If Michael doesn't care about the Bulls anymore ...

If Michael Jordan doesn't care about the Chicago Bulls anymore, he should not bother coming to events like the one we just had for Red Kerr.  Going from three pieces while exiting the locker room to wearing jeans to a formal ceremony, Michael has become full of himself.  He thinks he is better than everybody else so he doesn't have to dress up.  His commercials just have him making a two second appearance laughing at someone.

He hasn't done anything for the Bulls organization since his retirement.  Not that he has to, but it would be nice if he would show some Bulls pride.  I can't believe there was nothing this decade to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of 72-10 or the last championship.  They probably would not turn out too well anyways because MJ would ruin it.  During Pippen's retirement ceremony, he dressed in jeans and took the attention away from Pippen.

Jordan was just laughing during the entire ceremony this time, acting like this was a comedy club.  This was a tribute, but he barely showed any appreciation.

I love MJ.  I have posters of him all over my room ( I was a kid during the dynasty).  But to me it seems like he is a different person now.  He was a man who always looked for a challenge.  A man who wasn't challenged enough in the NBA so he left for a different sport.  He inspired millions to achieve beyond what they thought possible.  Now the only stuff I hear about him is his new favorite cigar or motorcycle racer.

If he ever wants to come back to the Bulls, he should be more appreciative.  Jordan and Phil Jackson act like the Bulls organization was their b_____.  I don't think Jordan and Jackson care about the Bulls anymore.  Their contributions to the Bulls will probably never be matched, but I feel more joy and pride when I hear the name of a guy like Red Kerr.

Just because the guy doesn’t wear a suit you have to post this huge rant about him not caring about the Bulls? A little overboard.

The green jacket was a bit much

But I gave him a pass when thinking maybe he wore it to be “irish” in honor of Red Kerr night. A red suit jacket would have been even more hideous.

It isn't just the jeans

It isn’t just about the jeans. The jeans are just an example of lack of care and appreciation about the Chicago Bulls.

MJ is the best basketball player ever. It would be nice if he associated himself with the Chicago Bulls for the rest of his life. Instead it seems as if he is separating himself from the Bulls. If he wants to do that, fine. That’s his loss. He could become what Babe Ruth is for the Yankees. You think Babe Ruth, you think the Yankees. You think Michael Jordan, outside of Chicago you don’t necessarily think the Bulls. If he does not want to be a Bull for life, then don’t bother showing up to events like the one today.

by Looney_Bucky on Feb 11, 2009 12:00 AM CST reply actions

Well, he is part owner of the Bobcats.

Maybe JR or EE should have offered MJ a share of Bulls ownership.

Maybe we can?

by Granny Waiters on Feb 11, 2009 12:02 AM CST up reply actions

I felt the same way....about 10 years ago

Jordan’s just an ex-player. It’s fine. I agree he doesn’t feel like ‘a Chicago Bull’. He’s bigger than that, and deserves to be.

But I don’t care for what he did after leaving, and rarely mention him here. He’s a non factor.

That said, he should be at events like this, there’s no need to shut him out. His comments (and jeans) were appropriate.

Now he can go back to ruining the Bobcats and the Bulls can move on as well. I think that most people already have done so a LONG time ago.

And there are pretty few ex-dynasty guys around

A lot of them came back for Pippen’s ceremony, but other than Paxson, Cartwright, and now Stacey and Wennington there isn’t a lot of connection between the 90s players and the current franchise.

I just don’t get this type of talk because Jordan is already Babe Ruth status. He’s deified by every basketball fan out there, and frankly no one will ever grow up liking basketball without hearing about Michael Jordan, and by extension the Chicago Bulls. What more does he need to do besides show up for these big events? He is part owner in a different franchise, showing his face more in Chicago would be a slap to Charlotte.

I fully agree

As a GM of another team, he has to be careful not to show up at too many functions for other teams. Even if he is MJ and can pretty much do whatever he wants, he seems to understand that being a business professional means sticking by your current team.

