rid of Drew Gooden who is useless to us now and he was stunting the growth of the young guys we have in front of him, and we got rid of Noc who if we didnt have Deng wouldnt be so bad, but since we do he is an extremely over paid back up… WOW… WOWO WOWOWOWOWOW

by NamingRightsOnSale on Feb 18, 2009 4:05 PM CST reply actions

much better at it than Noc.

Being better than NOC

Being better than NOC does not make any one good… Now if he had more “fire” “hustle” “desire” “toughness” “Grittyness” than Noc, than we can compare, I was comparing him to what we use at SG/SF now in BG, Kirk, and Deng

So does this get us into the Play offs?

I like the move we lose two players I couldn’t stand and a guy we didn’t use much. I wonder what the Micheal Ruffin move is about and I’m aure they would of pulled Kirk or Ben off the bus if we we’re moving him. Maybe it’s Larry and Ruffin for Trash?

by Bullsfanla on Feb 18, 2009 4:05 PM CST reply actions

The way Thomas and Noah were playing without Gooden?

They might ahve been playoff bound anyway, if barely. Just add Miller to what’s happened the last two weeks, I’m sure tht’s a playoff team, if used properly.

Both Noah and Tyrus will benefit mightily from Brad's interior passing.

Miller in the high post feeding Deng and Tyrus on cuts could be a thing of beauty, and gives us another option on top of Rose slashing and dishing.

Brad Miller Helping Rose and TT

Something I would like to point out about Brad Miller, with his ability to be on the high post cause he can shoot or pass so well, it opens up Rose and TT to run the high S/R with TT rolling to the basket. We dont have to see another 20 footer by TT on a pop cause thats where Brad Miller will be. Same applies to Noah.. I just hope VDN doesnt screw this up..

I am impressed and surprised. But doesn’t it seem that Deng and Salmons are both to good (in theory) to be reserves?

Maybe something (trade?) is up with Deng.

Can someone explain Salmons role on this team?

He’s too good to be a bench player and he can’t play ahead of Lu, so what’s his role?

He can replace Larry Hughes as the designated pouter

Supposedly he hates coming off the bench (and doesn’t play well as a reserve either), so that may be an issue.

That's exactly what I expect.

And I don’t disagree. Salmons doesn’t produce if he doesn’t start. BG is much more mature about being sixth man, and can still produce from there.

And honestly I'm ok with it

Gordon isn’t coming back to this team anyways. It’s probably a good time to get the team adjusted to scoring without him in the lineup.

I don't really know how much other teams are interested in ben gordon

He sure can score, but he’s undersized and can be very selfish at times. BG wants a big contract, but I don’t see any team overpaying and paying BG what he wants, especially in our economy as of right now. BG is gonna try to get his money, but no team will give it to him.

I was adding some numbers.

Miller makes 12 million and so does Hughes. Salmons makes 5.5.

Does this really mean we will have 29 million dollars coming off our books in 2010?

Salmons has an ETO (basically a player option) for 2010-2011.

If he’s playnig well, he could exercise it. But he’ll be older. Who knows?

Being older will probably militate for him opting out.

The sooner he gets his next contract, the better chance he has of getting more years. People don’t give long-term contracts to older players unless they’re superstars.

He'll be missed in a way

Noc’s biggest problem was his contact and his usage. Pax completely overpaid for him and that screwed the roster for the last 2+ seasons.

I didn’t have a problem with his role off the bench as a 3 or occassional 4, but Skiles/Boylan/VDN played him to much at the 4.

None of that is Noc’s fault. His style of play is matter of strong opinion around here, but that shouldn’t have been a surprise for the last 3 seasons – he was who we thought he was.

Plus, now who’s going to team up with Luol Deng for that awkward international vibe when the they do “Name that Tune” on the big screen during timeouts?

he's fine as a 4

the problem was putting him at the 4 and gooden at the 5. if we had a big center to put him with, it would be different.

but right, his usage wasn’t his fault. i’ll miss him in a way. i liked him in the earlier seasons – but it was kinda clear he’d had enough here.

