Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Don't have a video, unfortunately, but here's the quote:

"When asked if he was embarrassed tonight, Rose smiled and said "um, yeah it's like a Monday, like when I was back at school after a weekend". Then he laughed."

I saw that, and in my opinion,

I’m much more worried about his horseshit play and his awful attitude during games. He plays like he’s there to please his teammates, turning down easy layups for kickouts to John Salmons. This team does nothing right, and the only reason for watching this team is to see Noah play.

I listened to him after the game I couldn't even make out what he said.

I starting to get a bad feeling about this kid. He really has lost some edge.

This is what I was afraid of after his first season

He’s gotten used to losing, throughout highschool and college, he only lost a handful of games and now he’s losing the edge, the swagger

That may be true...

but that’s true for almost any draft pick. I would venture that most lottery picks have lost a grand total of 15-20 games in their high-school and college careers. The sheer volume of NBA games (twice as long as NCAA) means they’ll lose more in their first year than their previous 6 or 7.

What edge?

Sure, he played well last year, and had that great game 1 against Boston, but I never saw much of an edge from him.

So he must be feeling really bad tonight then, to compare it to going to school.

Sporstnite had the video and it really didn't sound all that bad to me

I watched it and didn’t think anything of it, then came on here to find this. Seemed to me like he was just trying to make light of the situation with a little joke that didn’t go over too well. I would be more worried about his play than his words. And his play really has been shit, or just totally average since about halfway through last season (minus the Boston game).

His problem is simple, he plays with no heart. And when I say “heart”, I don’t wanna sound too meathead-ish, what I’m really saying is, he has no motor. He needs to eat whatever Noah’s eating. Just take a look around the league, all the best players play a high energy game and are constantly competing. While Rose just sits on his ass coasting for entire quarters not even willing to contest a pass or fight for a rebound.

Then of course after the game he’ll come into the locker room and mumble something about how he just wants to win or some bullshit. Well Derrick, you do know that your play CAN affect the outcome of a basketball game don’t you? Do you know that in the NBA you have to actually play really good to win games rather than just say that winning is important? Somebody above already said it, and I agree, the kid is not that bright.

Thank you

The alternative is for him to just force things which will lead to more turnovers. He could be more aggressive in many cases but I truly don’t think the kid is healthy or up to speed conditioning wise right now.

Very well said

but your observation about Rose’s demeanor being consistent across high school, college and the NBA just reaffirms my notion that Derrick’s not cut out to be a #1, franchise player. Great #2 guy, but we need someone to take control of this team. Noah playing that role is great, but you really need your most talented/best player to be that guy.

I don’t think Rose is that guy.

thank you for this comment.

i have attempted to solicit explanations on this site for how the absence of a great shooting guard can result in more big men clogging the lane and until now i had not heard one that made a lot of sense. this is a really thorough answer which is what i need since i am still such a new basketball viewer. thanks again, you really should fan post this.

Great stuff

That was a very accurate description of our awful offense this year. I agree with most of what you said, but when I was referring to his motor, I wasn’t solely speaking to his offensive game. I probably could have clarified it better, but I meant in all aspects of his game.

Even though his teammates are not making plays for him, as you pointed out with our pick and roll situation, I still feel like there are way more plays for him to make, especially when he’s getting the type of defensive attention that you just mentioned. When he gets deep in the lane, every assist is a kickout. There are rarely if ever any lobs and I seriously can’t remember the last time he got one of his guys a dunk off a nice pass around the basket area.

Also, I was referring to other things such as rebounds and steals. I’ll admit that I probably watch Rose a little too much and somewhat have tunnel vision when it comes to this team. so perhaps I’m overstating things a bit, but I just don’t see him making aggressive plays in either of those two areas. Really great post though:)

Getting beat soundly is one thing.

