Bulls 96, Hornets 85
Ugh, the DVR had a Christmas curse so I couldn't watch this morning. And it looks like Tyrus did well and everything.

Can someone look up the stats for the 4th quarter?
Of all Bulls games. I suspect we are setting a new futility record. Even the free throws tank in the 4th Quarter. I bet we are the worst team in history in the 4th Quarter.
Bulls are in the 8th playoff spot as we speak.
unbelievable how bad the East is.

Get ready for the next s-storm.
It looks like Vinny is determined to have Tyrus come off the bench. He must associate how well Tyrus played not to Tyrus himself but to his circumstances and Vinny’s coaching. He even nitpicked about Tyrus’s turnovers but haven’t said a word about the other vet’s crap performances. Vinny is a moron and I can’t believe he is having Tyrus still coming off the bench.
Taj played 9 minutes, Brad played 5
As long as that keeps happening, Tyrus doesn’t have anything to complain about.
If the minutes stay that way it's fine
But I guess we’ll see if last night was due to Taj’s foul trouble forcing Vinny’s hand or not.
Vinny said he had a hard time taking Tyrus out.
When he did the Bulls started to suck again.

Which means that if Thomas makes mistakes without being great...
….then Thomas is getting yanked.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Well...
I think VDN wanted to slowly integrate Tyrus into the lineup after being gone for 22 games. it’s natural to assume Thomas’ timing would be off in his first game back.
Then again, if Tyrus isn’t starting by January, I would be upset.
Didn't he show last night that his timing wasn't off?

Tyrus had a fantastic game
last night. I could understand why he didn’t start last night but there is no excuse for it this week.
Kirk had a solid game last night. Hope he can continue to play like that. Noah was giving Kirk huge props after the game.
OK I don't know shit about basketball.
by SoulEater7 on Nov. 5, 2009 9:51 PM CST
yeah I noticed a big difference with Kirk when he starts.
At least last night I did. He seemed more focused and more involved with Derrick. More demonstrative. He must be bothered by coming off the bench. Which I can understand this used to be his team. I’d still like him to take charge when Rose sits out. He had a tendency to defer the point guard duties when Pargo was in the lineup with him. When Rose is out the Bulls become a jump shooting backcourt and so i think Kirk needs to drive and penetrate more and get to the line. But I was really pleased for the most part and his defense on Paul was starting to bother him.
I really wanna see that KU Kirk just fucking be that guy again! When Rose sits just become the engine! He seems too passive. He lost that edge some where and if the Bulls wanna make the playoffs this season he needs to be KU Kirk.
When theres no more room in hell...go to the mall
I hope.
If their not going to trade him they might as well get something out of him. Makes too much to sit on the bench.

Agreed
Kirk can serve as a good defensive captain. Couple that with a healthy Tyrus, and I can feel better about our defense.

Eh hinrich can play much better
you and i know that ;)
i wont say he plays better off the bench or starting, what i will say is, i like him in the lineup better than salmons, he at least is willing to pass the ball to the other players as opposed to doing an iso that goes nowhere…

There was a play in the third
when the bulls got a fast break steal, and noah was the leading man, wide open, while deng was handling the ball, at the last second deng passed it to rose, noah was still open underneath the rim, still calling for the ball…rose saw taj first, and although taj was somewhat guarded, passed him the ball…taj went up and dunked teh ball and got an And1…..
Do you know how noah reacted after this play? I mean the man gave it his all to run ahead, waving his hands that he was open, and kept himself open the entire play, and never touched the ball…no one bothered looking for him on that play….so how do you think noah reacted when taj got the ball…when taj dunked the ball….
He let out a yell and became excited for the dunk taj did as if he did it himself…..HE DIDNT CARE HE DIDNT TOUCH THE BALL AT ALL….he was excited for the great play his team just had….I thought maybe noah was too young, too immature to be a leader, to be a captain…I take it all back…THAT GUY IS A LEADER…Noah is freakin awesome, all he wants to do is win, whether the ball be in his hands or not….if his team is winning, he is happy…and if its not…then he will do everything in his power, and more…to change that…

Yup he threw his fist and was really excited when Taj dunked it even though he was open for 5 minutes.
That was cool. Bad on Deng gotta make those passes in the playoffs.

That really was a great example of his character. Certain other players cough Rose need some of his passion.