True - on this roster there wasn't a 5 that he matched well as a 4

Or, hell, wasn’t there an odd line up to close out a big win this year that had Noc as the 5 and Deng as the 4? Maybe I’m confused…

Look at the assisting and usage %‘s in advanced stats. Basically, Gooden’s a ballhog. Miller’s a facilitator.

Think of either having a shot with Thomas and/or Deng cutting to the basket. The shot goes up w/ Gooden. The ball gets passed to Deng or Thomas with Miller.

How does this trade help?

Thomas and James’ contracts both run through next season, same as Hughes. So you swap Hughes for another shot-jacking guard and throw another mediocre, injury-prone big man into the mix? Doesn’t make any sense is all I’m sayin’.

by peruvianidol on Feb 18, 2009 5:00 PM CST up reply actions

No it doesn't

make a whole lot of sense. Pax just promised a trade to Larry, and now he’ll have to do the same to these guys……. But the season is mostly over and perhaps they can be traded as expirings over the summer??? Keep them players movin’…..

McGraw:
STOUDEMIRE STILL IN PLAY?
I’d say the only way the Bulls trade Hinrich for an expiring deal is if they have something else brewing. One theory is Collins and whoever else (Sebastian Telfair as a backup for Steve Nash?) would be sent to Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire, along with Tyrus Thomas, Thabo Sefolosha and draft picks.

By moving Hinirch’s salary ($10 million this year), the Bulls would be able to take on Stoudemire and have the ammunition to re-sign Ben Gordon this summer.

If everything worked out, the Bulls could get a desirable starting lineup of Derrick Rose, Gordon, Luol Deng, Stoudemire and Joakim Noah, with Salmons and Miller coming off the bench.

It’s too soon to tell what the chances are of this coming true and there may be other trades still being circulated. But this appears to be what the Bulls have in mind.

Yeah, I know the Suns supposedly backed off trading Stoudemire, but their need for payroll relief is still an issue. All that talk might have been an attempt to build leverage.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 2 p.m. Central time. It will be interesting to see if anyone sits out tonight at Milwaukee. I’ll update as soon as I know.

Updated EPN.com article pieces
Talks between Sacramento and Chicago moved to an advanced stage this week, as ESPN.com reported earlier Wednesday, after the Kings were unsuccessful packaging Miller and Salmons in a deal with New York.

Salmons
The Chicago-Sacramento trade is likely to be finalized later Wednesday, but one source close to the process cautioned that the deal could still be expanded to include additional players.

Another source indicated that the Kings had hoped to convince Chicago to accept center Mikki Moore instead of Salmons so Sacramento could trade Salmons in a separate move. The Bulls, though, want Salmons and the Kings did not oppose it because of long-term financial savings they’re gaining from the trade.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3916703

Apparently San Antonio, New Jersey, and Dallas were all going hard after Salmons as well.

The Spurs are looking for any type of help they can get.

They’re horribly thin and their window is closing. Salmons proved that he can be a high usage guy, and everyone knew he was on the market. This was about as high as they could shoot with the assets they have.

But I also find it encouraging.

by arjoseph on Feb 18, 2009 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

spurs aint thin

they got a great rookie prospect combo guard in George Hill, Roger mason jr, manu, parker as a guard rotation with finley playing the three and occassionally a little 2.. Bowen fills out minutes at SF and udoka has fallen pretty much out of the rotation after playing the the conference finals.

Salmons would be an upgrade. It speaks volumes that they think he is good enough to trade low end rotation players, but not good enough to trade roger mason or george hill.

Salmons is going to be a seroius issue if he comes off the bench in Chicago. I love him as a player think he is really valuable as a fourth banana on a contender or a main man on a bad team like sactown.

As a sixth man? Ugh… TZ did some numbers a while ago and it is amazing how poorly he performs coming from the bench, like not good amazing…Time will tell.

Anyone else think this trade is just okay?

I like Miller, but by most indications, Salmons is a bum. His 5.55 adjusted+/ was the 3rd worst among all starters last season, and his career 109 defensive rating (116 this year!) is just as bad. Even worse, people seem to think he’s good, meaning he’ll get minutes.

So we get a legit center, which is good, but it’s at the cost of 1) less minutes for Jo and Tyrus, and 2) losing Ben Gordon after this season, and 3) playing Salmons, all three of which are not good. I expect Hinrich/Gordon to be traded tomorrow.

