Tyrus is more or less gone...

[Lockin' this down, go to the fanshot posted to the frontpage. Nobody did anything wrong here, just would rather have the discussion in one place instead of two -ed.]

An article I just found on Yahoo Sports (whose trade rumors are, at best, questionable) says that Gar Forman has been having extensive talks about trading Ty with many teams, chief among them the New York Knicks...

Star-divide

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AmaVmpdfXp5H8IHYIpQClo85nYcB?slug=aw-tradebuzz120309&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

This article (which you can read if you don't believe me) contends that Gar and Donny Walsh have had talks about trading Ty Thomas and Jerome James' expiring contract for...

Al Harrington.

Yeah, THAT Al Harrington. He's certainly not a bad player, I think I'd rather have James' gigantic expiring contract and the shot blocking/ highlight dunks Tyrus brings over the "taller Larry Hughes" skill set Harrington brings. He has his moments (he dropped 42 on Denver earlier this season), and I guess it wouldn't completely obliterate our 2010 Free Agency hopes, but I'm not sure how I feel about this proposal.

Thoughts?

I could accept a TT and Hinrich trade for Harrington

on the assumption that JR does not want TT back next season.

if it's pretty much decided that Tyrus isn't coming back next year

then I have almost no problem with this move. Basically getting Al Harrington for free.

Not sure about this...

I don’t fawn over Tyrus like some do, but I’d be willing to wait until at least just before the trade deadline. It’d be a shame if he left before showing the Bulls what he could do in a contract year when healthy. And I don’t know how we could lose Hinrich right now: w/ Pargo’s back a mess, Salmons struggling as a guard, and Lindsey as assistant coach, we’re pretty thin in the backcourt.

Apparently you didn't read the entire article

The Bulls believe Harrington’s ability to score coupled with a $10.2 million expiring contract make this a worthy exchange. Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni has long been fond of Thomas, a 6-foot-9 forward whose nimbleness and athleticism makes him an intriguing fit for New York.

Thomas, 23, was the fourth pick in the 2006 NBA draft, and started to fulfill his promise with 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds last season. Nevertheless, Chicago believes it has a worthy power forward successor on the cheap in rookie Taj Gibson(notes), and jettisoning Thomas would also eliminate his approximate $13 million cap hold for the Bulls next summer.

So this would give us an even larger expiring contract. It’s possible he could be resigned at a lower amount, maybe the mid-level exception. At worst, it frees up more cap space to sign the top tier talent in the offseason.

i think it makes it more believable

Thinking Taj is a starter is exctly the kind of thing this team would do

In context

That line is to refute the previous sentence that Thomas was growing into his potential.

Yeah, I don't get the point of this

unless they’re just trying to get rid of Tyrus. What does Harrington bring to the table that Tyrus (and Jerome James’ contract) doesn’t?

by kozzer on Dec 4, 2009 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

Nothing I can tell. At least as far as next year

This year, another important feature is it shaves another $1.3M off our salary cap. That would enable us to go out and sign a FA, if we wanted, without having to worry about the luxury tax ramifications.

In fact, we’d have to, because our roster would suddenly be down to 12 guys.

by Sports2 on Dec 4, 2009 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

and kirk too.

If we send kirk and tyrus it makes more sense for NY…and helps us cap wise…Since they stink sooo much i dont think they are getting a fre agent next year. Better for dantoni to try to make Kirk the next Nash and tyrus the next marion. Those 2 with Chandler, nate, Lee, should be a playoff contender if tyrus and kirk improve in dantonis offense.

Will we get a gaurd then

Do u really want to ship out kirik and deal with more Lindsey and pargo.

I'm cuckoo for Kukoc!!!

by Yibs on Dec 4, 2009 7:57 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

if Harrington's deal expires this is an excellent trade for the Bulls and

will have a similar effect on the Bulls this year as the salmons-miller deal did last year.