In the NBA if you make ass loads of money you become captain.
When theres no more room in hell...go to the mall
Tyrus has talent but does not use it right.
He has games like yesterday’s but it was due to not being able to make a shot and knew that he needed to drive/penetrate to make teh basket. SO his shot selection was good. This was teh case until he made a 20 footer then he kept shooting pretty much every time. Once he realizes that his future in the NBA depends on being an inside presence, like Noah and that he concentrate on defense and rebounding, he could be a star.
Im curious
Why is it that when Tyrus shoots his jumper, some people have an issue with it but others like Taj and Miller can do it with no complaints? If there is one person that needs to stop taking so many jumpers, it’s Luol Deng who takes some of the worst shots in basketball. Maybe Tyrus does take a shot or two per game that he should take to the basket, but for the most part, he hits them when it counts the most. I guess I don’t have a issue with him expanding his game as long as he playing defense and grabbing boards.
Tyrus started out being in love with his jumper even though it was terrible
I’ll give him credit for demonstrably improving it.
Unfortunately, this team is going to whack his ass to overpay Joe Johnson, and pave the way by playing him as little as possible, so it doesn’t matter much.
yup
I’m happy for Tyrus, but a late game benching is right around the corner. Fool me as 40 times…

exactly
I guess that’s why I’m “overreacting” about this whole ordeal. How many times are we going to give Vinny the benefit of the doubt?
People are brainwashed to criticize anything that Tyrus does wrong.
Most organizations who draft players with as much raw talent as Tyrus let them play through their mistakes. You take the good with the bad with a player like Tyrus because he will help you more than he hurts you. Last night he seemed to play slower other than a that wild layup in the 1st quarter.
Young players make mistakes like that though. How many times did he finish around the rim and take his man of the dribble? A focused TT is a beast. Unless we can get Big Al, Bosh or STAT I say keep him. I like Tyrus developing a mid-range game, because we are a better offensive team because of it.
Once teams have to respect the j, he can use the pump fake ala Brad Miller (lol) and take the ball to the basket and use his athleticism to finish at the rim. He is also a good free-throw shooter, which helps when he gets fouled. Tyrus put pressure on opposing teams offensively and defensively when he is in the game. Derrick Rose needs to work on his lob passes to TT and make him an even bigger factor.
I have not given up on TT yet and I think he just needs consistent minutes and a coach with a real offensive game-plan.
Homecoming
being honest
Tyrus is just as athletically gifted as STAT was in his athletic prime (before the microracture surgeries). I see no reason that if his jumper continues to develop, he couldn’t AT LEAST be a 17 and 7 guy.
Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make that Linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's okay to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best.- Walter Payton
i think the reason people are so quick to knock Tyrus for taking the jumper
is because, unlike Miller and Taj, he can put the ball on the deck just using one dribble and then dunk on almost anybody who gets in his path. i agree with illwill; a lot of times when he gets the ball wide open from 15 feet all it would take is a simple ball fake to avoid the defender closing out on him, and then he’d be on his way a much higher percentage layup or dunk and possibly an And 1.
for the record, the only time i’ve ever had a problem with him taking that shot is when he makes it his first option, especially when there’s nobody within 8 feet of him.
by Daniel Satan on Dec 27, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions
Yep thats the reason.
Its ok to take a shot like that every few times. But when you are an atheletic beast like he is then you put it on the floor and get the easy basket.
Tyrus is the Bulls best finisher at the hoop(easily). Some people probably see his taking jumpshots as settling for a much lower % shot than if he drove to the basket. Seems that some folks don’t understand that it’s difficult to drive if nobody has to respect his midrange shot.
Thomas is not the best finisher. He's been a bad finisher in his career when contact comes.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

my theory is the one about how the fans
(who would be average athletes at best, and at their best) absolutely can’t relate. they think it should be easy, but it’s the nba, not high school or college.
also, we could notice how much more interested tyrus is in making plays on defense, even though he can’t “beast” in traffic like amare.
the name of the team is The DIAMONDBACKS
hey did you guys see that ridiculous fadeaway hakeem the dream shot tyrus took in the first quarter.
the whole building went silent… lol. i bet thats one of the few times in history a bunch of people who dont have telepathy were thinking exactly the same thing at the exact same split second.

With the exception of Rose, Thomas provided more highlight reel moments in this one game than the Bulls have produced during his absence the past 6 weeks. Win or lose, the Bulls are watchable once again without the need to carry a barf bag.