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:18 PM CST reply actions

The last two are true.

But the first one is not. Miller will not take more minutes than Nocioni and Gooden combined. They also got out of one year of Nocioni, and possibly/probably two.

it’s a risk, but there could be some great benefits.

Exactly.

Yeah I'll concede that point

Although I wouldn’t be surprised if one of Jo or Tyrus is always on the bench in crunch time now. With Gooden on the team, I had hope that our young guys would clearly emerge.

Changing the subject a tad… I was just talking to my friend on the phone, and he hates the trade. He said “the downside is we lose Gordon, the upside is we go from a 9th seed to a 7th seed for the next two years. How could anyone see that as a net gain?” He might be onto something.

trading hinrich/gordon would make a lot of sense.

especially gordon, who is going to walk away after this season anyways because we have no money to resign him.

by Orange Juice on Feb 18, 2009 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

here's my take on it

1) Noah will lose minutes, but Tyrus can play the PF position and is more suited to do so than playing the 5 spot.
2) I honestly don’t see there being that big of a market for BG. In this economy, I can see him being the Manny of basketball with less talent. There’s still a chance in my mind that he’ll come back, but the Bulls have to trade away some of the guards on the team to give BG or captain kirk minutes.
3) Salmons is not that bad of a player. I’m gonna give him a chance first

I actually expect Hughes and either Gordon or Hinrich to be dealt tomorrow.

by aznsensation on Feb 18, 2009 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

Noah can play alongside Miller just fine.

Miller has the range you usually want from a PF.

Thomas – 30-35 mpg @ PF
Noah – 15-20 mpg @ C, 10-15 mpg @ PF
Off the Bench:
Miller 25-30 mpg @ C

If anyone struggles, Deng at PF is perfectly acceptable.

WADE TO CHICAGO 2010

officially starting this movement right here right now!

we’ll have about $30 mil free to go after the 2010 free agent class.

now that gordon is all but gone, can’t think of a better backcourt pairing than two CHICAGO guys.

by Orange Juice on Feb 18, 2009 5:21 PM CST reply actions

You guys are sleeping on

Salmons. He brings something that chicago really need. Someone that can create his own shot and get to the line. He also brings height in the SG position. Kirk and Salmons will probably backup Rose, BG, Deng while Noah will backup Tyrus and Miller.

Also with all the injuries sac has had, Salmos has shown he can do a decent job playing pg, sg and sf. We can experiment having Salmons, BG, Deng, Tyrus, Noah while Rose and Miller rest. This will allow BG to guard the opposing PG and use Salmons in the point on offense. And for his skillset and a border lin starter, 6th man, his salary is cheap

But then again, VDN will probably pu Salmons in the pf position lol

by trig on Feb 18, 2009 5:33 PM CST reply actions

Haha most likely

Salmons doesn’t really get to the line though… 4.4 FTA in 37 minutes is shit for an 18ppg scorer. And yeah he’s tall, but tall is only good for defense, and Salmons doesn’t bring any of that either.

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

He's replacement-level

Which is what Nocioni has been for the past 2 years anyway, but Salmons is cheaper. I still have hope Hinrich is getting traded to Portland, and there will be a chance to bring back Ben.

Gordon could likely take any offer because he hates Reinsdorf and wants a change of scenery. The Bulls had to get at least some kind of insurance policy for the SG position.

"You guys are sleeping on x"

Seems almost as if people are posting facsimiles of dusted-off responses to the Hughes acquisition: “He brings something that Chicago really needs. Someone that can create his own shot and get to the line. He also brings height at the SG position.”

Don’t get me wrong: I think Salmons is a more useful player than Larry Hughes; nonetheless, I wouldn’t overstate “what he brings” to the Bulls, particularly when he (a) plays the same positions as two of our best (and most handsomely paid) players, yet (b) isn’t a better starting option than either.

His defensive adjusted +/- and defensive rating are very good. I never thought he was a great defender, but Gooden is awful and it seems Miller is at least average.

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

He might be...

