Aaron Gray to Blazers - Trade Proposal

I suggest the Blazers acquire Aaron Gray for a 2nd round draft pick (since Gray's salary is less than the Blazers' cap space, no player needs be sent back to the Bulls).

Why the Blazers do it:

- Oden is out for the season, so the Blazers could use another center to backup Pryzbilla.

- Gray can provide some post offense and rebounding, and while not a great defender, is a huge body with 6 fouls to give.

- The Blazers give up very little, since Gray's contract expires at the end of the season, and Paul Allen can always buy another 2nd round pick from a financially struggling team.

Why the Bulls do it:

- The Bulls do not have enough salary space to sign a badly needed 3-pt. shooter and/or reserve PF, and Jerry Reinsdorf will not go above the luxury tax. Trading the little used Gray would open up $1M to sign another player.

Why Gray approves the trade (since he is on the qualifying offer):

- A chance for more playing time, which will increase the probability of getting another NBA contract next season.

Your thoughts?

(Also posted over at Blazers Edge to see what they think.)

I can this happening

its a minor move in so many ways, but it helps the bulls sign someone for depth….

its actually something i would do in 2k (not that i did) just to make room in both cap and in roster. And the blazers lose like nothing, they are gonna be a pretty good team this year, so we would be getting pick number 50 or something overall…they wouldnt be losing anything….\

Then again pritchard probably doesnt want to help anyone and i dont see him ever using gray either…

I can't see it happen

Blazers are too smart….they won’t want to take a crappy big for a 2nd round pick, even if that 2nd round pick turns into crap, it still is probably better crap than big Aaron…

Sadly....through thick and thin....

gray is still

more athletic than Miller, he just needs jog more on a day to day basis so he can run the court better. Skill wise, He is as good at the 5 spot as Pargo is at the 2 spot, and I’d rather keep him and give Noah a breather than get rid of him and be forced to toss a winded Miller out on the court. They need to take advantage of Jerome James 6mil expiring and find a one dimensional spot shooter to beef up the 2.

I voted No.

But then I remembered we have Jerome James, who I think is ready to break out. So lets go for it.

they must be drunk

isnt there a reason that no one in the league gave a contract to Gray except for the bulls (thei reason being that they are idiots)? At this point what’s the difference between signing some D-leaguer and an out of shape Gray. If I were them, I would rather keep the second round pick and give luke Schensher name a call or whatever other 7 footer with limited skills is out there. I have a visual memory of him playing for the blazers at some point but i might be confusing the image with bill walton.

Happy Birthday Gray!

What a great gift that would be… he could play the third center on a good team that might make the playoffs! Its gotta be better than being part of our team on the downswing.

And there's the Turkish guy

waiting in the wings to replace Gray in the role of making sure the end of the bench doesn’t float up to the rafters.

Pick a random D league roster and select the C on that team

That guy plus a 2nd round pick >> Gray

I don’t see why the Blazers would do this.

Maybe the Bulls can sell high on Taj! and get a 2nd rounder for him.

Yea, trading a 26 pick 2 months into the season for the ~50 pick sounds like more of a Bulls plan.

We could’ve used Thabo this year, he’s making less than what Hunter and Pargo cost and he would provide so much more.

Pargo is fun to watch sometimes, when you’re down 20 you should be shooting tons of 3s and going for that once in every ten games hot streak comeback win with your bench, but other than that he’s not worth much on our roster as the only true SG. If he were in Hunter’s role as 5th guard, for less than 2m, I would be fine with him, but he’s a little too high in the rotation as it is, with the injuries we’ve had he’s in way over his head (as is Hunter, who shouldn’t even be in the league). On the off chance a guy like Hunter or his friends read something like this, I don’t mean to rip Hunter. I like the guy, he was a good player and is a good influence on the younger guys, but just make him an assistant, not use up a roster spot and veteran’s minimum when young guys could play for cheaper minimums and do more.

by RyPac13 on Dec 8, 2009 11:56 AM CST reply actions

I agree with everything you say about Hunter

Seems like a great guy. And you can see he knows how to play point guard. He just shouldn’t be on the roster.

My plan would be to bring in a D league guy to take his place and make Hunter the interim head coach.

I'd do it in a heartbeat

but I can’t see Pritch-slap making this deal. He’s too “schrewd” or whatever adjective they’re using to describe him these days…

I voted yes as well

because of course the Bulls should do it. I just see no reason why Portland would want Gray even with Oden out. They still have Juwon Howard as a backup plus Gray really sucks. They can probably bring in some D-league player that would be better than that.

The Blazers have 15 guys, so they'd have to trade someone back

We’d only have 12 guys, so we’d have to sign someone anyway.

So a player has to be involved. Jeff Pendergraph was a guy I though would be an excellent late 1st round sleeper/second round pick. He’s 6’9 and 240lbs with a nice game and athleticism. Unfortunately he had some kind of surgery and is out for a while. Likewise with Patrick Mills, a PG prospect everyone seemed to like who got hurt in the pre-season. I

I don’t know when either one of those guys will be ready to play, but I think it’ll be sooner than when Aaron Gray actually contributes something. Which is going to be never.

Love it

Especially this part… LOL

Gray (…) is a huge body with 6 fouls to give

Why do the Blazers do this?

There’s an Aaron Gray on every team in the D-League, 20 in Europe, and one who’s my doorman. Why give up anything to get an Aaron Gray?