I will say this:

Jordan is absolutely full of himself. At Scottie’s jersey retirement…there was some back handed compliments…“i had to finish a few fights scottie started.” Most people have a different delivery on a retirement joke like that. they are looking for a genuine laugh. Micheal is just putting nails in the coffen. Its just that MJ never learned how to deliver a speech like that. Micheal says those things in a serious matter of fact way and a certain arrogance that leaves you feeling he means it…It was scotties day and micheal was compelled to toot his own horn. and he did the same tonight with redd kerr. after the applause stopped for MJ, it was almost likeMJ forgot why he was even there…why he was there:

A Kid from canaryville that went to tilden and the U of I, and went on to coach the Bulls and be the broadcaster forever, a guy himself worth of his own statue for committment of service was dying and being honored and all MJ could muster was “he really cheered for us.” It was very sad.

On the brite side MJ, Pip, Redd, and others were in th eluxury box directly behind me. 10 feet away all night. Pretty cool. I gotta say…pretty cool. I think I might have to re-ink that old scottie tat on my left nalga afterall. we’ll see how i feel in the morn. could be the vodka talkin’?

Looney_Bucky, Dude I'd bet you hate casual friday's, companies allowing shorts in the summer,

I wasn't even around in the 1980's!

I wore sweat pants and a a hoody to class today. I don’t care about style. But I would at least have the decency to dress up appropriately for a formal event like this.

by Looney_Bucky on Feb 11, 2009 11:54 PM CST up reply actions

Dude.. a personal question that I don't intend for you to answer just ponder...

Have you “yet” ever been or achieved the level of being the “BEST” or one of the “Best” at anything? in your own mind at the very least?

It doesn’t matter what.. (it could be playing sports, chess, ping pong, pool, or mathematics, science, cleaning person.. it really doesn’t matter what occupation or profession)

Many people spent they efforts being average with contentment, and conformity. Wearing a stupid shirt and tie. Please tell me what functional purpose does a Dress Tie serve? Other than to make you uncomfortable especially if your’re a jock with a large neck. Maybe the purpose of Conformity?

Looks to me MJ met the formal event (15 minutes) requirements, Jacket, Shirt, Pants and no gym shoes.

Personally, I’m not one to give much effort in what color dress such-n-such wore on the red carpet at the grammy awards. Therefore have the decency to respect Diversity. That’s what makes America … America

Since by admission, you weren’t around in the 80’s you probably were quite young also to appreciate really what MJ did for the Chicago Bulls organization.

Suggestion: when you go to class tomorrow, try some of your own medicine.. and wear a crisp collared shirt and a nice pair of pressed khaki pants.. No really it might make a better impression to your professors, but utimately your performance in class will determine your grade!. Even if you choose to wear a hoody and sweat pants.

So you want MJ to be just like the rest of “Us” …. Average.

man up!

Dude, not only did Reinsdorf not offer him a position when he left,

but he basically said, “Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.” And same for Phil.

Reinsdorf came down on the side of Krause in the “organizations earn championships, not teams” debate that should have never even occurred. He underpaid Jordan throughout his first contract and then again by the end of his last multi-year contract. And although he eventually paid Jordan to make up for it, at about $30 to $35 Mil per year, he would tell the press how painful it was to part with that money. Jackass, that’s the best money you ever spent! Way to ruin the good will that comes with a gesture like that by whining to the press about it. That’s good will among ALL the players and future players in college at the time, who notice that kind of stuff.

And when Jordan left, Reinsdorf made it clear that Krause would remain in charge of personnel decisions, which meant essentially that there would be no room to have Jordan, Pip or Phil on the payroll while Krause was still there. And as mentioned above, Reinsdorf didn’t (so far as we know) offer Jordan a buy-in, either, like the Lakers did for Magic.

So don’t give me this steamy pile about Jordan having better manners and more loyalty. He’s here in spite of Reinsdorf’s repulsive actions. We as fans should take it for what it is, and enjoy it.

poppycock

I doubt that Jordan ever wanted to ‘buy in’ to the team. He wanted to be ‘gifted in’.