Dils, I agree with your observations.
Every time Tyrus takes a jumper and misses, Stacey launches into his TT should have taken it to the hole speech. But if Deng, Salmons, Rose, Kurt or anyone else does the same thing, nothing is said and I’ve seen them fire a whole boatload of shots that made less sense than Tyrus’s many times open looks.
And I think it’s time for all those Tyrus failed to rotate in time, makes stupid decisions, etc. to put a sock in it. Only a blind man or a Vinny DelNegro could fail to recognize the vast improvement the Bulls showed both in energy and coverage on the defensive end with Tyrus providing solid help after Deng and company’s matador flailings allowed their men to penetrate only to meet up with Tyrus skying over the rim to disrupt their shots.
In retrospect, his injury may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, because it not only exposed how weak they are without him, but also how useless Vinny is to offer any solutions. I see no valid reason to dump TT. Instead they should figure out a way to trade Luol and pawn off Salmons and Miller to anyone who would be willing to take them.

Tyrus' Fit
Its time that someone in this organization tells VDN that Tyrus will play 35 minutes a game, absent some blatant disregard on his part for the team framework. As mentioned here, there are tons of players on the floor who get consistent burn despite being late (or absent) on rotations, taking poor shots and generally not exhibiting a high basketball IQ.
What the Bulls don’t understand is, if they would actually develop Tyrus, teach him to effectively dive off of screen rolls and use his athleticism to occasionally shoot an unblockable jump hook, they wouldn’t have to waste their money on a max quasi-post player like Bosh or Amare and spend the money on Joe Johnson (someone who can space the floor like BG and provide solid defense at the two). A lineup of Rose/Joe J/Deng/Tyrus/Noah with Taj filling a Haslem-like role off the bench, James Johnson developing his game as a backup three and hopefully one more veteran shooter (Mike Miller?) would be very difficult to defend.
To do that, we will probably need to deal Salmons in season and maybe flip Hinrich for cap space. I’m ok with this because the moves would demonstrate our commitment to taking advantage of our one advantage – athleticism. There’s no point in chasing a post presence when we want driving lanes open for Rose and weak side cuts open for Deng.
The point is not that we need a post presence – its that we need easy hoops in the paint to create spacing for shooters. A combination of Rose drives, Tyrus/Noah screen rolls and alley oops and Deng off ball cuts will get us the same thing as throwing the ball to Carlos Boozer and standing around. There is no evidence to believe that the organization can see this possibility, but here’s hoping that the next coach prevails upon the front office to identify the talent worth keeping (Rose/Deng/Noah/Tyrus) while understanding what it needs to take the next stop (Legit lights out 2-guard).

good points, especially that last paragraph...
that’s part of the reason that it’s been so frustrating being a Bulls fan ever since the “they need a legit post scorer” talk began several years ago. easy buckets are easy buckets no matter how they’re being scored. clearly a post presence would be helpful for this team, but it’s not the only way to get points inside. it’s been really frustrating watching this team constantly fail to send guys cutting towards the basket, or passes that attack the defense…. they just make life too easy on the defense.
hopefully things have changed a little with Tyrus’ realization that the game can be made easier if you direct your efforts AT THE BASKET. he seems to have woken up during his time away from the court.

Dont get me wrong
i think tyrus is upgradeable, especially if the plan is to land amare, bosh, etc…. but i think thats even more reason to let tyrus play alot….dont do what u did with bg, dont limit his minutes, play him alot, and do a trade…Is salmons causing problems with his benching? find someone who wants tyrus and make them take salmons too!
Its pretty simple, if you dont want something, you dont insult it, you dont let it get dirty or broken, you take good care of it, you put it on ebay (trading block) you advertise it extremely well, and have some sucker pay you for it. Its like basic salesman ship, basic business 101 stuff…JR should know this…NO…HE SHOULD DO THIS!!!

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, majoyenrac, Bullshooter and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light!
True
But I think the point that some on here are making is that not only should Tyrus play more, but that he should be considered an “untouchable” like Rose and Noah and he should be part of the core. Tyrus Thomas is 23 years old. Why are we ok with the prospect of trading him? What he offers is a rarity and with Noah improving, I’m looking at the front court that I dreamed about when Noah was drafted. There is not another frontcourt in this league that can be as quick and athletic as Noah and Thomas
I’ve watch players like Hinrich and Deng get rewarded without getting better while guys like BG and Tyrus are ridiculed for production. I’m sick of us fans and the media being complicit. INVEST IN TYRUS. They drafted him so we should expect them to get that talent out of him! If Atlanta can deal with Josh Smith and harness that talent then so can the Bulls with Tyrus. It’s time to expect this franchise to do their job and to stop letting them label complex players “problem childs” and allowing them to leave. Enough of that! That’s how we end up with Pax walking away from his job, VDN as coach, and Reinsdorf not going over the luxury tax while we keep filling the stadium. There’s no accountability from management but they have the nerve to label players as malcontents?
I guess im not really debating whether i agree with the managements labeling of players
But instead im saying, IF management is so set in their ways that they dont want to keep tyrus, no matter what their reasons are, at least learn from the ben gordon mistake. DOnt let him walk for nothing, as long as thomas is on this team he is an asset, smart businessmen dont just throw away assets, even if they dont want them. THey build that asset up as much as they can and then try to get something back for it….if JR is such a genius business man, then he should do this.
Im under the impression that management does not want Thomas, and thats why im saying they should play him more regardless so they cna get better things back for him…