…but they shipped two poor defenders for one. (excluding offense, of course). They won’t put Miller and Gray out there together (Dear God! That’d be awesome!!!!), so Deng, Thomas or Noah will always be paired with Miller.

Gooden and Nocioni could both be paired w/ Gray as well as with each other.

That’s three combinations of a bad defensive PF/C pair to zero. I dig.

it’s just, it’s great. unless he’s just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy worse than gooden, in which case, it’s the same on defense w/ it being better still on offense.

What's the plan?

Look, I’m as happy as anyone to get rid of Noc. (Sam Smith, in one of his more lucid moments, once said that the GM’s role was partly to get rid of players the coach played too much.) But what is the plan here? Since signing Ben Wallace, Pax’s moves basically consist of giving out bad contracts, then trading them for other team’s bad contracts. How does getting two starters from the worst team in the league help the Bulls in the short term or the long term? If you think we’re shedding salaries to sign Wade/Bosh/Amare/LeBron or whoever in 2010, you’ve obviously forgotten about the summer of 2000…

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

Nocioni has 13.5 M until 2012

With the synchrony in this trade, especially at the FA class of that summer, it will provide a lot of hope, I guess.

After the ‘09/’10 season, the expiring contracts of Brad Miller and Larry Hughes will amass to 25,905,268

by NittanyCub on Feb 18, 2009 5:47 PM CST up reply actions

You realize we only cut $1.0 million off our 2010 payroll with this trade, right?

If we don’t trade Hinrich, our salaries in 2010 will look like:

Deng: 11.3
Hinrich: 9
Salmons: 5.8
Rose: 5.5
Tyrus: 8?
Thabo: 4?
Joakim: 3
1st rounder?
1st rounder?
Asik?

Thats what, about 50-53 million for seven players, and the cap is around $58 mil? We don’t have the money to throw at a big name.

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

Right, any big, out right signings still need something shed.

BUT… a package of Miller + Hughes + Noah/Thomas + draft picks for Bosh/Wade/etc. + a bad contract is more possible now.

besides, 2010 guys like Bosh, Johnson, McGrady, etc. if their teams don’t think they’ll re-sign, a year from now they can take Miller, Hughes and Thomas, have a lot of the money still coming off the books.

It’d basically be like this past weekend with Stoudemire, only they’d have LeFrentz and Sczcerbiak-sized contracts.

I’m running the calculations on salaries: if Salmons doesn’t exercise his ETO, if the the Bulls give the QO both to Thomas and Sefolosha and the TO to Rose and Noah, their total salary for after the 2009/2010 season will be $44,901,067. Before this trade, it was $42,943,067

Salmons has an ETO and will be 30.

He’ll either take one more year at $6.5 or opt out and take a longer guaranteed contract for less per year. I think it’s fifty/fifty whether he opts out.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

by tyger1147 on Feb 18, 2009 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

provide some reasoning please

mine:

He’d be one big injury away from never playing again and only $6.5 million for the rest of his life.
He’ll get more guaranteed money if he opts out.
It will be the summer of 2010 and there will be a lot of teams with space hoping to get Wade, McGrady or Joe Johnson that will at least spend some of the cap on Salmons.
Athletes almost always opt out early unless their skills have just gone to complete crap. I don’t see that happening w/ Salmons.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

by tyger1147 on Feb 18, 2009 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I'd guess he opts out

Just 18 months removed from averaging 18ppg for the Kings, he’ll probably be able to get more than 6 mil.

by YaoPau on Feb 18, 2009 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

Even if he doesn't, a 3-year MLE of around $5...

…could look better. That’s $15mil guaranteed compared to $6.5. Players, especially at 30, almost always take the guaranteed more money.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

by tyger1147 on Feb 18, 2009 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

That's great but

1) we won’t be the only team with $$ to spend

suns get cheap pf that can run up and down the court
get more contracts that expire in 2010

bulls get more cap space to resign gordon, plus get amare…you can resign gorodn and keep amare without the two conflicting each other in 2010 because ideally if we are winning (which i believe we will be) amare might just decide to stay with chicago and not opt out in 2010 and thus we are set with a team that has rose, gordon, deng, noah, amare….which i think is pretty damn good….give the suns a shit load of picks too….

