I would still trade the bulls roster

for kobe, like they should have a few seasons back. Wasn’t Deng the dealbreaker for the bulls at the time?

kobe would have nixed any trade including deng.

so even if the bulls were willing to trade him, it was a dealbreaker the other way.

There is nothing to control .. a team full of average players, why expect overachieving day-in and day-out

mgmt hung them all out to dry… Gordon was the best player on the team for the last 3 years, and he wasn’t even a superstar. But better than average.

(no low post scorer coupled with no explosive wing scorer… this is a recipe for a bad team no matter how we get frustrated and try to blame the players or the coach)

Don't think so. BG fit this team better than most possible players in the league.

Bulls need shot creation and floor spacing, desperately. He’s one of the better players in the league at spacing the floor and can create shots for himself whenever he wants.

by fundamentallysound on Dec 5, 2009 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

I agree there's something to the fit of teams

Mo Williams + average Cavs offense last year → dominant Cavs offense. Not sure how much of that was fluke, but there’s probably something to it. That losing Gordon turned the Bulls from a 110 rating team to a 100 though seems like an oversimplification.

by YaoPau on Dec 5, 2009 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

is it really, though? He did so much for the Bulls offense. And apparently letting

him walk wasn’t some magical cure-all for the defense (obviously).

1. Cut a hole in a box

by fundamentallysound on Dec 5, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know how much Gordon affected the team, but it might be more than we think.

They’re making 40% fewer 3 pt FG this year and at a 7% lesser rate. For a team that relies on jump-shooting so much, that’s pretty huge. Getting rid of Gordon accounts for 2 of those fewer makes (notice how, contrary to what you and the organization claimed Gordon’s “shots” weren’t taken by someone else) and a clip 10% higher than what the team is doing now.

Gordon accounted for 1/3 of the team’s 3FG attempts and made them at 41% rate.

The team is also taking 12% FT’s per game and making them at 6% less rate.

The two most efficient plays in the game, drawing fouls and shooting threes, having been drastically reduced. This does not take into account the peripheral, indirect affects of these shots, such as foul trouble on bigs, more FT’s later in quarters for the team (due to being in the bonus) and the all-too-famous “spacing” of the floor to let super awesome drivers of the basketball like Derrick Rose to have a little bit more room.

Finally, the indirect effect of getting rid of a “ball hog” and creating ball movement in ASSISTS, has decreased as well, not increased like we would have been led to believe.

*These are not pace adjusted. The Bulls were 10th in pace last year and are 26th this year. I am not adjusting for pace, because, I believe that bad offensive teams like to play slower, maybe even subconsciously.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Why can't the problem be a simple one?

In my experience, the biggest problems are often quite simple.

In this context, sure, Gordon was just another piece. Just like the keystone is just another piece in a Roman arch. Look at the keystone, and it’s about the same size or even smaller than the other pieces of the arch.

It’s also the difference between a functional piece of architecture and a pile of rubble.

First, their D is way better than Toronto's and second, they have won a ton of games.

That's a ridiculously simplistic argument to make. Especially bc Calderon

is just as bad on D as Nash and not nearly as good on O.

I don't understand what the point is that you're trying to make.

I said the Raptors D sucks (it’s historically bad) and the fact that we couldn’t score on it is pretty damning. You responded with some nonsense about the Suns.

My point was that our team and coaching are pathetic.

Not that it should necessarily be surprising that they got blown out, but that it’s an indication of how pathetic this team and its coach really are.

Calderon is definitely better than Hinrich.

Derozen would be our first player off the bench.

So yeah, talent wise they beat us hands down.

by Khalid El-Amin on Dec 5, 2009 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

i dont think the Bulls individual defensive talent is that far superior

to Toronto’s with Hinrich out.

Turleyglue_when he wants can be a physical and pesky defender in the mold of kirk. Rose is just not that good. Salmons is prolly average at best. Deng is above average. Tyrus is a good help side defender-at best (and is out). Kirk is a very good defender (and out). Taj is a rookie. Miller is old (sh)
Noah is very good defender when the opponent doesnt overwhelm him physically and at thsi point barley above average (albeit improving).

with kirk out I’d say they have as much individual ability to defend as we do. and offensively they are much better.