Getting blown out is another thing, but getting blown out on your court in your hometown, while the fans who paid to see you play and…..they stayed to watch the whole game is another thing entirley. Derrick comparing this to high school and then laughing shows how immature the guy is. Noah was pissed and he showed it, Derrick gets blown out and he jokes about it? Rose is gifted athlete but he’s just not very bright. The more he talks the more shows it.

by Mr Rhythm on Dec 6, 2009 10:07 AM CST reply actions

He did have someone take the SAT's for him

If he’s going to play this passively, maybe he can get someone to play point guard for him too.

First Deng won't steal a ball now this

Honestly, I refuse to come down hard on the players on this stuff. The attitude of a team stems from their coach. Some players simply need a swift kick in the ass and someone to tell them that their play is shit and they better step it up. Noah doesn’t need a kick in the ass. Rose clearly does. Sure, the players like VDN, but he hasn’t taught these guys to play like animals out there on the floor. When healthy, I would argue that the Bulls have close to if not the most athletic lineup in the NBA. Rose is the most athletic point guard. Noah is a top 5 athletic center. Ty Thomas might be the best all around athlete in the NBA. Deng is not super athletic, but he is really long and can run the floor. How the hell has VDN not figured out that this team should be doing nothing but attacking the rim? Oh wait, because this is the first team he has ever coached! If he can’t get effort or “heart” from his players, bring in someone who will push these guys. WTF do we need a big name free agent for? It won’t do any good if they turn into the slouches these guys have turned into. If we had Mike D’Antoni in here, these guys woul play shittier defense, but a million times better offense. Get some crazy dictator of a coach in here if you have to. Someone needs to say enough is enough. Play your ass off or have a fucking seat on the pine.

STOP GOING TO BASKETBALL GAMES!

That is all.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

This is absolutely pathetic on Derrick’s part. When you lose, there is nothing to joke about. Especially getting blown out a home by a sub .500 team. That shit isn’t funny. He shows no personality or caring during a game but has the presence of mind to joke around after getting the shyt kicked out of him. He’s really regressing mentally in my opinion. I’m more worried about his state of mind during games than his injuries. He needs to start being a leader like Jo is and not accept losing. He needs to lead by example and go all out. Stop passing it to Salmons or Miller if you have an open layup. Sometimes he needs to be a little selfish. We need a spark right now, I only hope Tyrus can provide it when he gets back.

The way it’s looking right now are we even gonna make the playoffs. We’re just lucky that Philly and Washington are playin so shitty right now.

A lot of this comes down to Vinny. No one fears him, no respects him. It seemed like at first that at least they would play hard for him. But this is like the 6th straight blowout besides Detroit. Not just losses, over 10 point losses.

This is getting ridiculous. I’m not going to switch teams b/c I think that is some traitorous shit. But I always have a West Conf and East Conf squad I like. So I’m gonna start watching the Nuggets more.

How about posting the entire quote?

"The confidence is low," conceded Rose. "We’ve got all day tomorrow (off Sunday). Everyone has to come back focused. We don’t have the worst record in the league, but somehow we have to get over .500. We’ve got to defend. We feel bad. It feels like a Monday and you have to go back to school."

Yeah, that really sounds like a guy who is just laughing and joking about getting his butt-kicked.

yeah pls

read the whole quote before making an opinion.

by aznlildelfin on Dec 6, 2009 9:03 PM CST reply actions

The one thing this quote definitely confirms for me

is the fact that Derrick Rose really, really does not like school. He compared multiple blowout losses in a very short time span to showing up for class on a Monday. That is kind of harsh.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 7, 2009 1:28 AM CST reply actions   2 recs

the full quote

that kris posted made it seem like the monday at practice is like going back to school because of how much work needs to be done.

not that the actual losses were like school.

but that’s just how i interpreted it.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

LOL I feel the same way about going to work on a Monday

after a weekend off. This is Derrick’s job and a Monday after a weekend off is the only thing he can relate to. Don’t bash the guy for using an analogy for what he’s only experienced.
