If You Don't Hate JR, You Should

Disclaimer: For those of you that like to just guess what the post is about and then comment (i.e. eveyone), I don't care about the Kobe or KG trades. What I care about is that we refused to get a high profile coach for financial reasons and that we are on the verge of letting BG walk and not pushing for Amare because of his contract. Read on for why this infuriates me!

JR and Pax have done a lot of frustrating things to us Bulls fan. There was KG, there was Kobe, and now there's potentially Amare all let slip by. While it's very frustrating that the core we kept over those players has regresed significantly, I can't be too angry at Pax. They were all young and they were playing well. It seems he felt it was in the best interest of the fans to stick with what we have.

Fast forward to today, and we're 7 games under 500 without a playoff spot and with no one near KG or Kobe in skill level. Frustrating yes, but hindsight is always 20/20, so no use crying over spilt milk. Now, there is something far worse than this that absolutely infuriates me and I'm surprised people don't complain about it daily.

JR IS CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/32/nba08_NBA-Team-Valuations_Income.html

We are generally at the top of operating income by a large amount, this year beating out the next best Lakers by 7.5 million, or about 16%.  Yet we are only 11 on team salaries. We're going to most likely let Ben walk because apparently JR refuses to go into luxury tax at absolutely all costs. And it seems we may not be making a strong enough push for Amare because again, we are too worried about the costs. Again, for reference, the average income per team is 10.7 million. So JR is making 518% of the average income and still absolutely refuses to go into the tax. We are not some small market team that needs to save its pennies so we don't get relocated. We're the Chicago Bulls, a gigantic market, and yet our owner refuses to go into luxury.

It's not just a issue of cheapness, it's a matter of respect. Most organizations need to win so that they can continue to make money. We are loyal enough fans that we will go to the games no matter what, and how does JR reward us? He continuously builds a team of young, upside players, or in other words....cheap contract players.

The final insult, the really dispicable act... letting D'Antoni go to the Knicks. Now I'm aware we didn't know we'd have Rose at the time, however, our team just suffered a massive regression after being a 49 win team, and instead of bringing in a trusted coach that players respect like D'Antoni or Van Gundy, he brought in VDN and signed him to the cheapest coaching contract. Once again, the team and the fans are compromised for the sake of being the most profitable team at all costs.

So while I'm not gonna through a parade for Pax, I think fans should at the very least be pointing fingers at JR before Pax.

I'm so tired of looking at past potential trades

He wasn’t the reasons behind Garnett or Kobe.

You can make an argument on the Gasol trade for not wanting to go into the luxury tax, but that’s it.

JR ain’t as bad as many believe

by Option27 on Feb 16, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

We have VDN specifically because JR is cheap, not because JR thinks VDN is somehow more qualified than D’Antoni, Tom Thibodeau, Van Gundy, or Flip to name a few.

I used to think coaches were overrated...

by blademan88 on Feb 16, 2009 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

No matter what you may think or what they may say

I think everyone knows VDN was just a fill in a couple of years type hire.

Whether you like what he’s doing or not, the main objective of VDN was to develop the young players.

And the 3 I wanted to see develop more than anyone this year was Rose, Thomas and Noah . . .

They’re all starting to finally pan out.

He’s not here long term.

No one thinks it, nor should you

by Option27 on Feb 17, 2009 1:53 AM CST up reply actions

Unless VDN is back next year and turns into a good coach.

After all, Stan van Gundy went from being a bad college coach to a good NBA coach.

Maybe we can?

by Granny Waiters on Feb 17, 2009 4:07 AM CST up reply actions

D'Antoni could have developed them just as easily, and more effectively

And Thomas and Noah weren’t even playing until Drew Gooden got hurt. So if that’s why they hired Vinny, it’s a stupid reason.

Why resort to name calling?

Enough with the Kobe "trade" talk.

The Lakers were never serious about trading Kobe – I would not be surprised if the trade talk was PJ’s idea of a mind game for the rest of the league (sure caused the Bulls to implode).

The truth will out this summer, when Ben Gordon is signed – by who is the question.

Maybe we can?