The fact that we have defended as well as we have this year is definately something Vinnie can hang his hat on.

Like I said previously, the problem lies beyond the coaching

It’s the lack of the will to compete. We saw this yesterday against Cleveland and we sure as hell saw it today. We just sorta stopped playing. There is no excuse for this.

When you don't trust the "system" this is what happens

Honestly, I think our putrid offense excellerates the “quitting” thing. We can’t score enough to compete and the players know it.

And wasn’t this game supposed to be “easy”? We were supposed to regain our confidence with this game, but if anything, we lost all of our confidence (whatever was left)

the bad

is that they seem to have let the stupid circus trip difficultly get to them. i mean, it’s over with and they generally competed, even as they fell apart at the end of many of the games.

then to come out like this at home? after being slapped by lebron and the bitchdance? it’s just so incredibly sorry.

Deja Vu?

I remember two years ago against Toronto before Christmas, the Bulls absolutely laid down and Skiles pulled the ever popular “five for five” substition in the third quarter. This loss tonight was about as bad. At least Skiles had ideas offensively and defensively. I thought that Paxson was impressive with VDN’s creativity when he interviewed him? Have you seen a more boring product? We bring Del Negro in with a Phoenix pedigree with the idea that he can employ some of those ideas with Rose. Then, he hires Bernie and Dell and tries just about everything last year without a plan. Then, in an attempt to become a defensive team, they let go the player best suited to play with Rose (along the way, they never taught Tyrus how to effectively screen and attack the rim hard like Amare in Phoenix). The final nail in this coffin will be when we are shut out of every major free agent next year and either spend like the Pistons did (A level money for B level talent) or roll it over and try again in 2011. All the while, Derrick and Noah will get frustrated and start to evaluate their options on the open market. Will Rose’s love of LA coincide with the Lakers creating cap room in three years. I feel like I’m watching a History Channel 2012 scenario.

by Gene Banks on Dec 5, 2009 10:45 PM CST reply actions

This point isn't against you, but since you brought up the whole Vinny-Phoenix thing,

what the hell did Paxson think with this hire? Vinny was an announcer, the director of player personnel and the assistant GM? What about that screams head coach? He obviously didn’t blow Pax away with his abundance of basketball intellect, as he clearly has none, so what did they see in him? It’s one thing if he had some coaching under his belt, but shit, he’s a rookie coach. It’s like buying a kid with a drivers permit a Lamborghini. There’s a reason kids start off with a fifteen year old beater, and there’s a reason most coaches start as assistants or down at the high school and collegiate level, not at the freaking NBA. Jeez, just thinking about this is getting me all riled up.

I feel to offset this negativity, requires a fanshot from me. I see blue skies ahead for this team as long as they don’t upset the chemistry by getting rid of our leader, Vinny.

I appreciate the positive energy

Clearly, if we attack more and bring more energy, we’ll be fine. Of all of my favorite Bulls cliches, the bringing of energy, whether we here it from VDN, Skiles, Stacey King or any player, is always the source of our success or failure. Not the fact that we stand around on offense, have one person under the boards for rebounds, we don’t utilize schemes to leverage the talent that we do have, and we’re horrible evaluators of our own talent. Other than that, things are looking up.

by Gene Banks on Dec 5, 2009 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

Pretty excited about this loss

I’d like to see wins as much as anyone else, but a middling Bulls team hovering around .500 (which would be the best case scenario given the team’s coaching deficiencies) would just provide more cover for VDN’s incompetence.

The Bulls need to treat their VDN quickly and decisively. Only then can the healing begin. A few more losses like this one and the brass will have to respond.

like stacy king, why not punish the raps and calderon with derrick at the top of the arc, right from the get go? they did it a lot last year. (and that’s just for starters.) i’d rather see more movement actually, but if they’re intent on having three guys standing around for “spacing”, why not four if it means a more effective pg/star player? mix it up some.

am i missing something, do they even iso derrick unless it the obvious-last-shot-scenario?