Great name for the Bulls young defensive tandem...."The Block Brothers."
and may I suggest carrying that theme a little further, we call the Bulls coaching staff….“The Blockheads.”
Sam Smith has already reported our leader with the mind like a steel trap (always closed) Del Stubborno said he’s not going to rush things and WILL NOT PUT THOMAS BACK INTO THE STARTING LINEUP. Smith added that Tyrus certainly wants to start and generally has been resentful when he hasn’t. (If DumbNegro was managing the 1927 Yankees he would have Wally Pipp playing in front of Lou Gerhig because he admired his thrust.)
Sam says DelDumbass perhaps is sending a message of players having to earn that spot and, that if he comes off the bench for a time he’ll appreciate the chance to start more and work harder to get there
"I want to leave it the way it is," said Del Clueless. "Let’s not rush into anything. Tyrus gives us great versatility off the bench. He can play the three or four spot. With that new line-up, Kirk gives us a nice thrust and takes pressure off Derrick because he is a guy who makes plays in the open court. We want to have a pace game but also control the tempo and be smart about it" What an utter maroon (sp. intentional).
I can’t think of a better motivational killer than having to sit behind someone far inferior because my coach is trying to teach a lesson and send a message…..apparently for anyone who doesn’t already recognize the obvious. is it?……that I’m a fu*k&ng moron and no matter what my eyes tell me, my gut tells me to continue to ride full speed towards the abyss until I’m forced to change direction.
All I can do as a frustrated fan is to hope Taj plays his usual game and fouls out after about 15 minutes of delivering somewhat below average results despite giving maximum effort. But what happens if Taj plays well (by his standards). Does it mean Tyrus’s minutes will be limited further, although the long layoff demands he get more time to work the kinks out and wouldn’t it make sense to play with the starters to establish a rythym and timing? Not in DelNinny’s world.
As Noah said after the game……."It feels great to have Tyrus Thomas back "He was huge. He brings a dimension to us that we just don’t have without him. We are better in transition because of the way he runs the floor and we are also better defensively."
Vinny are you listening? Are you capable of listening? If not, you must go now before we storm the gates.

i've been saying it for awhile
But the Bulls need to really make keeping Tyrus a priority. The guy is simply too talented and too much of a game changer to let walk. He is becoming exactly what management thought he’d be when they drafted him – a guy who can effect the outcome of games in numerous ways.
I’d feel much better about the Bulls going forward if I thought they were as committed to Tyrus as they are to Hinrich. With Tyrus, the Bulls have an athletic advantage at the 4 and 5 that is hard to overcome. Tyrus and Noah running the court on every play means often at least 1 will be open, and we saw that a few times against New Orleans. I thought at the beginning of the season that Tyrus was as good as Deng, and though I’m not as confident now, I still believe they are very comparable. He is at least our 4th best player (sorry Salmons/Kirk). The Bulls already chose Kirk over Gordon. If they choose Kirk over Tyrus too, than this organization is doomed.
It is just hard for me to get too excited about what Tyrus playing well means, when the Bulls don’t seem to view keeping him as a priority. In fact, getting rid of Tyrus is part of the 2010 plan. So its hard to view his progress as a step in the right direction for the organization – which is sad.
There are no more excuses for VDN.