He then went on to trash the Bulls post-retirement, and I don’t doubt hurting their rep around the league and making it a harder place to attract players. So he got his ‘revenge’, if you feel he deserved it.

But I think we ultimately agree on their current relationship. He’s an ex-player and the Bulls can live without him being more of a ‘presence’. Show up every so often for old stories and a cigar.

Yeah, for stories, a cigar, and the parties

with people that are his kids’ ages (scroll down for the picture, one of many of Jordan partying).

But anyway, clearly, the post-playing era was never going to work out between the organization and its most famous player. And in retrospect, much as I hate to admit it, Jordan proved Reinsdorf correct in Washington, and now continues to do so in Charlotte. After making an occasional appearance, that’s perhaps his best gift back to the organization—wrecking other franchises.

Did MJ spend a dime of his own money to buy a piece of the Bobcats?

I know he didn’t in Washington. Hell, who can blame him; if some jock-sniffing owner is dumb enough to give you a piece of their team because of your name, why not take it? Reinsdorf isn’t a dummy, though, and he probably prefers to get paid in actual cash.

And MJ’s done absolutely nothing as an executive to indicate that he’d be any kind of an asset to the Bulls now.

There's this article,

which vaguely implies that Jordan actually put some of his own money in:

“I’m excited to join Bob, and invest alongside one of the most astute businessmen I know,” Jordan said. “I am also looking forward to providing my advice, where needed, to Bobcats management in order to put the best possible team on the court.”

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban offered up some immediate advice.

“Welcome to my world, Michael,” he said. “Get out the checkbook.”

The article also talks about Jordan attempting to purchase a majority stake in the Bobcats.

The point is that it would have been great if Jordan’s and Reinsdorf’s personalities were such that Jordan could move seemlessly into some sort of organizational position with the Bulls. That way, he’d be the best recruiter for a franchise that has whiffed on ever major free agent acquisition attempt since the Jordan era, except for Ben Wallace, and we all know how that worked out. Remember when the Bulls sent Benny the Bull to the airport for T-Mac and ended up with Eddie Robinson? Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, heck, even Tim Thomas spurned the Bulls.

Anyway, that’s just how it is. But saying that Jordan should be the biggest booster for the Bulls when he works for owns another team is just being unrealistic.

exactly

maybe he DID try to put some money up to “buy his way in”…who knows? Surely we don’t.

And even if he did try to get gifted in, is that much of a crime? Seriously, he put the franchise where they are today…financially.

How good a "recruiter" has he been in Washington and Charlotte?

Where are all the free agents that have flocked there because Michael Jordan owns the team? Free agents care about three things – money, chances of winning, and lifestyle issues (weather, state taxes, etc.). Jordan wouldn’t have helped with any of those three.

Yeah, we can't know for sure what would have happened.

But the truth is that at the end of the championship era, Jordan had a chance to be special in retirement, just as he was special in his playing career. But as discussed above, there was acrimony and clashing styles and personalities on both sides—his and management’s/ownership’s.

But if there wasn’t (and obviously, this is pure fantasy, but IF there wasn’t), then Jordan could have helped the Bulls tremendously as they transitioned from championship era to a young team with direction and mentorship. Think David Robinson in San Antonio. Think Magic in LA. Or Nate in Seattle right after his retirement (although they didn’t win it all). These guys were stabilizing forces behind the scenes.

So yeah, even though Jordan has been less than notable as a recruiter of free agents, he had a chance, and the stage was set for him, to be a great recruiter and mentor for the organization that he put on the map.

bullhockey...I agree.. and Bulls should be hanging at least 7 championships not just 6 banners

a point missing here is along with great players come great egos. Deal with it, or only be happy with players with attitudes like Kirk and Deng and content with under .500 winning percentages. (don’t get me wrong.. nice complimentary players, but not superstars)

Personally, I can tolerate Babe Ruth, Ali, and Michael Jordan type “Egos” because these guys are associated with greatness.

Everyone can’t be a Fedor “Baddest man on the Planet” type personality? This is sports, this aint no church or chapel for monks!