Nobody knows why he got the first because, get this...

It happened during a commercial break and Neil Funk wouldn’t shut up about some other nonsense story when they got back. I think it had something to do with a call on Taj that he objected to, but who knows?

The second one was for throwing the ball into the rim stansion thingy. I think he just wanted to go home at that point.

The only thing offensive on our team is the coaching.

Anyone see what Houston has been doing?

Nobody can convince me that Houston is more talented than we are, yet they have a better record and are far more competitive than this sorry ass Bulls team. Look at their roster: Brooks, Lowry, Scola, Ariza, Hayes, Landry, Buddinger, etc, etc. Look no farther than their coach. Adelman is the real deal as far as coaching goes and if he were here I absolutely believe this team would be no worse than a sixth seed. Honestly, the guy is a genius. Sure, the stat-oriented management there has obviously done well getting productive lesser-known players, but hell, they play the game right.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 6, 2009 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

Nice incisive comment filled with finely detailed arguments, I give it an 8.9

You should look at their stats before typing up something like that. I may dumb as a bag of rocks, but it’s not because I think Brooks and Rose are equivalent in 2009.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 7, 2009 1:08 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Brooks is not equal to Rose, talent-wise.

And Ariza is very overrated. Him and T2 are almost equal.

by Stacey_Is_King on Dec 6, 2009 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Talent-wise, no. Production-wise, yes

Here’s Brooks this season.

Here’s Rose this season.

They are almost identical stats-wise. Use the player compare feature if that helps. And I do not believe that Rose’s defense is better than Brooks.

Look, Rose is an athletic freak. But that doesn’t mean he’s better than Brooks on the court right now. Having a higher ceiling doesn’t make him a better player in games this season.

The fact that he should be better than Brooks is one reason that the entire Bulls front office should probably be canned. Their ongoing disregard for the lack development of such a talented player is ridiculous.

by hitlesswonder on Dec 6, 2009 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

Having an excellent coach and a working system helps bring the most out of a player. If Rose and Brooks switched teams it wouldn’t even be close.

I'm jealous of the Kings organization

Their franchise looked like they were heading for doom last few seasons, but they bounced back by making all the right decisions: hiring Paul Wesphal, making the right draft pick and keeping the core pieces. Now they are 9-9.

By the way look at their core pieces compared to the Bulls before Rose:

Spencer Hawes – Noah
Jason Thompson – Tyrus
Francisco Garcia – Deng
Kevin Martin – Gordon

and with a high draft pick: Tyreke Evans-Rose

We had similar pieces, but they made the right basketball decisions while the Bulls hired VDN, let Gordon go for nothing, drafting wrong talents. More proof Bulls front office sucks and only cares about making money

by Teri on Dec 6, 2009 4:47 PM CST reply actions

yes! its one thing if they are cheap but

the drafting of taj and johnson still doesn’t pan out money wise, they have contracts that are pre determined, it would make more sense packaging the draft picks for one slightly higher pick (thus saving on contracts) or trading those picks for ones in next years draft and if you wanted to dump salary you could use the excuse of trading a current bulls player for any expiring PF to balance the roster. Bulls org just sucks period.

unload their aging leadership and play the kids. Salmons, Miller, Gooden, all shipped out. Hawes, Thompson, Evans get more minutes. It’s so simple and obvious, but it takes balls.

Who else?

Seriously, if Noah were on the court I doubt that this would occur. It’s almost like Deng’s attitude is, “I’m not hurt, I want to stay healthy and get my incentives, and truly don’t care about the rest of the team.”

Take a look at what Deng was doing when Noah called out LBJ for dancing. Deng looked like he was watching a movie on the JumboTron.

You work your ass off all day and night, come home, turn on the game and see this. And all of it coached by some jag (attack, derrick!) who’s never coached before. We, fans from a legit basketball city, desire better than this org. It just fucking kills me.