TT is not in the organisations plans because they want to sign a big name F.A
It makes no sense to the organisation to let him play well before he’s let go. Then we have another B.G scenario where fans regret his departure. If TT plays poorly, or gets out played by Taj, then it makes TT’s not being resigned seem like the logical thing to do. If TT plays well and the fans support him that makes it hard for the organisation to gamble on letting him go for a possible “superstar” free agent. So Vinny has benched TT, taken away his position by moving to the SF spot, and taken him out of games in the 4th quarter. Have any of you ever seen Vinny actually coach TT, or talk to him when he’s out of the games?
no, but i'd say that's more an indictment of Vinny as a bad coach rather than the coaches carrying out the agenda of the front office.
the whole tyrus thing just doesn’t make sense to me. a lot of people are saying that the Bulls are doing everything they can to trade him, but then they say the front office wants him to fail and that’s why Vinny is holding him back… how would that make any sense? i think it’s just vinny being a shitty coach, plain and simple.
i mean, even in your first sentence you seem convinced that the Bulls are gonna just let him walk. if the Bulls really don’t feel like Tyrus is a part of their future, i’m sure they realize that they’re better off getting something for him in a trade rather than letting him walk. so why would they hurt his trade value by giving him limited minutes and playing him out of position?
by Daniel Satan on Dec 27, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions
The Bull's front office has shown abysmal planning ability
And poor coordination of coach player personnel decisions. They didn’t tell Boylan to play young players. Their handling of Gordon was stupid (letting him walk for nothing when they knew for years they weren’t going sign him?). And they kept Kirk and his contract after drafting Rose (!?). These are truly bad strategic decisions.
Suffice to say, I wouldn’t be surprised that they’ve decided that TT is gone and since they think he sucks they don’t care about getting something useful for him. And at the same time, they aren’t exerting control over VDN to max TT’s trade value because they think those decisions belong to the coach.
by hitlesswonder on Dec 27, 2009 10:09 PM CST up reply actions
They knew for years?
Gordon turned down multi-year deals twice. He got what he wanted. Rotting in Detroit.
Kirk and Deng didn’t. Were the Bulls supposed to force him to sign?
Don’t let posts by angry fans skew what really happened.
The Bulls should have traded him for something rather than letting him walk for nothing
At the least, they knew for a year that they wouldn’t sign him. And according to KC:
Never understood their stance with BG. As for the pulled offer, I’ve heard they decided they made a mistake even offering it to him so even if he said he wanted to sign it, the offer was going to be pulled.
So you tell me what really happened.
What we can all see for sure is that the Bulls wasted an asset.

you're correct
if anything, Vinny knows that he himself is not part of the future either. So he should be selling out any ‘future’ and trying to win now for his resume. But he’s too bad of a coach to realize that Tyrus helps him.

that if I catch you eating anything out of the vending machine before a game I’ll suspend your ass.

Vinny has likely been told that Tyrus will not be re-signed (like Gordon, or Tyrus will refuse after
being yanked around for years) so he’s looking for excuses to cut Tyrus’s minutes.
Tyrus will play his ass off this year especially since it is his contract year. If Vinny continues to play Tyrus 35/minutes a game even when OUR SAVIOR TAJ is not in foul trouble, it probably means the team is trying to trade him at the deadline for a 2nd or 1st round draft pick for a team that wants Tyrus for a playoff run. Hell, Phoenix never wants their 1st rounder anyway.
Problem is, if this becomes obvious to the Chicago fanbase, then the fans will throw a fit that this stupid freaking organization is not putting their best players out to play with loyal paying fans….a P.R. nightmare.
So Vinny has an impossible public relations task of trying to play Tyrus on and off while looking like he wants to win.
…
No good free agent in his right mind will play for Vinny anyway.
So what the hell is this about we’re letting Tyrus go for a big free agent?
My guess is the b(Org) is wishy washy and waiting to see how free agency will plan out WITHOUT correcting the Vinny problem.
If signing free agents is the plan, the ONLY free agent the Bulls will sign could be (in a retarded enough fashion) be TYRUS THOMAS by overpaying him significantly since nobody else had cap room AND all better free agents decided the Bulls for too full of sh*t. Tyrus is probably not gonna refuse a contract in the $12M+/year dollar range.

Vinny is goin to be GONE
Has anyone read on ESPN that Vinny will be gone as soon as the Bulls find a replacement for him. I guess they offered Doug Collins the job but he did not want it.

We miss you, Ben Gordon!

I got $500
and went ahead and got a building permit in Springfield. We can go ahead and break ground on the Tyrus Thomas wing!.
I also talked to the Bulls and once the Kirk statue gets situated, Tyrus is next. Haven’t decided on bronze or marble.
I bought NBA 2k10,
now I don’t have to care about the Bulls until I want to! Hooray.
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!

If Vinny stays I suggest we rename the United Center "Nightmare on Madison Street"
but the sign will have to be removed when the Blackhawks are in town.