I LOVE THIS!
Chad Ford: A few weeks ago the Bulls finally got bold, attempting to work a complicated three-team deal that would land them Chris Bosh. The problem was, the Raptors and Suns weren’t willing partners.

In comparison, the Bulls trade for Brad Miller and John Salmons seems pretty underwhelming. How is the addition of Miller and Salmons the change that the Bulls really need? The answer, I think, is that it isn’t. Miller was once a force in the low post, but his best years are far behind him. Salmons is a good, versatile role player, but doesn’t really address their weaknesses in the front court.

However, another shoe could be dropping in Chicago. League sources continue to insist that the Bulls might now be done. As Marc Stein reported this morning, the Bulls and Wolves have talked about a Kirk Hinrich trade that would send back some more cap relief (Jason Collins and either Rashad McCants or Brian Cardinal) to Chicago. If the Bulls pull the trigger on that deal, they’ll have only $25 million in committed payroll coming into the summer of 2010. They could have even more space if Salmons opts out of his contract in the summer of 2010.

That would make them serious players in the 2010 free agent market for … you guessed it … Chris Bosh. A source close to Bosh told me this afternoon that Chicago would be his first choice as a free agent destination that summer.

While another year and half of mediocrity might be too long for some Bulls fans, a core of Derrick Rose, Luol Deng, and Chris Bosh might be worth the wait.

"A source close to Bosh told me this afternoon that Chicago would be his first choice as a free agent destination that summer."

::faint:: wake back up:::

The Hinrich deal could make even more sense if the Bulls could get a draft pick from Minny for him. Than, in the summer of 2009, when Bosh is up for an extension, they could offer 2 lottery picks (assuming the Bulls don’t make the playoffs), Tyrus/Noah (or both), and Larry Hughes’ expiring deal. I don’t know if it works on the trade machine but it seems like some combination of that would be really enticing to Toronto over the prospect of losing him for nothing.

i just think if you go to the Raptors with that trade this summer

2 lottery picks and their choice of Tyrus or Noah and a big expiring deal (Miller or Hughes) than they would have to think seriously about making that trade immediately. it would be hard to field a better offers. And if you think Bosh is a superstar player, than why not pay a little extra to make sure you land him a.s.a.p instead of letting Donnie Walsh, Pat Riley and Lebron James have a crack at persuading him (among others).

Wow, watching Sportsnight and the Bulls players were commenting...

Luol Deng looked PISSED. Like someone shot his dog. All he said is “Um, we’ll see how it goes. We knew something was gonna happen and things are still happening.” (Supposedly Noc and him were very close.)

Then BG also looked down, saying “I thought something would have happened earlier, like last summer with the guards and everything we have. I don’t really know what the reason was for this trade. It’s just hard for me to say.

Kirk was more upbeat, and said “I can’t really control it. The rumors are always there, I can’t control it.”

And then VDN was pretty upbeat too (compared to BG & Deng) saying they became a better team.

Pur yourself in that kind of position

being on a team for a while, and then hearing about being traded….i cant imagine it being a good feeling> although logically what you say makes sense, and even to the player the thought may make sense, but it doesnt mean he has to like it. He isnt getting more money, and depending on where he goes…he mgiht not like where he is sent…

i think im the opposite of tyger that i think about these kind of things, the perosal reactions to players (not just kirk) and wonder how it must feel for them. Noch probably feels betrayed and probably cursed out everyone while packing his bags…..while gooden probably takes a deep sign, and just tries to keep it from being personal. Plus being traded in the middle of the season, i mean….im sure kirk was racking his mind with the thought of this happening for awhile, and im sure he will live but you gotta think he wont be upbeat…no matter if he gets minutes or not….kirk never wanted to be THE guy….he wanted to just be a vital member of a team….he could have been fine coming off the bench if that was where he truly was best.

the argument for gordon was the same…if gordon had in front of him a sg that was really better than him, i think he wouldnt mind being on the bench, but since there wasnt he hated being labled a 6th man, with 6th man money and starter responsibilities and minutes. Hinrich has a pg and sg that are both in front of him who were better in thier respective positions….he knew that he wouldve been fine coming off the bench…

Uhh this turned into a hinrich rant, and i am not arguing he shouldnt be traded, just telling you that its not easy for a good solid player to dismiss being traded mid season

Noce and Gooden were really classy with their comments.

