Cameron, Chicago: I had read that OKC was going to be gunning for Ben Gordon this summer. Does the trade for Chandler change that?
Chad Ford: Depending on where they pick in the draft, the team will still have something like $7 to $8 million in cap space left. That's probably more than enough to get Ben Gordon.Wow, I'll laugh if after twice turning down 10 mil a year the slumping economy and lower salary cap dictate BG signing for 7 million with the Thunder

$8.75 million first-year salary over 5 years = ~$50 mil, or about $10/yr.
Oh, and he’d be on an up-and-coming team with a real “star”. Yeah, it’d be hilarious.

no shit
even if it was starting at $7m, by that calculation he’s getting $40.6m and combining that with the QO he’s at $47m for the 6 years.
Not to mention anyone sounds like a dumbass if they’re happy Gordon took less money to play elsewhere because he’d be playing elsewhere.

Rec'd, that salary calculator is cool find
Ben’s going to be pissed about not getting a raise this offseason, but it might open the possibility of a short-term contract, something that wasn’t in play before. I could see Ben signing a 2 year / 16 mil deal and give free agency another go in a better market, which I think is the perfect situation for us.

Just FYI, 3 years at a time to keep "bird rights"
hence, why some speculate he might take the MLE for 3 years this year in NYC, to run w/ D’Antoni for three years and score 25 ppg.

Let's do some math
8.75 million x 5 years = 43.75 million. I don’t think a 7 million difference warrants the “approximately” sign. And 8.75 is higher than what Chad for suggested. I was going off Chad’s numbers, and 7 million at 5 years is 35 million.
Now Ben wanted more money than Deng. Correct if I’m wrong, but I believe he was looking for 10-12 million a year. He wasn’t going to get 12 but the Bulls offered somewhere around 9-10, right? If the Bulls offered 10 and his arrogance leaves him with having to take 7 million? Well that’s 15 million dollars he’s lost out on. I think that right there is pretty funny.
Oklahoma may have Durant but he’ll also be living in Oklahoma. And he’ll also be in the western conference where the Thunder still will have to deal with the Lakers, Jazz, Hornets, Blazers, and Spurs for the next few years.
Now whether the Bulls should have offered him more money is one issue, but him refusing to take what was offered and winding up with less, thats funny.

His contract would escalate per year each year. He loses out on some money, but not much
and its a lot less funny when you realize that he’ll be playing for someone else next year and we’ll be stuck with Kirk freakin Hinrich as our starting two guard.

I don't see how OKC can sign him.
They’re going to have around $54 million tied up in salary and draft pick free agent amounts. Salary cap will be around $59 million at most.
This trade ends the Ben Gordon to the Thunder stuff. If they didn’t trade for Krstic, they’d have a realistic shot at him, but not any more. They just don’t have the money.
I would say right now, Gordon re-signs with the Bulls, signs with the Knicks for the MLE, or sign and trade. I don’t see him signing outright with anyone (Memphis/Hawks I believe can do so) now that Miami/OKC are out.

where do you get $54m?
I have it at $48m considering players. Is it that much for the cap hold on the picks?

From the Hoopshype Numbers.
It’s $50.5 million adding up their salary numbers. Then I just allotted $3.5 million for their draft picks, which is a low estimate even.

Chucky Atkins is non guaranteed
Here’s their salary outlook.
I’ve got them at $50.6M
- $2.8M (Chucky Atkins)
+ $1M (Serge Ibaka)
+ $4M Draft pick
= $52.8M.
Figure the salary cap at anywhere up to $61M, giving them probably $8.2M. Enough to make a reasonable but not overpowering offer for Gordon or another FA. They could, of course, also shed other salary before then.
They’ll have 11-12 players under contract, so they won’t have any meaningful cap holds.
by Sports2 on Feb 17, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I can't see the salary cap growing to $61 million.
That was my estimate before the economy went in the toilet. I think minimal growth to $59 million is the most likely. That only leaves them with $6.2 million, using your figure for them, to spend on Gordon. The Bulls could beat that offer with very little effort.

Even $59 million...
Could be a little optimistic for the cap next season…
Even though the Bulls could beat any offer he receives next season, they don’t have the right to match, and may not be willing to beat another offer…but at least we could sign and trade for Nick Collison…

Maybe LOPT is Kirk Hinrich's mom?
Maybe we can?
by Granny Waiters on Feb 17, 2009 7:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I see...
Tyson Chander – $12.25
Collison – $6.35
Watson – $6.6
Kristic – $5.16
Durant – $4.8
Westbrook – $3.75
Green – $3.56
Wilkins – $3.3
White – $1.04
Weaver – $.87
Atkins is unguaranteed, according to Shamsports.
That equals $47.68. W/ the cap hold of a their pick between $3.5 – $4.0 = $51 – 51.68 million. That leaves about $7 million. And if they happen to win a couple of games or get knocked down a draft spot or two, that’s a bit more.

I'd laugh if Gordon wasn't on this team
Because then I read a thousand blog posts telling me why Thabo Sefolosha could easily average 17 points a game as the starting SG.

Hey, he can lose the ball just as good as Gordon. Better, even.
I dunno about everything else, but if there’s one skill Thabo has of Gordon’s, it’s that.