Since only a 1 player upgrade instead of 2 it wont be as big of a improvement but we finally get a player that can play at the 4. he aint a post presence but he hits 3’s around 40% for a few years now so if and or when we put brad and harrington on the court with Hinrich and Salmon the lanes should be as open for Rose as they have ever been.

And defensively this aint a huge step back with Al over Tyrus or taj…i’d say about equal or and improvement. a few years ago Al used to play d with chip on his shoulder and more or less knows where he should be and wont get hit with ticky tack calls Taj will be hit with if we make the playoffs.

This is a great trade!!!

Tyrus could expire too ya know...

It’s not that great unless we can unload more IMO.

Well, I guess it's better than letting Tyrus expire.

I wouldn’t be too happy, though.
Tyrus’ll get a lot of chances to work on his shot, anyways. :P

I support the Tornado Release ... and Young Bucks.

I do really like TT. but...

I like him not necessarily because of his on-court potential, but because of his off-the-court work with kids and communities.

BUT, more than anything, he’d be a great fit in New York, not only because his playing style really fits in D’antoni’s system, but the Knicks have needed a character guy for a long time.

Dude might sometimes get a little selfish on the court, but you gotta hand it to him for his charity work.

on the other hand, we get a big man who can score, who also has an expiring contract.

Also, I do think that if we get Al Harrington, he’s probably better as a long term solution. And by that, I mean with him, the Bulls are a lot better positioned to lure D-Wade back to Chicago.

by brianm on Dec 4, 2009 4:41 AM CST reply actions

I would prefer...

Tyrus and Hinrich for Harrington and Gallinari…although this trade would essentially phase James Johnson out since Gallinari works best at the 3 spot, but I like Gallinari, he is young and can shoot threes…or I would like Tyrus, Hinrich, and Pargo for Harrington and Duhon…Duhon has been awful this year, but we would essentially turn hinrich’s contract into expirings and Duhon is a solid backup PG…I think without getting something more (ie. cap space) in return, the Bulls should hang on to Tyrus…at least give him a chance to prove he is worth something

by DRose01 on Dec 4, 2009 7:26 AM CST reply actions

This has the ring of truth to it

1. We were supposedly about to trade Kirk for Harrington last year. Hell, back to 2003 we’ve supposedly had a hard-on for Al Harrington.

2. The Bulls need scoring help. I consider this trade roughly a push on the court, but since Harrington would be beloved and choses, and Tyrus is not, they’ll actually play him.

3. As per Bulls form, it’s trading a younger guy for an older guy, getting a short-term upgrade, and ignoring the more pressing issue that the Bulls likely won’t have max cap space anyway unless we move Salmons or Hinrich.

by Sports2 on Dec 4, 2009 7:39 AM CST reply actions

I just heard this on the radio

It woke me up. I think it’s insanely retarded. And can we find other teams to trade with. Is this mow like a tradition.

I'm cuckoo for Kukoc!!!

by Yibs on Dec 4, 2009 7:53 AM CST via mobile reply actions

I don't see how this makes sense for the Knicks.

Don’t they already have five PFs? And isn’t that one of the positions they’d go after in FA? I guess if they were able to trade Jeffries, Curry or Gallinari, and they could somehow lure Wade and James or Bosh or Stoudemire and play Thomas at the 3… I don’t get why they do it.

People should remember that while they have the right to their opinion, they are not entitled to be taken seriously. --Bruce Bartlett

I agree

but I like the proposed deal from the Bulls point of view

This guy scored 41 points in a game.

I don’t see Tyrus Thomas ever getting 30.

by chapuforyou on Dec 4, 2009 9:48 AM CST reply actions

Harrington is the tweener version of Hughes…can score in bunches at times….pretty selfish…doesn’t really like to pass or defend. Overall not a bad player but not very good either.

The Knicks just drafted Hill so it doesn’t really make sense to get TT unless they don’t wanna wait for Hill to develop.