They both expressed their regrets that they were leaving Chicago, saying it was a good organization. A lot of other players always try to show up their old teams, blaming them for their deficiencies and what not.

thank you

i translated upbeat to happy….professional probably means he is not showing anything on the outside and going crazy inside….which is what id be doing if i were him….being traded is part of the sports world, but i cant imagine it being pleaseant ever…especially the first time it happens…especially for one of our bulls who are all pretty timid, reserved, and generally no attitude individuals…id say kirks’s personality is much like a kerr or paxson, so i can see him being stressed out while trying to remain pro…

are you suggesting that gordon doesnt get signed

and kirk is kept?

I wish this trade happened earlier (cuz damn it….it was possible!!!!) cuz then we couldve seen a few games and judged how salmons was or not.

Since alot of teams were intrested in trading for salmons at any rate, i wonder if the bulls could work out somethign and get rid of salmons for more cap relief somehow….

Yeah, well, Deng

has to man-up, so to speak. If they’d gotten it done, they wouldn’t be in this mess. And BG: the reason for this trade was Salmons is a better defender and shooter than Noc, and Miller is the most skilled of our big man. Oh and, contracts. So…yeah.

Kings here

You’ll really like Salmons if he starts, he does it all well. Off the bench, hmmm, nooot so much. Seriously, he’s a steal.

B52s best days are behind him – but a trade might spark him for a while. Not the greatest attitude guy though. If you’re looking for low post, well he ain’t it. He’s a high post player who passes incredibly well from there and hits 12-15 foot jumpers 9and some 3s) at an efficient rate in the ‘catch and shoot’ mode.

Hinrich rumors dying

RealGM

Reports on Wednesday have suggested trade discussions between the Wolves and Bulls in talks regarding Kirk Hinrich being sent to Minnesota for a combination of Jason Collins, Rashad McCants, Brian Cardinal and possibly one of their extra first round picks.

When asked about the prospects that the Wolves will make a trade by the deadline, Kevin McHale told Jerry Zgoda, "Not great, probably not. But who knows."

For what it's worth, Hollinger likes it
Chicago: This is an outstanding deal for the Bulls, who dump one bad contract in Nocioni and get a big boost for the playoff run with Salmons and Miller. Of course, the Bulls were hoping to strike richer with their combination of Drew Gooden’s expiring contract and the $5 million exception from the Joe Smith trade, but once Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire were off the table this was the next best option.

The moves set the Bulls up for a nice free-agent run in 2010, especially if Salmons opts out of his contract that year. And since Chicago is enough of a major league city to be a free-agent lure despite its blustery weather, the Bulls stand a decent chance of ending up with Bosh or Stoudemire via that route a year and a half down the road.

In the short term it helps too. In Miller, the Bulls get a physical interior player who can shoot and pass, and one who may be rejuvenated by playing on a better team. He should be an excellent complement to the Bulls’ more athletic but less skilled combo of Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah. Certainly he’s better than Aaron Gray.

As for Salmons, he’s quietly become among the most productive two-way wing players in the league and should supplant Larry Hughes and Thabo Sefolosha in Chicago’s guard rotation. If the Bulls’ discussions to move Kirk Hinrich pan out, it seems Salmons’ role will be nearly as large in Chicago as it was in Sacramento. Certainly he’s a major upgrade over Nocioni, who had taken to hoisting wild shots, and could put the Bulls over the top in their quest for a playoff berth.

However, if I’m wrong and the Bulls can’t carve out playing time for Salmons, there could be trouble. The one negative about Salmons is his reputation as a me-first guy who gripes if he’s not getting lots of minutes and shots. Grade : A-minus

With that one caveat.

I love when traded players talk about how it makes them feel wanted

Drew had a few quotes along those lines, but I thought his kind of read like he was choosing to look on the positive side – like hopefully this means they want me, but if not I’m a UFA. And Larry’s used that line before.

It seems our new friend Salmons wants to be wanted as well:

•Salmons shared his thoughts in an interview with the Sacramento Bee.