Read the article. I don’t care about the Kobe or KG trades!! I care about signing VDN because he’s cheap or not signing Ben Gordon because of the tax.

mostly because he wouldn't pay the tax to resign BG. his own love affair and overvaluation of

bums like Noc, Bum Wallace, and Kirk are what got us into this mess, and then he doesn’t resign the best player on the team because of the lux tax? Ridiculous. Fuck JR.

+1 All of your reasons are right on

Not to be forgotten is that at one point he had to choose between Krause and Phil (and the domino effect). Could we have won 7? 8? 9? We’ll never know, but at least we know that Krause got his “organizations win titles” shot and he went on to create the most pathetic Bulls team in history.
But then again, “if he had kept the dynasty together, we never would have gotten Rose, so it’s worth it”. BTW, sarcasm detectors on, please.

I wonder if this will really matter in a few years

Because there is lots of talk that the salary cap could really decrease in the future. If that’s the case, then teams are going to be just as luxury-tax averse as Reinsdorf currently is. This is all just random thoughts, but what if Jerry realized in the summer that the economy was heading south in a bad way, and decided to mandate both his sports teams either slash payroll or keep on a budget?

Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?

I already dislike JR

The coaching fiasco this off-season convinced me that Reinsdorf is a hindrance to the Bulls ever being good again. I wish he’d sell his stake in the Bulls and focus solely on the White Sox. After all, baseball is his true love, right? Didn’t he say that his world series trophy with the Sox meant more than the Bulls 6 championships?

Screw him.

I blame him for the state of our team

Everything starts with him

-he wouldn’t pay Phil so we lost him
-he is weirdly loyal to incompetent individuals like Krause
-he has resisted changes, scouting in our organization seems light years away from other organizations( I think Houston, San Antonio and Portland are the models we should embrace)
-he is the ultimate old guy watching hoops( Arrrgh dammm kids with their headbands and hip hop, I want defense and bounce passes get out of here weird italian coach with your scoring and watchable offense, Yes, hard working white guys like Bird lets pay them waaaay tooo much, Dammm Cuban and his maverick ways)
-he doesn’t like Basketball isn’t that much of a fan and would rather use the Bulls as a piggybank for the crappy white sox
-he hired Paxson, and passed over BJ who was way more enthuastic about the job
-he constantly cuts off his GM from power,- Deng deal, coaching hires
-he is more concerned with corporations than the fan hence the United Center
-he has destroyed all of the good will that MJ created during his time here

Ultimately in my opinion he is happy with the Bulls and he likes collecting money from loyal fans like us. He has not embraced the new NBA at all , he doesn’t even see that he is the problem and he has been slow to change the culture of this franchise. His pride has hurt us.

The one good thing is that he gives the reacharound to Stern so we got the #1 pick and Rose

It's hard for me to get mad at a guy for not losing millions of his own dollars.

Sure, I’m disappointed that JR isn’t Mark Cuban or Kevin Pritchard (because that would be awesome), but I’m also relieved that he’s not Michael Heisley. JR’s vehemence about the tax makes a lot of sense when you consider what he’d be paying (not only the multiplier effect, but also forgoing the league profit-sharing payment). You can make a case that he’s merely being responsible with his money. It’s not like we’re one piece away from a championship. And it’s not like he’s forcing his GM to slash payroll as much as possible, including shipping out a young franchise big man for table scraps, just so he can put more money in his pocket. We’re right up against the tax line. Dude isn’t being irrationally stingy. He’s being normal stingy, and I can’t begrudge him that because I don’t know if I’d be any different.

Sure, you can make the argument that because the Bulls make so much money, he can spend a little more and still not “lose.” But what would he be buying? A marginal playoff team? When the time comes, and spending more money takes us from playoff team to instant contender (like the Pau acquisition did with the Lakers), and JR still doesn’t spend, then I’m with you.

what gets me

is that he could see this as an opportunity to poach some of the poorer teams. Instead he’s going to cry poor too.

thats the worst part about this.

we could be working over some of the teams that are having real financial difficulties. The Bulls have been averaging $50 million in profits for over 20 years only dipping into the $30 million range a couple of seasons.

Its really a fraud approach.Memphis, Minn, Milwaukee, NO, Suns, Possibly Utah, and a few other teams are ripe to be ripped off on a talent perspective.
